My husband reads in the living room in the evenings and I’m sewing nearby and it’s nice. The glass towers work well. I can’t buy anymore though! I started with TWO. No more!!!

I like that you keep your Mom’s pin cushion where you will see it once and a while. I keep a few things from the women in my family around - a spoon in with the other spoons, old spools of thread in with my thread, button boxes etc. Feels encouraging...like they are cheering me on

I understand how that happens, Dee! Those fabric towers? I started with two and thought that would be “more than enough” space for fabric. Then I went to three. Then, lo and behold, I needed 4. Good grief!! I absolutely can’t get a 5th, I have a severe mandate (imposed by myself.) Why do all things sewing make us so happy?? All I know is that I’m thrilled there’s a whole community of great people who share this passion.😄Thank you for your sweet comments.💕

Hi TINA, thanks for coming over!😄 I am lucky that my husband doesn’t mind in the least. I think what he might mind (and he’s a super laid back sort) is the Fabric Creep. Heck, I mind it! But then I think of how much fun it is to acquire fabric and scheme up new projects for it, and I forgive myself. lol. I want my daughter to paint me a colorful picture that says Dining Room Seamstress in the center. Thought it would be cute - but I’m out of wall space!

Just found your podcast a week ago - and have gone back to watch all the old ones! Thanks for sharing your sewing and your sewing space with us. I have sewed my own clothing (some of it, anyway) all my life and its such FUN! I'd love it if you'd give us some insight into how you choose sizes and get things to fit you. The bane of my sewing existence. Too big, too small.....

Hello Shelley👋! Welcome! It’s great to have you here. How fabulous that you’ve sewn your own clothing all your life! That is such a skill and accomplishment!!👏👏I had long breaks (years long) where I didn’t sew anything. Then I picked up a pattern two years ago and made a dress and just sort of flipped for sewing again! It helps now that I have the luxury of time; my youngest is a senior in high school. I am having a lot of fun with the channel but I am new at this, and I bet you could tell!! I would love to talk about fitting in an upcoming video - great idea. Thanks for taking the sewing room tour and leaving me this nice comment.😄👍

Love your tour! One question. With your patterns, do you buy duplicates or do you have a system that you keep account of what you have? On your way to Naples stop by Wilmington and let's go fabric shopping!
@vivmomsews4962
@vivmomsews4962 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Virginia👋, believe it or not the “system” is in my head. Now, this could be construed as quite scary. But I’m literally in those pattern boxes multiple times a week, if not DAY, lol. I have definite things I avoid in patterns so I know instinctively which ones I wouldn’t buy, and the ones I do buy fall into broad but familiar lines as well. I really don’t repeat by accident much at all. I do on occasion buy repeats because I want to - as I cut all my patterns first go-round, and if it’s off I’ll buy another pattern to try again. Sounds decadent but I’m always shopping sales. Thanks for your interest!😄👍

Viv, loved the tour, I also use my dining room table for cutting fabric. I bought one of those corrugated folding cutting boards about 30 years ago and am still using. I really like your organization boxes, where did you buy them? It makes me happy to go through my patterns as well, several years ago I purged a bunch of my old patterns but wish I would have kept them, they were just getting out of hand. Judy😂

Hi Judy, so happy to see you here!😄 I put the pattern box into in the description box, like a dope I forgot it initially. That’s amazing about your folding cutting board - that one must be very well made to last so long. Cool.👍Aw shucks about the patterns. It does feel a little uncertain to send them out the door. I think I have so many now that I could offload quite a few and not even realize it. But no, a sewer knows. A sewer always knows!!🌸

Well Jill, you are a dear. Thank you for this lovely message!💕 I love that you complimented Candace’s work...makes a mom’s heart happy! The little needle tree is a favorite of mine - no more searching for hand needles. I forget where I put things in record time...I look down and it’s gone! What the heck!! My organization is helped considerably by the fabric cabinets and the set of drawers. Eternal vigilance to keep the sewing room clean! I have to vacuum after every project. I’m glad you relate to the left-side-of-the-table space being kept clear.😄

Aw Sally, you are such a dear. You spread so much happiness wherever you comment!💕 Thank you for these generous compliments. I do love a lot of color in my decorating. I’m not sure where that comes from, but I do know it helps to cheer me. Thanks for liking the mish-mash that is my pattern storage system! High praise to hear you call it genius!🌸😄 I like the surprise element of pattern searching. And the word “passionate” that you chose is spot on. Who knew I would fall so hard for sewing while in my 50’s?! It certainly never lighted me up like this before. Maybe with the children growing up and leaving home, sewing gives me a purpose in the midst of bittersweet change. I really think that’s it!

