What happened to not letting your kids go up to ANY unknown dog? A random dog could feel threatened and nip the kid, but distracting your dogs could be incredibly dangerous for your safety.

I've always taught my children to never bother a service dog. They can look real quick cause that's what children will do but I do not allow them to talk to the service dog or go near it. It's called respect. More people need to learn it.

My mum always told me, "If you see a dog with a vest on in public, don't touch it or even look at it. It's working and if you distract it, it's owner might die." It's a bit morbid to say to a 6 year old, but it worked well. I hate when people do this. I'm going to get a service dog soon for my deafness because I can't hear noises like telephones, smoke alarms, and school bells so a service dog could literally save my life in the event of a fire.

I do not once say a thing to the children. I have a 4 year old son. I'm 18 weeks pregnant with our second little boy. I understand babies. I only ever spoke the adults. The irresponsible parents, who could not keep their BABIES away from dogs they know nothing about for one. For two, a dog that IS LABELED in a service animal only store. A dog that I rely on for MY safety. For the safety of my unborn BABY. Never once did I speak to the children. Never was I upset with the children I'm only upset with naive, irresponsible parents who can't use a little common sense. Regardless, it's illegal to interfere with a working Service Animal. My life is literally in my dogs paws. I can't afford some parent with no common sense Walking their child over, setting their child down in front of me, and watching as their child comes up to me and my dog. What happened to parents caring about their child's safety and not allowing their children to go up to a random dog in case the dog bites?? I didn't speak to the children. I will continue to speak to irresponsible parents. Let someone get offended. It's a lot better than me and my unborn baby ending up in the hospital due to some random stranger not having any sense and distracting my service dog. I have to do what's best for MY health and MY safety. Im not interested in coddling some strangers butt hurt feelings. I'm interested in going home. Not being in ambulance.

I was simply making the suggestion of more clearly labeling your dogs, may help you experience less confrontation and anxiety that some of these experiences may cause you. An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure (I think that's how the saying goes) Dealing with people personally causes me allot of anxiety, so in my experience it has helped to be proactive. I understand all of the laws unfortunately most don't. And I wasn't suggesting you were inappropriate in how you react to kids at all.

But, I just read that as you should not pet any service dog your not familiar with especially children. then got confused after misreading & thought you should not pet children and thought wait... children are service dogs since when perhaps there in a dog onesie.. My inability too properly read and comprehend the simple & correctly written sentence was more hilarious and took me longer to realise my mistake and leave the thought tangent than I care to admit.

I feel like fake service dogs are making this accure even more often. When people with fake service dogs enter a store they probably love all the attention they get, so people don't understand that if a service dog is real, distracting it can be life threatening, or even just another inconvenience the handler shouldnt have to deal with every time they leave the house

It is also the owners choice of their dog can be pet or not. My last SD enjoyed it, and it gave me a chance to educate the past 6 years- as I thought I was the only SD pair around.... Turns out there are alot of us locally that were afraid to go in public cuz ppls reactions. After I got my town educated(I had to be tough and willing to dish out anything they were willing to throw at us) we started seeing more pairs... It was great. Now my SD doesn't want to be pet, as she's new... She gets distracted easier than the old man, who would alert even with a gaggle of kids loving on him. So it depends on the owner and the dog. Mine doesn't like being pet, she just tolerates it from non family when I tell her to. So I have patches to warn, and the very thing I taught ppl was to look at the patches, and if unsure how to move around the pair- ask. Specifically my nurses XD 🤷

@ServiceDogPaws
@ServiceDogPaws 4 жыл бұрын
Sort of. So eye contact is big in dog communication. Most dogs if you just stare at them will be thrown off by it. When two dogs approach each other, it's normal for them to avert their eyes. A direct stare makes them feel uncomfortable, and an uncomfortable dog is an unpredictable dog. Obviously Service Dogs are trained to be predictable and calm. But it can still make them very uncomfortable. Hence, distracted. Dog's also use eye contact to express emotions, both positive and negative. In their wolf ancestors, staring is considered threatening and rude. Some dogs still retain that attitude. That’s why you should never stare down strange dogs or hold dogs still to stare into their eyes. In untrained dogs it can cause aggression. In ServiceDogs it can cause a distraction from them feeling uncomfortable.

