@@GaryB94558 I did four years ago. Cant say what other dealers will do. Also can’t say if the dealer I worked for still does this. Nothing was through Toyota, was through the Accessories department that was at the dealership. So it was like third party, like for example Tint. But was installed by Toyota techs. Warranty was only covered by our dealer regarding powertrain.

I love 4 runners but the desperation for more power really is sad. This suv should come with a v-8 as a base engine, not some 6 cylinder !
@davidfence6939

Well, your comment is 3 years old and the V8 is mostly dead across the average consumer brand. Sure, you can get it in a luxury brand like Lexus on a 460, but you pay that premium. And with the idiotic push for EVs I doubt we'll ever see a return to V8s as an option. Sad fact is America is built for everyone to drive EVs and that will take trillions of dollars of infrastructure, power plant building, millions of chargers throughout the US, etc to be viable. We're another generation from that being the norm, but the people living in fantasy worlds think otherwise.

Supercharge it. You have the 1 GR-FE. I had a 2007 Tacoma and in my opinion this is the best engine Toyota has ever put in the Mid-size. It's bullet proof. I think you will be extremely happy with the result.

For those asking about MPG loss. Maybe 1-2 depending on how you drive. Yes you will need to run 91. I lost the most significant mpg from regear, lift, rack, additional weight and tires. Running higher octane isn’t a downside it’s a plus side when it comes to the performance and longevity of the motor. Yes in some states it’s pretty pricey especially here in CA but even after I sold the runner, I still put 91 in my 38 gallon tank on my tundra. As for the bottom end and internals and fuel pump comment. No need to do any internals or fuel pump. You’re barely pushing 6 lbs. and it’s been proven to be safe. The only additional parts added is a heat exchanger and pump and cooler plugs. In terms of dollar for the power, I went from 218/207 wheel to 328/307 👍🏼

I have test driven a tacoma with a TRD supercharger. The power is a night and day difference. It makes steep hills feel flat. Accelerating to 70mph on a short freeway on ramp happens instantly. Just insane!

But honestly Jason. Why even bother. The only argument is how expensive it is. If you can afford it then do it. 5psi of forced induction is nothing. Toyota guys are the literal end of the spectrum of worrying about reliability. Again 5psi of forced induction will really not express a significant increase of load on the motor. So it comes down to money. Do the gears and the sc if you can swing it. My 2 pennies

Seshboogie it will help with off the line, but the only gears available are 4.56’s and 4.88’s. Even if he went with 4.56’s, and with 285 tires, it will rev higher than stock at highway speeds. The best gear for 285’s would be about a 4.10, and no one makes it.

me personally i would supercharge it, in a way your gonna be putting less strain on the drive train since it wouldn't have to hunt for gears. Also TRD has offered superchargers for the V6 and V8 Toyota's for awhile and only recently discounted them and even when they had them Toyota still backed up the full warranty on the power trains with the supercharger which is about the only company i know has done that with any significant power gains.

The trd superchargers on the tacoma were discontinued due to toyota going from an Otto cycle to Atkinson cycle so the time and money to retune for CARB was not cost effective in Toyotas bigger plans. Thing is an Atkinson cycle is actually more efficient for supercharging than otto is.

Jason, I had one installed by a ASME certified shop back in February 2018. My truck is currently at the Toyota dealership getting a brand new bottom end being installed after cylinder #4 lost compression. I have a question into Magnuson right now, waiting to hear an answer if the tune is running too lean. Power is fantastic but it has already effected my reliability. Think about this and ask a ton of questions!

D c $9,500, Toyota is standing behind my 7 year/100,000 no deductible Platinum Warranty so it’s not costing me anything out of pocket. Magnuson will only warranty 36,000 miles actually on your vehicle, if you have 37,000 your hosed and 3 Years, plus it has to be installed by an ASME certified mechanic. Magnuson finally got ahold of me Wednesday (a week after I e-mailed their tech question via e-mail, the only way to answer tech questions) and then told me they have a one month old de-tune they are recommending and want me to send the supercharger back to them to check it out again before I re-install which they are saying could take 4-8 weeks! Plus, the Magnuson rep told me he was calling because someone alerted them about my post on IG! Needless to say, I am paying Toyota take it off and going back to stock because the Magnuson rep told me it could have been running lean because of high altitude or a bad tank of gas. Not my idea of “reliable power”. I am not at all impressed with Magnuson’s customer service or response. They have my information from when I registered it after my install in February by an ASME certified Magnuson distributor and I never heard a peep out of them about the new tune. My speculation/opinion and a few others who have had the same issue I have found out about, is this is a problem they are trying to keep on the down low, so basically all of us who are early adopters have been guinea pigs for Magnuson, for them to be saying these are still as reliable is a joke! For a upgrade you pay $5,700 for and put on a $45,000 vehicle, Magnuson can be way more proactive! Caveat Emptor, buyer beware!!!

