Shadow Work for beginners | Black Swan

Shadow work is the conscious process of reclaiming the things we’ve rejected in ourselves. In this video we explore the basics of Carl Jung's shadow archetype through the 2010 film Black Swan, by Darren Aronofsky.
According to the Swiss Psychologist Carl Jung, the shadow represents the unconscious parts of our personality that we don't acknowledge or accept, and includes negative traits such as anger, jealousy, and aggression. But it also contains enormous positive potential and many remarkable gifts that we’ve left behind in our childhood.

Personally, i've found shadow work to be incredibly liberating and transformative, and at the end of the day at least for me, not all that scary. I always thought Nina was fighting as the white swan, resisting the black swan as a trope that society tells her it's cool to be. It's not cool to stay the sweet virginal girl child. But there are moments where I feel like Nina wants to stay the white swan. She wants to find solid ground with her true self as the good girl. I always thought her defeat of the black swan at the end was her succeeding in that. Her triumph in the final scene was as the white swan, finally at peace knowing she had the goods to dance both parts. Maybe I just relate. There's rage in the white swan too.

Your art is a mirror to art that needs more mirrors. The human mind and the human experience is so fascinating and in many ways beautiful in both in its light and dark sides, but especially in its fusion. They call it the "golden hour" and when a human being experiences it like Nina in the movie does by the end its a transformative experience, even though it can be very painful to experience it in the moment. I've been spending months growing and in a way trying to synthesize the world within and a tangible map outside to share and hopefully guide others though a state of change. Another fantastic video. Thank you for breaking down the shadow & light personas in the movie. Makes me want to rewatch the movie. One form of shadow work that has been successful for me is to feel the adverse energy in my body. I may or may not be able to associate it with something in my life or my family lineage. I put on low resonate, bass music (no lyrics) and dance as though I am fighting and dancing with the shadow. I stop when I feel the energy has moved out of me. I then have more insights into what that shadow aspect was. It may have served me in another lifetime to survive, but I no longer need that state of begin. I say thank you and good bye to it! 🦢

Hey Elson - I've really learned a lot from watching your previous videos, but I have to say that this one is probably one of the most beautifully written and thematically deep, even compared to the others on your channel. The concept of the shadow vs. the ego is one that I definitely was not familiar with before, and the concepts you discussed in this video are both extremely complex and also important; I will have to spend some serious time contemplating the material from this video more later haha. I wonder where you think the higher self and soul fit in compared to the shadow and ego, in terms of what makes up someone's personality? After finishing the vid, my immediate thought was that higher spiritual states and enlightenment probably come when the ego and shadow are in harmonious balance, and both are subordinated to the higher self. You really presented a lot to contemplate in this one bro, awesome job and keep it up my friend!

I really enjoyed this abd learned from it. I'm starting to be interested in the work if Carl Jung - his theories simply make more sense to me. Its like he's explaining things i could never fully articulate myself. I recently realised a shadow aspect of myself which was projecting onto others and I'm now actively working on it. However, I was a bit distressed about how to know what is a shadow side aspect trying to come forth and what isn't. So your explanation about what aspect of someone makes you wznt to be better as opposed to something that triggers you emotionally. That is a fantastic way to differentiate between the two. This channel is superbly fascinating, and ahead of the curve in the self awareness of consciousness movement. Im an astrologer that focuses on shadow work through specific planetary placements that tackles the shadow aspects of our psyche. Black Lilith Moon placements is a big one that shows what desires we repudiate from expressing in our lives.

Perhaps that's why I've been devouring astrology & it's aspects. I'm a Libra/Aries/Capricon (Asc.) and I'm especially drawn to Lilith and its role in my chart (Lilith in MC Scorpio 10th house) as well as Chiron (in Aries 3rd House). I'm currently going through an intense Dark Night. And with the above factors plus my moon opposite Pluto, it's created a sh*tstorm affecting all the major areas of my psyche & my lifepath. No wonder I'm having such a hard time! Perhaps I was led to this video and subsequently to your comment in order to urge me to keep digging for clarity. I'm on the right track. In that sense, I truly thank you. I wish I had the funds to have a knowledgeable astrologer like you on the permanent payroll.

I like this video but find it hard to separate between when I am conforming to other people and situations or being what I believe is my true self, both good and bad. Some times it feels like I am true to myself but it takes very little resistance from surrounding people and situations before I give in and act and say what is acceptable. Trusting my own judgement is hard and I am working on it. Thanks for the inspiration Modern Intuitionist. (Reading some of Carl Jung´s work lately.)

After some intense months of being annoyed by loud, brute, coarse people that I seemed to meet just everywhere I went, the following happened : I had left my umbrella in the post office and when I turned back to get it, they were already closed -though still there and we could see each other through the glass doors - So I knocked ( kind of politely) and pointed to the umbrella which I could see sitting right there.. They saw me too but did not budge an inch - This went on for a while , me gesturing and waving and they simply ignoring me - when suddenly a big broad woman appeared and started to bang her fists fiercely ( and dagerously) agaist the glass , screaming at the top of her lungs "THIS WOMAN ( pointing at me omg🥴) WANTS THAT UMBRELLA !!!! GIVE THE UMBRELLA !!! THE UMBRELLA - NOW !!! GIVE IT !!! THE UMBRELLA, THE UMBRELLA, THE UMBRELLA !!! ...." bang, bang, bang, bang.... - What can I say ? - Yes , she was loud and coarse and obnoxious - but she got me the umbrella 🦢👻 -Lesson learned, I hope... But at least heart opened a little bit..

When I was a kid I loved to sing and I wasn't too bad at it (according to our school arts director). I wished I could play a musical instrument (which was a no no because my mother was afraid that it might distract me from my studies). I loved airplanes and still do, but my parents wanted me to become a physician. In college I became interested in Economics and Social Sciences, but the plan was still for mr to becomec a physician. Finally, I experienced a major breakdown (panick attacks, severe depression... the works). I had to stay home for a year recuperating. Now I'm a pharmacist by default and I hate it and I'm past middle age. So now what do you say to a monumental failure like myself? Go back and learn a musical instrument? Go back to college and study social science? Go back and learn flying? I love these videos but I think they make things sound easier and more attainable than in real life.

Hello Jayb. First I would say you are absolutely not a failure, and I believe your experience is not uncommon. Becoming a pharmacist is no easy feat and requires a high degree of discipline and focus, which will only serve you in the pursuit of any goal you might have. Unfortunately, our society is one that tends to give undue attention to instances of 'early success' stories where people achieve things when they're extraordinarily young, which I would agree is unrealistic. But there are also many examples of 'late bloomers' who took longer to discover/develop their gifts and passions, sometimes in middle age or later. It's possible. It's not easy to follow your bliss. It's challenging, frustrating, and anxiety provoking, but it's also the adventure of a lifetime. I intend to do a video on late bloomers at some point in the future. Until then, I'll only say this: You are a unique combination of inclinations, interests, and passions that no one else has. This specific combination that makes up who you are has never occurred before, and will never occur again. You are asking the right questions. Only you can answer them. If you experiment and listen to your intuition, life will move you towards the answers.
