UPDATE: I made this video BEFORE Scholar of the First Sin, which has fixed some of the problems I raised in this video - if you kill Licia, the NU will no longer invade. They haven't fixed the models though.

Well, the Crushed Eye Orb invades the worlds of "traitors". The only time you can use it is when near Licia. She attempted to usurp Vendrick somehow (Invades in Drangleic Castle and Undead Crypt, both places where Vendrick is known to hang around), got stopped somehow, and went into hiding as Licia. Seems logical.

That's interesting but I don't think that Lidia would do such a thing. I feel like she was actually hoping to usurp Nashandra by proving herself and fighting Vendrick. By doing so, she would usurp the throne of want and maybe start the dark age.

That's a fine idea, but how would that do anything for her? The only way to "prove" yourself to Nashandra is to open the Throne of Want and steal the Giant's Kinship from the Giant Lord. At least one of those things require killing Velstadt, who's clearly still kicking when you get to him. And I find it hard to believe she'd know about the Dragon Aerie at all to get the Ashen Mist Heart. There's too many steps she can't have conceivably done. As opposed to my simple "usurp the king" theory, all she has to do is kill the royal family. First she invades in Drangleic Castle, but the king is already gone. She then invades in the Undead Crypt, where the king currently resides, but Velstadt proves too much for her and she is repelled. From there, she takes on the name of Licia and waits for someone to do it for her.

BricksPicks if you get enough soul memory you can skip the having to light the primal fires to get to drangleic castle so it is possible to skip out most of the game just by doing that.

***** Embracing 4 Great Souls or a certain amount of SM triggers the door, not the primal bonfires. So you can also just for example kill the Lost Sinner 4 times in one playtrough to enter the castle.

Well, during my last playthrough of Dark Souls 2, I used the Crushed Eye Orb to go kill Licia right after I found it, and then never got invaded by the Nameless Usurper in the Crypt. So...

Silver Mont (in current patch as of 14 March 2015: Nameless Usurper no longer invades if Licia of Lindelt is killed (So far only tested after killing her at the first meeting location. Have not tested killing near Majula yet.) (Killed her in Majula, also prevented both Nameless Usurper invasions. So its very possible that the First Sin has basically said, she is the murderer who's on the run after stealing the miracles. She tries to kill you because she realizes you're on a direct path to the Lindelt sect beneath Drangleic castle OR you're traveling to Drangleic and may reveal her to them.

I liked the parallelism you established between Licia and Gilligan. The only thing I thought was a bit off were your speculations about the cut dialogue, since that sort of dialogue was supposed to be present with other NPCs as well.

I generally mention the cut dialogue if it adds anything interesting, but try to include it just for the sake of being thorough. Licia being locked up, for example - maybe she was locked up by Targray in the Cathedral, for the crime of having miracles on her persons that he believed she should not hold (which would explain why Targray also has a stolen miracle in his possession etc)

I really don't think The Usurper coming back after killing Licia proves anything. I mean, she's probably undead. Sure, there isn't precedent for phantoms invading after killing corporeal versions, but it still all makes perfect sense and works with no contradiction within the world's rules! Players, after all, just regular ol' people, can get killed adventuring, come back, invade, get killed, come back just fine. So long as they have some sense of purpose. Maybe Licia didn't feel too strongly about conning people with miracles, but was a bit more passionate about murdering people trying to claim the throne.

the fact she stills pops up after you kill her means little, as a lore guy, you should know time is convoluted in the dark souls franchise, you could still summon NPC's even after they had perished (Tarkus and the witch that "helps" against the four kings, anyone?). As for the rest, nice speculation and opinion, as that is all you can do with the souls series. personally, i'd still think it's her who invades, why else would you even be able to use the crushed eye orb specifically on her? Simple scamming is not enough of an offense to build up sin, and to become more powerful to use more powerful miracles, you need a more faith which is done by gaining more souls, so to that regard, yes i still believe those two are one and the same. Maybe, in her own time (assuming she's undead as well) Licia, as the NU, killed off others, gained massive strength in her faith (proving Licia's ridiculous WoG) but, just like all the others, forgot why she came to Drangleic, and simply turned to little scams, because she's forgotten her main purpose. Once you've obtained the crushed eye orb and invade her, even her dialogue line seems to indicate she knows she's been doing wrong by some account, and honestly, again, i don't think the scams are worth the trouble, but just like with Petrus, i believe it scratches the surface of the problem. They both scam, yes, but Petrus had a deeper secret, ultimately abandoning the maiden he was supposed to safeguard, so why doesn't Licia have this same kind of secret, where she invades others, to gain strength, in an attempt to take the throne, but because she's been sidetracking with the invasions, she forgot why she's doing it, but remains doing them regardless.