D c Toyota is proving how good they treat their customers and how excellent their customer service is! Their mechanics found the issue and decided to cover it under warranty. I’m not saying this is all because of the supercharger, they obviously felt this was a warrantable issue, but I received no warm fuzzies from Magnuson that they have their product figured out, nor were there any warnings when I talked to reps pre-purchase on how finicky they could be with fuel/altitude/tuning, for thee guys on this video saying “just don’t beat it up” is stupid, if your inclined to buy a supercharger, you are probably the type to use the power! I was heading to the sand dunes in Central Oregon when my truck let me know there was an issue. You don’t spend that type of $$$$ to drive like grandma!

I put a magnuson supercharger on my LX450....best investment. The low end torque off road is awesome (meaning I don't really have to touch the throttle) and its not hunting for gears on the highway. They do generate more heat so keeping an eye on the temps is crucial. I had to modify my fan clutch/colder plugs/3 core radiator.

The supercharger is a great option but I would absolutely recommend you regear first especially since you are hauling the trailer and you have a slightly oversized tire. After you put new gears in it then decide if you need more power.
@gilvietor1918
@gilvietor1918 6 жыл бұрын
My 2 cents. If I were you, I wouldn't do it, and this is why. You'll worry about it. Another thing is fuel, some folks had problems with ethanol content issues with the 5.0 supercharged (something to gauge). Granted, most of the time it is no big deal, and you'll have your fuel that you trust/like (there is a wonderful app Pure Gas to help you find ethanol free fuels). But again, I get the impression that you'd be one of those guys who worries about it, my dad was that way, completely. In some ways, I am that way with certain things. I am sure it is great, I am sure it helps with mileage, I am sure it shifts less. But every time it goes to climb a hill, or you start watching temps off roading, you're going to worry about it. Also, a buddy of mine, one of the smartest engineers I have ever been around, he put one of the TRD's on his 4runner back in 1999. He drove it like he stole it, and he loved it, as well as, wondered why others don't do it. But again, he's an engineer who was brilliant and insanely mechanically inclined. Also if you're wanting to try something different you can hook your trailer up to my ZR2 diesel and drive it up a pass here, but I'm in Arizona (havasu). Just shoot me a message the next time you're in Arizona.

I have a second generation 4runner in Australia which has done almost 90.000 miles. The 3.0 litre V6 is now an anchor on someones boat. I fitted the Lexus quad cam V8 with a minor modification to the cooling system,. Installed a 6 speed manual from the Toyota Prado and had the speedometer recalibrated to suit the new gearbox. Fuel consumption from the 4.2 L V8 is around 28 MPG on the open road and 0 - 60 in about seven seconds, A great car for long distance touring and a great four wheel drive when off road in the desert

Jason you're smarter than to ask the man responsible for selling superchargers if they are going to do any harm to your 4Runner. That's like asking the guy selling you meth if it's dangerous. You would be shocked at how much you gain from regearing.. Yes the supercharger will be fun, but you have to consider the eextra cost of premium fuel, and there has to be some added ware on your 4Runner. Anyway yes a supercharger will be fun , but make sure you look at all the pros and cons.

prerunnermaniac, agreed. Plus he gave bad information about boost on an S/C. He said most people will be in boost for 5% of the time. Incorrect. A supercharger is mechanical forced induction and there will be some boost. It’s not like a turbocharger, driven by exhaust gases where you can be off-boost.

Modern PD and twin screw blowers have a bypass valve that open when Throttle position is such that there is still vacume in the manifold. AKA 95% of air flow by passes that rotors and no work can be applied to the air flow. Meaning no boost/air flow through the rotors and negligible load on the crankshaft. FYI I am part of the design/fab and tuning team between what was Stage One Tunning/BRP and Static X motersports with factory support from Honda that designed a roots based supercharger for the s2000 so you could say I have some expert knowlege on the subject of forced induction.

Yes, do it. I have supercharged a car before, the torque and horsepower gains are big. The engine can handle it, its durable enough to handle the extra power. It won't actually effect the gas mileage as much as long as you keep your foot out of it. I find it funny how much some people complain about gas mileage... it's basically a truck, trucks aren't Eco boxes.

Honestly the cheapest and simplest solution would be to cut weight. How much stuff do you really need (excluding safety/recovery gear). You keep adding stuff and adding weight and complexity. What ever happened to K.I.S.S.? What couldn't be accomplished with. RTT/awning and a camp stove? I'm a gadget guy myself, so I get it, but when you're packing on so much stuff that you're overwhelming your vehicle, maybe it's time to reconsider what you take with you. Just a thought.

