@@josephwood499 Hello Joseph. I'm due to change my Volvo any day now. Here's a run down of the pros and cons. *Pros*: It's exceptionally comfortable and smooth to drive, especially when put into Eco mode. It makes effortless progress and eats up the motorway miles without hesitation. Gear changes are barely noticeable. It's also very spacious, 4 adults and luggage fit no problem. I find the infotainment system really very straight forward and easy to use (I had noted some reviewers said it was overly complicated but that just simply hasn't been my experience) and the ability to link your phone to the car and remotely open or start it is a great feature, especially in winter as it means you get into a toasty car. It feels very sure footed. It's no BMW, of course, but it can handle itself well with good body control. But I find that the driving dynamics encourage one to just have a pleasant and relaxing cruise rather than blasting about the place. I tend to drive very gently and calmly as a result. I still think it's a very good looking car, inside and out. *Cons*: Even with it always in Eco Mode and driving gently, using the stop/start etc, I struggle to get above 31 MPG in mixed driving conditions. Far off the 40-odd Volvo claim. Upon first impression, I found the car to be well screwed together. However, after 18,000 or so miles, the car is plagued with a variety of trim rattles and squeaks. One in particular, behind the dashboard, required 3 separate visits to Volvo, including them removing the whole dash, but to no avail. I was given the car back and told to let it "develop" more. I grew very tired with the level of customer service at the Volvo dealer here in Glasgow so I've just learned to live with it and the other rattles as I don't want to deal with them anymore. But they drive me mad. So much so I'm looking to change the car now. I believe this problem isn't as prevalent in the Swedish built V90's, but the S90's are built in China and I know I'm not alone in finding fit and finish issues. Lastly, and it's a small one, but whilst the infotainment system is easy to use, upon first start up of the car, it's very slow and laggy and takes a good few mins to boot up properly and get up to speed. And whilst the app is good, it isn't perfect and sometimes fails to communicate with the car randomly. Other than it's standard first service (which I had done at Voltech, a Volvo Independent Specialist here in Glasgow that I would highly recommend) I haven't had any other service costs. All-in-all it's been a good car, and I enjoy it.... If only it didn't squeak and buzz over every tiny little bump! Hope that helps.

I drove a black T8 lwb inscription s90 from vegas to south rim of the Grand Canyon, a 10 hour round trip. The lwb is awesome (not sold in the uk sadly) and made the car look pretty presidential in black. Honestly I would have struggled in any other car. The lane assist and cruise meant I didn’t burn out my concentration. The other amazing thing it does is if you indicate you want to pass the car you’re latched onto, it will check its clear and switch lanes for you, overtake up to the max set speed of the cruise and when you indicate you want to go back over to the “slow” lane, it will move the car back for you. You don’t need to steer it, just rest one finger on the wheel.

The D5 is definitely worth the premium imo. Not for the bhp increase but more so for its responsiveness. The D5 has 'powerpulse' technology which is essentially an air compressor which always keeps the turbos spooled, reducing nearly all turbo lag, delivering more power, earlier. It really does work brilliantly. Secondly the D5 gives the car AWD opposed to the D4's fwd set up. There are also about 5x as many D4's than D5's so residuals theoretically should be better. Returning the premium you lay out initially.

One of these, or the new v70 will be my next car. Swapped from Honda (owned most of them over 30 years) Now I have a volvo. OK its a v40 but has a 5 pot diesel and out pulls almost every other car I've owned (that included v8s and such too) Volvo certainly are understated, underrated but cool in that gentle Swedish manner! If the price of the hybrid drops enough I might spoil myself... Great review too... Nice to see some love for the swede!

