So, humans bad / nature good, is not the intended take away here. Lady Eboshi's methods weren't perfect but her motivations were very admirable. She was protecting the discarded and downtrodden of society. She liberated prostitutes and cared for lepers, she protected those who sought sanctuary from the Emperor's soldiers, and she was deeply loved by all those under her charge. Her motivation wasn't greed, it was to protect those who couldn't defend themselves. The forest gods certainly weren't perfect either. They had no compassion for human life and quarreled with each other in much the same way humans do. The message was balance and harmony, that's why Ashitaka never chose one side over the other.

Yeah Miyazaki never wanted to write clear villains, only people in positions that make them act in negative ways towards others. No one is really bad. The demands of the war, the exiling of the lepers, aggression, even if it is there to seemingly protect others. Those are the actual problems here (kinda like in the real world)

Lady Eboshi was by far the most despicable person in this film encroaching on the gods land destroying the forest and killing a benevolent forest spirit yes it maybe for her people but its still an evil act driven by her beliefs. Trying to kill Ashitaka while guess who saved him when he didn't have too that's right the very spirit of the forest she decapitaded , for what reason again? but I do agree no one was perfect in this film that's why it's a 10 outta 10 for me just tired of everyone saving grace for Lady Eboshi but the fact is she was the single most villainous person in the film.

@@windandcloudshadow158 she’s really not. If she stops mining iron the emperor would slaughter iron town. The women were saved from having to work at brothels, the lepers were given genuine compassion. She not just gave them work, she cleaned them, bandaged them. She went the extra mile. Food is scarce, in iron town these downtrodden people have plentiful food. And benevolent forest spirit? It is the god of both life and death, it gives and takes as it sees fit. It’s a force of nature first, living being second. It is not benevolent, it’s lawful neutral if anything, indifferent but fair.

There isn't really any heroes or villains in this story, only perspectives. Ashitaka and mononoke are definatly the protagonists and each side thinks they are doing what's right, the only villain is the idea of blind hate and ignorance. That's why the main quote of this movie is "see with eyes unclouded by hate."

It’s the moral ambiguity of the movie that makes it so special. It’s not a simplistic good guys vs bad guys simplistic Hollywood plot. If anything, the movie approximates the paradoxes of humanity and life. This is why it is unparalleled story telling.

You know for humans, this quick reaction shows you two as being disturbingly against the humans in the movie. The problem is not the humans, it's the ignorance shown to those not in power and the hatred the oppressed would use to fight with. Lady Eboshi is a good person. She has built her town to support women that had been on the raw end of society. And taking in lepers instead of killing them or letting them starve. Giving everyone dignity in their work. Lady Eboshi is making iron to make these people's lives better. The spirits are dying of due to the progress and some natural regression. They are attacked because they are also attacking humans. The ape spirits are killing and eating the humans. Thats why the town started to just burn everything to the ground because the loggers were getting captured and eaten. All the spirits are not blameless. There was no compromise between them. That's why the conflict escalated to that point before Ashitaka arrived.
@Zarola
@Zarola 4 жыл бұрын
You guys mention the contract like some evil scheme. They live in a feudal society and the Emperor can either be happy or unhappy. Happy? Your town can live and prosper. Unhappy? The Emperor could potentially send waves of soldiers into the town, take over the seat of power, and/or raze it to the ground. If Lady Eboshi gets the contract done, she and her town of laborers can live in relative peace for some time. It's not a master evil plan. She doesn't even trust the messenger of the King (red nose guy) to actually follow his word and leave them alone. If she refuses and loses the fight with invaders (Emperor employed armies and assassins) her "girls" and the lepers will be forced back to the same marginal state they were in their hometowns. The patriarchy is established to not like Lady Eboshi being a woman in power. No matter the girls and lepers have metalwork skills they will not be allowed to continue in their free ways. That's why they fight so hard and relentlessly against the Spirits and the army. When someone saves you from a pitiful life and gives you an opportunity to be useful and skilled, why would you want to go back?

Exactly. This story is amazingly deep. It doesn't claim that one side is pure evil or good. But that rather we need to find balance. Balance between humans and beasts, nature and progress. Ashitaka represents this strive for balance, which is why he never tries to harm Eboshi or San. He never takes a side, and is just trying to make both sides find a common ground. This is further the reason why at the end of the movie, he stays with Irontown while San stays with the forest gods. They are both working together to teach both sides how to co-exist.

