I love the idea of Ghost sneaking around the Nightfort. Especially because it’s been talked about as haunted constantly, and all a haunting is is the presence of a ghost creeping around.

Re. the Black Gate: no guarantee Yarwick or Marsh know how to operate it (the Gate itself just says "who are you?" so if they don't know the correct answer, there could be problems. Sam knew how to use the Gate because Coldhands taught him); also, even if they do know that you need to say the first half of the Vow, does the Gate see a difference between those who said their vow in front of a Weirwood vs in the Sept? Does it only recognise Weirwood vows? Will it eat people who fail the test?

This was a great conversation! Interesting theory about Jon being the Ghost of the Night Fort, right after he will most likely inhabit Ghost, and then be reborn amidst salt, and probably a little smoke, It reminds me of that time when the Starks were kids and Jon was covered in flour, scaring them in the crypts... And, Beric... reminds me of Tantalus in the afterlife... always reaching for that fruit, or bending down to get a drink, only to be denied the pleasure... the Gods seem to really dislike it when one cheats death. Stannis and co. at the night fort... Stannis has strong Hades parallels. His attitude, kind of blunt, his sense of pragmatic displeasure with hus domain, his sense of duty, Hades accepted his lot as soon as he drew the shortest straw. Shireen has major Hel parallels. The queen of Hell, one side of her black and rotting, the other side beautiful and pure, she cuts quite a night queen/corpse queen figure, doesn't she? And there's the child sacrifice allusions, as well.

This was fantastic , I am always down for a Nightfort discussion. Certainly an iconic dark influential element in the narrative on many levels , especially in terms of the universe's ancient past. Of course referring to the books' Night's King , the Rat cook, 79 sentinels , "thing that came in the night" , Danny Flint , Mad Axe , Symeon Star Eyes (although the tale with Symeon seems mostly connected with the books' NK in that he was likely witnessing the conflict between Brandon the Breaker and the Night's King) to name a few. Certainly a dark mysterious element of the narrative that seems to lay out ideas , principles , examples ,stories and legends where echoes from the Nf will likely be seen in the current narrative all over Westeros and that there are dark magical mysteries at work in GRRM's ASoIaF universe. I hold out hope that possibly there may be a few influential events in the current narrative that are directly connected to the Nf or at least associated with it. This discussion really unearthed some great gems in and around the Nightfort. I absolutely love the idea that resurrected Jon with Ghost or just Ghost with Jon's spirit / soul in the direwolf (in the interim before JS' resurrection) taking out some retribution at the Nightfort against those who conspired and acted against Jon via stalking and haunting those responsible. Love that imagery of that idea if that occurred at the Nf. Also really liked the idea if there is a metaphysical conflict between Bran and the Others / heart of winter that it could be at the Nightfort on a magical plane ; that would make a lot of sense and be a parallel of a Stark battling the Others similar to the whole book's NK conflict. The Harrenhal comparison work on many levels , huge grand structures who both to an extent can be viewed as perversions of nature and the Weirwoods that fell from prominence and somewhat ruined / destroyed and both show despite their size and scale in such close proximity to huge magically important sites (the Wall for the Nf and the IoF / Gods Eye for Harrenhal) just how insignificant those structures are compared to the arcana and higher magic / mysteries in this universe. And the Black Gate is one of the most intriguing mysteries seemingly high magic / fantasy in the narrative. Definitely a lot going on there and I have been a long believer in the concept brought up by Bookshelfstud I believe that the BG is possibly the door that Hodor will sacrifice himself (willing or unwillingly) to open / hold open. It makes a lot of sense , likely helping Bran escape back south of the Wall ; ntm Hodor's real name in the books Walder , so Walder / "Wall Door" this makes a lot of sense to me and the BG would be the most likely door in the Wall where the Hodor sacrifice occurs. Great discussion , the Nightfort certainly a dark somewhat mysterious & magical element in the narrative that i thoroughly enjoying discussing or hearing great discussions and debate from others regarding it like this one. Loving this series Robert , hope to see many more installments , keep up the great work.

To paraphrase Tyrion's advice to Jon "One would rather deny a hard truth than face it" and perhaps all the horror tales associated with the Nightfort represent in some form the Night's Watch's or even the North's ugly history with the Others in terms of sacrifice, how the Stark's are tied to the wall (not just through Brandon the Builder) and perhaps even descent from the Other's (assuming the Night's King's "Corpse Queen" was an Other) in order to prevent another Long Night or Other invasion.