I worked at Volvo for a bit in 2017 and this and the XC90 are just pure class (I think the sky Atlantic adverts helped Volvos image) if I was looking for a big saloon I don’t think you can do much better really, but I know if it was my own money I’d bottle it and get some German alternative, but every time I saw one of these I’d be thinking should have got the Volvo, whilst sat in my harsh riding BM

Brandon Maze Performance isn’t necessarily top of my list. Typically I drive German autos but thought I’d take a look at a Volvo to save some cash, but was surprised to find little price difference. With the exception of the Subaru boxer which whilst characterful is unfortunately unrefined there isn’t a 4 cyl on the market that is worth it to me. Once you’ve had a V6 or a V8 a 4, (especially a diesel), is an awful thing to sit behind. I’d be equally dismissive of a German 4 cylinder engine.

I had an S80 (2001 - Petrol). Best car I ever bought. Most comfortable car I ever bought. Juicy in town (11mpg) but could get to 40mpg on the motorways. Effortless driving even without all the assisted stuff they have now. 10years and 240k miles later and I had to say goodbye to it and didn't have the cash at the time to buy another. I'd have the S90 0r V90 in an instant. (Or Polestar 2...) Thoroughly enjoyed this review. Thanks.

Last Volvo I drove was an S60, the smaller version of the S90. Super comfy and a lovely drive. Big shame though that the D5 is now a 4 pot rather than the 5, the 5 cylinder engine gave it a nicer sound. Great car and the ideal choice for the ex SAAB driver

Really glad to hear you rate the S90. It (or the V90, which I agree looks better) are on my list of cars to own. I have really enjoyed my pdevious 2015 530d, but change of job meant more miles and it had to go. Dabbled with a DS5 (loved the look, drove reasonably well) but it had to go as the driving position and manual made my back ache on my motorway commute. So I swapped the DS5 for a low mileage 2012 S80 with the 5-cylinder 2L D3 engine, Inscription pack and the facelifted interior. Much like the review here of the S90, the driving performance and comfort with the full Sensus system are a delight. It isn't a car for the B roads, but for my 90 mile round trip motorway commute it's just spot on.

Thanks for a great review! I agree with all your comments. My last Volvo was a 1999 V70 2.5TD (5-cyl Audi engine), a great car and eager workhorse. I’ve owned a total of 8 or 9 Volvos and have always been happy with them. The new S90 and V90 are stylish and far removed designwise from their boxy social democratic ancestors from the 80s.

I’m really enjoying working through these reviews, they are excellent. I would respectfully disagree with you about buttons vs touchscreens though. I would far rather have more buttons - you eventually instinctively learn where they are so you don’t need to take your eyes off the road. Touchscreens you are forced to stare at it whilst you navigate the menus. I’m confident you can do this safely, but I really do find it breaks the flow of my driving a bit. Bring back buttons!!

Had the XC90 T8 for 3 years now in Vancouver (traded X5 4.4 and CL550 for it) and it has exceeded our expectations. No issues after 50k km, great quality of the interior, even in the usual areas competitors try and save with cheap plastic (think lower door panels or the boot). I have tried the XC90 T6 and I think that would be the one to go for in the gas lineup. It's hard to justify the T8's extra C$25k, even if the gas consumption is significantly better (we average 6.5 L/100km). Diesel would probably be the way to go, but they don't sell them in Canada. The other thing to note is that the T8 comes with a "digital" AWD system and air suspension. While the latter is excellent, I would prefer having a regular differential to power all 4 wheels, instead of the T8's hybrid system that uses the electric motors to power the rear and the turbo-supercharged 2.0L that powers the front wheels. In snow you can feel the computer is working hard to make the system work, but since the front wheels get 3 times more power, it really feels like a FWD car. Personally I preferred the rear biased system found in BMW as it allows for a bit more fun. One little "easter egg" however, when in Pure mode with a fully charged battery, the T8 is powered exclusively by its electric engines in the rear, turning it into a 100% rear wheel drive SUV, albeit with only about 150HP, but fun nonetheless. Overall, it has been a great experience owning it and I would highly recommend. Thanks for the honest reviews, they have been great!
