Am I the only one who thinks And Justice For All is the best one? I mean, I love how heavy and kinda progressive it is, despite the no bass thing

I think Metallica is one of those great bands where there are a lot of variations in opinion on what is their greatest work. Most would say MoP or RtL but there are plenty of fans who say AJFA is the greatest and they’d gladly die on that hill. As a huge Cliff Burton fan I can’t say I agree as to me his presence is sorely missed on that record but I understand those who love And Justice the most.

I actually really dug Load when it came out and when I hear those tracks today I'm reminded that they were indeed pretty good songs just different from what fans were used to hearing from them. I feel like ReLoad had a lot of what was leftover from the Load sessions so it wasn't quite as good. Most interestingly is that a lot of the material reminded me of some of the more rock n roll NWOBHM bands like Trespass, Witchfynde, Praying Mantis, Diamondhead etc. which I had just gotten into at the time since I had picked up the NWOBHM revisited double disc collection that Lars produced.

The first 4 albums from the 80’s are amazing albums! The Black album is different but still amazing. The Load and Reload albums are great underrated albums and people only hate them because they are not thrash albums. St Anger isn’t very good but it has some good songs that are unfortunately ruined by terrible production. Yeah it had good songs. I guess a lot of the criticsm/hate it received was due to: cutting their hair short and putting on posh clothes, Lars saying how he prefers Oasis over Venom and how he doesn't see Metallica as a Metal band, songs like Hero of the Day etc. It seemed like they were jumping on the alternative bandwagon.

I can totally understand people being more attached to 80s Metallica,especially if they grey up with the band at that time. No matter what Metallica do, - those 4 albums will resonate above everything to them. I get it. But I will never feel the same way. I got into them like most my age (40), in the early 90s during the Black album. It was right in the midst of my grunge obsession. I still love grunge, and I have loved for the most part all of what Metallica have done since Black album aswell. There is some exceptional music from the Load timeline that was criminally overlooked because the bands image overhaul caught the headlines instead. Outlaw Torn and Bleeding Me are titanic songs that hark to Sabbath and Zeppelin's heavy influences. Hetfield was a hard rocker before Lars introduced the NWOBHM to him, so it was inevitable that the heavy 70s influence would shine through as he was gettin older, more introspective after thrashin thru the 80s. Death Magnetic absolutely has sound issues, but the songs are great- My Apocalypse and All nightmare Long are wonderful examples of fast trashy modern Metallica. And Hardwired.. had brilliant songs- Atlas Rise, Moth into Flame, the awesome Dream no More,and Spit out the Bone. Furious fun!! I dont rate or like Lulu either, but I dont even class it as an actual "Metallica" album anyway. St Anger- well, to me I hear potential that sounds unfinished. Its abrasive, meandering songs give it the feel of a demo thats yet to be finalised. But- when played live, Frantic is a beast of a song! Again, I understand the first 4 albums' importance to most people, but I also think anybody that shuts the band off after ...Justice, or Black is seriously missing out on some great songs.

If it is ok, let me share a story. Thank you. When I was younger, I just went a different route musically, more rock, prog rock, folk rock, and psychedelic/underground rock than heavy metal, I have since come around to heavy metal. I was not a Metallica fan as a young man. Eight years ago, I was very involved in my father's leukemia battle, daily medical appointments, nightly hospital trips to stay with my father as he was in the hospital. I had the black album, as many fairweather fans had. But two months before my dad lost his battle with that dreadful disease, I found myself buying all the cliff burton Metallica albums plus Justice and Garage Days, and for those two or three months listened to nothing but Metallica and only Metallica. And oddly enough it gave me such solace and strength and pissed offness to survive that awful time in my life. Cliff Burton was my screen saver at work. So I am forever grateful to those early Metallica albums and how they helped me through that time. So I will rate what I have. 7. METALLICA 6 HARDWIRED ...TO SELF-DESTRUCT 5 MASTER OF PUPPETS 4 GARAGE INC 3 KILL 'EM ALL 2 ...AND JUSTICE FOR ALL 1 RIDE THE LIGHTNING A side note, a great movie with that era of Metallica as the soundtrack is HESHER. I remember the day St-Anger was released... there was a record store near the office me and some music-loving colleagues would go to every Tuesday, the day new albums were released back then. That day I went there with a colleague who had gotten into Metallica through the Black Album, Load and Re-Load. For my part, I had gotten into them with Ride The Lightning, Master of Puppets and Kill Em All. Anyway, he bought St-Anger, and once we got back to work, he locked himself up in his office to listen to his new acquisition. An hour or so later, he came out and left the CD on the corner of my desk and told me to have a listen to it that night and that if I liked it and wanted it, it was for sale for me to buy it if I wanted it. So I took it home later and listened to it. I honestly never laughed so much listening to anything up to that point. I was in stitches and told my colleague thanks but no thanks on his offer. The next time I laughed so much listening to anything was some years later when they free-streamed Lulu online before the actual release date. These 2 albums were literally like when people say "this artist could fart on record and people would still buy it". To this day, I don't personally know anybody who bought Lulu.

