My favorite moment of the movie was when they cleaned the River Spirit. Miyazaki drew that scene (with the bicycle!) from a memory of cleaning the river and pulling up all of the gross debris with his friends when he was a child.

This is the first studio Ghibli that I watched when I was 13, it scared me but I braved myself up cause Chihiro was not scared, she kept going, so I thought I should too. The movie was mesmerizing to me as a kid, sometimes I forget and wondered if the movie was real in my memory or was it a fever dream until I confirmed it was a movie and not some kind of nightmare when J was 16/17 lol. Also Haku was my childhood crush.

The quote about 'Spirited Away' from the director Hayao Miyazaki (2001) "there's the trend like 'all you have to do is making stories about growing'. But in reality, I don't tkink I've grown up for 60 years. If I had to say, then I've come to control myself better than before. So I wanted to explode the idea that "growing up and love make movies great". I think no one can remember all the things you've done in your life. But like Zeniba said, you never forget things that happened to you. maybe we don't remember it but it exists somewhere. And Chihiro also remember the memories of that world. When I was working on this film, I suddenly remember the memory of me at the water treatment plant where I went to as school activity when I was in the third grade. I was looking at huge underground tank and after that, I was always drawing that tank for a while. I think our memories and experiences including DNA are always connected to somewhere we don't know. I don't think What Chihiro experienced was just a dream and I wanted to show that everything she saw actually happened. So I made the last scene which shows leaves on the car and the Hair tie from Zeniba ( but chihiro doesn't notice she's wearing it). Otherwise it's just sad. Because she finally met someone who accept her but she had to leave. If she stayed there a little longer, she could get to know everyone at the buthhouse and realize there's so many people that are different. This movie actually is painful." (I'm japanese so, sorry for my english and thank you for reading this long ass comment!)

This movie touches upon what was happening in Japan when poor parents were selling their children into prostitution, to repay their debts. There are many Japanese references throughout the movie like parents feasting with food they don't own, the bathhouse were Chihiro is working there, her name change to "Sen" as her "worth" as a prostitute, finding a way to get out of there by herself, her parents don't remembering her anymore "because they are just pigs", all the japanese gods visiting Yubaba's bathhouse are all males and many more. Hayao Miyazaki himself said in an interview that the best way to show Japanese society and the sex industry was through this film, which makes it even greater - exposing some truths about our world.

Tbh the movie isn't really scary or disturbing for kids. Kids have more fantasy and imagination and they enjoy such creatures and such a world. I was surprise that you thought the movie was scary and disturbing 😂 I never heard that before bc it's a kids movie and for that it was full of fantasy and adventures. I watched the movie when I was like 5 years old and I watched it every year with my sister when it was on tv. It's really not scary as a kid. And if you don't want that Charlotte sees something like that then you are really too overprotective parents (no offense)😂. She has to handle movies like that or she will not be able to watch most movies 😂btw this movie got an Oscar. Love the reactions you do on the channel❤

hey, for some non-reason i was terrified of muppets as a kid. Puppets sure, but specifically that muppet/sesame street type puppetry triggered me. & bees oh lord, anytime bees are on the screen i couldn’t deal. Who can say what was cool for one kid isn’t overwhelming to another. People are defensive b/c this movie is the kind to really shape you when you were young (me included) but i think you as parents are fine setting your boundaries if like you know your kid has a phobia or just you know your kid’s quirks. Love the channel!

All of the Studio Ghibli films are pretty magical. Fun facts: Spirited Away actually never had a script in the beginning. It had rich and developed characters but Miyazaki actually never has an actual script when he starts animating. They usually finish the plot in the middle of storyboarding. Another fun fact, Hayao Miyazaki did everything. He wrote, directed and drew the storyboards for the whole movie. Basically, what the rest of the animation staff, writers, and illustrators did was based off his entire vision. His attention to such small details is really amazing and what draws us in. John Lasseter is really great friends with Miyazaki. Studio Ghibli once visited Disney to learn more about American animation back then. The names of each characters have a deep meaning. Boh means "little boy/son", Kamaji is "old boiler man", Yubaba means "old bathhouse witch" and Zeniba means "money witch". Did you guys also recognize that Chihiro's english voice actress was Lilo from Lilo and Stitch? Spirited Away won an Academy Award in 2003 for best animated feature. But Miyazaki actually didn't attend the ceremony. He later revealed in 2009 that his producers had asked him to keep it quiet but he was strongly opposed to the American invasion of Iraq at that time which is why he politely declined attending the 2003 Academy Awards ceremony.

