For the largest size grids that are most unlikely to have the terrain flat enough: Is there no possibility to define an "oversized" category that the system can attempt to spawn before switching to the equal-probabilty step that it's doing now? On that note, if you can spawn static grids inside of each other, that's how you can get the rails to look good: Spawn in one grid with the girders to represent the rails, and then spawn another grid with concrete-textured armor blocks as the foundation for the rails to stick out of. It very much sounds like you have the ability to get them to spawn with the same orientation and position. Also, before I forget this idea: A mobile mining expedition. It would consist of mining vehicles and maybe some temporary structures. The way the spawns work makes the planet feel very vast and empty. Not really the kind of place that would have a lot of large scale industry in a lot of places.

In general it's not a great idea to spawn things inside each other, but the temptation to make rails this way is real :P They'd still need to be elevated because there is no way to tell MES to find only the most perfect flat areas to use for spawns so any large flat building remains janky at best.

You could put a line of concrete blocks or such under the track. Then it looks supported and makes up for terrain deformaties.

G'day Splitsie and welcome to my post. Today i'm gonna congratulate you with the mod you made, then aftherwards some flaws (i think?) I found out in de 12hours i spend scrapping Pertam. So let's start with the obvious: waaw! This is already an amazing ride so far and only after these 12 hours I finally found a SG H2/O2gen and a H2thruster. Granted: most time I spend on converting 2 flatbeds into a Big-Ass truck with a crane ontop. I wanted to make it all in 1x1 exept for the left-right-main-rotor, only to figure out 1x1 rotors can't lift a LG Battery *Insert grumpy grumbelling*. But; after thinkering and knowing this would be the hardest way, i made a double rotor methingy, with pistons hanging to a point like the suspension cables on towercranes. So was a kudos challenge but conquered it and now the real scrapping can begin. :) The second not so obvious to some: congratulations on lil'Split, i hope he brings you as mush joy as you bring to us! Naaw the flaws discussion part... I know I choose the medium hardwith Pertam, but now I can't imagine scrapping on Europa or Moon start would be fun. So here is the first: Open cockpit, no air, no O2 tank... So imagine how happy i was i scavenged some O2 bottles, to find out there empty and no way to fill them up, in this early stage, empty bottles are waste of precious cargo space so I adbandoned them, which kinda sucked like Tatiana did this last weekend.... Then to my joy i found a small vent in one of those shed's, only to gliffed it trough the voxels, so after some 45 deaths i finally slapped a cockpit with a second vent i found together and now i can recharge in said cockpit (yaay). So after my first start (yeah i f-ed up my kit/your startrover) then, those spwans occur.. fast! I mean i drive to a signal which was 5km away, and on that 5 km i had 3 other signals! Anyway, not trying to miss out and i believe is no cheat, i installed HUD compass, only to realize that that compass point to the direction your driving, not the way the camera is pointing, so now i jump onto my cockpit before i get in, that way i get out ontop wilst the truck is still driving and i'm not making selfinflicting wounds or suicides, quickly look in the direction of the marker and note the direction and the distance, as to the distance of prevous made GPS markers... Then i triangulate them out only to arrive at a baked starter-rover, arrggh! again Tatiana does that over the weekends... This is in no way critism on your work as it is still in progress, so i leave it to your doing, and as a vet with +5K hrs i can co-op that, plus the mini-game of triangulation is fun to some point, but i could be too off-setting for novices. So my improvments? Slap a vent on one of those ports on the connector of the startrover, it funnels trough and ppl can recharge at the kit(except on moon I believe). ANd/or filled bottles loot(if that's possible?), at least something to get those first hours trough. Secondly i would like the signals to be a little longer in hud, and/or less frequent. I don't mind if the find is a "nothing but plate", I mean, it's like going with a medaldetector on a beach, out of the 40 bottlecaps you'll find, i makes that 1 golden dubloon all the better. But if one is more occupied to to calculate possible finds and the time actually finding caps/dubloons, well they wish they also knew Tatiana. God i wish it was already weekend... So that"s all that and plenty more to come, have a great one, byeeee! ;)

The vent situation with the rover is intentional, they can only spawn on oxygen rich planets and if playing on Pertam it limits you to the lowlands with your helmet open (you can breathe with helmet open with lower ambient O2 than you can with helmet closed) until you get a vent attached. The exploded ones should be mostly fixed in the version I just posted as I completely changed the way the sheds work and the hinges are completely gone :) The signals were a compromise to begin with, my preference with them would be to have none at all, unfortunately SE wouldn't handle the grid density required to make that viable so I needed to have something. I may look at doing something more like the SPRT mayday signals in the future but for now I want to focus on adding more grids to give better variety

Not sure if I'm misunderstanding, but I've been playing on Pertam for like...15 hours now and I haven't had any issues with oxygen except during storms...haven't needed a vent OR O2 bottles and the only time I died was because of claang.

