Secret to lighting pilot light on GAS fireplace after long time

I watched every damn video on KZbin related to gas fireplaces and pilots….and not a single one of them gave me this hint lol! I was trying to light two gas fireplaces that had been off for over 12 years! Had no idea it took so long for the gas to travel from the shut off to the pilot. This video solved the problem by making me wait 10-15 mins between opening up the gas valve and actually trying to light the pilot

The thermopile also takes an amount of time (~10 seconds) to heat up to send the signal to the valve as well. So your pilot could go out when you release the pilot plunge (3:53). So just keep holding it so it flips the main valve for operation.

Thanks this was very helpful, after more than 3 years. The secret is to turn the gas on and I have a wall chute that needs to be opened, as well with a key. Once I waited, allowing time 15-30 min for gas to flow through the line, then it fired up--everything worked like brand new. Thank ya, thank ya, thank ya!

If my shutoff valve is next to the "logs" do I have to wait as long? There's no other shutoff near the tank outside (or at least I didn't shut anything off outside for the summer). I just don't want gas flowing into my fireplace and house for 20 minutes before lighting. Any advice is appreciated.

Does that go for a fireplace that has the wall key also? To leave it on for 30 minutes?

Yes. Wall key, wall switch, or direct button. If the unit has not been used all season, turn the gas valve to open and give it time to make its way. The longer the line, the longer the wait. Then try turning it on.
