one thing you didn't take into consideration with the gigabytw boards. If you want a white board there is absolutely ZERO competition the pro ice and the elite ice are in a league of their own with the white connectors . I'd have loved to go an s tier board but my pc is a white build. All the other boards are not even worth considering.

This is the board I'm sorta leaning toward now too. What's kinda strange is that the 2nd pcie slot operates only in x4 mode, which seems to also put the first slot in x8. I'm trying to find a board that has 3 total pcie slots and where PCIE #2 is a) wired to the CPU b) isn't blocked by a wide 4090 card plugged into PCIE #1. (PCIE #3 is just for an audio card, so I only need x1 lane for it and assume it'll be tied to the chipset)

If they made the NOVA in White (currently building a PC - searching for motherboards) then I would be 100% buying it! I would have absolutely ZEERO problems paying for the dreaded 'White Component Tariff" either. In today's age it's unheard of to find a board of these features to be sold at this price. Digital Post Code, thick azz back plate (having one at all, even!), the Audio, Power Delivery etc.

The Nova has basically no premium audio, though. You would have to spend for a sound card which would wipe out a good chunk of its value.

It doesn’t have the nicer DAC or AMP the Taichi boards have, so sound quality through high-impedance headphones will be thinner and less clean. I have an old Z390 Taichi board with premium audio and it sounds way better than my old mini PC with basic audio.

I got the x870E Hero as well because of the missing post code display and nitropath of the ProArt. 5 GbE will have to do. I also have the 9950X, so the same CPU and MB as you. I got 4x48gb Ram (G.Skill 6400) running at 5200 MT/s (VDDSOC 1.25 V, UCLK DIV1 MODE 1:1), but no luck going higher than that. I don't know enough about impedances and timing controls to get anywhere with those (Processor ODT etc). It would be great if you could do a guide on that (for 192gb RAM), not necessarily to reach the magic 6000, but just to get a little bit further, like 5400 or 5600. You mentioned that just copying your numbers doesn't necessarily work, so a guide on what one might try, how to approach it, would be great.

Why didn’t you get the X670E Hero then? I’m pretty sure it would have been cheaper and the only thing that’s lacking is Wifi7. The X870E chipset is copy-paste X670E with mandatory Wifi7 and USB4 (the latter which the older Hero already had)

@@kerotomas1 @kerotomas1 The X670E only has one 2.5 GbE port, so it was never a candidate for me. NitroPath was an argument for the X870E Hero over the ProArt. Plus the code display and possible improvements in memory traces.

Thank you for your diligence in preparing the X870E motherboard comparison data, which is interesting and useful. I would like to give you some feedback on the Asrock X870E Nova WiFi that you placed in the 'S+' category. "AMD X870/X870E Roundup, 21 Boards Tested" by "Hardware Unboxed" in KZbin found this motherboard had the worst high speed memory stability of all 21 X870/X870E motherboards tested: Asrock had a rock bottom score (pun intentional) of only 7400 MT/sec maximum speed for DDR5 memory (manual timings; 1 hour Prime95) while just under half the boards were stable at 8000 or higher. The Nova also failed to boot with DDR5-8000 EXPO memory. 'Hardware Unboxed' is a very professional Australian channel, so it would be interesting if you could either verify his results or contest them. How much improvement can one expect from a BIOS update? I'm not advocating that these AMD motherboards must run with DDR5-8000 RAM, however it does give peace of mind when operating with DDR5-6000 (for example) that there's adequate room for stable performance. Keep in mind that memory failures don't suddenly cut in at a specific frequency - it is a gaussian distribution implying that the chances of failure are diminished the further away you are from a DDR5 frequency that definitely fails. In addition, I also found other data points he measured interesting, e.g. VRM temperature measured under controlled conditions. With thanks for your cooperation on this.

@@ouraskc6137 I have a b650e-e and I'm having microcode issues with my mobo. Bios resets whenever I unplug the psu from the wall. No it's not bios battery issue as well since I changed it three times with new batteries(also checked the voltages of the batteries with a DMM and all are fine). Also time and date doesn't reset or change, only the bios settings. CMOS reset didn't fix it as well. It's not a cpu and ram issue as well since I torture tested it for HOURS and all are stable. Haven't had any blue screen or crashes either. Just that single annoying issue. Honestly I'm tempted to get the nova too or probably the msi tomahawk but that board design is not that good for me.

