Great video. Every 20 seconds was a nice bit of knowledge and a pearl of wisdom. Somebody who has not tried to upgrade their groupset or shifters or gears recently may not know HOW good these nuggets of wisdom are ... but as someone who only 6 months ahead of you on this journey i want affirm HOW good your pointers are in this video. You touch on SO many important points.

Thank you so much! That’s really nice of you to say! Yeah, that’s a good point, hopefully it will be useful to someone who is considering their first groupset. Thanks again 👍

Actually the tiagra r4700 sti shifters will work with 11 speed road mechanical rear derailleurs from Shimano, the reason being is that the pull ratio on tiagra r4700 is the same as 11 speed, I've test R5800/R6800/R7000 and R8000, also everything in the grx range will work perfectly.

I have the same bike and have been debating whether or not it was worth upgrading. This helped! Thanks!
@TheSlowworms Жыл бұрын
That’s actually a really interesting topic because there’s quite a few pros and cons. For me, I really like the frame, the components were pretty warn out and the money I spent on these components could get me another second hand bike but it would still have lesser components. I really liked the bike before but I’m still in shock about how much better it is now. It is so smooth! You can always move the components across if you want another bike later down the line. Hope that helps!

@@TheSlowworms I'm in the same boat with the wear on my bike as it's about 10 years old now haha. Yeah it seems silly to put $500 into an old bike, but on the other hand, it seems worse to write off a good frame for no real reason. I think I'll be doing the upgrades, it'd be a waste not to. Thanks again!

I have the 10 year old ultegra 4700. The components there are fairly similar as the designs get passed down through the generations. Dura Ace > Ultegra > 105 > Tiagra > Sora. So yeah, it’s a good upgrade. Tiagra is the lowest set I would recommend for a new cyclists as it’s proven technology. I even know a guy who raced competitively on Tiagra as late as 2011. It’s good tech.
@TheSlowworms3 жыл бұрын
How’s the ultegra gear holding up? Would you not recommend the Sora groupset then?

I rode 80 miles today on Tiagra. I have other bikes with higher-end stuff; but Tiagra is very, very similar. Smooth shifts, plenty of range. I really can’t tell a difference between 10-speed and 11-speed. Moreover, the one fewer gear makes tuning a bit easier. Tiagra is just great. I have no negative comments to make.
@TheSlowworms3 жыл бұрын
That’s really interesting to hear from someone who has higher end parts as well. Have you been using the Tiagra stuff for very long?

Oh so you’ve had a lot of experience with it as well. Have you had to replace anything? Are you still on the original cables? I really like “fit and forget” parts that you just have to set up once and they keep going and going

@@TheSlowworms It has been quite reliable. Yes; those are the original cables. I really haven’t heard anyone say much negative about Tiagra.

if you ever need obscure parts for stuff. SJS Cycles has been a great resource. I mentally cant understand how a company could have space for so much obscure bits and pieces. they have almost everything. tiny things to build your shifters from scratch to all the larger things. They somehow manage to get parts for a lot of the older groupsets as well. I cant speak for other brands as I mainly ride shimano but they SJS should have it. Big shout out to SJS Cycles.

Love the build. I've got the 4700 groupset on my all road/gravel bike. With the 11-32. Love it, but always thought of getting a 11-34T. Amazing tip on the GRX 11-36T. I might just splurge and get that soon.

Thanks mate! It’s so quiet as well. I don’t think you’d regret it. Especially on a gravel bike. I found that little tip out on Shimanos compatibility document. It tells you what components work together which is really handy 👍

SRAM 10 speed cassette’s are compatible with this Tiagra 4700 group. I just replaced the 9 speed triple in my Giant OCR2 with this same groupset. My 3x9 triple originally came with a 11-26 cassette and since the part of Texas where I live is very flat I chose a 11-26 10 speed cassette. The gearing is 11,12,13,14,15,17,19,21,23,26t. Perfect for flat asphalt and overpasses
@touzenjodan Жыл бұрын
It's based on the current 11-speed component, so there's no reason why the functionality can't be bad. Compared to 105, it feels like just one more speed.
@TheSlowworms Жыл бұрын
Are you saying the Tiagra is just an 11 speed version of 105?
@zhuyufan1186 Жыл бұрын
4700 FD and RD paired with a ltwoo or sensah 11 speed shimano cable pull ratio shifter is a really good budget 11 speed shifterset. I know most people don't like mix match parts, but it is possible to do this.

Hello 👋 I think the best ratio depends on how fit you are and how flat the roads are where you ride your bike. I’m not that fit and I’m surrounded by hills so I wanted to make things easy for myself. Yeah, it was really hard to get all these parts together. I literally had to buy each component from a different place 😄