If "grind to detach" is a thing, why are we still messing with weld plates, marge blocks, etc, instead of having "weld to attach"?

If you want to do a ground level train, you might be able to cut down the scale of the spawn by having the train stopped at an abandoned signal, without the rest of the trappings of a full station. With regards to the farmstand, you might be able to do a mix and match large/small grid spawn, similar to how you did the large grid sheds with the shelves in them.

yo flips, how you handling the cold weather down there bud. im freezeing my butt off and i live 8 hours north of brissy.... anyway any chance you can get around to making an anvil mod so scrap metal can be hammered into a usable item... for example a blacksmithing mod so using scrap metal and reforged scrap one could make various low tech items... like scafolding or cheap low ql ammo..... Also What about abondoned runway elements.... a partially intact tower a broken plane or 2 a ratty wind sock and rarely a broken plane or space shuttle

I'm torn on the rotors. I love the look of them spinning in the wind, but if we're talking the amount of time it would take for the entire fuselage to turn to iron oxide, do we really think the rotors wouldn't have seized up? I'm no helicopter technician, (I'm a manufacturing technician), but I'm pretty sure they require regular maintenance.

Completely agree, but on the flipside having something moving in SE that isn't directly player controlled is so rare I can't pass it up :)

Yay! Glad to hear the space part is getting worked on soon🤙 Been having A LOT of fun so far. Took me about 2 weeks playing for a few hours a day to get an atmo/space worthy ship together, small grid I've named the Plushie1. Mostly just putzing around on Pertam, expanding the base, gathering more loot and plushies. I have about 50 something in my cockpit🤣😆 big thanks from a plushie addict for adding those plushie sheds

Your comments about modders no longer play the game is exactly why i stopped supporting my mod. I had thousands of people using it, making requests and suggestions. But i found that the modding was becoming my life. I had no time for anything else. Making the 3d models and then getting it working in SE trying to balance it not only with itself but with keen was becoming a full-time job that I wasn't getting paid for. So i passed the mod off and went back to playing the game. But it is sad to see it stagnant and unused now. Sometimes, i get the urge to revive it, but then i remember the time it would take and never do.

Yup, it's a really tough balance. I think it's nice when you're modding to enhance your own experience, but it's rough when you get to the state you got to as that feels like where I got to with EVE online

I know this is a bit late, still catching up. I use my pc to ctrl-a ctrl-c/v copy and paste the text of steam scripts from a local subscribed save, into programmable blocks on my eos server. They run just fine, but have to be re-copied/pasted when they are updated on steam.

not important to this episode /stream vod u will need to look into welders i was just curious on storage for items laying around and remembered when playing with a friend that there was an access panel on one to get resources out of so checked and on large grid they have a 15Kl (as big as a small cargo container with double the grid space needed (welder base and tips)) might want to remove that IDK thought i would just let you know

Train tracks that are exclusively on a platform and then anything that sticks out can slope down and sorta disappear into the ground or the sections that stick out could be blown off laying on the ground toppled over etc could also just make one of them roundabout thingys… train turn table…. Uhhhh its name eludes me.. anyways by itself not intended to be attached and maybe a train can spawn near them on ground or toppled over***** when i say not intended to be attached i mean attached to any sort of functional railway. Like train junkyard and all the old functional rails are burried.

Put a warhead in the 'tank' of the CH-54 Tarhe (Skycrane) and set it off, or detonate a small hydrogen tank, to make it look like an accidental explosion took out the helicopter?

That works in the desert areas, and possibly the snow, but not quite so well in grasslands.

And even 5 blocks in length will rarely have both ends nicely covered, at least one end will be sticking out and looking awkward. I'll do the bridges though as that feels a decent compromise

Can you make the spawn point of structures higher than the bottom? Like a two story building could have the first floor be totally in the ground?

