Nice video. Getting to know people really works. I did this in order to get into grad school for something else. I didn't finish, but it was good practice! Now, I'm applying to physical therapy aide jobs to see how I like PT. If I like it, I will apply to PT schools.

Wow, I feel so old. When I applied to (and was accepted by) USC 20 years ago, PT school was fairly easy to get into. I think I had a 3.5 overall and 3.3 science. Top school in the country. So much competition these days!

My preceptor said the exact same thing back then she was one of the last people to obtain the Masters degree in PT before it was abolished. Nowadays she says there’s way to much emphasis on money and extra BS.

Hey loved the video & loved the advice! You guys are awesome. Hey so what would you consider a low gpa in general for PT school?
@ShearnKunal

I think a low GPA would be anything lower than a 3.1-3.2, we only say that because your choice of school becomes very limited the lower your GPA!

So happy I found this channel, I am currently a student at CSUSB majoring in Kinesiology Allied Health. My GPA is a 3.5 (chemistry is killing me) I thrive to become a PT. I was wondering what school you guys are attending? Because the majority of schools in CA have an average of 3.7 GPA acceptance.

Hey Antonio!! Thank you so much for the support! We really appreciate it! hahha niceee I went to CSUSB for my undergrad and Kunal went to UCR for his. Hi guys! Thanks so much for sharing your tips and helping us all out with the mission or struggle for some of us! I have a low overall undergrad GPA but my pre req GPA is at a 3.8. I also went to masters for an assistantship and due to working full time while in masters I ended up with a 3.0. I took a year off to work in the fitness realm and now am applying to PT schools. In your honest opinion, is a masters and a better Pre requisite GPA and experience enough to compensate for my lower GPA and descent GRE scores? I know this is a loaded question but I could definitely use some advice!
@delaseoul
@delaseoul 5 жыл бұрын
I think that working full-time and completing your masters with a 3.0 is an impressive accomplishment! With that being said, I do believe that it is enough to compensate for a lower cumulative GPA. When I re-applied to school, I focused on improving my pre-requisites and acquiring relevant experiences, which ultimately led me to getting into the school of my choice the second time around! Hope this helps

I am one of those low GPA (3.0) students. I got creative by layering on the experience side of things. I work in a hands on injury management setting and interned at multiple different PT settings. Basically, experience, recommendations, and a killer GRE score overcompensate for my GPA.

1. You have low GPA? Welll... what is your definition of “low”..??? 😅 2. Yeah, I go by that motto too.. “It’s not about what you know, but who you know.” 😁 3. One of the reasons why I applied at this school, no GRE required... 😅

Would taking pre reqs at a community college be a disadvantage to an application? Or does it really not matter where you take the required classes?
@pamelag3879

Andrea Cervantes I do not believe it matters as long as you properly fulfill the school’s pre requisites.

Hey guys I have an overall GPA of 2.5. I have probably over 160 credits because I switched around majors so much. Is there any way I can become a DPT eventually? What would be the fist steps? I don't want to waste money retaking classes for over 4 years. Would getting a PTA and working in that area then retaking classes a better solution? Or should I just give up and pursue something else?
@ShearnKunal
@ShearnKunal 5 жыл бұрын
TIMMIAY Yes! There’s always a way to become a DPT if you put in the time and effort to it. Your first step would be talking to the advisor of the school you’re trying to apply to and ask them what are the classes you’ll need to take/retake. If they’re not as helpful then ask your school’s advisor the same question, they should be able to help but preferably the school you’re trying to get into. Then go from there. Being a PTA is a great route if you really want to get some hands on right away and see how physical therapy is like but if your goal is DPT then you should pursue it right away. You could also look into a PTaide jobs where you won’t need much schooling but thats to rack up your obbservation hours that you’ll need to complete eventually. Don’t limit yourself cuz there are so many possibilities out there! Hope this helps:)

What Pre-req gpa should we have for PT School and does it actually define whether we get into PT school or not? If that is the case it kind of discredits the hard work put into other(sometimes pointless) classes.
@ShearnKunal
@ShearnKunal 5 жыл бұрын
Ariel Echeverria great question Ariel! Yeah so unfortunately pre-reqs gpa does matter but they also look at your gpa as two parts. Your science classes (biology, chemistry etc) and your non science classes(english, history etc) so all your classes do matter but depends on the school you’re applying to it can vary what classes they count or don’t count. The best way is to talk to their advisors:)

is the cumulative GPA based off of the GPA from the prereq courses or from a bachelors cumulative gpa?
@ShearnKunal
@ShearnKunal 5 жыл бұрын
Michelle Jones hey! So they look at your prereq courses if you’re trying to head into a program that doesn’t require a bachelors but they’ll look at your bachelors cumulative gpa if you’re applying with a BS. It kinda depends on what school you apply to:) hope this helps!

Where can I get PT observation hours? Do I just walk into a clinic and ask? Lol

You can do that. I drove to a couple of clinics in my area and asked if they are willing to accept students for observation hours. It worked for me. You can also email physical therapists and ask, but I feel like going to clinic will give a quick response.

hmm, don't really have an answer to this because there isn't a correct answer. It would definitely depend on what your interests are and what you are good at. One person may struggle with being a bio major whereas another may find it easy because of their strengths. If you are looking for easy major, major in wherever your strength lies!

Hello just stumbled upon this video. And I am currently attempting to raise my GPA to get into PT school. Is it true that the only way to be competitive is to have a 3.4-3.5 to get into school? I've called and asked some schools and they've told me they've taken students with GPA's around a 3.0. That kind of crushed my hopes hearing that I'd need a 3.5 to get in =|
@ShearnKunal
@ShearnKunal 6 жыл бұрын
seeenj getting accepted with a 3.0 is definitely doable, our purpose was to say that if you have a low gpa you just have to get creative with how you go about doing things. Don’t be discouraged! It is most definitely possible! 😊 feel free to get in touch with us if you need anything! 😃

@ShearnKunal
@ShearnKunal 6 жыл бұрын
Hunter Storm Kunal TAs for anatomy just once a week but that’s about it. Difficult to maintain a good balance between a job and school BUT DEFINITELY NOT IMPOSSIBLE. Best advice would be to get a job at the school somewhere because they’ll understand the life of a student and work with your schedule. Time management and you’ll be set bro 🤙🏾 And yea it’s kind of difficult to get a job with a kine or bio unless you look into teaching high school or middle school. Otherwise it’s best to use that degree to get into a program with more speciality. Got any more questions, let us know man
@ShearnKunal
@ShearnKunal 6 жыл бұрын
Hunter Storm we don’t actually have jobs cuz PT is a job in itself! It’s pretty hard to work while going to PT school just because the school load is really heavy. But, we do have classmates that work outside in the busy schedule which till today we still can’t fathom. Other students just find jobs in school that are easy to cope. If you’re trying to work while going into pt school we would highly suggest working at or even volunteering at a PT clinic so that you’ll have one foot in the door!
