When I worked for XBOX I met Matt Booty in London, I explained some of our country issues we had with XBOX to him, he seemed really interested to help and told me to mail him. When I got back to the office I mailed him, he never replied.. two weeks later I had a disciplinary hearing because I mailed a VP (even though he asked me to.) Matt never bothered to even step in and admit he asked me to mail him. I was given a written warning and scolded for simply sending him an email that I was asked to send. Anyways I worked myself to the bone for XBOX and did some great stuff for them, Phil Spencer even took some of the code for something I built to replicate it in other markets (they apparently had no budget to replicate it). I left XBOX, it was a dream job for me that was ruined by egos. A lot more went on while I worked there but I don't have all day to type out my story. I feel like they don't get it, their hardware team is next level but somehow their studios simply don't understand what makes a good game. Good games do shift units thats a fact.

Good games absolutly shift console units it is shockingly absurd to suggest otherwise especially when Xbox first-party hasnt released any great games. Phil is clearly trying to make Xbox seem more vulnerable so they can buy Activision. What you've said proves to me what i already suspected which is that they only want to seem personable when in reality they are just scummy. They're willing to put money into buying studios and IP but not games themselves. Personally, I hope they give up and another competitor does what Xbox never could: make video games worth playing.

This just illustrated such a major point... that Xbox has basically given up on the console battle and will focus on GamePass+Cloud, and THAT is what the CMA has blocked. MS is saying CMA "don't understand the market" but it feels more like they understood it very well and this is more detrimental to Xbox than they let on. This was their final hand to play and CMA swiped it away.

I think the CMA also saw the Nvidia is aiming in that direction too, as GeForce Now is where their frame insertion will be more usable, and although at the moment they are not even close to Microsoft in market share with it, I think they are the only ones who can compete with them in that area.

@Ben-do1bf Жыл бұрын
@ I don't exactly agree that GeForce Now is where DLSS frame insertion will be beneficial really. Especially given how much latency is already being added with streaming which DLSS 3.0 is only going to exacerbate, and how DLSS 3.0 really starts to become truly beneficial above the 60fps Geforce Now streams at, it seems more focused for those who are actually buying cards. Regardless, whether or not Xbox and Nvidia are focusing on Cloud, and whether or not the CMA is trying to block those ambitions or not, I kind of see it as moot because as of right now its not looking like cloud is suddenly going to take over the market anytime soon. (unless everyone starts doing the cloud arms workout routine that is)

Bill Gates absolutely hated the idea of the Xbox and threw a fit when it was first pitched to him. However then people got him paranoid that Sony's real plan was to use the Playstation as a trojan horse that'd replace the PC in people's homes, running their own OS and not Windows. Microsoft's goal has never really been about winning the console space. At their core Microsoft is a software company that would rather not make any hardware.
@N7Null Жыл бұрын
We also know that Microsoft isn't interested in being involved in a space if it isn't the dominant force. You don't even have to look at Windows for that. Look at what happened to the Zune and all the different iterations of their phones.
@rna151 Жыл бұрын
Initially maybe but suggesting MS wasn't committed to the Xbox after they started it is a bit ridiculous. Heck, it was that commitment and neglect of the PC space that gave Valve the room to move in and for Steam to become the dominant force on what could/should have been MS own backyard.
@N7Null Жыл бұрын
@@rna151 Not entirely true. MS created DirectX around '94 or '95 as a way to entice developers to get ports of MS-DOS games over on Windows. Developers didn't believe in MS so MS went out of their way to contact John Carmack and convince him to allow a port of Doom 1 and 2 to be created for Windows on the condition that id would get to keep the rights to that release. Carmack agreed and Gabe Newell actually spearheaded that port before leaving in '96 to found Valve. Valve didn't create Steam until 2003 and didn't get their first 3rd party deal until 2005. When GFWL launched in ~2007, Steam only had something like 150 games for sale. GFWL was a massive failure and was eventually removed from every game that had it. I couldn't play GTAIV for the longest because of that shit. I'd argue it had less to do with Microsoft's commitment to Xbox and more to do with Microsoft's incompetence and inability to ever understand the gaming market that let Steam exist. The strategy they're using now is the same strategy they've been using for decades whether we're talking about that Doom port or we're talking about them acquiring Bungie and preventing Halo from being released on Macintosh computers at the turn of the century.
@rna151 Жыл бұрын
@@N7Null Going off on a bit of a tangent here but it wasn't "Developers didn't believe in Windows so they kept making games for DOS", it was DOS allowed games to access hardware directly while in Windows mode software ran a lot slower. Hence DirectX was pitched as a solution to that problem (though it wouldn't really be worth a damn till DX5/6 came around). But yes, it was absolutely about MS' commitment to XBox. They weren't willing to get out of the picture entirely and let say OpenGL become the dominant graphics technology on their platform but given the choice of selling you a game on XBox or PC they'd have much preferred you buy the game on XBox because they got software licensing fees on Xbox. This is the reason why they initially cancelled Alan Wake for PC (the legendary "we looked at it and realized some games just play better on the couch" quote), why Halo and Gears stopped coming out on PC, why GFWL was such a half-baked mess it actually subtracted value from the games it was included in... Look at it this way. Could you really picture Steam taking off in a hypothetical alternate past where Microsoft set up their own gaming store, preinstalled on every Windows machine, packed with all of Microsoft's own exclusive first-party titles and as many third-party titles as a company with the reach of Microsoft could attract? Because I really can't, or at least not to remotely to the same degree. Valve's growth was made possible by the void of MS' absence.