Ride the Lightening 4. Kill em All
@gabriellarrubia10064 жыл бұрын
Metallica is relatively easy for me to rank, my list: 10. St. Anger (A real messy album, that to me almost sounds like an unfinished album or a demo. Songs are very long and in a very unnecessary way because there's so much verse repetition... Lack of solos nullify Metallica's classic pacing and built-up climaxes... Every now and then you'll hear clunky or scratchy bass and guitar parts... I guess Frantic is almost unanimously considered ok because it sounds more refined, like an actually finished song... Most of the album is unexcusable, though.) 9. Re-Load (I don't despise the Load era, but even in comparison to Load itself there is less finesse and lots of filler here... Some songs like Carpe Diem and The Memory Remains even annoy me a bit... There are still good chunks of it, like Fuel, Devil's Dance, Prince Charming, Bad Seed and Where the Wild Things Are... Other songs like Better Than You and Slither are enjoyable at first but kind of overstay their welcome... Again, unnecessary repetition plays a large role in the albums I dislike.) 8. Death Magnetic (Some people consider this a return to form, but I don't think it's quite there... Some songs like Cyanide, That Was Just Your Life and Judas Kiss are quite spectacular... Instrumentally this album has stellar moments, but overly procrastinated intros and overtretched interludes combined with songwriting that was still down a notch make it tiresome and uncomparable to 80s material). 7. Kill 'em All (Seems like a low ranking for a classic debut, but from here onwards I really enjoy every Metallica album. Truth is, as much as this album has great historical importance, I find myself reaching for a few songs in particular like Jump in the Fire, Metal Militia and No Remorse a lot more than the rest... Kirk shreds on this album, but to me it almost seems like the solos are a bit generic and interchangeable... This album also has a kind of rawness to it, but I personally prefer the Metallica albums that sound a bit classy, almost regal in nature.) 6. Hardwired (This album got me. I wasn't this excited by a "comeback" album of sorts in a long time. A little excessive? Maybe, but I think disc one is damn near perfect, disc two starts off a bit stiff but then quickly regains momentum. So essentially there's a lot of musical content and I don't feel the need to skip much and you get a great listen throughout. Some songs went as far as to give me goosebumps. I also like that this album isn't trying to rip off justice and master, there's a bit of groove and seems like a little bit of everything.) 5. Load (Surprise! I have no animosity towards this album. Certainly not comparable to the thrash powerhouses, but I played this album to death when I was a kid. Compare this to 90s and early 2000s alternative rock and it's still classier and more technical. Compare it to so-called "sell-out" albums by other metal bands and it seems so much more natural, like the band is actually enjoying what they play, and therefore an honest album. Until it Sleeps and Bleeding Me are personal favorites, but I pretty much enjoy it from start to finish. Call me crazy, but I hear a great deal of Metallica's influences like UFO and Thin Lizzy on this album, which reiterates what I mean about it being honest and the band enjoying themselves. A bit of Alice and Chains here and there, which is also no big deal because AiC is another childhood favorite. Overrall, a great album from the 90s.) 4. Metallica 1991 (Four words best describe this album: Overplayed for a reason. It's great from top to bottom, still heavy and with bits of thrash here and there. There's stellar songwriting on multiple tracks- particularly The Unforgiven and Wherever I May Roam.The radio staples are quite good and as far as "gateway" albums go, this is THE gateway album. B-sides are exciting. People get pissed off at it being overrated, but I see no problem in there being an album that appeals to general masses, if it really is still good.) 3. ... And Justice for All (This could easily be my favorite if it weren't for a few nitpicks, which surprisingly isn't the bass, but specific parts of some songs that make it loopy and excessive, like in Eye of the Beholder and Frayed Ends of Sanity. I love the rest, though. Both guitarists' best guitar work is arguably on this album, Lars is impressionable and there really is a sort of progressive edge to it.) 2. Master of Puppets (I don't think this is the best album of all time like many people preach, but being perfectly honest, it's a powerhouse. Sound engineering on this album is legendary. I hear The Thing that Should Not Be and to this very day, even for modern standards it is HEAVY. There are beautiful musical moments that just scream artistry... I also mentioned before about Metallica's pacing, built-up climaxes and regal nature. This album might be the epitome of all of that.) 1. Ride the Lightning (Simply put, one of my all-time favorite albums, and in my opinion the first actual thrash masterpiece. Kill 'em All had the technical prowess, but as I said before, there's a rawness to it. Ride has class, a certain finesse to it. Songwriting is nothing less than dark poetry on top of classical inspired compositions with the solid foundations of fast paced metal... Kill 'em All couldn't necessarily hold its own against Judas Priest or Iron Maiden in the songwriting department, but Ride the Lightning screams evolution... It has a bit of that pacing and regal nature of Master, but I also like that it sounds less ambitious at times and just reverts to pure excitement. Nothing here ever overstays its welcome, and with most classic Metallica albums you have a great experience but feel completely drained. This album makes you want to hear it twice! The title track is my personal favorite Metallica song, Fade to Black is one of the most beloved semi-ballad metal songs and Fight Fire with Fire is arguably one of the best album openers. I could talk about this album for days!)
@treffbennett65344 жыл бұрын
nicely said, regarding Metallica's catalog and why you liked some more than others, you have great ability to break down music and I really loved reading your comments on each album! And yes, finally someone who thinks Hardwired' was a return to form. I really like it-chalk full of great riffs, extremely energetic and filled with confident songwriting, and the production is STRONG! I feel that many people who have dismissed it on this page, just haven't given it a fair listen, as it features many of Metallica's strong suits. I play the hell out of it and feel that the song quality blows away the material on Death Magnetic, which sounds like a band trying to recapture what made them great.....but missing the mark! Great stuff, Gabriel! take care.