Thanks so much, Susan! Limited space calls for a bit more angling and fitting in. But it can be done! I’m fortunate to have the big kitchen table for cutting. Barring that, there is always the floor!😄👍 I’m glad you like the little needle tree, I love that thing. I am so glad I recently found your channel. During this COVID epidemic I have discovered KZbin and find enjoyment, inspiration and education in everything I used to do. I retired in 2014 because there was never enough time or energy to enjoy my many hobbies and I wanted to spend more time with my husband. Unfortunately, he had been diagnosed with lung cancer prior to my retiring, and years of dread, sadness and anxiety followed us as his cancer went into remission and recurrence. After several surgeries and treatments, he passed away 2-1/2 years ago. My love of art kept me sane during those trying years, but I had lost a lot of enthusiasm in my other hobbies. Now I am rediscovering my joy in sewing and am converting half of my family room into my sewing area. Watching you and a few others on KZbin sew and seeing your sewing space renews my spirit. Your calm and cheerful personality is a God-send! Thank you❣️

Oh, what a wonderful sewing area! I watch you all the time but this one caught my attention & really enjoyed seeing how you organize your things. I think I now know why storing my patterns in drawers don't really work for me!! But I can slide my chair to where they are & look through, so I'm not giving up on it yet. I'm just getting to the point of putting my sewing room together. (I was waiting on workmen after a move). Currently though, the room still has my chop saw set up for cutting & racks with tools, boxes of stuff, now new counters for the kitchen. I actually did set up one sewing machine & have done some pants revising (hems & such); not my idea of "real sewing"! Baby steps! My daughter helped me put up my big 3 mirror cabinet last week (normally for a bathroom, but over my dressing table) Weird to look in it & not only see my sewing table & machine but a woodworking shop!! Not sure I want wood chips mixed with thread & fabric scraps!!

Thank you for pointing me to this video! I just love the joy you have in this space. I have those kitten head buttons, I could not resist them (I wasn't even sewing much back then, and only by hand), and that navy blue with the white floral fabric you got in the shot towards the end of the fabric tour has a sibling in my fabric stash. I am kicking myself for not getting more yardage. I think my most favorite idea I may steal from you (with credit to you of course!) is the needle tree. I am always looking for my hand needles, and like to have an assortment of types and sizes at the ready as I embroider and do other textile crafts. I can't wait to hit the dollar tree and see if any of their flowers are acceptable to handle the load..or maybe make one of my own.. with scraps.. oh!... I adore the personal touches, your child's art (really nice too, I hope they still do artsy things) and your mother's pincushion. Seems there is too much to keep naming and this is turning into a bit more of a comment than would be appropriate LOL. Really, a fantastic space and thank you for sharing so much of yourself with us.

Hi Viv, Thank you for the peek inside your work-space! Wow, Candace is quite the artist. Lovely works. Well I got my wishes today, and that was I was hoping to see your GIANT collection of patterns! and your fabric stash (I knew they'd both be large) Patterns more so than fabric because you go thru the fabric while sewing. I REALLY LOVE those portable Pattern boxes they fit the patterns Perfectly. I was wondering why you didn't organize them by say skirts, dresses, tops, stretch knits etc. but your explanation was spot on. I get it. To get inspired by the surprise patterns. I really Love all the warm color tones of the paint on your walls, yellows, orange, red...very pretty. Thank You for the tour. I have a hook in my sewing room too. This will sound kind of funny but it works AWESOME. Okay you know how I sew for my daughter. First of all kids are impossible to stand still when trying on ANYTHING. She's just turning 9 this month. I made a kid size dress form out of a feed-sack! We have Chickens and ducks the feed-sacks are a woven water-resistant material very strong the sacks are able to hold 50lbs of feed. Anyway I took my daughters measurements turned the sack inside out (so it's white) filled it with fleece material....I know what if I want to use it? I have lots of fleece though. sewed it to her measurements, and where the neck is, I've placed a hanger that comes out and hangs very STILL ; ) on that hook and Not too heavy. :) Have a wonderful Vacation Viv.

Ok R, that dress you made for your daughter sounds incredibly creative and adorable! It reminds me of something so appealingly vintage. Well done!👍 You’re a fellow hook user! I can’t believe I talked about my hook twice in the video...it’s just a hook but I love how it folds up and that’s where I hang everything. I don’t even wear my makes until I’ve shot the video...funny huh. Glad you like the patterns (I added the box info to the description box) and you get the disorganization element.😄 How sweet of you to compliment my colorful walls. Some reactions are a bit more...subdued shall we say. But I’m a color nut. All of what you wrote was a joy to read. Keep sewing, keep writing!💕Thank you!

