I have 15 law boys. I live near a long, long time dealer who kept it going until he died in 2018 unfortunately. He didn’t sell new ones anymore of course but sort of hung out and maintained and repaired lawn boys for local folks who bought them there over the years. Mine are all commercial grade models except for a couple. My prize possession is my 1984 model 6262 commercial with blade brake clutch that was new in the box, never assembled. I’ve still never put it together. It was the best of the best. The dealer had many new old stock mowers that were sold at auction. And over 400 used ones in storage that needed some repairs, traded in, etc. I’ve used them since I was a kid in the 70’s. Family all had lawn boys. 32:1…all day long!!!

We have one for 40+ yrs. Because it is 2 stroke, you can use it to mow steep slopes without fear of starving the engine of oil. It is however difficult to start after sitting for any length of time but is relatively quiet once running. Excellent drive on it.

@@Legalmachinist should not be difficult to start. My 1956 5000 and 1979 7268 fire in two pulls everytime. Once in awhile they'll turn over in one pull. Non oxygenated 91 octane is the secret. Amsoil Saber mixed 32:1 is my preferred oil

The reason that plastic collar turns like it does is because the engine can run backwards. Only an issue with the D 600 engine. The D 400 does not have the issue as it has points. If you were to shut the mower off with the switch and just before it stopped completely you were to turn the switch back to on as the engine kicked back before stopping completely it could run backwards. The collar turns counter clockwise and shuts the fuel off by closing the throttle. Just a FYI.

We had a LawnBoy in the 80's. Simple, reliable Mower. Loaned it to s neighbor and supplied the Pre-mix gasoline. He decided to use his own Gasoline which wasn't Pre-mix. Seized the engine. Was too expensive to fix at the time and neighbor didn't give a crap. So another OMC LawnBoy went to the dump.

Ended up at a nice rpm... Ideally, this mower gov should be set at 3200 rpm. while under LOAD cutting grass, not spinning free. You want the rpm high up in that max HP power curve while under operating conditions on that high throttle setting. Just don't set the gov so high it over revs and you are all good. No one on mowing channels ever mentions that. I have a mud motor channel, that's how I figured it out.

Lawn-Boys of this vintage were to be serviced annually by your dealer's service department. Somewhere on YT is an old LB video for dealers that instructs them on up selling new blades and spark plugs every year, selling an extra spark plug, extra LB oil, a LB fuel can etc. It was cheesy and mostly unnecessary, but it worked and the mowers would last for decades and decades if maintained. Do keep in mind that LBs were easily 2x the price of the average mower. Our local LB dealer would pick up the mower, "tune it up" for the season with a new plug and blade, clean under the deck, inspect and clean the exhaust ports, clean the muffler, spot paint scuffs, lube the wheels and height adjusters, flush the fuel tank, clean the carb bowl, replace the fuel line, replace the starter rope at the least sign of wear, give it a good wash, test run it, and drop it back off with a full tank of fresh fuel. EVERY YEAR FOR DECADES. I have no idea what all this cost, but everyone on my mothers side of the family had Lawn-Boy mowers. The ones with real money had the self propelled variety. haha! That little dealer would service hundreds of mowers each year. All preventive maintenance. I remember the guy dropping it off in a jump suit uniform with his name embroidered on one side and Lawn-Boy logo on the other. It was a different time, and a different world really.

@@timewa851 Lawn-Boy's fate was sealed when Toro bought them. While they are still around, they are now just another consumer mower brand IMO. In the days I recounted above, nearly all of the professional landscapers(there weren't many and they mostly did commercial work like banks and businesses) in my area used Lawn-Boy mowers. Operators couldn't forget to check or change the oil, they were light and nimble to use, and they didn't rust out.

How can a jolt from a hammer ruin something in that engine? Do people realize how much impact is on that crankshaft everytime you hot something in the yard? People even bend cranks from hitting stuff and there's no internal engine damage. Now yeah, if you rear back and let go with a sledge hammer, something's gonna give. But just a reasonable lick with a typical ballpeen hammer isn't gonna hurt anything...