Charlotte will soon be ready to see Totoro or Ponyo and she will exhaust you with the looping B.O everywhere (house, car, vacation) hahaha. PS : Most of Ghibli's animated films have a morality or rather lessons that some people forget or ignore, and Chihiro's is about appearances.

This is my favorite anime movie (not animated that's Lilo and Stitch). Looked through what you've seen. Anime recommendations: clannad (romance/adversity/mystery that culminates in the end of second season after story), the twelve kingdoms (female king Arthur if you can survive the first 6 episodes it's amazing), magical girl madoaka (turns the magical girl tropes on there head in a horror sort of way) and Hakouoki Shinsengumi Kitan (Dr. Jekyll /Mr. Hyde meets vampires, historical fiction). Non anime: Buffy (vampire and damsel turned on head, many have to get through the first season and a half but worth it as it gets seriously deep), Babylon 5 (sci Fi adventure with plenty of war and intrigue, deep thought and character growth that really endears itself to you both early on but really by the middle of season 2 as well) and Eureka (US Marshall and his delinquent daughter stumble on to a town of scientists, where both serious and hilarious consequences ensue)

This reaction could be compared to a situation where a teacher would give young primary school students to read an excellent piece of literature, but that would be a complete waste of time because these kids would not be mature enough, smart enough, emotionally developed to perceive the beauty of the language, or the metaphors, or any other literary devices or even the text as a whole piece of art - so the message would be lost, and they would be confused and would not be able even to appreciate the amazing piece of literature they would have been given... Also could be compared to a situation where people who are used to junk food and every other food additive on the 'if you actually want to be healthy-don't put that in your mouth' list, and people who consume processed food on daily basis, and then someone would make them lovely salad with all natural olive oil, pepper, lemon, fresh vegetables and cheese - no over-sweetened salad sauces; would these people like the salad? Would they appreciate the colours and the taste of actual non-processed food? Yeah, most likely they would not. Actually good food ir scary for many people too. And a great piece of literature can also be incomprehensible, or make no sense for some...

First I use google translate. So my English comment is not good and strenge.(ToT) This movie has a lot of visual expressions and music that are not purposely explained. It is the Ghibli movie that the audience considers. Example Sen→Childen growth(work and polite) Noface→darkside of modern society( Lack of communication skills, Lonelyness, desire, overeating, false wealth). Train passenger→Tired life dead soul and heavy (sorrow) baggage. Sticky Guardian→Human environmental destruction of the river etc... Finally Haku→Sen's old brother(She rescued and dead in river) ↑↑↑Seriously This movie is find ethics and philosophy and metaphor

Although this is like Anime's Titanic in terms of box office, I never quite got into it For me Chihiro was a whiny screeching protagonist whose whole journey was dampened by the fact that it was so she would feel better about moving house. The conclusion of never seeing Haku, Zebaba and Lin is something Ghibli has frequented in and I've never liked, the instant forgiveness of No Face was abrupt too 'you tried to murder me, hop on this train with me to visit some paper plane witch!' The allegory of child slavery did not go over my head either, but I don't think it's a bad film just not a film for me - of Ghibli I much prefer happier tales like Laputa Castle in the Sky, Howl's Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, Whisper of the Heart, The Cat Returns and From Up on Poppy Hill

Personally, I don't think it's such a good idea to keep kids away from slightly scary movies. Especially when they start to get clever, around 7 or 8 I suppose? For the same reason people let kids watch Doctor Who - the comedy and the resolved ending teaches them that they can deal with the scary parts of life because the sun comes out and life returns to peacetime. Plus, some kids love to be scared - the more imaginatively, the better!

Who comes up with this? Much of this comes from Japanese mythos.

I love how Doctor Who fans yell at you guys in every reaction video......hahahaha, it doesn't matter what the video is.......This is all your fault by the way, people adore you and Doctor Who fans want you two on board so bad. You are the final holdouts in their mind........hahahaha. You guys rock, I wish I could afford more than $1 buck on patreon you guys are worth it.......where's Beemo? it is hard to think the show was great with no appearance by the "Meow Meow"......

@Thomas Meehan No; there is a time and a place for your "passions", and it's on the videos labeled "Doctor Who". They're busy parents who have to work, but they haven't forgotten their beloved fans; pestering them won't make them drop the reaction any sooner. So just be patient, and be nice, and everything will be just fine. ^__^