Great show fellas. Do you think it was critical that Jon & Sam took their Knights Watch vows at the heart tree? Does that allow Sam entrance to the Weir Gate? I too have had a theory that Jon-Ghost chases the murder club watchmen to the Night Fort. He then takes them out one by one as a sacrifice to the Weirwood growing in the center of the kitchen. Only death can pay for life, this will enable Jon’s resurrection.
@williamwhitfield62253 жыл бұрын
It’s very possible, especially when you consider Bloodraven likely has a connection to ghost already. He may lead and influence Jon while he’s in ghost to find his way back into his body somehow. And Melisandre may have a role in resurrecting his body, warming it after it’s been preserved in the ice cells. Fits the Ice and Fire theme of Jon as well.

I think i agree more with the idea that Preston Jacobs mentioned in one of his video series (not sure if he's the one who came up with it originally), it's that the Night King's mate was not an Other, but rather a Wight. She is even called "his corpse queen" in the tale and George has written about the concept of someone controlling the corpse and using it for sex in at least one of his Sci Fi books, as far as my knowledge goes.

Robert, thanks for the video and for adding Mr. Manwoody to the rotation, I've enjoyed his guest appearances on Joe Magician's channel and enjoy his takes. That being said I gotta say this is the only video of yours I've ever watched where I felt the most crucial aspects of the topic were missed entirely. The story of Dany Flint's gotta have some import to the story's future, it's name dropped multiple times throughout the texts and I was eager to hear both of your takes on it but ya'll glossed over it completely. More importantly though: The Black Gate just SCREAMS sacrifice. The Nightfort was the seat of the Night King & his 'corpse bride' and they're mentioned to have made human sacrifices there. At the oldest part of the oldest fort there's a Weirwood faced door that Bran thinks looks to be swallowing you as you pass through. We have the Others and one of the only things we've been shown clearly in the story about them is that they take/accept Crasters offering of children. In Fire & Blood we get more information about Queen Allysane's visit to the Wall and how she felt there was ' a darkness there, a taste in the air...I was so glad to leave that place' and that she asks that the Nights Watch abandon it and offers to pay for their new fortress with her own jewels. I know I'm not the only person who thinks there is strong implication that the Nights King gave children (quite possibly his own) to the Others through the Black Gate. Even if neither you or Michael buy that theory it deserved to be brought up and discussed. That being said you've got an amazing track record and I'll just have to live with this one disappointment =)
@kragary4 жыл бұрын
It's never been confirmed in the books that the Others take Craster's sons. Our only source for that info are Craster's wives and I think we should be more sceptical of them than a lot of the fandom is. They've been forced to abandon their newborn sons to die of exposure for decades, of course they'd rather believe that the babies don't die but are instead adopted by magical forest elves who raise them up as their own. But there's no evidence for it whatsoever.

Seems the most popular thought about Winterfell's name is that it's foreshadowing that it's where the Others are likely to be defeated, but I think 'fell' could just as easily mean the beginning, possibly foreshadowing that a stark is involved with the Others, possibly a Brandon.

Definitely. Fell refers to the past. It had already fallen. I think both options are plausible - but winter beginning rather than ending at Winterfell seems more fitting from a literary perspective.

I think in the context of Martin's novels, the Freys as a family will replicate the Rat King's fate. There is a lot of evidence that something is imminent akin to what Preston Jacobs calls the Frey Civil War. It will break out when Walder dies at the latest, but probably even earlier. Instead of being able to fortify their position, the Freys will be driven to fighting among each other, or to "eating they own young" as it were.

What I am more interested in, can Mance Raider still use the Black Gate? I suspect knowledge of the Black Gate has been a close guarded secret with senior rangers for centuries, it's too useful to be forgotten. If so, Mance may have learned that secret. If Mance knows about the Black Gate and how to use it, does the Black Gate understand Mance is no longer part of the Watch, or can Mance use the Black Gate to cross the wall.

That would be a fabulous read of Jon in Ghost POV chapter reeking vengeance on those who murdered Jon. What also would be cool, would be the last scene of A Dream of Spring is Jon’s POV chapter where Jon goes out ranging; hears the howling of the Direwolves in the distance and Ghost, who normally had been silent up to this point, starts howling back. This chapter as well as Bran’s first chapter would be great book ends to the whole series.

Something else to consider about the black gate (and it may have already been mentioned)… perhaps it only operates for those Black Brothers who’ve said their vows to the old Gods as Sam did and likely most everyone did back when the wall was constructed. If a weirwood is living memory, in theory, the door being of weirwood can vouch for any brother who has said their oath beneath one.