Google at the very least filed a complaint in respect to this. Making a case for "not being competitive in the console space" is not going to sway the CMA. Phil is purposefully omitting information though. What he really meant is making good games and XBOX's current business model with Gamepass are fundamentally not compatible. Microsoft, however, is not very interested in abandoning this subscription model or cloud gaming. Ultimately, Sony (and by extension Nintendo) were absolutely right. We've seen a recovery by the PS3 on the back of good high quality games during the PS3/X360 era mind you. You think just because their console doesn't run at 4K 60 fps that their console is free? $300 isn't cheap no matter how you try to spin it. So does Nintendo just have no competitor? By your logic Nintendo is without a competitor and therefore shoudlnt have to make good games because there are somehow not in the console market in your mind. They are in the consolr market. Console gamers have to make choices everyday, and buying a game is buying a game, doesn't matter which console it is. Many console market customers are about to choose to buy Zelda Tears of thr Kingdom, and save money by not buying Redfall. Nintendo isn't some outside force that somehow doesn't have to make themselves appealing vs paying for something on Sony or Xbox. They still have to compete for the attention of gamers like the other too. Gametime is important and they make sure time is spent playing on their platform vs the others. I read that Sony made 6.2 Bil from Games Sales last year. Microsoft is already making 1 Bil each quarter from Gamepass, so 4 Bil a year. They passed 30 million subscribers, so they need to get to 45 million to earn equal revenue from games as Sony (50% growth). Sony sells more consoles, but they don't make money on those, just like Microsoft. There's people who buy consoles and buy 1 game a year max. I think the economics of GamePass work in Microsofts favor and they are going to earn more money per customer. There's a reason all big media companies are going towards subscription services... @@Francis-of8cw People say subscriptions like streaming services make “so much money”, and then you find out they’re all lying about their viewership ratings to get more investors to pay for it. Not to mention (check out “Upper Echelon”) that ratings systems include things like social media interaction as part of “viewership” instead of strictly people who subscribe and watch that show. It’s much easier to calculate value off a sold product. Pay $20 for a movie, and the studio gets X. Streaming isn’t that clear cut. User pays $15/m, but watches a variety of things, to varying lengths. The amount of new subs around a show’s launch and if they view it might be more clear, but the company is going to be paying licensing fees for things that don’t get watched/“make money”. It’s partly why Netflix is introducing a tier with ads (along with other streaming services doing the same). Not just because people took some of their shows (that too), but it’s not making as much money as people think, for what it costs to pay for everything involved.

He's not saying they've given up on consoles, or that their future is in Game Pass and xCloud - he said they're not going to beat Sony at Sony's game, which is to say win the console marketshare "race" any time soon. That doesn't mean giving up on consoles - it means accepting that console marketshare is nowhere near as malleable as it used to be, because digital libraries and online ecosystems really took off during the PS4/Xbone generation and entrenched people like phone ecosystems have. Tens of millions of consoles are still going to be an important part of their strategy, as will trying to give people a good reason to buy one - but it also means PC, services like Game Pass, and perhaps cloud at some point down the line. None of these statements are even new for Spencer - he simply expressed things more starkly than usual with the "out-consoling" line, and the one about no single 11/10 game fundamentally changing console marketshare. Years and years of Sony-tier critically acclaimed titles would likely start to bend that marketshare graph in their favour, but no single game (or even year of games) is going to do it. The CMA's decision was based on an assumption that cloud gaming is an imminently emerging market that is going be really large in the next handful of years (they literally said they thought it was "likely" ABK would have their own cloud service within the next two years), and a questionable interpretation of cloud gaming marketshare that considered ALL XGP subscribers as Microsoft cloud gaming customers, but simultaneously then didn't, say, include all Amazon Prime subs as Luna subscribers despite the fact that Prime comes with a catalogue of games on that service.