I’m gonna go on a bit of a rant here- I think a lot of the dislike for the Load albums is still the fact that they cut their hair and changed their image even more than the music itself. Do you really think Metallica would have still been making the same type of albums they made in the 80’s into the 90’s had Cliff had lived? I still think they would have changed. Remember Cliff was into a lot of southern rock, classical, he had even said he liked early REM in interviews. Load has a definite southern rock vibe to it. One thing Cliff wouldn’t had tolerated though was them getting haircuts and wearing suits on the back cover. Cliff had that I don’t give a fuck attitude, this is who we are whether you like it or not. Now that being said, nothing will ever beat their 80’s output, but I do enjoy some of the Load stuff. St Anger is a piece of shit though. Demos sound better than that album. IMO, that was the real sellout point in their career when they were chasing the Nu Metal trend.
@johnkatsoudas47674 жыл бұрын
I actually like the majority of the Load album, but in my opinion the reason there are so many fans that crap on it big time is that Metallica strayed away even more than they did with The Black Album and to many it did not feel sincere. It felt like with their lighter sound, haircuts, and clothing style that they were trying too hard to get away from being called a Heavy Metal band because at that time it was considered very uncool to be a Heavy Metal band. MTV even cancelled their Heavy Metal show Headbanger's Ball at the end of 1994. The only band in my opinion that was keeping Heavy Metal alive in the 1990's was Pantera. They kept getting heavier with every album they put out. Pantera's The Great Southern Trendkill came out close to the same time that Load came out and it was insanely heavy. I actually like almost every song on the Load album , accept for Mamma Said, Ronnie, and Hero Of The Day. Now Reload I actually hated the majority of that album , accept for Devil Dance. Reload is definitely leftover songs from the Load sessions because in my opinion the songs were not even close to the quality that the songs that ended up on the Load album. I agree with you big time that Saint Anger was crap all the way through.

Wow Opeth and Metallica are my two favorite bands and you covered em both today! As far as Metallica’s discography goes (main studio albums), I’d say: 1. Master of Puppets 2. And Justice For All 3. Ride the Lightning 4. Kill Em All 5. Self-titled 6. Hardwired 7. Death Magnetic 8. Load 9. Reload 10. St. Anger

Kill Me All is now my favorite. Yes its more adolescent-y of the Cliff albums but the riffs and crunchiness of them is awesome.

Thanks Pete, always think it would be great to do a channel like this, but having to listen to Lulu again almost makes me reconsider!

There are two on my list: "Master of Puppets" and "Black". Aside from that I can't take Metallica. I had the unfortunate experience of seeing Metallica in 2004. This was one of their in the round shows; it absolutely sucked, aside from Heart in 1978, probably the worst show I have ever seen. I was done after that show.

I'm a huge fan of Lulu, but I think of it as a Lou Reed record. One of my absolutely favorite artists. And I know it's a tough sell for both fan bases. But I'm weird one, and I love it. But I don't blame anyone for not liking it.

