Most sitcoms probably wouldn't be as funny as we think if they removed the laugh track. Take Big Bang Theory for instance, I found it icky enough to begin with, but without the laugh track, its humour is just plain creepy and I wouldn't in any way want to be associated with those assholes who call themselves geeks.

There's actually a good explanation for some of them. Monica was subletting from her Grandmother who had been there for years before she moved in (and I think it was rent controlled on top of that), and Rachel was just staying with her. Chandler had a tedious office job with a ludicrously complicated sounding name, but he had his own office, so it was probably pretty high paying, and Joey was his room mate so he just played a lower part of the rent than Chandler I think. Ross was a paleontologist, but I have no idea how much they make, so it could go either way on that one. Phoebe is the one that doesn't make sense, because she worked as a masseuse and played guitar at Central Perk as a hobby, so I seriously doubt she was making enough money to afford an apartment in Manhattan on her own.

@@benparsons4979 I believe there was an episode where Ross's son was playing with dolls or something, and he was bothered by it. Not a big deal to me, every single sitcom had this same plotline. I remember the Roseanne one where Dan didn't want his son to be a witch on Halloween. Though I wouldn't call either one homophobic. Since playing with dolls doesn't make you gay, both episodes were more about traditional masculinity.
