I have a sleep disorder that causes me to hallucinate during my waking hours, and when I was a teenager I learned how to train my dog to point at any living thing nearby (including bugs and mice) like a hunting dog. For years, every time I got freaked out, I could trigger her to point and if she was confused and didn't point, that meant whatever it was wasn't real. When I lost her, it wasn't just losing my life companion or best friend, it was losing a medical lifeline. The months between her loss and when I got and trained up a new support (a cat, if you can believe it. he has more anxiety than I've ever seen in a cat and a hunting drive that means if there is anything alive nearby, he is either about to eat it or screaming at the top of his little siamese lungs) were incredibly tough. I'm so glad this community has Kodi's back.

I don't want to be polemical, but it's outrageous that you have to pay for a service dog. My big sister has epilepsy and has absence seizures. At one point, she was having up to five or six per day. I say this because I can't imagine going through what my sister or Kodi goes through everyday and I am sure that having a service dog is very helpful and important. Having a chronic illness can truly turn your life upside down. My sister has been trying to get disability for several years and unfortunately she keeps getting denied. Thankfully, my mom and I work with her and we are able to be there for her during her seizures.

I'm sorry your sister is going through this. The way to get Social Security to pay up is to bombard them with paperwork. That's what I did to get my son in and 25 years later, it's still going strong. What I did was, every time they said no, I'd photocopy all his documents, stuff them in a Manila envelope and send it back out on the very same day. After about 5 tries, they gave him benefits just to get rid of me. Give it a try and may God bless you and your family.

I can relate to Kody's struggle. A distracted driver hit and killed my service dog. It was 2 1/2 years without my lifeline to the world! I have my new service dog and people don't realize how important my Pilot, a Rough Coated Collie, is to my everyday needs and my safety. I paid $70,000 USD for Pilot. After age 60 I can only get a service dog if I privately pay for the dog. Pilot will retire in about 7 years and I'm banking on a cost of $125,000 USD. Even as a 100% service connected, permanent and totally disabled US Vet, the VA does not cover this expense. But a nursing home is far more expensive and I want to live as independently as possible for as long as possible! G-d Bless MJ and Kody!

It's awful how people who really need help are so ignored in the US (and the fact that medical bills have to be paid by yourself and are so astronomically high- it seems cruel to me). We're really lucky in Germany. I think that if you're disabled or something like that you get money AND, if needed, a service doggie or other things to help you with every day life. Cut your costs, get an 5th wheel RV, and set it up somewhere cheap like Caballo Loco Ranch (a 55+ community). I highly doubt they’d turn you away but that’s the low desert of Arizona I’m talking about…you might not be able to live there because he’d overheat with his floofy coat? Because if they don’t, that’s probably a good place to inquire. If not, there are a lot of other RV places that are cheap and safe. I wouldn’t judge you and nobody else would either… BLM land is completely free to boondock on (depending on your level of disability it might still be an option for you). The America the Beautiful annual passes costs $80 a year. _I think_ that allows you to park your rig at any National Park Campground “free.” “A pass is your ticket to more than 2,000 federal recreation sites. Each pass covers entrance fees at national parks and national wildlife refuges as well as standard amenity fees (day use fees) at national forests and grasslands, and at lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. A pass covers entrance, standard amenity fees and day use fees for a driver and all passengers in a personal vehicle at per vehicle fee areas (or up to four adults at sites that charge per person). Children ages 15 or under are admitted free.” - NPS . gov 😊 There are many, many cooler climates than Arizona. God bless you! Hope you can retain your independence for as long as possible! With God all things are possible for those who _believe._

Luke wasn't a service dog, but he was an emotional support dog for my father. My father has PTSD from the military after having to go overseas in Iraq. I remember the first day we got Luke. I was three. Dad wanted nothing to do with Luke, but slowly they grew a bond I have never seen before. Luke was not just a pet, but he was my big brother, my fathers son. The day we lost him, I'd never seen by dad so quiet. Luke passed away at a ripe 13 years of age. For a Husky, that's an extremely long time. Luke knew his days were coming, but he held on for longer than he needed to. Luke fought, just so he could see us happy. And I hope Luke is happy where he is now. I am Hearing Impaired, no resolution from surgeries, hearing aids, no cochlear implants because I can't wear a hearing aid. SS insists I do not have disability, yet I cannot teach... Bills?? I have them too, my home trained, qualified Service Dog had cancer, he died three years ago, I am still paying off his bills. With a Service Dog I was more safe going out into the public, I have been mugged twice when he wasn't with me, and feel safer when I hear a sound I can't identify. The reality of how a Service Dog improvs lives is underrated by the public. My bills can be crippling as well, job prospects dim, yet we are supposed to"get a lawyer", yeah right. it can be expensive, yes. But sometimes people are able to train their own service dogs without a professional ❤️ so don’t give up hope. Even if you can’t do the training, maybe you have a friend or someone in your community who could help. Light mobility can be trained quite easily to the right dog. Heavy mobility (supporting your weight/etc) can be harder and you’d definitely need support to train plus a lot of work with a veterinarian. Most psych tasks you or a friend should be able to train fairly easily. You’ve got this! I got an SDiT and trained her in psych and light mobility , and I’d never even had a dog before.

