For anyone saying “that’s not how you do it”. He isn’t stating this is the God given way to repair holes nor is he telling you how to do your job. He is presenting a very good way of patching holes. Use his tutorial as is, modify to fit your needs or do it as you’ve always done it. No one’s forcing you.

I think it’s a great method and far better than how most do it. That whole trade around the edge is ugly but this method where the tape goes under and comes out the edges is much better.

Hey Ben, thanks for this quick demo! I used this trick to patch a small hole in plaster over gypsum in my house, it's about an inch thick and explodes into dust with pressure -- rendering screws impossible to use. Really learning tons from your videos, keep it up you're helping us DIY'ers same a ton money and time!

Hey boss, my wife and I just bought a house in 2020, and we knew going in that the walls were going to be a point of consternation. I've been watching your videos over the past couple weeks, and I honestly feel like I've taken a class. I'm walking around now looking at everything and saying "yup, that's a pretty terrible cornering job" etc. You've given me a lot of confidence that I can do these repairs on my own and save ourselves a ton of money. Thank you for sharing what you know.

So first off, thank you for these videos. I watched em for years over and over again and I finally got my first house, and I'm rebuilding it myself. First time doing carpentry too. Your videos helped. Also I had three drywallers fubar my house. And I know it's WRONG. because I did it your way and it worked. Hopefully...I'll find out tomorrow. Could be my fault since I'm new to mudding. YOU MAKE IT LOOK EASY!!! I struggle doing old outlets near corners or a foot off the floor. So my passes are sloppy and the ends of the mesh tape get straggly in the mud..so I still suck at it. But the 3 different mudders, mudding the surrounding area, then used paper tape over the outlet hole and then mudded with joint compound mixed with ez90 powder. I saw him mix that and I was confused. Next day. Mud cracked from shrinking. The other drywall guy left all the bumps on the walls and tried floating it with mud. So I got humps on it. I sanded it down and cutout the imperfections and mudded it with ez90 and warm water. No joint compound. The last guy used pink stuff to mix with joint compound and he globbed it everywhere and floated my walls out like big balloons. Overkill and lack of skill. I watch your videos BECAUSE every project you do is clean and methodical. These guys were animals. And I understand floating a wall. But not to hide all the corner beads and paper tape that's peeling up. So long story short. Thank you for documenting the process that I wish I did myself earlier and saved $2500 for 10 days of 3 shtheads who told me "I been doing this all my life"....one thing to say it. Another to show it. You my friend show your skill. I appreciate you!!

Funny thing I came up with this same method on my own. Only difference is you added mesh on top where I only used mesh on the back brace. I didn't know about the California patch so that was totally new to me. These are great methods for areas that you don't want to go from stud to stud or leave extra wood on the wall.

I use a method an old timer taught me, he called it a "hot patch". I cut a scrap of drywall down to size plus 1-2 inches in each direction. Then I turn the scrap over so I am looking at the back of it and I then cut through just the back paper edge to edge, a little smaller than the size of the hole. The cut lines will look like a # pound sign. Then I snap the drywall and peel the excess off starting from the center out. This leaves the front paper as a flap only still attached to my patch piece. Then I smear some quickset around the back edge of of the patch where the drywall ends and the flap begins. This mud will fill in the gap behind the flap and bond to the edges of the hole. Then just insert the patch into the hole after smearing mud around the hole on the surface of the wall enough to adhere the flaps. Smooth off the excess and feather edges. Let dry and proceed to next coat of mud like any other patch.

I put that I grabbed put some water in it and it was a dark, dark gray yours was white. A lot of work. Just cut your drywall piece to "pressure fit" and throw some mesh tape on the seams. Takes some practice estimating measurements that will fit with a tiny bit of friction, but it can be even faster than California Patches. Works generally on pieces smaller than 8"x8".

Are both pieces of the mesh tape on the outside of the wall/on same side of the patch? I can't tell if one of them goes with sticky side against the wall and then behind the patch and back out the other side. I tried with both on the pieces of tape on the outside and the patch seemed to cave in a little so I ripped the whole thing out thinking it would fall through with nothing behind it.

He used 2 pieces of tape on the back of the drywall where the sticky side is, he made it like a plus sign ➕. Then he put some of the quick set also on the back of the drywall on top of the mess, on the side that is going inside the wall. Then he put more tape on top of the drywall followed by the quick set. So tape on both sides! I know this comment was 3 years ago but I hope it helps anyone else that is confused!!

most electrical boxes are just held on by nails and you can quickly take a sawzall and cut right through them without damaging the drywall anyway, then the box can be pushed down into the wall

Multitool works great too, a little more weildly for a small job like this.

If you took the time to watch all 6 minutes and 25 seconds of the video, you would understand why he did it this way. Do you think that you're teaching him something? He knows how to cut out a box.

@@AJohnsonJr Obviously he knows how to cut out a box, but someone watching the video might not, and since that is the most professional way to do this repair it is worth mentioning.

@@jayjayhooksch1 For the people who do not know how to cut out a box, this video is perfect. The most professional way to do a repair is to get a professional. If you had watched the whole video, he explains why he would do a repair like this. He also explains that people just might want to do it this way.

@@AJohnsonJr except it's not because this is not the most professional way to do this. I would know, I'm a professional, that's why I took the time to comment.

Does the tape go entirely on the outside of the patch or around the patch?
