Our family was very anti disposal when I was a kid, because my mom and dad didn't grow up with money. To them, one use items were not practical. We had nice dishes for the holiday meals, but it was also only the four of us instead of a massive party. Little did they know, they were imparting sustainable practices onto me. Thanks ma!!

Earth hero saved me during the workplace secret santa this year! We have to make a list of things we want and pretty much everyone just puts some garbage from Amazon on their list. I was able to look through earth hero, find about a million different things I didn't even know I wanted and I was glad that I knew it was all honestly sustainable. Not only will I probably be getting something that isn't horrible for the planet, but I also got a chance to let someone else know about it's existence. I hope I can strike up a conversation about it when we do gift exchange

We’ve used the same ornaments and decorations since I was a baby, it’s more sentimental imo. A good half of them were made by someone in our family, and the other half were from antique stores, or artisans from back home.

The fact that any family event of less than like 30 people would use disposable dishes is insane to me. My grandparents all lived through the depression and as a result disposable wasn’t really a thing for me growing up. We used real dishes at Christmas and washed all the resultant dishes...w/o a dishwasher. My mom and sister are the same. Holidays are an excuse to use nice dishes and have a beautiful table.

It's just never occurred to me to use disposables for holiday season entertaining 🤯. We buy a real tree from a Xmas tree farm local to us and decorate mostly with paperchains made from last year's wrapping, and strings of popcorn. We also have a homemade gold paper angel on top of the tree (8 yrs old) and a string of lights that are 12 years old. The tinsel is 35 years old. At least I'm getting good use out of them😉

You just have to wash it and resend. We still like to cook cakes and bring them in ceramic or metal tins. And if we are lucky enough we have friends who have some sort of musical instrument 😉 but things are changig in here to. I still love ceramic dishes and glasses. 😍I really love your videos

You look extra gorgeous today! That is your color! I LOVE my stasher bags! I actually can’t stand carrying a tiffin or Tupperware sometimes, so I just bring a stashed bag! You can just as easily put your food leftovers into a stasher bag the same way you would use a container! And it’s my more lightweight and compact to carry around! When I was younger my family always sent home leftovers in ziplocks because no one wanted their Tupperware to never come back lol so now I just use my stasher bag the same way 👌🏼😂

I grew up thinking it was kind of tacky to use disposables at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Even if we were using paper plates a lot at the time, we used fancy dishes on the holidays to make it special. Also if you're having a real feast paper plates are so floppy, you need that good ceramic to hold all that food! lol

Hey! I love your videos! I've been having a debate with a friend recently and we can't figure this one out, so maybe you can help: what's more sustainable - ordering online or buying in a store? So far it's been a purely theoretical debate, so for the sake of simplifying things we're disregarding pollution that comes from manufacturing stuff since we figured that if you're deciding between purchasing the same item online or in store that part of it is the same. Now, the thing is: if you're ordering online it's obvious the item has to be shipped to you, so there's shipping between logistic centers and then the delivery person's car. Now, if you buy in the store you cut out the delivery person's car but on the other hand you have to somehow get to the store, so you're the one causing the pollution with your own car. If 5 people decide to buy an item it seems to me it would be less harmful for all of them to buy online, since 1 delivery person=1 car, so less pollution than when you have 5 different cars going to the store (or am I wrong?). But then, there's the issue of the packaging the item comes in, the amount of driving around the delivery person has to do etc., so my friend and I feel like we can't judge it on our own. Obviously, it would be the best to buy from companies that are eco-friendly all the way through, but there are limitations to that - there are items you can't buy that way and in general it's very difficult where we are (we're not from the US and zero waste etc. only started surfacing here - the only "category" you could pretty easily get here is skincare, so if you're buying eg. electronics you're pretty much stuck to "traditional" companies). Sorry if all this sounds uneducated - like I said, planet-friendly lifestyle is just surfacing here, so I'm new to all of this, but I'm trying my best! Hugs from Poland