Do you remember who mentioned convoluted time? Solaire. It wasn't an excuse for people to come back to life after they were dead and "invade from the past." It was the logic by which the game explains your ability to summon other players. NO other invader who has a body form can invade when they are dead. Kill Chester's body and he won't invade. Kill Navlaan's body and he won't invade etc.And even disregarding that, how do you explain the different stats and different face and hair colours? Licia has brown hair, NU has white or blonde hair. And her "simple" scams are not simple at all. Lindelt is a highly religious land with strict doctrines. You aren't supposed to go around teaching miracles to anyone who hands you a few souls. On top of that, she stole sacred miracles associated with Gwynevere. Scam and fraud are not permissible crimes - I mentioned how in the Divine Comedy, fraud is one of the lowest circles of hell. Limbo, Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Anger, Heresy, Violence, Fraud and Treachery, each more terrible than the one that came before.NONE of Licia's dialogue hints towards ulterior motives, and Dark Souls does not have such amateur, shoddy writing that characters suddenly pull an 180 without any hints. Licia being the NU would be terrible writing, illogical from a lore perspective and is outright disproved by their different physical features.

right, and the fact you just repeated the lines, stated in your video tells me you barely took the time to actually read my message, If summoning can be explained through time convolution, why can't invading be done so? in it's basic form, it's the same thing. the phantom, regardless of intention towards the host, has the same properties. I even went as far as making up a point of your NU story with the fact that everybody seems to be losing their minds in Drangleic. As it is, why are NPC's different in their being then other players, why can't they have their own story lines playing out wrong and they end up losing to the curse of being undead? Licia might have just as well been invading WAY before your undead ass shows up, but by the time you meet her at Heide's, she lost her purpose, and like the cartographer, assumes she's there to teach miracles because that's all she knows ( and devious minds stay devious, a fox never loses it's tricks, or however that proverb goes). The fact she's lost her mind is a possible sign she's been there much longer then you, and if you take into consideration that every NPC's has his/her own world playing out, why can't she be ahead of you in time still invading? With this in mind, you as a player come back every time no matter what kills you, what if this happens to NPC's as well in their own respective world? Just stating something is BS because it's crappy design is BS in itself, Solaire's theory makes much more sense if you consider every NPC's as a possible predecessor in their own world who failed their quest, but was lured to Drangleic just like you, by the old lady. As a matter of fact, i think dropping Solaire's theory makes the game even harder to explain, considering the fact that certain NPC's are still up for summoning long after they died.

Let me put this simply to that little fanboy mind: Summoning signs do not require body, as summoning signs brings the soul of other person to your world In other hand, to invade, you need to activate eye orbs, which requires you to be alive. So if you kill Licia, she is not alive to activate the orb to invade. In other words: Sign does not require physical body to summon someone to aid, just their soul and sign are enough. Invading requires you to be alive so you can enter other peoples worlds. This is pretty much how the "convoluted timelines" works.

As a matter of fact, you are the first one to actually come up with a theory that might make sense if it weren't for the fact that, if you as a player die, your own sign disappears. Leaving the "no body needed" method kinda weak. Truth be told, i am anything BUT a fanboy of DS2, frankly i actually dislike it when compared to it's predecessor. But when something is stated as nonsense, you better start giving a statement about it that why it's nonsense or else you'll come across as senseless yourself. However, as stated before, your sign disappears when you die, so why doesn't this happen to NPC's? glaring oversight by the dev's maybe? Maybe,maybe not, but they are human, so flaws in the system are a possibility. Also, don't forget the brains behind the souls series didn't work on DS2, which might explain some flaws/sloppy design even more. (The elevator from earthen peak leading UP to a lava castle? yeah makes sense >.>) all in all, i was just putting in my perspective, as this is a lore video from someone else's perspective and opinion.