Yep, but since this style of play is about mostly eliminating drills, I wanted things to be fully visible on the surface. Also from past experience drilling out buildings, I didn't find it especially fun gameplay as you regularly blow stuff up as you drill past it :P

when rails are left dilapidated the rails tend to be covered by dirt in areas and dug under... so no that happening in the scrapyard would be believable

also stainless steel and aluminium do not rust... so you wouldnt find those rusted out at the end of the world...

one last thing flipsie ive been playing the scenario and the world feels very empty... because of the RNG of the spawns its some what rough playing the scenario... which hey a challenge is nice but i find myself playing trying to get away with the bare minimum as opposed to building things properly... adding the Aerodynamics mod with plane parts has helped alot in the ability to get off the ground just to scout... ive got 2 playthroughs going right now... in one i have 3 atmo thrusters and 4 small SG hydro thrusters with 2 Large SG hydro thrusters but not near enough metal grids to make it all work... in the other playthrough i have 4 Small SG atmo thrusters and plenty of metal grids but no batteries to power them lol... so its a very hodgepodge world which is fun and proposing a lot of difficult engineering challenges but you just dont find near enough loot...

also you do know that you can collect ICE with your drill... IDK if you meant for this to happening but it is happening as im loving the playstyle i want the mod to be the way you intended last i heard you wanted the drill to basically be useless

In regards to your issue with train stations; A station can be as simple as a single track with a few armor blocks (or even half armor blocks) combined with some plates for a shed. If I had SE I'd make something simple, but I can't. Also, you can work the trains in by putting them on the flatliner by modifying it to have some half blocks which act as 'rails', to simulate a train being moved via truck. Not the most innovative solution, but it'd be cool! ALSO ALSO, how about a rail crossing? Locomotive crashed into a vehicle stuck under a barrier could be cool. (That effect could be achieved by having a barrier start at like... 1 degree or 359 degrees so it tips onto the vehicle, allowing u to spawn basically any vehicle apart from the vanderas with the solar panel because that'd look silly)

Just a detail error I noticed; Chinook has 3 blades per rotor that are interleaved when rotating.

I don't think that's an 'error' so much as a concession to a limitation of the game - making Y shaped rotors rather than + shaped is drastically more cumbersome and rarely looks as good in the end

I was wondering about something when you mentioned not having grids crashing from the sky, could you populate the asteroid feature to have satellite parts crashing down? The asteroid effect may not be an actual grid, but the crater with minerals they leave could spawn a small set of grids. You could even grind down the satellites and add rust and decay to the existing “unknown signal” items? For that matter, can you scrapyard the unknown signals?

The issue is partly the crashing and partly the changes to voxels (if you want to kill your performance, play with meteors while on a planet). I'm already pushing things with the number of free floating grids so I'm always looking to avoid making that worse than it needs to be. My idea for how to have a 'crashed' satellite would be to have one found in a hangar like someone brought it there to scrap it or repair it but never managed to

@@Flipsie no worries, I’ve been watching a couple people playing your mod and I’m going to start a game tonight, it looks like it’s fun without having the AI destroy all your hard work. With all the new mods and Keens updates there isn’t a lot left to modify to change the feel for the game. After Wellington found every unknown object (more than I realized) chasing a falling satellite or space station that doesn’t broadcast would be a fun way to find valuable resources. You have a antique old world feel for your mod that satalites are not period correct for tho. Maybe someone will be inspired to mod it for wasteland survival. I think I’ll try my hand at making a DC3 tonight, maybe a PBY, I love the 1940s era aircraft.

I finally have enough thrusters for space, but I tried adding them to my overweight flyer and couldn't make it more than ~1500m off the ground from Pertram. Guess it's back to basics

I didnt see any boats or ships. They can be listed over on their sides or buried and it would fit the theme

Unfortunately I'm not aware of any mechanism to limit the spawns of ships to low lying areas and I'd really want to avoid having ships in the mountains :/

Dont know if its possible to limit spawns to certain biomes, im giessing not. But if it could be done then you could only allow train station spawns in sand dune biomes, that way anything clipped in the ground makes sense because of the way sand dunes are... just a thought.

Could you do a subway station for the trains? Just a bunker door above grade and the rest spawn below ground? Or a safety bunker below grade just a door almost flush.

You could even have a labyrinth and sometimes there’s good loot. (Rare chance) and sometimes there is none. Kind of like the caves in Icarus. Heck, one version could be a dead end shortly after starting and another could be much longer. So long as you can get the initial mechanic to work.

