How similar is Serbian to Polish? In today’s language challenge, we will compare some of the similarities between these two Slavic languages, with Eliza, a Polish speaker from Poland, and Boris, a Serbian speaker from Serbia, challenging each other with a list of words and sentences. Polish is classified as a West Slavic Lechitic language, while Serbian is South Slavic along with some of the other languages spoken in the Balkans.

Serbian (српски / srpski) is the official language of Serbia and one of the official languages of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is also spoken by the majority of people in Montenegro. Serbian is also recognized as a minority language in Croatia, Macedonia, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic. After Russia, Ukraine and Poland are the second and third largest Slavic countries, and hence have the highest number of Slavic speakers, after Russian speakers. The Polish language (język polski, polszczyzna) is a West Slavic language, is the native language of the Poles and is spoken primarily in Poland where it has official status, along with the European Union. The Polish alphabet contains 9 additions to the letters of the basic Latin script (ą, ć, ę, ł, ń, ó, ś, ź, ż). Polish is closely related to Kashubian, Silesian, Upper Sorbian, Lower Sorbian, Czech and Slovak. Historically, Polish began to emerge as a distinct language around the 10th century which largely triggered the establishment of the Polish state. In addition to Poland, the Polish language is native to Slovakia, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, central-western Lithuania, bordering regions of western Ukraine and western Belarus, Romania, Moldova. It is recognized as a minority language in Czech Republic, Hungary, Lithuania, Slovakia, and Ukraine.
Slavic languages in general share a lot in common. They are thought to descend from a proto-language called Proto-Slavic, descending from earlier Proto-Balto-Slavic language. There are over 20 different Slavic languages, divided into 3 major subgroups, with Russian, Belarusian and Ukrainian belonging to the East group, Polish, Czech and Slovak to the West group, and Slovene, Serbo-Croatian, Macedonian and Bulgarian to the South group.

You should know that the only diference between Croatian and Serbian is the word "E".In Croatia we read it "Je",and in Serbia they read it"E".Croatian,Serbian,Bosnian and Montenegrian aren't different languages they are the same.

That's the main problem with understanding similar languages. As with anything in life it depends on the person and whether his/her brain is willing to process the information in order to understand it. I personally find Slavic languages fascinating so I can understand all of them (when speaking slowly and separating words) just by knowing one Slavic language (Russian) , other people will not care enough to try and understand Slavic sentences unless it is sounds almost exactly the same as in their language.

I am from Poland and it's amazing for me how much Serbian and Polish languages are similar. May be even more than our closest neighbors: Czech R. and Slovakia (in fact I more often had the chance listening to Czechs than Slovakians). I have never been to Serbian Kosovo, it's a pity.

Robertosław Iksiński Yes, you know for any person the native language seems to be very easy. It's why I asked to compare Polish & Czech languages and Polish and Slovakian languages. I know for sure that in X century and may be later let's say XIV cent. Polish & Czech language sounded as exactly the same languge. The proof was that Polish King Mieszko I married Czech Queen Dubrava, so they could speak & understand each other ! Later our languages gradually differantiated, but they must still be similar. It would be logical. So we must suggest this channel author' such a comparison of similarity. Regards!

"ovaj svet je veliki" sounds very clear to me because in Polish it could be translated as "ów/owy świat jest wielki, but I know some words from Serbian and how the words evolved there from Protoslavic. Moreover, in Polish we wouldn't really use "ów/owy" in this case("ten świat jest wielki" instead) so it's understandable that she had some trouble understanding it. Plus it clearly was her first time hearing Serbian language. Pozdrawiam Serbów i inych Słowian :)