I can totally understand Cody's plight. I've been chronically ill most of my life. I've been sick since I was 12, and there's way too many to list. I did have stroke and lost must of my vision and our rescue dog Capone aka Popo started leading me around so I didn't fall over things. He's done this all on his own and given me my independence back. Animals are absolutely amazing!!!

Thank you so very much for helping people and their pets. May God smile on you always! My little Sooty girl saved my life. I was at my lowest point. I was sat on my bed ready to end my life. Sooty stopped me. She laid across my lap and arms and gently chewing on the knife in my hand and licking my hands. Softly making sad groaning sounds. Until I let the knife go. She then put her paws around my neck, snuggled her head under my chin and wouldn't let go for ages. Sadly in 2021 Sooty who was a Powderpuff Chinese Created passed away at 18 years old. Her last few hours spent curled up in my lap. Like she was comforting me I guess. I was trying to comfort her. She gave me one last kiss on the cheek, snuggled up in my lap and passed away. How Sooty knew that I was going to end my life still I can not understand. I miss her every single day. She showed me what true love really means. Never under estimate the power of a pet.

This is exactly one of those times someone uses animals to make money. I trust this channel, but I dont trust this lady who said you can just take 1500 dollars and train any dog to be a service dog. Nothing about that is honest. Trainers dont start with adult dogs for this training, and they pick out puppies who have the right temperament. That is not a good choice of breed for a working dog. This is all lies.

as someone with invisible illness, though nowhere near as severe as poor Kodi, this hit me on a personal level. My own dog, while not trained as a service dog, is my daily comfort and I cannot imagine the trauma of losing a dog as suddenly and as violently as Kodi losing Bean. M.J is such a clever little miss and I recognise a lot of the natural responses that M.J has towards Kodi in my Coco. You cannot teach a dog empathy.

Do service dogs in the US have to pass any kind of testing? Do they get a state registered ID? In Germany you can only get professionally selected and trained service dogs that have a legal pass. And guide dogs for the vision impaired are free. I think the barely regulated system in the US is why there are so many issues with unbehaved and/or fake service dogs.

Thank you for doing such a kind thing to help out a pet owner who also needs her buddy to help her live her life. I don't know what I'd do without my ESA dachshund, who comes running when I have meltdowns to lick my face and insist I pet her, which is grounding for me and helps immensely. She diverts attention like this with anyone who smells like they're overstressed or crying if they're guests at my house. She also acts as company because I am nearly housebound, and she is my daily joy and best friend, and I couldn't live independently without a dog like her. Actual Service Dogs do such vital work.

Us disabled people, physically challenged people, are treated like the outcasts of society. We don't receive near the amount of help we need, from not so severe to the severe difficulties/medical issues, in the form of daily help to financially.... So to do this for a fellow disabled person brings me to tears..... And my lil dude, who was my everything dog, his name was Cody..... (named after commander Cody of star wars by my then 13 year old son in 2015). He and I had a bond like that.... So it just makes me appreciate this gift for her even more.... Thank you sooooo much... Today we had our first training session, and he did so great, I'm really proud of him. These dogs are life-savers, and its so great to see that they are slowly getting accepted. I live in Germany and due to my condition, its not possible to send him for training, I have to do it myself with my trainer, but its still really expensive. All the best for Kodi and MJ ❤ she will be a great service dog

I only recently sat down and had a conversation with a disabled service animal handler (and their helpful doggo), and seeing the love and attentiveness between both of them was quite heartbreaking. Not because I felt bad for either of them, but because there's so many people who could benefit so much from a service animal, but where I live the costs are over $50000 just for training and registration of service animals. Disability services wont cover it unless the proposed handler is medically stable and diagnosed with a very specific disability. The fact that life-saving disability aids can cost so much and not even be considered as 'worth it' to funding programs is appalling, particularly when it comes to service animals. It truly is an extra tax on disabled people - and we don't earn enough to begin with.
