This is a great example of how eye movement changes in response to alcohol impairment. The left test is on a sober person, and the right test is the same person while drunk. The tests are performed on the Gaize headset and is an automated Drug Recognition Expert eye examination. This video includes the following tests:
- Equal Tracking and Device Calibration
- Lack of Smooth Pursuit
- Distinct and Sustained Nystagmus at Maximum Deviation
- Onset of Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus Prior to 45 Degrees
- Vertical Gaze Nystagmus
- Lack of Convergence
- Pupillary Rebound Dilation

Hi 👋🏽 @@duckscitomaster1308 I believe the alcohol eyes jutt back and forth, quickly and slightly; while the sober eyes move smoothly 😍

You can see it in the left eyes (eye on right side of screen)- the impaired eyes sort of jerk slightly when they look all the way to the side. Look very closely around @ 2:20. It’s subtle but it is there!

What?! You have to look closely. When the person's eyes are all the way devated to the left or right, the intoxicated person's eyes jump/twitch while the sober person's do not. This is pretty mild though, I've seen it way worse in some drunk people.

They look the exact same to me 🤷🏽‍♀️...unless its the slight jerk in the eye? Is that ONLY caused by impairment though?

There are a number of subtle differences. The jerking you see is called nystagmus and is the most common. It's primarily caused by depressant drug impairment (like alcohol).

@@osukuru Because after smelling booze on your breath (which you can't cover up) this is a test that definitive and easy to train police on and there is no way for a drunk to fake it.

No, the jerking, or Nystagmus, is caused by a huge number of things (like simply being nearsighted)--alcohol only being one of them (and not even guaranteed). This is NOT any kind of indication if someone has been drinking, and honestly it shouldn't even be admissible as a legal test in court.

I think you have the tags mixed up the drunk ones on the left😳 I mean, it is really really difficult for the untrained eyed to pick up those subtle differences 😳 Thank you very much to every officer, and every trainer who goes through the intense training required to know the differences at a subtle glance! Officers can see those differences while talking to you before performing the test that’s what leads them to performing the test there must be hours and hours of training involved in this Thank you all for keep❤️‍🔥🇺🇸

Also, it doesn't take a genuis to spot a drunk person. Anyone can pick them out of a crowd. And not to mention the overwhelming smell of alcohol when a drunk driver rolls down their windows is a huge indicator lol. People cannot hide that they're drunk. And a cop logically cannot spot the jerky eye movement of an impaired driver just by talking to them. They have to have them focus on something and follow it with their eyes.

How do people not see the difference? The sober ones glide smooth side to side, up and down and in any direction. On the other hand the drunk eyes dont move smoothly, slightly jerk almost constantly and look like they're lagging.

Which means nothing. There are a number of reasons why someone might exhibit signs of Nystagmus, including simply being nearsighted. This, as a "test" of alcohol, is pretty much useless, as are field sobriety tests in general. They're mostly useless, as any number of things can cause people to fail them even when completely sober. Police aren't optometrists, and they're not qualified to test anyone on their medical ability to walk a line or balance. The only one that really matters is the blood or breathalyzer test, as that's the only way you can tell how much someone has been potentially drinking. People usually don't exhibit completely obvious signs unless they're very, very drunk (or a lightweight).