I'm really proud of how I've done presents this year. For my family I've only bought from independent artists/sellers in Etsy who are based in the UK. I live in Sweden but the people I'm sending then to still live in the UK. And then for my partner's family, who live here in Sweden, I've saved jars for a few months and knitted some cute festive sleeves for them (in place of wrapping paper) and last night I spend the eve making baked goods to go in the jars. The only thing I didn't know how to solve was the double sided tape for the labels for the jar (needed so they know the ingredients etc) but next year I will find a solution for this too 😎😎

Hey Shelby! I’m still new to this zero/low-waste scene and I have been following you for a while. Not sure if someone already said this but (Love your videos btw) one thing I wanted to mention that my husband and I decided to do was to grow our own tree. As in buying a festive tree and keeping it alive to decorate with naturally made things that you can DIY. You can get dwarf ones (naturally smaller firs and such) and keep them inside in a plant pot and use the trimmings from maintaining them for other decorations. Also not trying to do any promoting but Fairly Local Vegan has some amazing few videos for how they decorate for the holidays using compostable food items.

My family uses disposable cups/cutlery and flatware year round...like every single day. Its insane. And the plates are like styrofoam bc "they are cheaper" its so aggravating. I always grab regular dishes from my moms cabinets and wash them when I'm done. They actually tease me and say I'm too good for paper plates 🙄 I adore my To Go Ware tiffin. This year we got a tiny baby tree in a pot, we are going to watch it grow over the years and then plant it outside when it gets too big. All of our other decor items are thrifted or homemade. We wrap with Kraft paper. Scarves or my kids have "Santa sacks" I feel really good about this holiday season. I was also able to get tons of old holiday themed tins to put cookies or peanut butter balls in to gift!!

People always ask me why I use the regular dishes and forks and glasses when I have a play date. Well bc 1) it's cheaper, 2) I'm running the dishwasher anyway, 3) taking out the garbage is a pain the neck and paper plates take up way too much space, 4) I don't want to shop and haul this stuff home and store it, and 5) because why would I throw all that in our overfull landfills when all of the above suggests we just use what we use every day? The other thing is that *shocker* disposable utensils (even the compostable ones) are dishwasher safe. My 4 year old really likes including them in her rotation (and you don't need to buy these ever to collect a mountain of them) so I just throw them in the dishwasher and reuse them. I also always have them in my car and diaper bag - no fancy silverware roll to get left behind or for someone to swipe. If they get left behind or are to messy to bring home I try not to feel too guilty bc they've been used repeatedly already and if they're not too messy, I bring them home and they go through the dishwasher again. However, I do become a bit of a hoarder bc it's hard to refuse them all over the place, and if you're given a bundle of plasticware say on the airplane, I always wind up bringing the extra unused ones with me and not throwing them out (see what I mean about not buying it bc it's hard to refuse it all?). It's definitely not perfect, but still better than constantly tossing single use plastics. Btw Shelbizleee, definitely give glass jars to kids (not babies) - jars are so much sturdier than regular glasses! My training glass for my kids is a small jam jar I used for the same in my childhood.

I'm from Ukraine. We are well known for overpreparing😌. But now I live in Germany. And here I learned to organise fondue and raclette parties. You can make vegan version as well. Most of leftovers can be freezed easily and be used later. No food thrown out

Alternatively, MAKE YOUR OWN WRAPPING PAPER!!! I swear its so much fun and its very personal to give gifts wrapped in beautiful paper you have decorated yourself, the recipients will be more considerate of it, and if they open it gently you can reuse the paper over and over! Otherwise it should be recyclable. My favourite ways of decorating is making my own stamps from corks! I once did a lot of wedding bartending and I'd always pocket the corks instead of throwing them out. I did a design on the top and then with a scalpel knife I'd cut/carve out the design. I've made stars, snowflakes, hearts, christmas trees, mushrooms, rain clouds, and they look so cute and rustic printed on leftover newspaper, butchers paper (from my art school), old unimportant documents, and I generally hoard paper scraps so I never have the need to go buy some. Also at my school, the textiles department have bags full of fabric scraps which come in such a variety of colours and patterns and textures, all in strange sizes and lengths. I took home some of these scraps and now use really long fabric scraps as ribbons, or if there are bigger scraps I use them as wrapping. There is always plenty of 'waste' that is perfectly reusable and beautiful when upcycled, given new life, and used creatively. Wanted to share to inspire some people! Obviously it's not TOTALLY waste free but these things are reusable and/or recyclable, and you're already taking something that would have gone to landfill and giving it a new and beautiful purpose.