It’s special to think of people we know who sewed. I even think of my 7th grade home ec teacher - she was kind of an overwhelmed woman but who could blame her with a class full of 13 year olds?! We sewed a stuffed animal and I recall her going from sewing machine to sewing machine, helping us. I’m sure she started many on the path to a love for sewing.

Just watched your sewing room studio. I've decided, when I grow up, I wanna be just like you when it comes to organization. Love everything you did to organize your fabrics, notions, patterns and especially your fabrics. The way they're arranged makes it easy to see them and to keep them dust free, especially after washing. Lastly, the top you're wearing, you need to make it again. Next time, buy a roll of 'tear away' and a roll of 'cut away' stabilizer to use underneath the fashion fabric when embroidering. Instructions come with each to help you decide which to use on your project. Happy sewing.

I want to get one too... The top your're wearing is cute...looks great no matter what you say...I can appreciate how you feel about your kitty... I had a cat name Whiskers that my daughter left me when she moved away after high school... Whiskers lived to be 18 and 1/2 years old ...a gray tiger stripe American Tabby... It broke my heart when she passed ...I actually watched her take her last breath ...I will never forget that... Anyway .... I love that you always make me laugh and that's what we need more of in our lives.... Always looking forward to seeing you again on here... Viv, so glad you showed us your space, I absolutely love it! I also become overwhelmed by intense irritation if anything is in the space left of my sewing machine. I just can't work like that. It makes me go absolutely nuts. I hate feeling like things are going to get pushed off by fabric or that I wont know what's under there and I like a nice space for my project to "land". I love the fabric towers! I also need to see my fabric to be inspired by it, I tried storing it in my closet for a while, but I just prefer having it front and center showering me with its lovely beauty! And then when there’s some space in the cabinets I think “I can go fabric shopping!” Oh who am I kidding - I think that all the time, no matter what.

Hi Diane, lovely to hear from you. I went through a protracted absence from sewing - had a later-in-life baby, we moved, I started home schooling and that year my husband tore his Achilles’ tendon and had surgery. Sewing went out the window. I have just adored getting back to it, now that “the baby” is 17 and on the brink of high school graduation. Great tour. I really love the little tower with all your notions in it. I have to try to find something like that. Thanks for showing us how you do your sewing room. I can't stand anything, anywhere on my sewing table. Anywhere! All I need is one time for some fabric to catch on a pincushion or tray of tools, and go everywhere, and I'll also be very cranky. lol. I can find other places to put needed "ecutremant." I love those pattern boxes. I searched Ikea and what I find that looks like those is called, "Storstabbe." Could it be the same? It is 9 3/4" x 6" x 13 3/4." Looks the same.

Hi Bonnie! I have received this question before, and here’s the answer: I just have a regular 1972 colonial townhouse closet. It isn’t stuffed because (a) I donated 90% of all ready to wear clothing (b) I use thin hangers - the velvet wing kind (c) I rotate my clothes out seasonally. We have a nifty IKEA king bed that opens up and has storage under the mattress. Summer clothes are there now, and if this cold ever retreats, winter clothes will be there soon. Now my shoes?? Thanks so much for your tour. I have a Brother SE400, and from my understanding, one is to place only thread that winds in a zig-zag pattern, like Gutterman, on the thread holder that goes sideways, and regular thread that winds around and around, on the up and down thread holder (by the bobbin winder). There should be an extra attachment for that. (Good and helpful idea about the emory board filing off rough edges)

It helps to give cleared mental space as well, which also helps rev me up for the next garment-to-be. Now fabric...hmmm...that seems to be busting out all over.😱I need a 5th glass tower but I won’t buy one. That would just aid and abet my fabric habit. Oh I just love old sewing machines, Mary. Not quite as old as treadle style, but 50’s, 60’s, 70’s I adore. You’re a fellow Dining Room Seamstress, huzzah!🥂There are a lot of us! Thank you for watching my video and leaving such a lovely comment.😄

If I had a beautiful fabric stash as you do. I would like to keep it on show behind glass as well. You have a lovely sewing studio. 😘

Hi! I don't even sew - would love to but I think I broke my new sewing machine that I used only once - anyway I watch Joy Bernhardt because she tickles me to watch - I just love her enthusiasm and personality and she told her viewers to come check you out - she said many nice things about you but what got me here was her saying that if we like her personality we will love yours and I believe I do! So, I subscribed and hit the bell, looking forward to watching you Viv! Your place is lovely by the way and I love how you do things just because it makes you happy!!

Hi Patricia, I’m so sorry about your new sewing machine. That’s the worst! You have my condolences. Welcome! So happy you decided to come over and see what’s what. Joy is a sparkler, isn’t she?!😄 I am fairly new and finding the sewing community to be a lot of fun here at KZbin. Hope to see you again soon!