Go with a re gear first. Im not convinced adding a S/C at that cost and the additional potential headaches are conducive to a reliable 4Runner. Now you'll be running premium AND getting less mpg. Honestly I think if you're really going to go further, you'd be better off selling the parts on the 4R, sell it, and go with a Land Cruiser. 4Runners are great but there IS a point where it doesn't make sense.

Also you're buying a 4Runner because it can last 300,000-400,000 miles or more even with a Magnuson. I mean Toyota used to offer them as an option! I'd pay for it. Coming from an early 00s WJ V8 I can definitely tell a difference. In my WJ I could easily overtake someone if needed on the interstate/country road. 4Runner not so much with base engine. And you don't have to even push the supercharger to the extreme to get the performance needed to be just that much better. Extra cost for better engine performance and a better daily driver imo.

You were correct when you made the vid. I am on my 5th 4Runner Gens 3-5... Gen 3, gen 4 with a 6 , 2 gen 4 V8's one Sport One Limited and a 2017 TRD Off Rd Premium...The 6's regardless of generation, lacked torque & make the trans dance through the gears...The 4.7 V8's don't do this despite no giant Hp advantage.. Torque.. & Superchargers produce good Torque... My V8's all ran at lower RPM's due to torque allowing my trans to stay in higher gears without downshifting thus saving fuel & wear & tear... My 8's always averaged the same mileage as my 6's & in certain conditions with no lead footing, the V8's got 1-4 MPG better... I think a S/C would do the same thing...

I put the TRD/Magnuson supercharger with 7th injector on my 3rd gen. It really helped all the way around. I feel like it brought it up to where it should have been from factory since the 3rd gens were really lacking power. They make a solid product and it's not going to hurt you. It didn't even change my MPG... unless I hammer it of course. Also, it's just cool to do and will make you more cool. Sounds good too. I love the whine. I've had mine on for about 80k miles and never have had a single problem with it or from it. DO IT!!!

I talked to Serena at SDHQ about hers briefly (not sure if you saw her at the show, cement TRD Pro in the vendor area) and she has done the regear and s/c. Her input led me to go ahead and move forward with the s/c and mine is getting installed in a few days. Like you, all I want out of the 4R is a little more highway power. I'm going to be doing some cross country travel soon and every time I go to Flagstaff from Phoenix, even in an unloaded 4Runner, the damn thing is gear hunting at 70 mph and struggling. I just want to get up the damn hill or pass people in a timely manner. Like everyone else said, and you've said yourself, it's not going to be a race car. It'll never be a race car. But it will have the power it seems to be missing as is, let alone with added weight of bumpers, tires, skid plates, etc. I am kind of nervous since mine is a 2018 and it's a pretty new product, but going back to a trip I have planned in August (AZ to AK), the mountains are going to murder me trying to go up. As far as mpg loss, people that have it say they're seeing about 1 mpg reduction. Sure you need to use premium and if you commute a lot, it'll add up. But when you have offroading as a hobby, I don't think you're in it to be frugal.

We are saving up to buy a used 4R TRD Pro by next year. I definitely want to supercharge it. Coming from having turbocharged Subarus, we love having the power when we need it, especially on the freeway in the mountains. What I've learned from modifying our Subarus is as long as you run supporting mods and you are tuned (aka engine management) for any changes to the motor, especially when you're changing things that effect A/F ratio, it will last you a very long time. I'd put out there that you'd have better longevity by having the car pro tuned, you can put any other mods you want and change gear ratios on the car as long as the car is pro tuned for those specific modifications. Reflashing with an off the shelf tuning map isn't always the best when it comes to engine modifications and longevity of the motor.

For an Overland rig, it seems like a bad idea. The extra power would be nice for driving on quality roads, but with the amount of weight you carry and the trailer you probably wouldn't use much of the power while off roading. And it would likely have a negative affect on fuel efficiency, range, reliability, parts availability, and fuel availability. All things that seem more important in an overlanding vehicle.

Jason, supercharge it for sure and then regear and tune it. That way you can keep the 4runner and not to have to buy another new car. As well as have the Toyota reliability. Essentially the Magnuson S/C is a TRD S/C. Reliability both ways, always.

His warranty description is completely incorrect. This is from the Magnuson warranty, "Term: 36 Months / 36,000 Miles, Time Measured from Vehicle Original In-Service Date. Mileage Measured from ZERO (0)" ..."In order for a vehicle to be eligible for the Magnuson Products, LLC limited powertrain warranty.  The vehicle must have less than 36,000 miles on the odometer and the Magnuson Products, LLC Supercharger System must be installed within 3 years of the original in-service (purchase) date as determined by the manufacturer of the vehicle e.g. OASIS, GMVIS, Dealer Connect."...Meaning if you're mileage hits/or is above 36,001, you're screwed. Toyota is NOT going to let you file a warranty claim if you have an issue with the engine.