I have never heard of using disposables for big family gatherings. It looks cheap and unfriendly too.

My friends definitely use disposable stuff for their gatherings. But my family has mostly used reusable. Especially my parents. Its the few times we get to use the "nice" plate and glasses.

We made too much food for Christmas Dinner this year (UK, so Turkey, veg, roast potatoes and cauliflower cheese) this year we have a lot of leftovers, the day after Christmas we had bubble and squeek (mash all the leftover veg together and fry it) and leftover turkey with it. The day after boil the turkey carcass down and make soup. Nothing left apart from things that aren't edible, that can be compasted, but I haven't started this yet. Our local council collects food waste to be composted, but I hope to start doing it myself at some point in the new year :)

Recently married. My side of the family uses "reuseables" (honestly, we just use plates, silverware, and cups calling those reuseables is weird to me). My husband's side depends on the events and their level of effort. Sometimes we use "reuseables" and sometimes we use single use.

My family always busts out the fanciest china dishes and nice glasses and uses those to make the holiday feel more special. Then the kids are on dish duty while the adults socialize

Telephone Pictionary was actually sold as a boardgame called "Telestrations". I think it's a very clever name. That Fishnet Jenga got me EXTRA excited.

Yes! My friend has the game set, which comes pretty handy as we play often. Because it's laminated paper + dry-erase marker they can be erased and reused, which is very nice. Obviously the pens do run out, but once they do you can change them for eco-friendly refillable ones. One could also make a DIY version with chalk paint, so that chalk can be used to draw :)

is there some way that recycling facilities tell apart the recyclable versions of things that normally are not recyclable (like the gift wrap)? I worry that they'll see gift wrap, assume it's not recyclable and then the whole load will be considered contaminated and get sent to landfill

Love this video idea so much! Amazing. Also: way to go Jenga holy cow that’s awesome. My family ALWAYS uses reusables and everyone got so into wax wraps in the last few years ! One thing our family does for leftovers is put them in the dish we brought our contribution in to take them home. 😁

Do you have any advice on what to say when people ask what you want for the holiday? I usually ask for things that I need, but I end up with blankets and clothes that I don't need and it feels wasteful. I don't want to be ungrateful, but I also really worry about the impact of the gifts I am being given. Same for other holidays and occasions where people bring gifts.

Great video! Really thoughtful and thorough. I was wondering if you had the recipe for homemade glue available anywhere or how this worked out for you? Interested if this could work as a replacement for white glue/Elmer’s or if you have a recipe. Asking as a student teacher! Thanks for the info 🌻

My history high school teacher was the first person to show me eco living. He would get stares and people thought he was a hippy. He would drink out of glass jars every single day in front of his high school kids and never told us why till the last day of school 😂

Can you do a video about composting, but in an apartment. I know they have programs where people come and pick it up, but I am student and paying the fee each month is too much for me at the moment. Do you have any alternative options for this?

I never heard of home made glue before, love this channel for learning new things. I like the idea of using hessian sacks or hard cardboard or wooden boxes for Presents that you can take back off your family or they can reuse them too.

In Germany, disposables aren‘t a thing at private parties. You just use the dishes that are in the house. But at festivals there are a lot of disposables. I always carry two small forks and teaspoons for me and my husband to at least reduce disposable cuttley. At the christmas market in Frankfurt I saw a food company where you could lend real plates and cuttlery and give it back when you‘re finished. So i guess it starts to change. :)
