As an author I respect how you help protect artists of coloring books. People who create for a living deserve to earn fairly from their work. Thank you.

You're VERY welcome! I'm a writer (that's what I do for a living) so trust me.. I really do get it. It sucks when people don't give you credit or take something from you. That's part of why it's important to me. :)

I applaud your integrity about insiting on crediting the artist and publisher of images posted to your group. Not only is it “safe”, but it is teaching the next generation to respect originators of art.

I'm a Polychromos girl myself but you are so RIGHT about all of us having different opinions. We are all searching for the happy place and good for all of those who have (and are still enjoying the searching journey). We should for sure SUPPORT each other on our quest. Exactly like life. I don't like trash talk either. Art is so subjective. YOU ARE NOT RAMBLING. What you said is true and needs to be voiced. I know that this video is 5 years old as I write this comment but it is still as true today as it was then. Thanks so much for this video. So much good and true information.👍🏻❤

Hi Erin. You have a really nice channel. I enjoy listening to it in the background when coloring etc. So here is my opinion....I think what is really pathetic is that so many people jumped on the band wagon and bought coloring books and pencils, then got bored because they realize that it takes time and patience and that there is no instant gratification. In this day and age there are many people who were born after 1995 that need instant gratification because of the invention of the internet and the smart phone. If something can not hold their attention long enough then it is not worth it to them. It is really sad when one thinks about that. KZbin is great for learning and listening to in the background. People need to know how to pick up a pencil and communicate or create and not rely solely on technology for the answers. If the planet ever lost power temporally for what ever reason, a lot of young people would be completely lost and have no idea what to do.

I have been coloring for awhile now. I color everyday if only for 5-10 minutes. I am just now finding my style and its different from most colortubers i watch, but watching all of you has helped me find my style. I'm really happy with where my coloring is going now. Great video! When you were saying "don't take my word for it" I was so waiting for you to start singing the Reading Rainbow song :) Haha. I remember when I just started out coloring I used markers and gel pens, thinking I would NEVER be able to do all the shading and blending you need to do with pencils. Also I really enjoy your videos. I also love watching channels like Chris Cheng but I these types of channels for me are only good for inspiration and can't really answer my questions lol. I think those who are in disagreement have a right to disagree and make their opinions known, too. I'll respect that. It bothers me more when people truly expect me to change my entire way of doing things because they don't like it. Sorry, but that's not happening. :) I enjoy it this way and I always said if it ever started feeling like work, I wouldn't do it anymore. I also agree with you that people should never feel intimidated. We don't feel intimidated to cook for our families dinner because there are great chefs, and we don't avoid taking pictures of our kids because there are great photographers. We do these things anyway because we want to, and because it brings us happiness. Coloring should be no different. Thank you, May!

Love your channel! It's so helpful! Here is my own advice: My art, My World! Fancy art supplies are only as good as the artist. I'm never going to be famous. I color and paint because it makes Me happy. I have a set of Soucolor (180 different colors on Amazon for about $30), plus I still use Crayola, Roseart pencils, and metallic and neon sets I got from 5 Below (and gel pens also from 5 Below.) and I'm happy! In my own opinion (which is the only one that matters) is that I do a great job! It makes me happy, calms my stress, and helps with my ADD. That said, I do appreciate tips, techniques constructive criticism to advance my skill. I have synesthesia (a great side effect of my Autism) so I can physically and emotionally feel colors. So art makes me happy, which is the entire point of why everyone is here. Be brave, experiment, use color combos you wouldn't normally, color outside the lines, and get crazy with it. Don't worry about all the rest because it will all come together naturally. 😜 That's just my opinion. Thanks for reading.

I take the term "professional" as meaning that someone has spent a long time perfecting their craft, whatever that might be. It is very rare when someone starts out something new that they will excel at it. Of course, not everyone has the same level of abilities as everyone else. I am so delighted you know exactly what you like and what you don't care for. You seem to have an awesome view of individuality. We are in America or I am, perhaps you are too, and it is always a pleasure to be informed that we all have a voice and an opinion and can speak and do as we please within reason and the law. I would hate it if you have been offended to such a degree to have to go on to this extent to be heard. I really am so sorry because you seem to be talented and certainly have a whole lot to share. I hate to hear KZbin is so fragile because as you say everyone has a right to their own opinion. I try to point out everyone's gifts and comment and encourage them, and never leave negative comments. Who needs that. I am an adult, like you say, and I know how to go on to something else if the content isn't what I thought it was going to be. This is my first time to see you, and I watched until the end to see if the content was going to be consistent or if there was going to be do, show, and tell. I got the telling part and it concerns me that you are so burdened down by what you say should bring one joy and happiness. If people have been critical of you or pestered you about your opinions on materials and what not, maybe they will take your advice and tune into other channels for information seeking questions from the other professionals you referred us to. Listing the products you use should be ample info for viewers to figure out your likes, there is certainly no need for you to have to once again defend yourself to the point of being burdened and bothered. The best reaction about drama is to pay it no attention. Most of the drama occurs within one's own community channels, not the viewers. I guess there is a lot of competition that viewers don't make ourselves aware of, like people within the "coloring" or "crafting" channels. You make a great point that when you are tired, take a break and come back later. Good luck to you and may God grant you peace, rest and comfort. I will specifically pray that your feelings of being threatened about the coloring community becoming dismantled will be resolved, but have no fear. Certainly you must be so talented in so many areas that I am sure you will continue to be an avid KZbin giver and receiver. Don't worry, be happy- that is the message I am taking away from this hour long video, I encourage you to do the same if you have hung in here for my entire 2 minute comment. As a therapist, I know you must be feeling like a load has been lifted from your shoulders. Congratulations on speaking up.

