Jay Shetty sits down with Simu Liu to talk about his parent’s immigrant story and how he was able to pursue his passion despite everyone’s expectations from him. One thing that has killed a lot of dreams is fear. The fear of people not supporting us throughout the journey, the fear of being not good enough, the fear of not being able to become the person that you want to be is something that hinders a lot of people from achieving their goals in life. But what do you think would happen if you actually stop being afraid and start trying?
Simu Liu made history as the star of the first Asian-fronted movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Destin Daniel Cretton’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which garnered him The People’s Choice Award for Favorite Action Movie Star. Simu also starred in the Award winning CBC/Netflix comedy series Kim’s Convenience, which won the ACTRA Awards for Outstanding Ensemble in 2017 and Best Comedy Series at the 2018 Canadian Screen Awards. It was the first Canadian television series with an all-Asian lead cast, the series chronicles the day-to-day micro-dramas encountered by a Korean immigrant family that runs a corner grocery store. He wrote his very first book, We Are Dreamers: An Immigrant Superhero Origin Story, which tackles his struggles with parental expectations and stereotypes.

To the *worthwhile person* seeing this, your dream is not dead. Don’t allow the past and current pains and hurts stop and define you. You’re more than a conqueror. Rise up and put yourself together. Keep pushing your future depends on it. I wish you all the best in life ❤️.

Simu, I didn’t grow up as an immigrant, but I did grow up being an adopted South Korean girl, living in small town Iowa. You’ve greatly inspired me with your story and now I can’t stop thinking about following my dreams of getting my story out there and inspiring others like me. I’ve started writing a book, and I’m determined to see it through to the end. You’ve inspired me to follow my dreams. Thank you so much.

One of the first podcasts that have made me so emotional just relating to everything on an immigrant level. So much love and respect for everyone that allowed this to happen. Will stay in my heart and mind forever, with regards to the child I am to my parents and the parent I want to be one day. Incredible.

Simu tearing up when talking about giving back to his parents really shows how evolved and healed he has become after finding the courage to confront his mother about his childhood. Parents just want the best for their children and the biggest achievement for any child is that point when they can give their parents the best. almost had me tearing up. Another banger Jay!

This podcast is truly one of the absolute greatest, it's beautiful to see influential icons show a side of authenticity and vulnerability. This conversation was exactly what my inner child needed to hear. I am going to strive towards my dreams, one day I am going to be able to tell these two in person how I stayed on track, in the midst of uncertainty... just because of this conversation.

Hearing of Simu's mum locking him out and shutting the door on him when he was only 5/6 sounds soooo very harsh :(. It's sooo common amongst Asian countries for parental discipline to be on a whole other level that makes it so difficult to comprehend. They ultimately mean well, but it can be very over the top and just wrong at times how it's handled. Not surprising at all that Simu remembers that memory so vividly. I remember something similar too. It tends to be the painful moments that linger in our memories no matter our age. Tho at the same time the most incredible beautiful moments equally linger

Best interview I’ve heard on your channel, Jay. I didn’t know anything about him until he recently hosted to Juno Awards, but his journey is a very accurate reflection of many things I’ve recently learned about myself and I’m working through right now personally and professionally in music. Love this! Please have Simu back again. And shoutout to Simu, I’d love to meet him and just talk about inner growth, manifesting, etc.

This one really hit me. I’m Second generation Vietnamese and grew up with the unrelenting expectation to be tough and to live up to the standards that had brought And should continue to bring success. That sort of discipline thats given with loving intention makes for a very fractured perception of worthiness and success. Within the past five years, I’ve managed to do the work of healing myself and my relationship with my parents. By healing myself, my parents have now begun their own healing too. And now my son won’t have to endure the same sort of trauma that we did. The healing of generational trauma is a painful, gradual process but it is worth it. Thank you for sharing your story, you’re the super hero I would have appreciated as a kid and certainly do appreciate now. 👏❤️

34:57 This message and his mother's response was beautiful. I really hope I can have that relationship with my parents one day. Open communication has been a goal I've had in the back of my head, but it's been hard taking that moment to pause and allowing that conversation to happen. I'd love to sync up emotionally and have us feel like equals, instead of maintaining the parent-child dynamic where it feels like there's a wall between us.

I’m from Canada and a child of Chinese immigrants. I read Simu’s book looking for a perspective on that experience. But what surprised me is that I connected with his parents” story too. I moved with my academic husband when my first baby was 4 months old and again when my second was 9 months. Both times we didn’t have any support system and no real experience/connection to the new place. Looking back I know I wasn’t the parent I wanted to be. I just didn’t have enough energy or patience to be the parent they deserved. And in Simu’s story, I am able to forgive myself a little and know that I was always doing my best. A wonderful book and th Al you for sharing your family’s story.

One of Simu Liu's introductory statements on the agitations stemming from misinterpreted identity because of how a certain group of people look in a given community/place is also relatable to black people living in Asian countries. I learned from interviews on @Asian Boss and a few other channels how people of color, despite even being born & raised in Korea for instance, still get asked where they from and perceived as foreigners yet being citizens of the same country 🥴