The only thing that annoys me is the comparison to Asus x870e Motherboards. I can't really see x870e-e and the Pro Art together in the same tier because Pro Art has more Problems than as seen. First: Pro Art suffers heavly to using never the middle PCIe slot because of big two dual slots graphics cards sufficating each other by not able to breath enough AIR and you aren't able to install a dual chasis Aio PUMP for the dual graphics cards, except you run CPU Air cooling (stupid choise if somone wants more cooling). Second: Pro Art suffers of not having a Asynchronous E-Clock like the x870e-e and the x870e Hero. Third: Charching with any USB device it runs more porly than the other two. Fourth: Lacks postcode severe as the only x870e . Fith: It has the minimum Powerstages design like the Gigabyte 6 layer PCB of x870e (If a CPU from AMD wants more wattage or most likely performence in the next generations, it can make issues in the future, espacially very high overclocking. Sixth: To expensive for being a $450-$520 motherboard in this competiton. The only Advantage that the Pro Art has is Dual Ehernet and one 10G Ethernet PCIe sharing and fan hubs almost the same with the x870e-e. I'm yepping because Asus missed the point of a Pro Art again or otherwise said you failed because you don't wanna improve consumer lives in this leading segments and name shemes.

Yeah, and as stated in the video I kind of want the ProArt in B tier because of no post code. But I think the motherboard is supposed to use blower style GPUs based on the PCIE slot spacing. Being $479 with no post code is kind of a fail in my mind but it's the only motherboard with DP In and does provide 10g for far less money compared to the Godlike.

ProArt to B, LOL - is for creators, those people whom actually use the rig for years without touching it, why would it have a 9 segment post code? It has 4 LEDs if something goes wrong. It also has 10Gbit LAN which the CROSSHAIR does not offer... for $150 more 🤣 The CROSSHAIR also shares lanes with the PCIEX16(G5)_1 On CROSSHAIR and ProArt TPCIEX16(G5)_1he m.2_2 shares lanes with the PCIEX16(G5)_1 because it is PCIe 5 While the other boards usually offer only one PCIe 5 Did you even look up the stuff? Also, lanes-haring is a boon - it gives you options. And if you don't like it, blame AMD for it...

For Aorus Master you can use Gen5 M2 drive on M2A_CPU slot and Gen5 GPU and they will both work at full speed. Only M2B and M2C M2 slots are sharing lanes with the GPU

The Taichi's bottom slot is an x8 that pulls 8 lanes from the top slot in order to run so it does share the GPU lanes. However, none of the M.2. slots share lanes with the GPU.

I like the flexibility that the lower slot could run any device that I might want in the future, but I don't like that it would require sharing the GPU's lanes. Considering that the Nova could run an x1 sound card and a new network card without any sacrifices is realistically all I would ever want. But who knows? Then again, most things could be made to run on USB, too.

You are only thinking about m.2 lane sharing. The Taichi and others share lanes with the second pcil. So, if you use it, it with cut the gpu to x8. The Carbon has a dedicated x4 pcie that does not affect the gpu. Something to think about if that is a use case for you.

I have a 7800x3d and am stuck between Asus x870a Rog strix or the x870 aorus elite… haven’t found any other options that are all white. I’m wanting to use two gen 4 m.2 ssds while not having the pcie lanes to the gpu used at all. I want to be future proofed for 50 series. Any help is very appreciated. Have a blessed day.

Nova is a great card but must be taken in consideration that that motherboard although has some great features also has the cheapest stuff on it. Uses cheapest materials, rather cheapest chips. Price is good but at least in Europe isn't that low, at least not for now and that makes a tough choice.

Interestingly, you consider an 8-layer board as "better" than a 6-layer board. As a PCB designer, I can rather safely tell you that a properly designed board uses as few layers as possible. If I have to go to an 8-layer board and somebody else can do it on 6-layers that is a better PCB designer than me. But if the manufacturer states that they use extra layers to improve thermal conditions or to add extra ground plane layers then it is a different matter. But in >99% of the cases, extra layers are used to make the design work easier (read that as faster, or possible to complete at all) not to improve functionality. The cost penalty for adding two extra layers at that size of the board in the volumes they are produced is less than 5 USD per board. So with such low extra cost, even if it adds up in the volumes, if they actually would gain anything, they would use 8-layer board. Also to be noted, an 8-layer board has a lower MTBF number than a 6-layer board. So 8-layer boards will fail more, compared to 6-layer boards. Well, I just received my ASUS ROG X870E Crosshair Hero today with a 9950X, 4*32GB RAM DDR5 6000MHz, and a 4TB SSD it will be just fine (even if it is an 8-layer board)...

