Countdown to Dark Souls 2 - WEEK 1
Dark Souls Lore: Xanthous King Jeremiah
By request, we're covering one of the many kings of Dark Souls - and no, it's not the Sunlight King, nor is it the Undead King, nor even one of the Four Kings. That's right, you guessed it: the Xanthous King! We'll be trying to figure out just where he comes from, and why he was exiled to the Painted World.
Unfortunately, I don't know anywhere you can purchase your own Xanthous Crown - but I know the next best thing! A shirt!

I think I know why Jeremiah is in the painted world- Lord Gwyn went out to see a movie, and Jeremiah sat right in front of him. Gwyn got so angry he sealed him away.

Perhaps the reason his crown was so big is because it was covering an egg head (Somebody else mentioned this, and it is supported by the blood on the top being from puss or something). This may mean that he was trying to learn Chaos Pyromancy, and went so far as to get himself infected in the process in order to take lessons from Eingyi (He will not teach you unless you have an egg head). Eingyi was deemed a heretic and was exiled from the Great Swamp. So maybe Jeremiah was exiled once people learned that he was taking lessons from Eingyi (Which would be hard to hide given that Jeremiah has an egg head), and they did not want someone who respected a heretic to be their king, not to mention that he was probably persecuted due to having an egg head as well.

@Primalintent
@Primalintent 3 жыл бұрын
@@oddsoup6407 That may have been after Jeremiah. Especially since the Xanthous Scholar headpieces aren't identical. They have a flat top and more of a cone shape. Jeremiah's crown is bulbous and spherical at the top, and tapers way more dramatically than a Xanthous Scholar crown. As Silver Mont mentioned, Xanthous may not be a place but instead a label referencing his yellow garb. So the Xanthous Scholars might wear yellow and take the name for that reason.

There is a high chance that Xanthos King is the king of Lost Izalith, Husband to the Witch of Izalith and father to the sisters of chaos. The dude know chaos pyromancy & even has the same whip as the oldest daughter of chaos. His hat is probably not a decoration but in fact to hide the parasite that infect him, the shape which is oddly similar to Parasitic Wall Hugger in blight town which also near to where you can found a whip & pyromancy spell which Jeremiah equip. There are even theories that link Jeremiah to goddess Fina & maybe his betrayal that drive the witch of Izalith insane (lose control of the chaos flame). And as i mention earlier he is a king so the whip is probably to show status of control over the demons in Lost Izalith (the servant of chaos). its is stated that the chaos flame gave birth to demons and that the Witch consumed by it, but could it be that there was a time when the witch actually able to control the chaos flame, harnessing its power and producing demonic servant. The flame consume her and some of her daughter when she mentally weak (due to betrayal) and lose control of the flame. Jeremiah is also probably exiled to, hiding, trapped or even under a mission in the painted world (who knows). Most ppl would probably just think of him as a reference to demon souls but if you dig well enough there is really a lot of connection to be made.

Lunar Divider Right: Robert Chambers' book makes a vague reference to Hastur, which at the time was only related to the Egyptian cosmology. It was't until about twenty years later that Lovecraft, inspired by ' The King in Yellow,' used the character of Hastur in a much more sinister light. It wasn't until even later that the King in Yellow started to be associated with Hastur.

One theory is that Jeremiah is the student Quelana, Salaman. Acording to Quelana, salaman went mad (if i remember correctly) Maybe Salaman changed his name to Jeremiah and was sent to the Painted World for comiting some sort of crime. If he was her student, it would explain the chaos pyromancies. Maybe he even started to call himself king after being exiled, witch could be why his crown is so... special.

I believe that Jeremiah may be the Master Pyromancer Salaman that Quelaana of Izalith talks about. Salaman was a pupil of Quelaana, and she says that he made something of himself. Could it be possible that she trained Salaman, and after he left, he became a great king. Maybe he became so powerful in pyromancy that the gods were afraid of another duplication of the first flame incident? Just my thoughts.
@SilverMont
@SilverMont 10 жыл бұрын
I have always wondered about Salaman and Jeremiah, yeah. Even their names aren't all that different (if you compare them to real world names, I believe Salaman is close to Solomon, and both are Hebrew names I think) Maybe they are one and the same? Or perhaps they were brothers?
@jasonsouthern2823
@jasonsouthern2823 10 жыл бұрын
Looks like he is already a master of those pyromancies. The only person that teaches those types of spells is quelaana and quelaags sister. But maybe he did come from somewhere else and met up with them. And also i think possible on the brother thing, but again it seems like to master those pyros, you would have to learn from the witches. And quelaana didn't say she had two pupils (besides the chosen undead of course.)

