Just learning a few things through duolingo and watching lots of videos like this and mandaring corner, I'm really starting to feel the value of the brain soaking as more and more words seem to pop into focus, it's so fun and exciting. Thank you for sharing this lovely and valuable interview

Please guys dont use Duolingo to learn chinese, this is waste of ur time.... Od course u will learn something, by this app, but currently there is so many apps to learn chinese like hellochinese or Superchinese etc. Having these apps, using Duolingo is completly useless, unless ur target its to learn 15 min day by day, only to know some words and be able to create 3 sentences after 6 months learning
Perhaps you can study the many mandarin and some Cantonese "Chinese (Mandarin) medical conversation" youtube videos also "Cantonese medical conversation" videos, 1 or 2 "Hokkien, etc." Since you must speak to patients and doctors and nurses, etc. you would have to speak Chinese. Hope that these help. Zhu ni, hao yunqi!!
@paulwalther52373 жыл бұрын
I think the one thing I get out of this is that you need to make the target language relevant to you. Doing interesting activities like reading or watching KZbin or talking to people and using or listening to it often are all ways to make it relevant I think. He talked about his experience speaking Chinese to people in China but most of us aren't IN China so can't use that method.
@marty.l2 жыл бұрын
If you find Chinese streams, podcast to watch listen to here on KZbin and on the net, you can listen/watch anytime. Just focus on topics/areas you are interested in.

I learned Spanish to a b2 level on seven weeks. My first romance language, french, was learned to a level of at least b2 in 4 months. In six weeks I got to a level of B1 or B2 in Italian. My level in Chinese is advanced beginner ( hsk 2 or 3) after six weeks. Clearly it takes a lot longer to learn Chinese than to learn a romance language, if you already speak English and a bunch of romance languages already.

说老师英语的发音越来越标准!! 好厉害! 我也有一个“汉语家长”, 她又耐心又幽默。找到她以来,我中文说得提高了很多! Chris is such a smart man, I couldn't agree more with everything he said. Finding a language parent is useful, but finding a teacher like Shuo is just GOLD 💛🧡❤️

If you rewatch it, pause and writing it out by hand; you will be amazed at how much you learn. I do this with Chinese songs I want to learn by watching lyrics videos and writing it out by hand myself and practice singing them.

Very cool. Between Melnyks chinese podcast, duolingo and one of the courses I've bought with Shuo Shuo, I'm able to understand and pick out meanings of words as they're having this conversation. It helped immensely that there were both english and simplified chinese characters in the subtitles - I experienced plenty of 'ah-ha!' moments while listening/watching this for words I had learned previously and hearing them in a different context and hearing them being used in a natural, conversational way. It's all baby steps - I can clearly see the progress I'm making with learning mandarin, little by little, and eventually I'll be able to eliminate the subtitles altogether and understand everything being discussed. Thanks!

And Chris Lonsdale's Chinese is superb. I have some knowledge of both Chinese and Thai, so I thought I would check out if they really live up to their claims. I'm amazed they both do-in my opinion (Lonsdale in Chinese, the girl in Thai). Don't want to be a party-pooper, but the claim that they each learned each language in six months should, perhaps, need some clarification. I mean, the girl, Shuo, or Som in Thai, mentions elsewhere that she's lived in Thailand for six years, and Lonsdale mentions elsewhere that, while it took him six months to get "fluent" (not a scientifically quantifiable term, I'm afraid) it took him longer than six months to reach native level. So, while I'm certain it took them much longer than six months to get to their present level of fluency, that level is really, really impressive!

Thank you for sharing! That was very helpful. I learned some tips and methods to improve my target language acquisition. I will start listening to podcast/streamers/shows in the target language along with the apps that I'm using and adding to.

I've heard that really intelligent people are too modest to see how smart they are. My memory and focus are awful, so I couldn't learn 200 words in 6 months. I've already tried :( The more I learn, the more I forget. I think you're brilliant and I'm just stupid.

I mean this guy went to China when he was 20... It's another story when u learn for example chinese while u living there, u are getting some 3 times extra boost just by being there, it's the same like u have Chinese partner and some chinese friends and because of that u have many opportunities to practice ur language, and what is more important big motivation, because u get instant feedback. It's way harder to learn alone without the 'guide' and non chinese people around u

I suppose this approach is feasible if you don't spend any time at all trying to learn the characters. " 10:14 - Focus on getting the meaning first (before the words). Direct connect to mental images."