Interesting about the Rat Cook story, with that Weirwood door leading to the well, and the Weirwood tree bursting through the floor of the kitchen: it seems those Weirwoods are frequently linked to references to cannibalism and blood sacrifice, and wherever Bran goes, taking him step by step closer to the Weirwood Throne, stories of cannibalism, blood sacrifice, and horror seem to follow - if I remember correctly, one of the earliest scenes we have with Bran might have been Old Nan telling him stories of the Long Winter and people eating each other in the cold night. There's a reason that the "Jojen Paste" theory seems to have so much momentum behind it with fans! Really, pretty much all of the Stark children and Catlyn could arguably be said to have taken some very dark paths in these novels - it's hard to say just how much of this comes from GRR Martin's ambiguous, dark, and creepy take on fantasy, but in almost any other story, the Starks' character developments would almost look like the backstories of villains!

Only instead of being killed by his brother, Stannis killed his own brother using a creepy demon baby born of a magic woman.

There's something that confuses me about the black gate and the weirwood tree in the kitchen Due to the locations, with the wierwood and the black gate both being close to the well, it seems to imply that it's the same tree. But the thing is that the black gate is thousands of years old and existed while the castle was in use. The castle only stopped being used much more recently and it's only after that that the wierwood could grow through the kitchen. It seems strange that the two bits would be the same tree when there's such a time gap. Am I just misreading the distances?
@kragary4 жыл бұрын
I think the idea is that the young weirwood has sprouted from the old root system that still exists underneath the castle. There are clues in the story that weirwoods might behave more like a fungus than a tree. Their underground bits seem to be able to survive long after the bits above ground are gone. The root system may be the real organism, the trees pop up when convenient but aren't necessary.
@swayback737510 ай бұрын
The entire nightfort is built around, and consists of that tree, it may be built within that tree as well. it’s the original tree, it’s the only one that moves or talks, it’s very special. It’s likely to made of another creature with its soul trapped in the tree. This Theme is repeated over and over, winterfell is much the same, built in tge shape of a weir wood, and built around the tree at the gods wood, which is likely the case for all the castles with weir woods at their center. Layers, many many layers that I can’t describe very well.
@Valkanna.Nublet10 ай бұрын
@@swayback7375 But there's a small difference with the fort and places like Winterfell. In other places they build other buildings near their wierwood tree and then put a wall around everything. They have their tree in its own little area, like the Winterfell godswood. But the tree in the fort is literally inside the kitchen. I can't imagine that anyone would build a room/building around an existing tree, especially not in the North, due to needing a hole in the roof for the tree to stick out. So it's not logical for the tree to already be there when the fort was built. But the problem with that is that the underground part was there while the fort was in use. Even if we take the idea of the wierwood net, part of which is the idea that all the trees are linked through a system of roots, it still doesn't make sense. That hypothesis could mean that the bottom (ie underground) part of a tree grows first before growing above ground. However, if the Watch knew the tree was there then they would not build above it. So it seems to me that the only option is that the fort was built first, then the tree grew, then they had to move the kitchen to another building, and finally later the fort was abandoned. But that would mean that the fort wasn't built there because of the tree. But that's ok because we don't hear of any other fort having a wierwood inside its walls.

love the idea of Ghost hunting those who killed Jon. My feeling on the night fort is that once everything is settled it will be the new seat of the night's watch and the castle for Jon to rule from like his father and brother Benjen had planned for Jon. It is mentioned that they were going to work together with the nights watch since it was short handed and place people in some of the abandoned keeps and holds to help hold the wall, using one for Jon. And if the night's king was a stark how fitting would it be for a stark to replace him through his mother Lyanna?

Wouldn't Harrenhall be the best place to fight the others? Since it is supposed to be invincible to a land attack?

The Night's Queen seems to be the only Other and woman that interacts with humans. Wonder how that worked 🤔

Think she is not an other, but like Mel, but a pristress of ice instead. The nightfort has heavy child sacrefice symbolism. An other would simply freez you while getting close, so she needed to be something else. A wightmas dead would not be able to bear children to sacrefice but Mel had magic shadow Babys, so an inverted Version of her might be the mother,of the others

I like the ideas but I'm not sure GRRM is going to drop hints in all the stories old Nan tells Bran. It would make sense to give little nuggets and a lot of misinformation to keep the readers guessing. But that's just my thoughts

I think Jon abandoning the Nights Watch was already forshadowed earlier in the story. When he tried to run his friends brought him back. If they killed every man that ran to molestown etc it would be different if he actually left but he technically didn’t even leave yet and abandon his watch yet so by rights it unjustified execution of the Lord Commander. That’s the irony of “for the watch”, it wasn’t. Perhaps that’s why the god(s) allow him to be resurrected along with help of him being a skinchanger

The sad thing is you will never find out. It's clear George has no plans to ever finish this series.

Is Stannis's daughter still alive in the books? That would be another parallel, with him and Melisandre... child sacrifice if the show pulled from anything there.