@@MiguelRodriguez-lp9et I think the gaming industry is shifting towards a digital services only model where you'll be able to play your games on any device. Consoles will be obsolete and Sony will follow in the footsteps of Microsoft. Keep in mind the video had nothing to do with the current (rumors) in regards to Microsoft, it was about Microsoft acquiring ABK which they did, so yes this video aged like Milk.

This is actually what I don't understand about Microsoft, and Phils comment about not being able to "outconsole" Sony and Nintendo just further confuses me.... Why did they even release another console? Why did Microsoft not say: "We want Gamepass to be a success, we should act as a publisher only". Deals like Zenimax and Activision aquisitions are obiously long in the making, and the negotioations certainly started a couple of years ago. If Microsoft had withdrawn from the console market, they could've released their games and GP on PC, Playstation and (partly) Nintendo. Sure Sony and Nintendo would've wanted a fee from GP, but the potential reach would have been far far greater. Im not saying this wouldve been good for us consumers, because less competition is always bad, but from Microsofts PoV it would've made sense imo.

@Alic4444 Жыл бұрын
You don't think trying to buy up over half the developers in the entire game industry is a major attempt at attacking your main competitors? Not everyone has the same approach. Sega's work was more on the creative side, but becoming the one platform holder with aquisitions is Microsoft's main strategy over their entire history.
@cloudair4154 Жыл бұрын
@@Alic4444 how old are you? i don't mean that negatively but i wonder if you're old enough to remember microsoft's history.. they used to buy companies just to remove them from the pool of competition.. am i saying this is what they're doing exactly? not necessarily, but it is important to understand that an acquisition may very well not mean what we generally think it means.. generally we think "great! a new acquisition! more games on the way!" its not that simple though.. and there is evidence of this because ms has been buying studios for years and under NO circumstance has their output or quality paralleled the amount of new talent we've been led to believe they've acquired... as a matter of fact, ms has had major layoffs this year... and if i'm not mistaken, some of those are in the gaming division.. so just keep in mind that its not as cut and dry as "microsoft is aquiring studios and talent" especially when that headline is followed up with news of layoffs soon after.. which we've most certainly seen from ms recently.. they may not be doing what we all want them to do with said "acquisitions" ... and on a more simple note.. some of the studios they've bought- we haven't heard from since

Not surprised. They mismanaged what studios they had during the Xbox One generation. Adding more to that just means more mismanaged studios. The only ones that’ll work out fine are the ones that could already manage themselves.

@@mrshmuga9 Hmm. That's Turn Ten, the Forza studio. And......nah, that's all. Rest are s**t at project management. Ah, I just remembered Phil put Turn Ten to work on the next Fable rpg game, a genre they have zero experience with, using the Forza engine.....
@mrshmuga9 Жыл бұрын
@@mappybc6097 I’d add the Gears studio. Forza and Gears seem to be the only studios with consistent quality. Ya putting them on Fable sounds… not great, given MS’ management track record. If they have any problems. Using the Forza engine sounds stupid. I know there’s licensing fees but use Unreal at that point. Who knows though. Horizon (adventure) was made by the Killzone team (shooter), and Hogwarts Legacy (adventure) was made by the Disney Infinity team of all things. …okay they also did Tak, and some other licensed adventure games, but they were all small scale. Hogwarts Legacy was their first AAA game. I wouldn’t say I’m convinced though. More like “I’ll be surprised if it’s just mediocre”.

For the next episode, can you start the outro fade song way early? Like 2 minutes ahead of where you would normally do it? Just this long, slow, confusing ramp in volume where people think "am I hearing music? What is that?" to "Oh the episode is about to end, Kyle's making his final points..." to "What is going on?" to "Which sentence is the last sentence?" to "this bit is making me uncomfortable and I'm having a hard time paying attention". That is not what he meant by they are not in the business to out-console. They are in the business to provide services. When Xbox was popular it was during Xbox 360. But it wasn't the console. It was Xbox Live. He did say their goal is to bring friends together and play. Since both Sony and Nintendo have been slow with online services this is also a logical niche to carve. So why not stay focused on it. It is prudent to leverage what you already are ahead of than to play catch up. In today's economy it is stupid to take risks. Even Nintendo is playing it safe by keeping their old Switch.

I don't think people understood what Phil said. I also think that he should have been more explicit. When he talked about making great games to flip the sales, he was talking to the fanboys who want Xbox to sell more consoles than PlayStation in order to win. He should have added that they were going to make great games, not only to sell consoles but also to attract more people to Gamepass and Xcloud.