I know that in theory, Lady Eboshi is the villain... but at the same time, she's a hero for her people. She "saves" women from prostitution and give jobs for leprosy people that are forgotten by society. Princess Mononoke kills innocent from the village that are just trying to survive. Everybody trying to survive on an unfair world. Well, we know that this movie has many layers, showing that stories don't need to be super simplistic. So that's why it's a classic.

Many of Miyazaki films touch on the nature of rural vs urban but Mononoke probably hits it the hardest, they did a good job with not making the industry all evil though; each side had been consumed by inner darkness and suffered for their mistakes, Moro blindly hated all humans and died in favour of Ashitaka's compassion while Eboshi, driven by hopes that the god's blood could cure her lepers, tampered with the natural order and caused more danger for her people, only getting a second chance by seeing her mistake. It's also one of the most violent of the Studio Ghibli films Eboshi actually says Princess Mononoke once when telling Ashitaka about her. Released in 1997, most of it was hand-drawn with bits of CGI mainly for the demon arm stuff, the voice cast is pretty stellar too; Minnie Driver (Jane from Disney's Tarzan), Billy Bob Thornton (Davy Crockett in The Alamo), Tara Strong (god, so many), Claire Danes (Homeland or Juliet from the DiCaprio Romeo and Juliet), Billy Crudup (Dr Manhattan from the Watchmen movie), Gillian Anderson (Scully), Jade Prinkett Smith (Niobe from the Matrix Sequels) and John DiMaggio (Bender from Futurama) among others. The spirit DID die still, it got its head back yes but that only served to replenish the land. It is implied that it'd reincarnate.

Both ways of speaking 'Ghibli' are right and wrong at the same time. One way is how the company name is spoken. The other is the origin of the word which is the name of a wind coming from the Sahara blowing over the Mediterranean to Italy. When they took the name of the wind, they unknowingly spoke it the wrong way as the name of the wind, but it became the right way to speak it as the name of the company. BTW, is Lady Eboshi really evil? I'm not saying she is good, but remember, all the girls and women in her town were prostitutes, most of them have been forced into it by circumstances, others sold to a brothel by their own families. She also took the Lepers in and cared for them, people that would have died on the street from starvation after being discarded by society. While they are still dying, they are cared for and fed now. And she protects them from war, from exploitation and from slavery. Not only that, she gave them the means to protect themselves. She also keeps her bargains. Like I said, she is not good and her methods are more than just questionable, but evil? And in the end she see's it. They are going to rebuild Irontown, but better than it was before.

Lady Eboshi wasn't evil; she wanted to protect the weak, like her leppers and the peasants against the Samurai warriors, especially the woman so they could defend themselves. She had a noble cause but went the wrong way about it when she agreed with the deal of the Emperor's spy/agent to hunt the Spirit of the Forest. The deal was that the lake, mountain and forest would be hers to do as she pleased, protected by the Emperor. She would win on 2 front; no more attacks by samurai and no more spirits. The most evil character is Jiko-bô, who even when nice always has an ulterior motive. San can also be seen as evil, the villagers certainly think she is! Only Ashitaka can be considered a hero because he followed Hī-sama elder's advice; "To look at the world with eyes unclouded by hate." so he tries to understand everybody and only defend himself or the defenseless. He chose a side once he has seen both side of the conflict and tried to broker peace.

There are many different peoples and ideologies in here. Ashitaka represents one of the last remnants of the Ezo (Ainu) people who were driven from mainland Japan by the Yamato Japanese. The first shogun (not ruling), was appointed to drive out the Ezo people, and today only a few survive in Hokkaido. You have the samurai who are trying to get stronger, learning new technologies, encroaching on nature. And when you destroy nature (like what we’re doing now), nature can strike back... but if we can try to understand and live in harmony with nature, everyone wins.

I guess the impression about Ghibli movie is little different between Japanese and others. Because to understand Ghibli movie, you need to understand Japanese culture first. (Especially “spirited away”! You defiantly need to understand Shindo before watching it.) To understand anime which is not from Ghibli, you don’t need to know about Japanese culture, but for Ghibli, it has a lot of essences based on Japanese culture or traditions.