You can't adjust the terrain in any nice ways for the spawns, the mechanisms we have are adequate for an underground facility but would not work for things on the surface

This is off topic from your video but if anyone would know it'd be you, maybe your community. I'm looking for a way to change the color of the yellow ports and trim to something other than yellow. The one time I saw it done was a while back and I lost the how to for it but it consisted of game file editing, but I know its possible. Any help from someone here would be appreciated. PS been enjoying Scrapyard, Keep up the great work.

@@Flipsie Note: when i found said modification i remember seeing people asking how it was done and the answer was editing some game files. I never did it myself at the time But like i said this was a while back and i cant find that blueprint on the workshop anymore.

Will aerodynamics be added I recently found one of the crashed planes and it doesnt reall make sense why a plane would exist if it physically never worked and never will o.O

The “too big” items would be fine in the desert. The model is just partially buried in sand. The industrial park is great. You can even have them mine minerals if powered. It would take creating a new block, just use the vent block. Instead of the vent creating O2, have it create the mineral of your choice at a low rate. So that the player can’t obtain the block bury it in the ground. Power the structure and you can come back to collect whatever it produced.

Would it be possible to leave a tank for the jet pack as a rare spawn to give you the ability to fly but it's extremely limited.

Why not the DerpRail mod if you're doing elevated rail? The train hangs from the rail and that takes care of (most) physics, you can even do switches using rotors.

Sadly not, much of what I've done doesn't work on console - especially the way I've restricted block placement. Apparently when using controller the block combos allow you to try and place them which then causes the game to crash 😞

I'm sure someone mentioned it, but regarding the industrial buildings being too generous with power cells. Is there any way to restrict their spawn to the player's threat level? Or make them more rare until the user is already big enough to not need power cells that much?

With the way I set up the spawn system there's no simple way to adjust like that. My preference is to make them more in line with the other grids (which is what I did for the update I posted for the mod yesterday) 🙂

Also as the Mod author what is your recommended method for finding spawned in items. Ive been using the radar mod as the HUD pop up is so short.

I use hud compass, 4 distant gpsmarkers, pen & paper, traingulate things out.. kinda fun as a mini game :)

i believe there is a mod that actually allows the rusting and degradation of materials over time, maybe you should try that for your game mode too.

In a playstyle like this where you can't refine stuff or get stuff other than what you find in the wild I think it would probably be a bit too much to have stuff constantly being destroyed by rust and needing repair on top of worrying about things that have spawned in to get resources from degrading before you get a chance to look them for materials that you would then just have to use to undo rust damage on the stuff you already salvaged. I think it is a great idea on paper but I don't think it would work for the salvage playstyle because of the extra work in maintaining things and rushing to try to collect stuff to repair with. I also think I remember splitsie mentioning that mod in a nother video of his and saying he didn't like how fast things rusted in it and thought it would be cool if it was slow so a grid you had forever started to rust to show it's age.

@@Zenshu1, slow the rate, and limit it to unpowered, non-player-owned grids, and it might work ok, but it would be a balancing act to get the timing right so that you can actually find things before they disappear, but there’s still some automatic grid cleanup happening.

Maybe you can get the mod author to add to the spawn code "set off an explosion on this block" like he has for "delete these blocks". Can't name individual armor blocks, but perhaps putting in a nameable block (or custom data capable) and making that ground zero for one or more explosions of a specific power. Less than a rocket, more than rifle bullets, with perhaps a random range +- x damage for good measure... If you want more variation and less work breaking them into bits, make it some sort of "pick x-y random armor blocks, to receive from n-m% damage at spawn". If you get something like this capability, then you might be able to configure so that all "atmo thrusters" receive at least 30% damage, up to 100% at spawn... Batteries take damage sufficient to break at least one of the power cell parts, or beyond. For the choppers with the tail boom of the I-beams, set a max of one of them to be damaged 100%, then each spawn gets a random tail "length" on the ground. The angled flat armor holding on the landing skids, name them as targets for 100% damage, but say 25% of them, and it's off to the races for broken skids. And for the love of Clang, please increase the number of computers... I'm flailing around unable to build much in the way of storage or a crane on my rover for lack of computers. (And the storage is all connectors front to back down the length of the vehicle so far.) I've found one small grid medium cargo so far, but can't lift it onto my vehicle... Salvaging the computers from doors and the few ruined offices having intact lockers has been my primary source for them.

Not long after I posted that, you were changing the paint on some blocks before scrubbing them down to a build state. Damage to specific color/texture might be an easier selection criteria for generic armor blocks.
