Just got a second hand vintage so and it sounds fine. Had an epi too. Sounded fine. My sons gibbo sg sounds good too! I would gig any of them. Put your balls into what you are playing and nobody will give a frig what guitar or what pickups you have!

Its nice to see someone playing ac/dc with more of a clean setting.So many times I see people play it with heavy overdrive or even distortion which really destroys the tone
@Ledzepfan88
@Ledzepfan88 Жыл бұрын
Someone made a brilliant video, acdc actually does play on the clean channel. Volume cranked until the amp clips naturally. Control the picking hand. Think of you shook me all night long, rock and roll ain't noise pollution. For those about to rock. No pedals no nothing just dynamics

Hey Phil i just realised i didnt comment on this vid.Excellent comparison and im really pleased how the vintage stood up for its self .Ive read your comments and agree the Gibson has got subtle nuances which the other two hasnt not saying they dont sound great but the vibrato and sustain is definately better. My ears must be strange but I can discern between each of these SGs ,I am using high quality earphones .I have been a Gibson SG fan for years and had many,Specials ,Standards and Custom .However whilst I accept the comment re build quality soundwise the Vintage is the best and that is a major shock! Loved the playing ,great demo Thanks.

Thank you for this - just what I've been looking for. Can't afford a Gibson SG, but I'd like to get as close to the AC/DC sound as possible, as soon as possible!!!

I think the vs6 had a much darker tone and less clarity from the strings. I feel a pickup swap would solve that issue. There was less between the Epiphone and Gibson, definitely clearer and more articulate. I'd say the Gibson SG was my favourite. It would be interesting how the Vintage would sound with better pickups though.
@yoshio1985

+mutley365 I agree. I think the fact that the VS6 had Hybrid slinkys strings and the other two had slinky 9's kinda made some difference too.

I love vintages. Got a v100 last year, brilliant guitar. Epiphones are cool too but i like vintages because not many people have them and everyone seems to own an epiphone now. Fitting some seymour duncans into my v100 soon aswell as getting another one.

I know this is now 10 years old but thanks for sharing a great comparison video. I was really suprised by just how similar in capability these 3 guitars were, they all had great tone both clean and overdriven to distortion so hard to judge just on sound/tone alone. I would expect the build quality of the Gibson to be leagues ahead, lets face it they cost a lot more. From what I've heard the Vintage is a good base to carry out some hardware upgrades and fretware improvements on so good build quality is definitely achievable. I don't know much about the Epiphone SG other than you make it sound very good to me so surely another good candidate for upgrading. Apparently (according to other KZbin reviews) the Westfield SG is another worthy competitor too. Thanks again for the review and very nice playing. Sorry I couldn't pick an outright winner here, they all sounded good. Best wishes..

I feel the same. You make a good point, I also have the Epiphone (Stock Pickups). I still prefer the Epiphone with Stock to the Gibsons that are on that Epiphone. Basically: 1. Epiphone with Stock 2. Vintage with Wilkinson 3. Gibson 4. Epiphone with Gibsons

Testing different brands from a particular model with musical references (like AC/DC indeed to SGs) is a far better idea than someone's displaying metal & jazz chops . To me, i can hear more SG's true convincing tone from you than that crazy hyperactive screamer Phil X

Thanks for this, really informative! They were all close but a Gibson is a Gibson. I can see how easier it was for you to play it, very controled, you looked happy. Vintage was really warm, Epi was ok...planning to buy an Epi because it's cheap what do you think of the hardware? How does the feel of playing it compare to the Gibson?

the wine red guitar has mini humbuckers, which are kinda thinner sounding (imagine halfway between a strat and a les paul - but not that easy to describe) if you're after a thick rock sound, the v100 tobacco burst is the one.

VS6 all the way man. i've played a Gibson and yeah they're gr8 but too pricey. The Epi i find a bit too overpowering whereas the VS6 has the right tonal range. it aint too much when you flick it into the middle, it aint too sharp on treble, and its got just enough punchiness for rhythym

@DerTreckie Well...in really think that In sound all is in our heads, really guys, is very very hard to find differences. Another aspect completely different is the playability, in the gibson is REALLY more confortable than the Epi?? I mean, is has sense the extra price? I don't know if i have to buy new pickups or buy a sg special :/

Change the pick-ups in the Vintage and it's as good as the Gibson IMO... You can't beat Vintage for the price! I like Wilkinson pick-ups for some stuff but swap the pick-ups and you're onto a winner. The hardware on these is fine :) I bet you could pick one of these guitars up for £100 on eBay UK :D

VERY different prices in the US. They start on Reverb for $449 and most go in the $600 range. Might as well spend a few hundred more and get a new Gibson or a couple of hundred less and grab the top end Epi new. I've seen the ads on a few places across the pond and, yes, they can be snagged nice and cheap so grab away. Gumtree has one including case and strap for 95 pounds as we speak.

I was wondering if you could comment on each of the three guitar's ability to stay in tune? Were they all about the same or were there noticeable differences from your point of view. People always say SGs are finicky and often require frequent tuning especially when played hard. Just curious if one stayed in tune better than the others?

The VS6 is a fantastic guitar; i bought one 7 years ago, just before they used Wilkinson pickups. The newer ones are good for the pickups and mother of pearl inlays, but mine has a slightly thicker body / neck profile which i Iike. What lets down many low to mid price guitars are the electrics and thin shitty strings. I've said this a hundred times; get some decent pickups fitted and some decent 11gauge strings. It'll sound 10 times better and still only a fraction of a real sg.