Really now i studied in Novi Sad for 4 years and when i played a few old Komite songs sung in old Serbian that is now "Macedonian" they literaly did not understand the whole thing. Macedonian is the best example of how people spoke before Vuk's reform where his Hercegovian dialect became standard the one we speak today. And remember medieval Serbs and Bulgarians had language differences like todays Serbia and Croatia i was kinda shocked when i found that out but then again also not. Bulgars are a Turkic tribe of Nomads who conquered the Slavic lands of todays Bulgaria then they integrated and that same language continued to be in use. Then look that south Slavs came down from central europe from White Serbia and White Croatia and other tribes also and the old White Serbia and White Croatia were neighbours so its natural that they spoke also a very similar language but as times goes on so do linguistics. Try speaking South Serbian with a Northern Serbian or Luzic Serb if you use old words you will understand each other and that means no foreign loan words just proven Slavic words and even that you would have to do slowly as our different dialects have different speeds and movements of body.

I am not saying nor have I written anywhere that almost all/or great majority of polish people agree with every decision the main government make, that is unrealistic so i would never come to that conclusion. its funny for me because its ironic "the whole slavic brothers, we love serbians, love from Poland, kosovo is serbia" yet Poland were the first to recognize Kosovo, and also Kosovo is a losing battle, its considered a fantasy at this point to think it belongs to Serbia. I dont believe when you say "most polish people dont recognize Kosovo".. do you think the average Polish person give two shits about Kosovo and Serbia.. have you also done a nationwide census by any chance?

@piotrhobbysta5614
@piotrhobbysta5614 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, it would be very interesting. Cause there are different hypothesis about roots of Hungarian language. IMHO the 2 languages have nothing in common. Recent researches of haplogroup R1A1 (Aryans/Sarmats) showed that it's most concentrated in Poland , ethnic Persians/Iranians, India (but only Brahmins) and ... in Hungary! So there is also hypothesis that Hungarian language could be their language could have been imposed by some tribes in the distant past. In addition, there are similarities in the history of both countries: a common border, sometimes common rulers (Kings, Queens), bravery (feature of Sarmatian peoples or Aryans) and love of freedom (throughout the history written Hungary and Poland were allies, friends, as the only countries (except Czechs in 1968) fought against communism, at the same time 1956 in Poland and Hungary 2 risings against communists broke out, very bloodily suppressed by the Soviets, especially in Hungary where they drove in. After the Battle of Vienna, King Jan III Sobieski went with a part of the army to The Kingdom of Hungary to help fight with occupants. In 1920 during the soviet invasion of Poland, Hungarians sent the Poles - as the only country - missing the rifle ammunition. Thanks to this help Poland did win the soviet-Poland war, what saved whole the Europe from spreading communism, such was the goal of Lenin and Stalin. In 1956 after the bloodily suppressed uprising in Hungary, the Poles massively (despite communists) gave blood and sent on Hungary. There are many more such facts There are no two countries in Europe so strongly connected IMO. I know that we Poles can always count on the brothers Hungarians, and the Hungarians can always count on us Poles! Therefore, this hypothesis about language and a common haplogroup (slightly smaller in% than in Poland, but this may be the result of occupation in the distant past) is additionally supported by history. That's why I support your idea because it would be an interesting experiment of the so-called similarity. groups of Finno-Ugric languages. Regards! :)

I know reseraches of DNA of Poles, Russians (rather small part), UUkrainians, Belarus and Hungary and countries on the west from Poland. So I will research haplogroup status of Finnland :) I like Finns but pls remember that Serbians live far away from Poland and their languages are very similar. Until about XIV century Polish and Czech languages were identical, so the suggested experiment Finnland and Hungarian languages will be very interesting experiment, neverthels of what says us DNA :) Regards

Thank you very much for doing these kind of videos! I've learned a lot about other languages. This one wasn't that hard to understand, 'cause I'm Slovak 😊 only one word was trouble to understand (the serbian translation of "this" in the sentence : This world is big. Much love from Slovakia 🇸🇰 stay safe and healthy!

I didn't know how much simmilar our languages are until i didn't started working at hotel in Malta, where we have a lot of Polish guests. Usually older people don't speak english, so they speak in Polish and i am speaking Serbian and we understand each other easily.