Loved the tour! I totally agree about the clear space to the left of the sewing machine. I like to start all of my projects with a clear space- I find objects lying around to be too distracting. I think that when my OCD has to battle with my ADD that it is B.A.D. Thanks for sharing.

Ha, the rhyming at the end is great. But not so great is ADD and OCD.🌸I am totally down with the clear space. I will literally get cranky and mutter under my breath if I’ve left a bunch of stuff to the left and it all starts falling to the floor and getting tangled up in the garment! But people can easily sew with a full table, my hat is off! Thanks for taking the tour, so glad you enjoyed it Charlene!😄👍

Love your sewing room tour. I really liked the way your store your patterns. Love your organization-fabric, ironing station. I am picky about my sewing table too! One question..where do you store the M&M's? Lol. Thank you for sharing your private space with us.

I can’t bring those dang M&Ms into the house anymore if I want to fit into a single party dress, Mary. Thanks for your great feedback on “the space,” and I love hearing that you’re picky about your sewing table too. I see people of course who sew with all sorts of things to the left of their machine, and I marvel. Everyone is so different but there’s one thing that’s the same for all of us: our love of sewing!!!

Thank you, sweet Diann!💕You are too kind. And yes, knowing that we all love the same thing is a good feeling. Friends and family can only understand so much, but our sewing buddies get it!!👍 I did put the pattern box info in the description box, can’t believe I forgot it at first. Thank you for the happy vacation wishes too! Wheee, can’t wait!🎉🎊

Vivmom, thank you for sharing your lovely sewing space. Even tho' there's a lot going on, it is a very serene space. Everything's in order. You've given me something to think about with the glass towers. It would be so much easier than taking fabric out of a cabinet to see what's there. I very much like that look, and yours makes a very nice statement! Have a great trip!

Thank you, Francine! It’s a lot of color isn’t it?! I’m a color nut so I always want more color.😄 The towers serve as decoration for the room as well as being functional. I wanted to incorporate my fabric right into the design of the space because (a) I love fabric and (b) I don’t have a lot of space. Oh, did I mention I love fabric?!👍💕

Slowly going thru all of your videos I am a new subscriber. Just love how down to earth you are! Your sewing room is very inspirational as I am trying to down size. Approaching retirement and panicking as to how to organize and purge so that I can fit into a smaller space without feeling cramped. What do you do with fabric that you purchased but found that you did not like? I used to have a dress business and most of my fabrics are not what I would have chosen but, I keep them because my tastes may change over time or someone might request something that might fit this fabric. I have too much of this but feel that I have too much invested. It brings me down to look at because I feel overwhelmed to have it in view but, if I pack it up, I’ll forget about it. Out of sight, out of mind! Last, do you have a video that explains content and fabric weight for knit tops and suggestions on where to buy? I like some of your sleeveless or short sleeve tops, even the one you have on but, I can’t find anything. It is either too lightweight and see thru or too heavy. Thanks!

Thanks Viv for the lovely tour of your home and seeing area. I shop at Lidl we have a new store very near by. You are super organized and that is why you get so much done. I love those towers of fabric too, what a joyous site 😍 Have a wonderful break, l wonder if you will accidentally find a fabric and store on your travels 😁

Hi Sarah👋- what a brilliant idea! Find a fabric store on our travels!😄Actually I’ve googled fabric stores in Naples and mostly home decor comes up. There is a Joann and I have definitely dashed there for a pattern sale or two. Their Joann is so much nicer than mine, but a landfill would be nicer than mine. Thanks for all these lovely compliments!🌸💕

Oh my! I'm still catching up on past videos and I can't believe you accomplish all your makes from your dining room! I would have thought you had some fab dedicated space. I am in awe because your space is so well thought out and lends itself so well to the sheer quantity of what you sew. Well done Viv! It's wonderful. The whole thing is wonderful because I like to be part of the goings on too but have never figured out how to cram all the necessities into the living space for functionality yet keep it neat. Those glass towers are phenomenal and beautifully display your fabric stash. 👍👍👍🌷. A www...still watching...and, I had to edit to say...I fully understand what you mean by King Cat. Mine was Harrison (my daughter named him). I just called him "Bud". He was a beautiful black Persian and he was such a love. 💙

2L8, your post has MADE MY DAY!!! So generous and uplifting! Thanks so much. I dream of a big studio with a “wall of fabric,” and when I said that to my husband, he replied, “you already have one!” (Clearly he doesn’t get it.😂) I’m sorry Harrison is gone but you know you’ll see him again. They give us so much, I swear animals are holy. (Except for Trix. He’s just a jerk.) Thanks again for your support and enthusiasm. xo