Hey Erin!! I am catching up on ur videos... and not sure if my comment will pop up in ur recents. Hope so. Girl... YOU ROCK!!! I soo totally agree with ur remarks in this video!!! When the day is done, we are all different and human. And none of us are perfect. Mom used to say... lol, “You can’t please all the people all the time... so be respectful and kind, and please yourself.” Just not at the cost of another’s feelings!!! I went and visited Peta Hewitt and Wow! Thanx for mentioning her to us. She’s sooo calm and quiet, easy to listen to and watch. I love the intro music. Anything with a strong beat gets me dancing. That's a good thing. FYI: This is my 29th anniversary! Isn't it amazing that we all have to be told to just try everything we're interested in? I'm gonna say , "I'm sorry", to you. I sure wish you didn't have to repeat yourself. But, we are human, and some of us thirst for knowledge. That's me! Tell everything! But, don't you fret. If I want to know something, I look for it. Books, videos, and my own experience in looking back and recognizing how far I've come. So, just do what you need to do. I understand. (hopefully that's a "we" as well) Thanx, Mindy

The only thing I don't deal good with is the people disliking a video.. if one doesn't like it, they can just switch to something they do like, I mean it's not like they are forced to watch what they don't like right ? lol.. but yeah, who am I? Good artsupply shops often offers paper samples for a very resonable price. It is a great way to try out quite a few types without going broke. Else buy pads in postcard size.

Hi, Xargot. Thanks for that! It's great advice. My main concern when it comes to recommending paper is finding the right sizes and weights for colorists to put through their printers. Sometimes reducing a PDF to a certain size or even getting a household printer to take a heavier cardstock or paper can be a challenge. The ones I use are all budget-friendly, too. I've tried many kinds and I looooooove Fabriano's watercolor paper, but my printer doesn't like it quite as much as I do. :)

I also love it that you want to spotlight lesser known artists. I want to see what else is out there. I'm looking forward to seeing who you have discovered!

wonderful video, Erin. Re choice of colouring books, first I have to really love the pictures. They have to mean something to me. I have 3 of Johanna Basford's books and they have kept me busy for 1 1/2 years. Then I admired Kerby Rosanthes ? Imaginorphia and thought I would love to colour it, but as much as I admire his art, the pictures didn't make sense and I wound up frustrated and angry - not good. The next thing I look at is the paper quality - is it thick enough to snap, and does it have some tooth. All that said, I have just bought Polychromos and am nervous to start with them after years of commitment to Prismas.

Polychromos... such a learning curve! Check out Adult Coloring Mammaluvs2color. Her name is Krystal and she did a really good job of explaining how Polychromos are so different and how to get a good feel for them.

Jean Thompson Join the club! I came from the opposite direction - used Faber Castell as a kid, night a new set last year and recently got prismacolor (I guess it's the opposite for those in the US). I find that they're both very different pencils but the same technique helps me with both - use light layers. With prismacolor, I can go hard on the third layer and get a rich, vibrant look. With Polychromos, I really like using 6-7 light layers and almost never go super hard. I get a more natural looking page from these pencils. Take some time to search so the colors and practice on a few pages from different books. Inevitably you'll find that they work better for you in some books than others. Then you can use whichever pencil (Prismacolor or Polychromos) that works best in that particular book. For me, polys work well in Basford and Karlzon books. Prismacolor is great in Romantic Country books. Remember what works for me or Erin may not work for you, you may like the polys in romantic country and vice versa! Enjoy your pencils and happy coloring!

Hi Erin, another excellent video! Would you mind sharing what that clear sheet is that you are using just behind your coloring page? It's really visible anywhere between 20 and 32 minutes. Thank you!!!

It's a silicone cutting mat I picked up at Dollar Tree. I just cut it to fit my book and then put Washi tape around the edge where I cut it so it wouldn't be sharp.