Kirk invades you when he's dead in your world. The Saint's Dress says outright that the outfit belongs to Licia, and I wouldn't put it past someone to pull out a knife when they're trying to kill someone. In addition, when you invade someone, you are very clearly going into another person's world to kill them. In addition, using the Crushed Eye Orb makes her say "Now I can kill you guilt free", which to me, REALLY implies she had tried to kill you before, but now you are the aggressor on her, so she can kill you guilt free. As Dark Souls 2 mercilessly beats into your head, you are the next monarch, and what does a usurper do? Kill monarchs. Keep in mind I'm only spitballing and making these up as I type.

Kirk isn't dead, though. Technically, you only find his corpse after all three invasions have been completed, that's when you can get his items from that body. And you can never actually talk to Kirk. But with Navlaan and Chester, fi you kill their human bodies, they won't be able to invade you after that. The dress says it belongs to Licia, but it also says that it's "worn by clerics" - it's like saying my pair of jeans belong to me. That doesn't mean I'm the only person in the world to have a pair of jeans, you know?Likewise, if she was so worried about the guilt, why would she try to invade us twice? Especially as we were a good income of easy souls for her. From her perspective, us finding out about her crimes just means she has the perfect excuse to kill us in self-defence.

John Kramer It says in one page of the strategy guide "Nameless Usurper (Licia of Lindelt) which is about as close to an official confirmation as you'd get, but I'm pretty sure that's just one of the many errors in the guide. It's still a decent guide, at any rate. But it does have some uh... obvious errors and typos.

John Kramer No it doesn't? If anything, it implies the exact opposite. If she was worried about guilt, she wouldn't have tried TWICE to kill you. If she was trying to conceal her identity, she wouldn't wear the distinct clothes of a Lindelt cleric. She also has different stats, a different face and different hair. There's no way all of these things are dev oversights. The only real link between them is the fact they are wearing the same clothes... which means nothing, because Ricard and Oscar wore the same set, even though it states on it that it belongs to Oscar.

We meet Oscar in the Asylum (Knight of the Asylum) and then later we find his armour in the Valley of Drakes, and then shortly after we fight Ricard in Sen's, who has the exact same armour. Licia's set doesn't state that it's unique to her, rather that it's a common uniform amongst clerics. But Oscar? "Armor of a nameless knight, perhaps an elite knight of Astora, based on the fire-warding heraldic symbol on it's blue surcoat.Although he was loath to give up on his Undead mission, he perished at the Undead Asylum, and went Hollow." That outright states that it belonged to him, and yet we find it in a completely unrelated location, and then we also fight Ricard who is wearing the same set. So why aren't people saying that Ricard = Oscar who just pops up in Sen's because of "timelines" that makes more sense that NU being Licia, to be frank.

Dark Souls III went a bit nuts in regards to certain things yeah. Originally at least though, the logic was that if you die in phantom form, you go back to your world. If you die in "human" or body form, then you are goneskies.

MatouAndBros Hard to say! It's something to do with punishing the guilty, right? There were items like that in the first game - one to invade Lautrec and one to invade Shiva (cut from the game) Just why we found one in the Crypt though, I'm not sure. There IS a lot of punishment going on down there - lots of the enemies there were killed by the wardens and punished by being brought back to life and set as guardsmen. Maybe that's why.

So first WOAH SALTY MONT? What is happening with KZbinrs at the moment? The other day Vaati was getting salty in his video, now Silver's getting salty in his. Calm down, Dark Souls community. Anyway I agree with you on the theory that she's a scam artist. I think her "Wrath of the Gods" is a cheap trick. It's physical damage, so it has no ties to a Holy nature. Wrath of the Gods is also the only spell I can think of which has a direct tie to the Gods. It is quite literally, the Wrath of the Gods. Great Heal, Lightning Spear, Blinding Bolt, all that stuff, are just stories. A cleric "chants" (as FromSoft puts it) miracles by reciting Holy Verses. Also, Licia doesn't Praise the Sun when she casts it, she only uses one hand. That might be a minor thing to you, but when you cast it, you praise the fuck outta that Sun. She doesn't chant the miracle in the proper manner.