The two things I’m still trying to figure out are RAM and storage: - Everywhere I read, they say to stick with the proven and stable 6000 speeds and that you should always only use 2x sticks of RAM instead of 4x. Some custom PC builder websites disable being able to select anything above 64GB RAM… where 96GB (48x2) and 192GB (48x4) are grayed out. This has all led me to believe that the most optimal RAM selection for x870e hero + 9950x is a set of DDR5 64GB RAM (2x32), and to choose maximum MT/s as long as such a selection doesn’t sacrifice ending up with higher CL (staying in the CL30-32 range). - And with this board, it feels like I’m selling it short if I’m not taking advantage of PCIe 5.0 for the m.2 drive. I would prefer a 4TB-8TB option, but the max for Firecuda 540 is still only 2TB, while the Crucial T700 and Corsair MP700Pro do have 4TB options (the Corsair seemingly stupidly overpriced)… and lastly, I also have the newest Crucial T705 staring at my wallet (for the same high price as the Corsair MP700Pro), but offering a whopping 14,100/12,600. If you don’t mind, I’m SUPER interested in what you went for, for your RAM and storage, and what your thought process was 🙏

I was thinking about dual 48GB modules for 96GB but that would have higher cost and less performance... 128GB should be sufficient for two to three years at least. Nocturnal NH-D15 G2 LBC and Carbonaut carbon thermal pad. Regarding storage I will use a Samsung PCI-e 4.0 990 Pro 2TB that I purchased for a different project. When Samsung put a gen 5.0 PCI-e device on the market at minimum 4TB I will upgrade. A dual port 10Gbit Intel NIC (so not using any LAN or WiFi ports on the MB). A Lian Li V3000 plus case. No hard drives, they are in a Synology 8 bay NAS of 60TB usable storage with two hot spares+2×1TB NVME cache SSD's and a dual 10Gbit adaptor.

It's funny how subjective you let this be. The Taichi Lite being on a tier beneath the Taichi despite being functionally identical is...well...rather comical. "No RGB"...."No quick release" Good. I don't know who replaces their GPUs daily or weekly. The quick release actually becomes useful at that point, but the number of people reseating/replacing a GPU more than once every two years is very, very small. And no RGB is a feature for many people. Fun tier list, but people should know that it's incredibly subjective.

192gb of DDR5 is possible but not at high speeds. 4800 will work. 5200 and 5600 also might work. I'm currently testing 192gb at 5600 on the X870E Taichi but will be testing possibly 6000 in the future. In general aim for a Hynix M-die based kit that has either 5600 or 6000 as the EXPO profile.

If you are going to do some moderate to hardcore overclocking, the hero. If not, the TaiChi, but I would recommend the Carbon over the TaiChi even.

@@XX-ku7dn Actually, coming back to this, I see you specified that price is not a consideration. With that in mind, the Hero offers many more features. The thing that keeps me from considering the Tiachi is no dedicated x4 pcie, which would not take lanes from the GPU. That is why I would get the Carbon over the Taichi for $50 more. But, that is my use case. You may have no need for an x4 or may not even use the second PCIE slot; in that case I'd save the $50 and go with the Taichi. It's great that most of these boards are so good this gen that it comes down to (in many cases) use case and price.

@@RKBenchmarker I'd like the MPG Carbon if it were not for the lack of ECC memory support. Also, limiting the second PCIe 5.0 slot to x4 regardless of how many Gen 5 M.2 drives you use feels like a cost saving measure. It certainly makes the lane switching topology simpler (and therefore cheaper) than boards that run the second slot at x8 or x4 depending on the number of M.2 drives and limits the uses for a second PCIe 5.0 slot. If you were planning on running two GPUs you'd ideally want the option to run them at x8/x8. I would have preferred if the Taichi used a WiFi 7 module that supports 320MHz channel widths (e.g. the QCNCM865 or MT7927) instead of one limited to 160MHz (MT7925) but I don't personally care enough about WiFi on a desktop board for it to be a deal breaker. It can always be upgraded down the line anyway. Lack of a PCIe 4.0 x4 slot is a little frustrating but you could always use an M.2 to PCIe slot adapter to reclaim one of the M.2 slots as an x4 slot instead, especially if your case has an extra slot position below the motherboard.