I think Jeremiah contracted the egg parasite which got him exiled from his homeland and that perhaps he wears that giant head piece to cover it up, upon being exiled maybe he sought out Blight Town where there were others with his condition and then came to serve Quelanna in the chaos covenant which would explain how he got his chaos pyromancies. There's also an egg vermifuge (A cure to the egg parasite) on a corpse in the painted world which I think hints towards this idea a little.

I rewatched "True Detective" and because the series incorporates Rober. W. Chambers work "the King in Yellow" (and the lost city of "Carcosa") I instantly thought of this character. The entity in the short stories is called the "Yellow King". "Xantheous" is ancieny greek for yellow so the character is technically called the "Yellow King" in the game, and the painted world is kind of a lost city. H.P. Lovecraft (someones work we know Miyazaki is influenced by) drew influence from chambers and even incorporated the "Yellow King" in some of his work, togheter with the lost city of "Carcosa", a concept that Chambers also took from Pierce Ambrose and wrote about. It smells to me like this is a nod to that work, it correlates somewhat anyway. But who knows?

When Gwyn and his knights we're in Izalith they found him and later put him into the painted world.Vaati Vidya talked about this in one of his secret videos.

I don't think Jeremiah has been cast involuntarily into the painted world. I think he is a chaos servant searching for the art of lifedrain. The chaos pyromancies are from the covenant, he invades for humanity, he has the giant turban to theoretically cover up an enormous egghead (which, by design, may evolve into those giant creatures like the one in upper blighttown, given time), and you find his body next to Priscilla, who he was most likely trying to kill. But his weapons weren't equipped to fight dragons. I'm guessing, personality-wise this makes him passionate, aggressive, but not all that smart. Don't know what any of this says about his monarchy of origin, but I feel like he isn't a native to Blighttown or Lost Izaleth. His name is too foreign to the area, at least from the characters we've seen. I think he was just one king of many who hollowed and came to Lordran in exile. Probably from a Mountainous (Greek) or Desert (Hebrew) region. He then found purpose with the chaos covenant and saving the Fair Lady. Maybe to reclaim a sense of power, climbing the ranks? Maybe because he genuinely cares about her.

Yellow King Jeremiah. Wow. Well. First off: A while ago a man named Ambrose Bierce came up with a series of poems referring to the "Yellow King of Carcosa", who was an exile, and ultimately determined to come from a different dimension or solar system based on the landscape descriptions like "two moons" and the fact that Carcosa was in discription a mythical city not quite to be perceived as on top of a lake or behind it. These poems became so popular that they expanded into other author's work like Robert Chambers, which would eventually become the influence for the works of one H.P. Lovecraft. Essentially: Jeremiah is a reference to Cthulhu, his head wrap, of course, containing the tentacles. An exile from another universe that came to Lordran, which became Drangleic (thus an explanation for his name change to Dark King Jeremiah, because the obvious end of the Yellow King was to be inside the Abyss, as consumption of power only to have it taken from you in the end was a major theme of the character), in order to obtain the souls he needed to one day go home and reclaim his throne. However, once in Lordran and sucumbing to the cycle and becoming hollow, he forgot his original purpose, and held only onto the consumption of power, never remembering his application of it getting him back to his home.

+starkman yuval Yes, I just figured it was a callback to those stories since so much monster design was obviously... "borrowed" from Lovecraft in the series. They needed to slap a name together with it and chose one at random. I don't think there's anything to suggest more than that, really. The gods would find an avatar for an Old One from the "outside" a threat and toss him in the painted world, sure, why not. He probably came into the world wondering who stole his monster designs...

Just a little note on the salaman is Jeremiah theory. Salaman also means king, you know how dark souls seems to replace names with similar ones over time. Some kingdoms refer to the same gods by different names than the ones we are used to, this is hinted at with lautrec and some others. Maybe Jeremiah used to be referred to as salaman when quelana taught him the chaos arts. She seems to be the only one to have developed chaos pyro other than her sister at the bed of chaos door. It seems likely that only you and salaman are her direct pupils.

