Surprisingly enough, The Black Heart characters really stuck with me over the years. I don't remember how long ago it was, but I was introduced to this game by an ol' m8 of mine back in Highschool. Something like 2012, maybe 2013. I still remember them all to this day--and they come to mind more often than you'd think. That may or may not be linked to Salty Bet, though. Shar-Makai is cool and all I agree--but the character I remember the most is Animus. I'm a bit sad it didn't get showed off very much, but what can you do. Man, this was a pretty nice watch.

The best thing about black heart is the creator went to such lengths to give the characters personality. For example: Shar-Makais are magical bio-weapons so the rapid cycle of death and consumption is justified. Animus has their own variation on midnight bliss and if two animus fight in verses they start in different forms, both spawn on the same cross and have a creepy moment when they land on each other. Also Animus only goal in story mode is to find the black heart so he can utterly destroy himself because he's too immortal to die from anything else. If the puppet guy faces of against spider girl he get all flustered. He also had his own head cut off in story mode and shows it to people as a win taunt. Finally his special move will decapitate a foe if it defeats them... unless he's fighting his own headless self, resulting in him eventually giving up and just punching the doppelganger through the chest. Spider gall is speculated to be actually just a sentient mass of spiders and will cycle through various costumes as her win animation, some of which are shout outs. Plant guy is an utter jerkass in universe and demonstrates this by qupping at his enemies. for example after drinking some red fluid he says 'What? its just tomato juice'. Stringy haired ghost girl is a shout out to movies like the grudge and the ring and in true Japanese ghost fashion will aggressively strike at the screen in rage sometimes after winning. I'd highly recommend the game and advise you to check the game TV Tropes page for more information.
