Australia has a skills shortage problem, and to combat this, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced there will be 465,000 fee-free TAFE courses. But are there enough education facilities to accommodate this? Where will these students actually study, especially here in Brisbane?
Albion is a perfect suburb to build this proposed new precinct. It's 10 minutes from the CBD, only 3 train stops from the International Airport. It's right on the North Brisbane Bikeway and is connected to many of Brisbane's major arterial road connections. There are parks, new retail and residential developments underway plus it's about to become a hub for sporting activity with the proposed Breakfast Creek Sports Centre being developed for the 2032 Olympic Games.
It's poised to become the next hot suburb in Brisbane and would make for a perfect spot for an education campus.
And the former TAB Building, an iconic brutalist structure in the heart of Albion is the perfect site for this campus. It's about to undergo refurbishment, getting a green, clean, sustainable makeover, and the site it sits on is big enough to build new buildings on when student facilities fill up the original.
Brisbane needs a new centre for education in the city, and Albion fits the bill. But what do you think?