13. Reload - even Fuel I don`t like too much, The End of the Line from Death Magnetic has a similar Riff at Two Minutes and Seventeen Seconds, and It`s far better song for me. 12. Lulu - I dig a lot Junior Dad. It`s a clever experimental, alternative, reminds me The Cure. I prefer this kind of song than the Hard-Rock-Country-Blues-Pseudo Grunge of the Loads records. The rest is over-repetition, over-experimentation. I think they shoud spend more time on this project. Very rushed. 11. Load - I really love Untill It Sleeps, and when I heard it for the first time, I thought it was a smart move. I knew they were getting softer and relaxed, into mid-tempo songs, but I also thought they would bring something "intelligent", thoughtfull. But when I heard Mama Said, Hero of the Day, Cure, Ain`t My Bitch (seems a Guns`n`"fuckin"`Roses song title), the endless Thorn Within, I was appaled because I would not think for a second I could be bored by a Metallica main riff. The other great song is Bleeding Me 10. St. Anger - Bad production, confused songwritting, but I love Frantic, St. Anger, and the last one, All Within My Hands 9. Hardwired to Overextention - I love Moth Into Flame. Most of them are average to good/great songs. Is it me or the Title Song Riff is Over-over-over used? 8. S&M - Some versions are great, starting with Ecstasy of Gold and Kall of Ktulu. I like a lot No leaf Clover. This version of One is also great, and the Load/Reload songs are better here, the orchestra fill some spaces. 7.Garage Inc. - The old Garage Re-revisited is great, but this compilation includes also other B-Side covers, Like Am I Evil, Stone Cold Crazy, Breadfan, So What, and the new recordings have Mercyful Fate 6. Death Magnetic - I love the record. The only flaw is they tried a little too much to emulate the past. The Day That Never Comes, remind me a lot One and Am I Evil on the fast part. 5. Metallica - A lot of great songs, but it was overplayed to death. I think they got fed up with their prog side, and wanted a more mid-tempo "For Whom The Bell Tolls" oriented songwriting. 4. Kill `Em All - Great songs, exciting, but they would become even better composers and performers. 3. And Justice For All - Great, great album, Shortest Straw and Eye of Beholder very good, but not quite so great as the other songs. 2. Ride The Lightning - Apart from Escape and Trapped Under Ice, this is a stellar record. 1. Master of Puppets - Maybe the BEST METAL ALBUM EVER RECORDED.

Metallica is the one band in rock history and metal history that gets critiqued or maligned for everything they do. Lets not forget that they were also accused of selling out back in the early days and during the "golden thrash metal" era when they put beautiful acoustic guitars on "Fade to Black" and "The Call of Ktulu" on the "Ride the Lightning" album. That was considered blasphemy for a thrash/speed metal band to do back in those early days. Then they got called sell outs for signing with a major record label when they landed their recording contract with Elektra Records in 84.' Then they got called sell outs when they made their first music video for MTV for the tune "One." And etc., etc. etc. No matter what this band does they get critiqued but.....despite all that they still remain the biggest metal band on the planet.

Metallica is my favorite band since 89 when I got into them at 12 years old but Im not a big fan of Reload and ST Anger Sound is Horrible and the songs are not that good and don't feel Complete.I think Lulu is horrible.I never listened to it all the way through.I have seen them every tour though since I saw them in 1992 with GNR. 1.Ride the Lightning 2.)Master of Puppets 3.)Kill em' All 4.)...And Justice For All 5.)The Black Album 6.)Garage INC 7.)Death Magnetic 8)Hardwired 9.)Load 10.)Re Load

I actually got into Metallica with songs like I Disappear and Fuel then my friend got me to listen to Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning and that blew me away, such raw energy! Now I pretty much only listen to the first four albums with the first being my favourite

Master Of Puppets is the album that made me fall in love with music. I will always have Metallica to thank for that but Man, if any band ever had ups ans downs... 1) Master Of Puppets 2) Kill Em All 5.98 Ep 3) ...And Justice For All 4) Ride The Lightning 5) "the Black Album" 6) Hardwired... To Self-Destruct 7) Vagina Coffin 8) Lulu 9) Load 10) Reload 11) Garage Inc (the first disc of newly recorded songs) 12) St Anger If live albums were included I would put S&M dead last.

The guest ranks Load down at the bottom and admits he's not really listened to it. In the words of Pete on the Alice in Chains rant 'Well then you don't really know what you're talking about'.

See Alice in Chains Unplugged on MTV, Hetfield was in the audience, you can tell the performance moved him and I think he wanted to capture that spirit for himself.

I am impressed that Pete likes Ride the Lightning as his number 1. Ride the Lightning is my all time favorite album of any genre of music. If I ranked my top 5 it would be Ride the Lightning 1, ....And Justice for All 2, Master of Puppets 3, Kill em All 4, and Death Magnetic 5.