On my third 4Runner. Have a 3.4 swapped '91. Had a '99 Limited. Own a 2003 V8 Limited now. Also had a 2013 Tacoma with the 4.0. I really like the V8 over the other engines. Though down on HP compared to the 6, the torque makes the difference. The V6 is underpowered. If you can afford it, supercharge it.

Thanks for doing this video, I'm also looking for trailer pulling power. Did anyone give you mpg before and after? The guy Magnuson said there where no trade off's, but I wonder about mpg if driven the same.
@SwellRunner
@SwellRunner 6 жыл бұрын
I’ve heard 1-2 mpg in reduction. But just having it wouldn’t affect mileage, it’s using it on boost, and how often that would make the difference. I added the sprint booster figuring for sure I’d lose efficiency, since I’m accelerating a little more aggressively more often. However, that’s not been the case. Still seeing the same consumption rate. But I still drive it like a grandpa.

I’d start out with a regear. Going up a mountain, you will still have to worry about lack of air with a super charger. Regear is much better for increasing your wheel torque. Think about semi trucks. They make like no HP and a ton of torque. They also have super short gears. Also, although the gears are going to be aftermarket so they may not have the same quality as OE Toyota, I’m sure it’s way less risky reliability wise than doing a super charger.

Honestly, give the 4Runner to your wife and drive the LC200. Everyone is running the 4Runner. Build out the 200 and it’ll tow better and wheel better than your old rig. Plus, no one has a channel that’s wheeling a 200 series. Make a mark and get that 200 going!!

If you don’t mind paying for premium fuel.. Only disadvantage of a supercharger is having to use premium and idk about you most small towns or isolated places don’t have premium 91 octane fuel on hand. Soooo your screwed in some way and going somewhere without 91 octane and having to use regular fuel shit might have bad luck with bad or dirty fuel going into your tank. That be one pretty penny to fix.

Land Cruiser, and the comments you made in this movie about liking your wife's Land Cruiser but liking your 4Runner more, I would love to see you do a movie comparing the two. Especially since you have both at home. What do you like more about the 4Runner than the Land Cruiser?

Don’t do it. It will not have a Toyota warranty with Toyota reliability. I don’t care what anyone says, aftermarket forced induction kits aren’t as reliable as OEM ones. If you want more pulling power with slightly less mpg, get a Tundra or a Landcruiser.

What tire size are you running again? I believe if you regear and supercharge you will be very very happy. I recently supercharged my 3rd gen AMD I can't believe the difference. I'm also going smaller pulley and 7th injector here soon.

EDIT:: They did not mention the amount your fuel consumption increases when you get in the boost. After watching this video, you are dead set already, Your mind is made up. So if you are going to go this route, look into water methanol injection to keep cylinder temps down when towing under stressful conditions. Dont buy a mail order tune, have it done on a dyno, reliability will not be a problem. And upgrade injectors.

I was wondering if you love the 4Runner platform so much but want more power why you wouldn't look around for a 4 Runner with a V8? You live in the south were vechicles last for ever. Why not start with what you want and then add more power if you need? They do make a schedule for the 4.7L after all.

I have a 2018 4l 4runner with a K&N intake. Had that before the charger. I put a borla exhaust on. Then I got the itch and did Magnusun. It will pull hard and fast. I can set up at whatever speed I want and set cruise and let it go. Yeah he says not a racecar. But if you turn the traction control off and hold the brake enough to get the revs up the thing will do a real burnout. The acceleration is great for a 4l. I can go uphill from a stop and within a very short time I'm at 50+ mph heading for 60. Been on for 7 mo. no problems. Walts auto in Topeka did it. Hauls a trailer easily.

You are going to be living at a higher altitude, you should probably invest in a supercharger. I have driven a lot in Colorado and going up and down the mountains in some stock vehicles is horrible. With the supercharger you will be able to not rev the engine as high.

I’d I did try to get one at my local dealership on my Runner with only 25 miles on it but their head mechanic said no way, due to warranty issues but sounds like Toyota would have covered it. I did find a Toyota dealership in Dallas that would install it but already spent the money by the time they got back with me, so maybe next tax return I’ll pull the trigger and get one.

Not sure if this was already posted here or not. But by putting a way larger diameter tire on an already slowish vehicle, will only make it way worse in the power department. Got to change the gear ratio.

If you are staying in Florida you don't need it...if you are moving to Utah buy the vehicle that already has the horsepower and gearing that will handle the West..you will end up saving money in the long run..wasn't that long ago you had considered selling the 4runner for the lack of power..now the purchase of a new vehicle is justified..lot of money spent for a mod..$7500.00 plus higher cost of fuel and compromised power due to altitude...have fun..tough decision either way