According to them, Licia dyes her hair, uses a Soul Vessel to lower her Vigor, Attunement, and Faith, uses a shit tonne of anti-aging cream, puts on twice the eyeliner, sharpens the good old Bandit Knife which isn't on her person usually, doesn't bother to change her clothes when she's trying to conceal her identity...? Also, she can somehow invade you from the afterlife? I believe Licia is human, she has a set goal, and doesn't show any signs of hollowing - physically or metaphysically. I don't believe she's branded by the Sign, either. So, as a ghost or something, Licia invades you? Also, how does she know exactly where you are in your world? She also gets all the way there in her world somehow? Which is tied to your world but not your world somehow...? On top of that, she follows you all the way past Drangleic Castle, to the Crypts? But for some reason, whenever you go back to talk to her, she's there before you are? I just don't understand the logic of her invading you. Unless there's something in the DLC which straight up explains literally everything, I don't believe Licia is the Usurper. Even if that DLC thing happens, I'll still be a bit iffy about it.

I doubt he is Ornstein still, I think he is one of the remnants of Ornstien's Dragon Slayer group. I like to think he was a prodigy, a prodigy mainly because he is still alive after all this time for one as well as then being able to mimic Ornstien's techniques but while using the dark. I also think that all the Dragon Slayers' spears could manipulate lighting by a mechanical design, I think all dragons in DS1 were weak to Lighting. It would make sense to have it so that all of them would have a secret weapon against them. It could also be an automation created by Vendirck simply designed to look like the legendary knight. Vendrick did combine the kingdoms together he may have given some "Assets" to Hiede. Great Video by the way Silver Mont.

I was talking about Petrus, yeah. And the dark side to him... well, I'll try and summarise: He sells us miracles (which he's not meant to do) in exchange for a few souls. He accepts bribes. He abandons his companions. He implies that he would like to take advantage of Rhea. It is also strongly implicated that he will murder her - if you leave her alive in the church, she will be killed. If you leave her there, but kill him, she will survive and move area.

Collin Mac Well, I go through a few stages and I break it up so I don't do it all at once. First things first, I write up the script and do any research if needs be (looking up item descriptions in the strategy guide, in the wiki and in the game, to compare all three) and then I record any gameplay if I need it (although sometimes I use gameplay from my playthroughs if I can't get to that point in the game easily) like for this video, I changed my Faith user to a female and dressed him up in Licia's clothes to get some footage. Then I record the dialogue and edit it all together, then I render it, upload it and do all the metadata.

Well, there are NPCs with "bodies" and ones without. Good example - Solaire and Leeroy. You can summon both of them, but only Solaire has a "body" in which you can speak to him and you can kill him, if you want. If you kill an NPC with a body, they are removed from that playthrough permanently. If you kill Solaire, you can no longer summon him, if you kill Chester before he invades, he won't invade, if you kill Navlaan, etc etc. Kirk and Leeroy are where the convoluted timeline CAN come into play. They most likely aren't in Lordran at the same time we are, compared to Solaire who actually is. That's how I see it.And even without that, there's the different physical features to crown the cake, haha. I doubt Licia dyes her hair just to invade us.

They fixed most of my problems with it, so I don't really have an issue with it anymore. She broke in-universe rules by showing up despite being killed. Of course, they didn't fix that she has a different model but that's a little easier to overlook as they use generic models a lot.

***** Well, there's a fundamental difference between the two; Tarkus has no "physical" presence in your world. Sure, there's A body with his items on, but there's also a body in the Valley of Drakes with Oscar's items on, when we KNOW that isn't his body. We can't talk to Tarkus and we never see him. Licia we can speak to and physically interact with. Much like Solaire.And if someone has a physical presence in your world, and you kill them, that ALWAYS removes them from the game permanently. Licia, Benhart, Solaire, Lucatiel, Siegmeyer, etc etc.

I feel like if it says that Licia is the NU in the Official Guide then it is likely to be true. However, the person writing that article (possibly ENB) could have seen that NU was dressed the same as Licia and concluded that they are the same. I'm really glad that you acknowledge that 'convoluted time' is not an argument for any part of the lore in Dark Souls. It just exists as a throwaway explanation for how multiplayer fits into the Dark Souls universe.

