well.. not exactly.. shanties were work songs used to coordinate the crew on the same rhythm to make the ship more efficient. the content didn’t matter much, but the call and response did, a lot like calling cadence in the military today. this also means wellerman isn’t a traditional sea-shanty in that it wouldn’t have been sung during the actual act of sailing. if you wanna hear one of those, listen to randy dandy-oh.

Stevedores would be the obvious candidate, but a few years ago, I used to work at an airport doing "ramp" work, and a lot of that job, especially loading and unloading baggage and cargo from planes, could have used sea shanties for coordination. I tried to make that happen, but my coworkers were very much not into the idea.
