Great content! Which is best for me? NEITHER! I'm concerned that both had issues! I'm in the market for a zoom to use with my Sony gear as I transition from Nikon DSLR to Sony mirrorless. I bought my Nikon glass in 2007 and haven't had a single issue - zero. After watching your vid, I'm going with the Sony glass - I don't need 3rd party gripes to miss a shot. Thanks bud!

Thanks Stefan for this great comparison and sharing of your long term experiences. Many people compare with a week of experience and hardly any variation in environments which can make or break the choice. I can say for years the Tamron has served me surprisingly well with great contrast, sharpness, af speed and af accuracy for photos. I like the 28mm angle of view but having that extra 4mm means I can avoid taking the 16-35 with me so thats why I will finally get the Sigma and as you keep the Tamron for its strengths in weight and size when that is essential. Also as a working pro having an excellent backup main lens will be great because repairing your one and only main is a nightmare as I've had with Panasonic/Olympus and Canon.

I ended up going with the Tamron. The Sigma is slightly better in a few areas where I didn't need slightly better - the optics are so close that I can barely tell the difference, the plastic build is still pretty solid, I don't need buttons and switches, and the lack of 24mm doesn't bother me. What was really important to me was the size, weight, and cost. The Tamron's size makes it more portable and easier to balance on a gimbal, which is actually what I ended up buying with the cash I saved.

I own the sigma as well and am having the dust issue since the very first week! It has been a major annoyance and so far Sigma Malaysia had given the response that it "doesn't affect image quality" and flat out denied any issue with the sealing! At least they are willing to give it a clean that at the expense of my time, energy and money...

I had the same experience with Tamron a couple of years ago. I had a 24-70 lens for my canon. When it was working it was a great lens but when the focusing problems started it was the worst. I had to send it back to tamron 5 times for focusing issues and each time they said they repaired the lens. Each time I tried it out I still had the same focusing problems. I even sent in sample photos taken with another 24 70 at the same F stop and settings to show how bad is was in focusing. Finally on the 6th time I send it back they finally just replaced the lens for me. Their customer service is the worst I have ever experienced.

I would probably miss those 4 mm a lot. Today I have an APS-C camera and a 16-55 lens, I use 16 mm more than any other focal lenght. If your lens is not wide enough it's nothing you can do about it, the 5 extra mm in the long end don't mean much. Still I like the size and price of the Tamron.

I haven't had a chance to use the Sigma much, but I had the Tamron 17-28 and 28-75 and found it to be a hassle to switch back and forth when the 28mm just wasn't quite wide enough when doing a little street photography. I've been using Sigma 24, 50, and 85 1.4 primes the past year and absolutely love Sigma's glass quality and look. Want to get into weddings next year and the 24-70 just seems like the perfect lens for that. Also wanted to add that I got the Sigma on sale from B&H last week for $899, so it was a no-brainer for me.

Thanks for the comment. This is exactly what I’ve been wrestling with then 17-28 + 28-70 for two light lenses or 24-70. My existing 24-70 I half my shots at either 24 or 70 more at the 70 but I feel like I’d miss that 24 to exaggerate subjects.

I'm in the process of purchasing a Sony a7iii and can only afford one lens at this time. I'd like to get something a little better than the kit lens Sony offers. At this time it's between the two you reviewed. I live in Alaska and my work takes me to many of the small communities and villages. Mostly I'm looking at documenting the people and life styles in these remote areas. I'm leaning to the Sigma. Is there another zoom lens I should consider in the same price range as either of these? Really like the video, thank you!

okay stefan, i had to do a thorough test for myself, i ordered both lenses and had them for the past weekend dust - the sigma and tamron were both fine, no dust issues, if any specs were on them, they were on both sharpness - the tamron is softer at the 75mm compared to the sigma at 70mm, the sigma was sharper in the corners as well color- the tamron rendered color with more red tones compared to the sigma. This was pleasant at first but in different lighting conditions, the tamron's color balance was hit or miss compared to the consistent sigma sigma just looked better in both photo and video in sharpness, performance and overall feel

Just two days ago picked up a new! Tamron for 550€ (regular price is around 700€+) and I'm happy (€ is always with tax included). The Sigma might have an edge in some things like buttons or sharpness, but the Tamron is already so sharp that it's almost to much for my taste when doing portrait. The lens flare and such is also preferred on the Tamron imo, because I actually like to have these in my image. The suppressed flare of the Sigma is often way more distracting than just having a confident, controlled flare and in this case sometimes even more than in the Tamron.

@tomirwinphoto
@tomirwinphoto 4 жыл бұрын
Had one and sent it back. F/6.3 is too slow on the long end for anything but bright light, it has an etched look with hard bokeh and lacks the “magic” of an f/2.8. The Tamron 70-18- f/2.8 delivers the look and performance I much prefer. Before it was released I used the Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 for Canon with a Sigma Canon-to-Sony MC-11 adapter.

You must be kidding. You are not doing a scientific test. You compare 24mm to 28mm, everyone knows its harder to get good results with wider lenses, they have more distortion, vignette and resolution. Same you compared 75mm to 70mm. I am an engineer. both are great. but theres no contest at all here and the extra dollars for the sigma is happily given. 24mm vs 28mm. definitely WAY more useable then the extra 5 on the long end. not sure whos the clown at tamron that decided people all of sudden need to go back to 1999 with that range. weve been using 24-70 for 15 years now. get with it. and 2 other critical things. 1-af/mf switch and 2 fn buttons. extremely important. I dont want to give up a fn button on my camera to switch to mf when tamron was a cheap bastard. and since both in the middle were the same and edges and bokeh favored sigma, there no contest here. build is better with sigma. I like tamron but more then happy to dish out the extra bucks for the sigma. and with 16-28 and 17-28 comparison, which would I buy. none of the 2. the answer easily goes to the sigma art 14-24 dg dn. no comparison. its really a phenominal lens. even besting 16-35 gm. do some research and see for yourself.