Well, for starters they are in the Abyss, which is a strange dimension. And as for why we see those characters there... to be honest, I think it was just as a reference to the first game. Their armour sets are in the game, so they just tossed them in as tough enemies as an easter egg.

hmm its weird that you say NU invades after you kill licia. Because in my first playthrough i killed licia to access huntsman's copse. This was before the patch that made armana easier. I remeber because in drangleic i kept reading messages saying be wary of dark spirit and thought it was weird because i wasn't invaded, i took it to mean that maybe drangleic was a hotspot. Same thing for undead crypt. However on newgame plus on same character i did not kill licia and was invaded by NU. Again i passed it off thinking it was just a newgame plus change. I think im going to uninstall my system cache and do another playthrough offline were i kill licia and see what happens. Because if from changed things that can be critical to lore im going to be kinda upset.

Thing I have to note in terms of comparisons to stats and appearance. The Nameless Usurper and Licia ai for both forms are entirely different. The Nameless Usurper being a basic player npc character, while Licia has model and animations much like many other talk-able npcs in the game. So stats and appearance comparisons can only go so far. Though if they were meant to be the same character, whether this was a weird intention to throw off players or just a major mistake (Which from implications I'm willing to assume the latter) is unknown.

Silver Mont Definitely the whole body. A unique model that can't be replicated with the character creator and unique animations. Pretty much comparable to any mob in the game. It's why her armor can't be removed, same for all other non player npcs in the game with unique models. For convenience sake I'll only list the ones that could be confused for player npcs. Those characters being Benhart, Lucatiel, Navlaan, Pate, Creighton, Straid, Agdayne, Licia, Cale, Felkin, Drommond, Targray, and Wellagor. That leaves Rosabeth, Carhillion, Magerold, Saulden, Maughlin, and Cromwell. Those six are the only npcs besides the phantoms and invaders in the game using the same customizable model that the player uses.

What "gods" are being referenced by Licia? I noticed Petrus and Rhea saying something similar in Dark Souls, but what gods would they be? I thought that everything began with dragons then followed the events of the Four Lords. What history goes further back than the dragons?

SwollenEize I think it's a kind of Greek style thing. The dragons are the titans, then Gwyn is Zeus who did away with them etc (although Gwyn is not descended from the dragons) and the "gods" are just very powerful beings, not omnipotent creators of the universe etc.

Silver Mont Agreed, but I don't think Gwyn and the other Lords are really the gods they talk about. The game is careful to call Gwyn, Nito, and the Witch of Izalith "Lords," not "gods." Velka is a god. The flame dude that Gwynevere ran off with is a god. Allfather Lloyd, whoever he is, is presumably a god. The gods are some other order of beings that we never really learn much about.

SwollenEize Yeah, it says in an item description that the Way of White considers Allfather Lloyd to be Gwyn's uncle, but it's not clear to me how weird primordial hollows (which is what Gwyn and the other Lords apparently were before they found Lord souls, judging by the opening cinematic of DS1) could have uncles. The "Allfather" part also implies to me that the Way of White considers Allfather Lloyd to be some kind of creator god or at least the head of some kind of cosmic dynasty. The famous "Allfather" god in the real world is Odin, who was considered the Allfather of the Norse pantheon. If Gwyn is just the "nephew" of Lloyd, that implies that he's not a part of Lloyd's immediate family of gods. We also have no reason to think that Allfather Lloyd, Velka, or the flame god have Lord souls, which implies that they are some other kind of being.

Time must be convoluted. At least in Dark Souls One, if you lost an NPC early, s/he would not be able to be summoned for help. If you kill an invader it seems to be the same result. Not 100% sure about this, but with the convoluted time, if one NPC dies early, s/he does not respawm. Does Licia have any parallels to any other Dark Souls (one or two) character, where if s/he dies, no more spawns appear?? Curiosity sake, not totally sure myself.

Lucia is the usurper. Go to her, make sure you equip the 'cracked eye orb'. This is a side quest. You will get her armor, miracle and other stuff.

From what I've heard Nameless Usurper was the stand-in name for invaders during the production of the game. They just left it in for some invasions or some slipped through the cracks. The strategy guide entry could be one of those mistakes.

1stBadFriend I heard something similar, about "Nameless Usurper" being a generic title for invaders, I just can't remember WHERE I heard it, so I didn't mention it in the video in case I imagined it haha

I always believe that nu hunted Lucia because she was fraimed because they looked like her and she thought you were hiding her