heads up guys, hardware unboxed tested Asrock x870e Nova and it failed on advertised memory overclock up to 8200... it fails to boot 8000 expo and 7400 was the stable max frequency

@@josephocenada Yes, and if you watched the Hardware Unboxed video until the end, Steve even states as much. Memory compatibility almost always improves over time. However, it's not a guarantee and there's no telling how long it'll take, so if it's really important to you, either get it and wait or pick something else.

I like the Nova but who needs 5 M.2s? I actually like the Taichi Lite for it's LACK of RGB (subjective) and you didn't mention the 5gig ethernet or the lack of a backplate. It really comes down to user needs and preferences when you compare a lot of these, like i just dont care about quick release because I don't change parts out enough.

@@Edgar-u8v9m If you just want a board that takes a single GPU and one or two M.2 drives, and you don't need any of the specific features that they offer, then any of these motherboards will be perfectly fine. In fact most of them are overkill especially if you don't need USB4 or don't want to overclock the CPU. You could easily get away with a B650 board and spend the money you saved on a better GPU.

@Jared-69x The Taichi doesn't have a dedicated x4 pcie slot. It has an x8 which will make you gpu run at x8 also (instead of x16). The Carbon has a 3rd pcie that is an x4 and doesn't affect the gpu.

I will have to say that the Gigabyte Z790 AORUS ELITE X WIFI7 board is a 8 layer 2x copper PCB board that has phenomenal memory overclocking ability. I'm surprised to see that the Gigabyte boards listed here for AMD are only 6 layer.

So Asus Rog Strix x870e- E Gaming wifi is not good for gaming/productivity? If I only use 4 gen m.2 then will it still have issues for my rtx4090 or future gen5 cards like 5090 or 6090? The reason i don't wanna go with hero is because i don't want to do overclocking and i don't care about other extra features it has over E-Gaming. I wanna put in 4x4gen m.2 and 1 gen 3 (which i already have for my OS) and like i said my rtx4090 and also a Sata pci e card for 10 sata hdd/sdd for my 6 sata hdd/ssd drives.

Unfortunately the NOVA is limited to 1 SATA RAID array 0/1 (2 Drives) the AsMedia on 3/4 do not support Raid per Asrock, they said The Taichi has an AMD controller for 6 ports and does support RAID 0/1/10 for SSD SATA III arrays. (up to 6 drives). not a big deal if you are getting the NOVA strictly for NVME and not care for much for SATA III performance or RAID capability (AsMedia is slower controller vs the AMD one)

If lanes are shared the steal speed from each other . So if you chuck 4090 and m2 nvme in lane shared they will work at half speed

Hi there, yes unfortunately if you populate the second slot with most of the MB's except the Nova then you reduce the (slot) 1 x16 (lanes) Bandwidth at 32 GB/s transfer rate to 1 x8 (lanes) Bandwidth at 16GB/s (PCIe 4.0 = 4090) thus halving the data transfer rate from/to your 4090 - check some research on lane sharing between CPU / Chipset as all motherboards have different configurations when it comes to lane sharing - hope that helps 👍

Question: What is max no. displays (4K @ 60Hz) which can be connected to these X870E boards, to be driven from iGPU on 9900X? I understand all these boards have 1x HDMI and 2x USB 4 (supporting DP over USB). In principle, each USB 4 port could output to two 4K displays @ 60Hz (using an MST USB-C to dual DP adaptor). So I wonder whether it might be possible to drive FOUR, or even FIVE 4K @ 60Hz displays from the iGPU via X870E Mobo? (of course, another limitation is max no 4K @ 60Hz displays supported by 9900X iGPU itself, I heard this might be a max of FOUR, but unconfirmed?) I am planning new build using Ryzen 9900X and an X870E Mobo. Will not be used for gaming, for productivity only. I won’t install a discrete graphics card, will rely only on integrated graphics. I wonder if the answer is the SAME for all these X870E Mobos, or would some of them allow to connect more 4K displays than others?