It's generally accepted that Jeremiah is a reference to the Old Monk from Demon's Souls. It's obvious because of the headwrapping. I wish they had given more information about him, though, as we aren't able to find out much with the items given. It's interesting that he uses pyromancy, but Soloman (or however it's spelled) did come to Quelana to learn pyromancy, so it doesn't necessarily mean he came from Izalith or anything. Nice video, I hadn't really thought about the Xanthous King in a while.

I had a real problem making sense of this guy when I first saw him, having not played Demon Souls. I assumed he was just a crazy pyromancer that took the magic too far and that pissed off the Gods. I thought he had a huge mutated mass under the head robe thing similar to the malformed poison hollows in that level. In fact I thought since they spat poison and fire that they were his followers and were exiled with him. Just a little lore for myself.

This might sound kinda crazy, but what are the odds that the painted world is some sort of deformed version of the Demon Souls world? I haven't ever played the game, but I have seen bits and pieces of it from lore videos like this one. The architecture of the Nexus (?) and Priscilla's tower look semi similar. If the old monk you mentioned was a leader in that world, then it could be a possible explanation as to how he may have ended up here

Demon's Souls and Dark Souls have no lore connection. The developers have stated it. You can interpret that however you want. It may look similar, but there's no connection except for maybe similar design.

+MikeMoose94 the painted world was a love letter to demon souls, along with the connections you mentioned, there is a hoard of blobs of red hollowed that carry large shields and spears seemingly protecting a statue. The first major boss in demon souls was a group of green slimes armed similarly, all protecting a large slime that could not protect itself. The developers loved demon souls and dedicated the painted world to it

I saw an interesting picture days ago, have you seen the weird demon in Blightown protecting a corpse in Blightown that helds Power Within? The picture compares Xanthous Crown with the head of the demon and it matches, that demon is the king consumed by the chaos flames so maybe he came from other place, Great Swamp king maybe? The power within is a pyromancy of Carmina, another really unknown charachter of Dark Souls, maybe Xanthous came with Carmina and other pyromancers, like the ones in the painted world, the engorged. But its all speculation, what you said in your vid, that he could be the king of Izalith, its pretty good to, because as you compare in Demons Souls, Latria was matriarchal, and the Old Monk was exiled and returned with demons in tow and the yellow robe, but as description says, the robe is the demons and it controls the owner, so maybe Jeremiah could have been exiled from Izalith?

I imagine it wouldn't be easy to give anyone "closure" regarding most things in Dark Souls lore seeing as so much of it is left open to speculation. Unless the game devs come right out and explain everything the only thing another person who is not a game dev could offer on those aspects of the lore is his own interpretation.

not sure if it's been mentioned before but the Xanthous set and/or the demon that takes the form of the set is possibly based on the book/fictional play The King In Yellow. I was watching this video in the hopes that you'd mention the connection, maybe you can look into it for a follow up for Dark Souls 2. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_King_in_Yellow The story is a precursor to Lovecraft, and Lovecraft himself was deeply inspired by the writing style. He even went as far as to incorporate The King In Yellow into his mythos. I find this really interesting and how this relates to the demon that resides in the Xanthous set, it's very unusual when compared to the general lore of the Souls series.

8:13 OMG that's genius. The mention of "one of Havels troops" made me think of this. Maybe Jeremiah was part of the occult rebellion? He wears equipment with high Curse and Magic defense, seaths two methods of attacking. He has a whip that causes bleeding and is effective against flesh. Who is the only scaleless dragon? Seath. And what is Seath weak too? Bleed and fire. So, Jeremiah is an assassin, whose task it is to kill Seath. And maybe the King part refers to him being the leader of the rebellion. If the gods killed him, he would end up as a martyr, so they banished him instead.
@SilverMont
@SilverMont 10 жыл бұрын
That's certainly another possible background for Jeremiah! It would make sense, given the curse/magic resistance and so forth. It might also explain his presence in the Painted World (perhaps as a guardian to Priscilla, herself having a possible connection with Seath) it's all speculation of course, but it makes some degree of sense!