They didn't teach it at my school, but I once had a sub who was almost completely blind, so he needed a service animal. As soon as he entered the room, we were instantly told to not even look at the dog, so that's how I learned about service animals. Also the sub had amazing hearing (to the point where I could tell when he heard even a slight creek in the building) and he could tell whenever people were looking at him or not

I had an ex that was very abusive when I developed two autoimmune diseases. Your now hubby looks like a very kind man. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t know that when a service dog is in uniform you are not to distract them. It is up to parents to teach their kids. To be honest I'm still trying to get better at not even smiling at service dogs, especially when they look up at me. Sometimes their warm hearts melt my soul and i cant help but smile. I used to, when i was a teen and younger, say things like cute doggo as i walked past, and the owner would always just say a quick thanks. I lived in an Arabian country until highschool so i used to be COMPLETELY ignorant about even disabilities and service dogs. I'm getting better at not even approaching to ask questions even if I'm curious since I'm thinking of getting a service dog for my severe Depression and anxiety episodes i get. But honestly if an ignorant foreigner was able to educate herself quick on these matters, so can parents who've lived in the US their whole lives!

I was confused, but I understood that I couldn’t pat the pupper. The person helped me back to the front of the store and waited there with me until my mom showed up. Have you ever had someone go complain after you told them to not interfere with your service dog and have you ever had a manager or employee try or kick you out for something exactly like happened in the video? The other thing, was both dogs leashes twisted on purpose? Having Max around while training Mya, does that affect your training with her or is there a point that when you will have to leave Max home so you can spend more one on one time training Mya?
@ServiceDogPaws

So far, no complaints. And managers are usually understanding. The leashes weren't twisted on purpose it just kept happening. Mya is learning a lot from having a Max around. But eventually I will start to leave Max and just take Mya. That's a ways off though. And I'm sure I'll rotate in and out from working both of them, to working Mya, to working just Max and back and forth until she's ready to take over.

It’s up to the owners to graciously educate people, not to expect every stranger to know all that there is. The problem is many get so “precious” about it, they assume their knowledge is everyone’s knowledge, even tho they themselves lack knowledge on other things. It gets weird when people are so sensitive and harsh. We all had a time when we first learned about things.

This is exactly why if I ever have kids, I'll teach them at a young age to be respectful to people's pets and space. You never know if it's a service pet/dog or not, and what's worse is that distracting any service animal can be dangerous. All parents should also teach their kids this.

@@Mrs-K-Wray it's heartbreaking. But it just isn't fair to make him work when he's uncomfortable and itchy. It's a grass allergy. So there's not much we can do but keep him on steroids. It's not affecting his ability to work. But I wouldn't want to have to work being so itchy and uncomfortable. And I'm sure all the going places may cause him to flare up more too

Service Dog Paws Awwww. A lot of ppl in your situation would re-home him and get new. But your simply giving him early retirement and keeping him, which is brilliant for you and him, as you have shown in a lot of your vlogs, he is a part of your family and the bond will never break. He will still alert you as that’s what he does but he will be able to relax a bit. People should take a leaf out of your book. Xx

I'm sorry but I have kids and service dogs, and from what I can see your dogs are not clearly identified as such. It appears you have to get right up on them to see the small writing on the dark harness. Kids are naturally curious. You can't expect people to just know they are service animals. I do have a chronic disease too since age 7( 30+yrs), and understand the stress of it all, but you can't just make assumptions about what others know or don't, especially if you want to educate people
@ServiceDogPaws
@ServiceDogPaws 4 жыл бұрын
I understand that. Regardless, parents shouldn't allow their kids to run up to dogs they don't know out of concern of the safety of their child, and not wanting their child to get bit. But I'm also not going to have Max in his full harness in the Alabama heat. But I understand what you're saying.

@@ServiceDogPaws I feel you. In Texas I'm going back and forth deciding on a summer harness for my GSD.... It's her first summer working with me, my last SD had a simple harness with patch room, but for my current- I need all the patches I've got. She also helps me carry things.... But it's either I've got her identified clearly, or I have her in a work harness that's cooler than the rest. She's mobility so I can't skimp there to make her harness cooler... I am just also not comfortable being tackle hugged by strange kids just cuz my dog looks so friendly. My last dog didn't mind, but he was a lab/border collie. I'm not worried about saph reacting and hurting the kid, more I'm worried she'd get hurt trying to move without knocking into me. I've trained her around my nieces and nephew, she's great. But she's also off lead most of the time to where she can avoid them...