Each USB4 port supports 2 monitors via daisychain. The monitors used must support daisychaining if wanting to drive more than one.

So....with the 870E Nova, if I put an M.2 drive in all slots, I'm not loosing anything? I'm still trying to wrap my head around all this new "lane sharing" this the 800's are doing here. Planning on installing 405 WD SN850X 2TB drives on my new board, 64GB 6000 Ram, and a XFX 7900 XTX Magnetic Air. Only thing I am holding on is a 9950X3D CPU

That is correct, its not stealing any performance from the graphics cards when running multiple SSD. I just got the Nova myself and I have no regrets, Personally the best motherboard for the price, plus I like the fact that it has so many SSD slots because I don't have to worry about running out of memory space for all my games

*Edit - This is referring to the Crosshair Hero* Sadly I hate to correct you about the shared lanes with this board but right from the manual "When M.2_3 is enabled, PCIEX16_1 will run x8 and PCIEX16_2 will run x4, M.2_2 will also be disabled.". I have this board on the way due to be delivered tomorrow. It's a little sad as the x670e (which I'm currently typing this on) doesn't have these sharing problems. As I plan on running two gen5 and one gen4 m.2's I'm going to have to use slots 1/2/4 to keep x16 on my gpu. Also I will not be able to use slot 3.

Check the livestream video I did "Tech Thursdays Ep 79". The Hero is discussed in great detail. In short, you can use M.2_2 and M.2_3 but the bottom x8 slot will be disabled. As soon as you use M.2_2 you disable the bottom slot. As soon as you use either M.2_2 or M.2_3 the GPU slot runs at x8.

Im confused does the Taichi share/split the GPU 16x lane when I have m.2. inserted in all the slots??? Im looking for Non sharing motherboard but it seems like all the 870E's do it in one way or another. I am willing to do a $500 motherboard but I honestly am just so confused which one to get so Im not compromising the GPU lanes and not spending over the amount into Xtreme/Hero/Godlike. MB that I thought I wanted was Taichi/Asrock Art/Aorus Master but I have no idea now :( if anyone can elaborate so I dont split lanes with the main GPU that hopefully will be a 5090/5080 24g cause lets be honest 16 gig 5080 can die in a fire if rumor be true.

None of the ASRock X870E share GPU lanes with any of the M.2 slots on the motherboard. The only other motherboard that is similar is the MSI Godlike.

Objective tests put Asrock boards on the last place. Memory speed support is a lot worse than on Asus and Gigabyte's Master board. Stability is also worse on the Asrocks (I had one of the most expensive Asrocks a few years ago and was a very unstable system. I replaced that board with Gigabyte's Master and that one worked like a champ. Asus boards are fine too but their value is not very good compared to Gigabyte or MSI boards. On this new generation the Strix has good features like the new DIMM socket design but the lack of a backplate is disappointing. I bought one anyway because the "nitro" memory path and slots is very important to me. Of course the Hero mdel has the backplate but the price is too much.

Right now I have the extremly expensive Crosshair X670E Extreme. Many people (myself included) facing the annoying 0d error when rebooting as soon as Armoury Crate is installed. Unfortunately the miniOLED display and the Matrix LED is complete worthless without Armoury Crate. At the moment I am looking at every single video regarding boards because I just want to have a good looking board without any annyoing issues. I was not aware that the Asrock Nova and Taichi are that good. But what would you guys do? Uninstall ASUS bloatware Armoury Crate and disable the displays or get a new board from a different vendor?

Thinking about selling my X670E Hero just because of that bloatware garbage armoury crate. The MB lighting polymo stuff cannot be controlled without it either. It’s really the worst software ever and i absolutely hate the fact that i’m forced to update every single thing when i open it up. Even my lighing is screwed up until i do so. And it uses way too much system resource to run.

What I can tell is that I also had issues with the x670e Taichi and that is what me wants to wait for the next x3d CPUs. So I can try the 9950x3d and replace my 7950x3d if that is working. All of them have auto fan speed adjustment based on temperature.

@@GameTechReviews thanks. The issue I foresee is micro-spiking in temps (for just a few secs) causing fans to ramp up and down over the same interval. The step-up/down speed directly addresses this to stop the micro-ramping effect, but the ‘workaround’ is to only let CPU fans increase when the it gets pretty hot. I think, anyway!
