I can read his lips and I could hear some words of him is like he’s whispering
@chelsey87375 жыл бұрын
Yeah this is really common especially from people who grew up in English-speaking households where they learned to speak English and their signing was more signed exact English (SEE) than true ASL. A lot of Deaf people who grow up in those situations are also prone to code switching which is when they change the grammar of their signing to be more english-based if somebody who doesn't sign or doesn't sign well approaches. It's almost entirely unconscious and sometimes they'll even say the words or partially say some of the words as a way to, again, unintentionally help the person that doesn't know sign. Im a first year deaf studies major so what I'm saying is just what I've learned, of course not everyone does this and I'm not an expert.

This makes sense! I dont sign but when I trained my dogs i used typical and gestures all the time, pointing when I said "go over there", or palm facing down when saying "lay down." And now sometimes when we have company over, if i just gesture to my dogs - so as not to interrupt out guest talking - the dogs understand what I mean.

I think a really good way to fix this problem (if you're determined to), is to install a variable noise-reactive light that flashes when it hits its limit. You could even plug it in with a power switch timer, so it powers on automatically after 10 PM. A red one would probably be best. So as the noise gets louder, the light gets more red. When it reaches a certain threshhold, it'd start flashing.
@annelyceimgrund68844 жыл бұрын
Not meaning to be offensive-honestly!-but even being deaf doesn’t mean we don’t need to be aware of what time it is before using power tools late at night. Just saying that I don’t think Ellen is being “ignorant” to run to the garage to quiet the screeching drill at 1 a.m. No one wants sleep-deprived, hostile neighbors, so it’s pretty important not to, like, mow at 6 a.m. or use a power saw at midnight or whatever. We had a neighbor once who didn’t even like our son to shoot hoops after 10 or so (not with friends, just alone). The pound-pound-pound of the dribbling kept him awake. Granted, a tad over-sensitive in our minds, but we did comply b/c the guy was otherwise very kind, he did have to work in the mornings, and we didn’t want tension. Besides, if it bothered him, maybe it bothered others, so hoops stopped at 10.🤷🏻♀️

I agree. My husband is deaf and is a contractor. He doesn't hear how loud he is, but just like anything else, when you KNOW it's a loud tool, or if dragging something is loud, courtesy says that when it gets late it's time to stop. I totally thought the same thing. It's completely understandable to not know when you're too loud if you're doing new or different, like not realizing the tv is too loud or dishes are clanging. That's also never going to bother a neighbor. But that particular drill must always be noisy. Just don't use power tools after 10. P.S. Does Ryan fix cars for a living or is just a hobby? He is obviously very passionate about it. I can't imagine doing anything other than sleep at 1am!!

How do you modify them (if at all) to make them understandable? Also, do you guys ever feel judged or like people are staring in public because you’re signing? And if so how do you deal with this? Love you guys!! ❤️
@cashakozlov31044 жыл бұрын
I'm hearing but sign a lot with my friends and whenever I/we are holding something, first as deaf culture its more appropriate to put the object down-similar to not talking with food in your mouth. but if you can't @ashtynX is right, you usually sign with the dominant hand. if you can still move the hand but not make hand shapes you just move the hand to the location for the sign and usually its still understandable. There isn't a huge amount of signs in ASL (different in other sign languages) that need both hands or else it doesnt make sense. if it is more complex statement and you need both hands to explain then you just have to put the object down. but many signs that use two hands the hands are mirroring each other so one hand is usually, although maybe awkward, adequate to get the point across.

i teach my one year old niece the signs ik and she can sign them accurately when she needs something and the few word she knows how to say verbally she signs at the same time! I’m so proud of her 😊

This isn’t the first video where I see you say you guys argue a lot, so it’s appreciated to see how honest you are. Because you guys look like a happy, perfect couple in your videos… But that’s not real, everyone fights. So even though you don’t show it, I appreciate that you advertise that it still happens, so people don’t have unrealistic expectations with relationships

Guys he can read her lips, so if she isn’t signing don’t get mad he’ll still understand what she’s saying

and some words have a similar pronunciation. i guess you can still tell what theyre saying by looking at the context but i imagine its still very hard to tell at times.

Their relationship is so cute 🥺💖 they get each other so well & look so comfortable around each other. It honestly warms my heart the effort they both make to be respectful & understand how the other feels when it comes to situations like these.. how she was saying that you’re used to hearing so if you hear a loud noise you assume everyone hears it... I felt that.

Most likely.. Deaf/deaf people are usually extremely aware of the hearing world.

That broke my heart when Ryan said that he was insecure about talking or making mouth sounds because he was bullied growing up, kids can be so cruel. I was teased growing up as well because I was different (gay) so I really felt that.

You guys are more open and communicative than most relationships I see. Not even in LITERAL communication. I just mean.. Like. You both seem so open and trusting of each other and that’s beautiful to see. I have a hard time opening up to people so seeing you both be honest and open with each other really hits home with me. Sorry I know this isn’t the topic of the video, I just really felt like sharing that with you both.

I have a deaf sister.she's 17.She's a total sweetheart.Never makes extra noise.But her voice is really strong.So when she laughs...sometimes it's really loud.Or when she does something like cooking,she makes noises.We just gently tell her to minimize her sound.Never say "Shhh".Cause she doesn't has the privilege to talk.it's a lot easier for us cause despite her age,she's really mature and never makes any problem for us.

I drive a private coach for a living. Had a group out called Rathskellar, from the DC school for the deaf. I was with them a few months on there tour. It was there first time in an entertainer type tour bus lol. I was not aware of the deaf world as much as I thought I was. I bought tablets, & pens, small dry erase board, etc.. did a lot of txting & tried to learn some basic communication (ASL). I feel bad now that I have not used any ASL in years, I have forgotten now. The group was great & all very patient with me, as I did care about them & there comfort. I would get asked if they were quiet & I had to smile. With different types of hearing loss from total to some hearing with aids. Some were silent when speaking some verbal some not aware of making noise or @ least how loud some things could be EX thumping on a counter. I learned. A lot & have a lot of respect for the deaf community. Great videos!

I’m curious, if you were to fall, or faint, or be short of breath to the point you can’t speak in another room where Ryan can’t see you, how would he know what’s happening? Like is there a way for him to know if something bad has happened in another room?