Grow with Nature agreed... there is a reason why ambulances have horns and flashing beacons... and not rainbow paint with "free candy" signs... without agreed upon minimum conspicuity markers we are ot even going toward the start of a solution. Harness/collars 1 - 2 inches wide with high visibility standardised color patterns (orange x blue ?) would be a good start. (Then we can negotiate for horns and beacons)
@wildlifesymphony

@@G_de_Coligny I'd be up for a standard color.. My first SD had a bright red harness and a service dog marked collar... That was the best I could guess to show he wasn't normal. Red = medical. My current SD has a wide pink collar, cuz too many thought she was a boy and it annoyed me (cuz they always thought my boy SD was a girl since he wore red). But she has a tactical harness for her mobility tasks, plenty of patch room... It screams please don't touch me. She looks so friendly cuz she enjoys her job... Sigh.

I've taken care of a lot of my dogs at work and I can say that even without the visibility of the service collar, kids should never be allowed to just run up to dogs. Many dogs can be happy with owners and not very happy with kids grabbing them randomly. And whose going to get blamed when kids get hurt? The pet owner.

We're not all bad parents! I have taught my 9 yr old since about 3 - service dogs are not to be petted or talked to and why. The only time he may stare is when they have their backs to us walking away from us - only if he hasn't seen that breed as service dog before. If he spots a service dog he shows my only to make sure it is one ( I have reactive GSD I put vest on when we go to HD or Lowes to identify her need for space). Which is what we ALL should be teaching our kids. All other dogs 9 yr old knows to ask owner first. It isn't hard to teach a child these things!

Some people genuinely don’t know that you can’t pet or interact with service animals, I didn’t know that for a while until I saw a video about it. As far as kids go they don’t really know any better and often get excited when they see animals. Now I wouldn’t run up and try to pet someone’s dog, cat, etc without their permission anyway, because not everyone wants people touching their animals. The good thing is that there are videos like this up to educate people as a lot of people don’t know about service dogs.

When my son first saw a service dog 🐕‍🦺 he got crazy excited and wanted to go say hi, I took an moment and kneeled next to my son (aways away from the animal and the handler) and explained why he couldn't go say hi and that the dog had a very important job and he's working. It's really not that hard... why are people like that...

Again even in a public places there are laws which again your uneducated brain does not compute. The parent was interacting and distracting a service dog which includes openly stairing which can draw the dogs attention from the disabled owner. Any interaction and distraction of a service dog is actually a misdemeanor.

Big difference however in therapy dog and service dog. "Service animal" means an animal that is trained to perform tasks for an individual with a disability. The tasks may include, but are not limited to, guiding a person who is visually impaired or blind, alerting a person who is deaf or hard of hearing, pulling a wheelchair, assisting with mobility or balance, alerting and protecting a person who is having a seizure, retrieving objects, or performing other special tasks. Therapy dogs are there to comfort and interact with many people a service dog aids one person and it's ILLEGAL for anyone but the owner to interact with a service dog. When you interfere and interact it distracts them from those tasks Within the US and within different states there are interference and distractions laws. Some stating that it is a misdemeanor to interact or distract a service animal in anyway These laws are put there for the safety of the disabled individual which the dog works for. Staring openly at a service dog calling to it nearing it can be an interference which classes as a misdemeanor or a felony depending on the state. It can be very dangerous for the owner to have their service dog messed with. Yes, maybe the woman in the video over reacted however considering she is ill and that dog is medical alert you can not fully blame her. If you're crazy about dogs, you've probably found it difficult to "mind your manners" in the presence of service animals. These dogs are so beautiful and carry themselves with such quiet dignity that they're nearly irresistible. But resist we must. Whether the dog is in service or in training to serve, the rule of thumb is: don't touch or distract him. This is because interacting with a dog that is working or training could put the other half of his team - his owner - in harm's way. It could also interfere with the dog's focus and inhibit his ability to pick up commands. In case you're not sure of proper etiquette when you encounter a working dog, the following are some do's and don'ts for behavior around a service dog team (dog and owner).

I needed a service dog,but the apartment complex I live in discriminated me by saying my dog would be too large (I was going to get a german shepard,fully trained). Then within a few months,a man moved in and was allowed his german shepard mix! This apartment complex is so shady. If you are a "favorite" person of the office people you can get away with anything. And Im stuck here. Cant afford a different place. It sucks.

A tip is to do training sessions on just them heeling together. Make them stay there and do it two or three times a day. Until they are good give Max to your husband so you can focus on Mia only. The leashes will tangle less
