Accepting your inner child is actually a sign of inner maturity. I went to see Mario on my birthday bringing along my sister and her husband - and it was a fun ride. I recommend you to splurge the extra cash for 3D and DBOX seats in particular. The story was simple, but the many references kept me engaged throughout the film. The parents of today are the kids who grew up playing these games, and now wish to share their passion with the next generation. That's what's happening here. Why it is such a hit. It's a social event.

I'm from a country where English isn't the primary language, so kids movies are dubbed. I can confirm the Mario Movie "original version" in English is almost exclusively played in theatres after 8PM. "When adults go to the theatre" This helps a lot with the weirdness of an adult watching a kids movie. To the point that I went to see it with my (adult) friends and weirdness didn't even occur to me.

"Should I watch this if I'm a Mario fan - yes" - I know you're probably not all serious with that, but to pick up that point: no matter how much of a fan i am of a videogame franchise, I don't wanna see adaptations of them (unlike my teenage or twen self who craved them). They just don't work for me personally, let games be games. I'm not saying The Last Of Us is bad, I haven't even watched the show. I believe when people say it's a good show, but probably more for people who haven't played the game. Not exclusively of course, but more so. There's just certain expectations that some fans have, Joel and Ellie exist in my mind and it's just not the people I see in scenes from that show. Like I said, just my personal view.

I took my kids to see this and they were literally jumping for joy non stop all the way out to the car. One said its now his top 3 favorite movies lol. So for gentlemen with kids (or nieces or nephews or grand children or any children in your life): YES. Personally it was a 7/10 good time but I have the slight suspicion now that I wasn't the target audience.