Another character I have theories about! It's worth noting that Jeremiah is not the only pyromancer in the Painted World. There are several bloated, mutated hollows capable of it. Demon Souls reference aside, it's possible that the mutants represent what Jeremiah looks like beneath his crown. Here's the question: WHY are they bloated, mutated, and filled with poison? My theory is because they are afflicted with Blightpus. The Blighttown ailment which The Fair Lady supposedly cured at the cost of her health and eyesight. The fact that Jeremiah uses Chaos pyromancy cements this connection further. This brings us to the next question: Why was he exiled? I think your theory about him being the former king of Izalith holds some merit. We know from the Effigy Shield flavor text that there was once a plot to overthrow the gods. We also know that New Londo was a city of Undead, if the Crestfallen Warrior is to be believed. The four kings there allied themselves with Kaathe, also putting themselves in direct opposition with the gods. Four kings in a single city? Why not a fifth, I guess? In any case, clearly there were many groups unhappy with the rule of Anor Londo at one time or another. Did Jeremiah lead his pyromancers in one of these rebellions? It's also possible he went to Gwyn seeking help and was imprisoned for his troubles. EDIT: It just occurred to me. The three Sealers of New Londo. One of them perished in Blighttown. Yulva, who is named in the Remedy sorcery flavor text. She presumably abandoned her duties to try and cure the afflicted there. Why? Simple compassion? Or did this Sealer of New Londo have strong ties to Blighttown? The two locations are in fairly close proximity. If Jeremiah is indeed afflicted with Blightpus then it links him to Blighttown and possibly even New Londo.

ZotTheWise Yeah, it'd make sense - if you had a nasty bloat head, you'd probably want to cover it with a nice ass wrap! Which is covered with a few blood stains here and there, suggesting something could be going on underneath. Oozing juices.
@SunGhostify

He actually might be a king of Izalith, yes. But he could object the Witch's decision to link the Fire with the Chaos Flame, for that he was exiled. His objection could've been provoked by the consequences of linking the Chaos Flame. Cause he could be the Chaos servant and thus wanting to avenge a Fair Lady's mutation.
@wikkedblight

Someone on the Dark Souls reddit mentioned the possibility that the headwrap is possibly hiding a "lvl 3" parasitic egg. If you look at the top of the headwrap there is some blood seeping through. Even if it's not a parasitic egg and instead it's a chaos mutation it would seem as though there's something being hidden by the cloth.

I'd always thought Xanthous was a reference to "The King in Yellow," a story in the Cthulhu Mythos. It was the name of a cursed play, but it was also the name of an evil, otherworldly being, an Old One who cloaked itself in gold... or who was, in some interpretations, the golden cloak. Judging by the warped creatures in the Painted World, and Xanthous' "legendary" exile, I'd always believed he was a chaos practitioner/Abyss walker who'd been found out and forced into the Painted World. The fact that the Painted World doesn't look nearly as desolate from the outside, leads me to believe that Xanthous's corruption, and not Priscilla's presence, is the reason the World began to crumble from the inside out.

My own theory about Jeremiah is that he's a reference to the King In Yellow; a character of H.P. Lovecraft. With the already fairly Lovecraftian messed up corruption style that Dark Souls takes, it wouldn't surprise me if he falls under that category. Even the next games features stuff like that with the whole bit where Dranglaeic appearing to people in dreams; very similarly to Lovecraft's nightmare inducing worlds.

In Demon Souls, as many know, there is a boss called the old monk. He is the archdemon, so he is the lead demon. If you speak to the noble woman she tells you all about him as you said and everything. Since we can assume that the two games are connected because of the land of giants, and also the broken arch stone was, you guessed it, the land if the giants. So perhaps Jeremiah literally is the old monk being banished, and that his return broke the arch stone to the land if the giants. In the Tomb, there is one very arch stone-esque block that could suggest this. Just a theory.

(In terms of the Pyromancy) The way I see it, He was the old king of Izalith, and Izalith is a land that was famous for its mastery over the chaos pyromancy art, because of how close it was to the demons, but... then the witch OF IZALITH, learned them, devoted herself to them, to recreate the first flame... He was the king.. he HAS to know something to keep himself in power.. right?

Yeah, it's certainly something to consider, as we know at one point there WAS a King of Izalith in the game. IIRC, Bed of Chaos was originally called "Izalith King" (which might suggest that the Witch and the King fused together to become the Bed of Chaos?)
