Looks good, the robes look fine without shade. I’ve replaced carroburg crimson with the flesh tearers red contrast paint for shading my reds, it’s just such a rich dark red when layered over mephiston.

It'd look good for a darker finish, perhaps closer to what's on the cover of the books, I imagine. A little darker than I'd usually choose for Bloody Rose, but still an excellent choice!

Man I love your painting videos, I'm sure I've said this on other videos of yours before but I really like your focus on getting great looking tabletop ready minis with minimum effort. Whilst the in depth ultra-high level display or competition quality painting videos can be interesting and give some good ideas, there's no way in hell I'm going to get a whole army done to that standard, I'd just burn out trying to do it and get discouraged I wasn't able to get the same results. Fighting the grey plastic with your simple and effective schemes!
@SonicSledgehammerStudio4 жыл бұрын
Glad to hear it! It's all about shifting the mountain of grey plastic, after all. I don't always promise the fastest methods (although I do try) but instead something that'll look pretty good compared to the amount of time you'll have to put in. Not all of us are out to win Golden Demon, after all!

Hey mate nice model! What do you think of using black template contrast in certain areas instead of abbadon or flat black?
@SonicSledgehammerStudio4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure it'd give quite the right look over a red basecoat - red does show through quite strongly in most cases, and Black Templar really works best over a grey primer. You could try it, but I think I'd stick to the 'normal' black paint for a more solid finish.
@Okanehira3 жыл бұрын
I love this scheme, however what happens when it comes to vehicles? Wouldn't it look really awful if you slop the carroburg crimson over a tanks panels? That's the only thing stopping me going ahead.
@SonicSledgehammerStudio3 жыл бұрын
Rather than applying the shade all over the panels, paint it into the recesses directly - you'll hear it referred to as 'panel lining' or 'pin washing' in some circles. It'll give you a very slightly brighter finish on your vehicles, but due to their size it will match up fairly closely to how your infantry are painted without changing any colours.
@Okanehira3 жыл бұрын
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio Thanks for the reply. I'll give it a shot because I love how your finished model looked! Cheers.

Wouldnt evil sun scarlet on dry work little better for highlights for more "reddish" instead of orange finish?
@JSledge8252 жыл бұрын
I know I’m painting for a table top game. But it bothers me knowing there are unpainted areas in certain areas. I’m too much of a neat freak. So it will probably take me a couple years before I can finally finish stuff. It took me 6 hours to paint one Space Marine completely from start to finish. Only thing I would have changed is the color of the brass in the magazine to a brass color.
@vallytine3 жыл бұрын
So, I tried that makeup brush technique you did, and I found that no matter how much I took off the brush, it'd leave behind an awful chalky streak across the whole surface of the model, even if I aimed really carefully for the edges, so I eventually went back to a regular drybrush. Is there something I'm missing?
@SonicSledgehammerStudio3 жыл бұрын
It might be that you've got a little too much paint on the brush to start with. Makeup brushes can hold an awful lot in the center of the brush where you can't necessarily see it, so maybe try with just a little less paint to start with. Otherwise, it might be that you're applying too much pressure; if you're getting long streaks, try flicking just the very tip of the brush where you're trying to highlight rather than pressing the entire brush down.

Not sure if you still check this particular thread - But do you have any alternatives to Cavalry Brown for those gauntlets? Vallejo stuff is very hard to find in stock here, and my first thought was Khorne Red but it doesn't quite seem to match.
@SonicSledgehammerStudio3 жыл бұрын
There isn't really a straight equivalent to Cavalry Brown outside Vallejo, unfortunately. Khorne Red is a fairly close approximation, but it's a bit more red of course. Doombull Brown is slightly more brown, but probably the closer look.
@vallytine3 жыл бұрын
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio Yeah that makes sense. I checked my local third party today and no stock, so I might mix rhinox with khorne and see how it goes.

As much as i love and use this, i didnt realise the tabbard colours were inverted from gws bloody rose. My mistake for being to new to sisters to realise. But still, do you invert them out of preference?
@SonicSledgehammerStudio2 жыл бұрын
I had to double-check my Codex to make sure I wasn't wrong, but it turns out there's very few pictures of actual Battle Sisters of the Bloody Rose in the latest book - most of them are Celestians or other specialist units. The 'standard' tabard colours are black outer, white inner, which is inverted for the Celestians and Seraphim. Take a look at the Order of Our Martyred Lady units to see the same thing reflected; it's a little weird they don't include more basic troops for each Order for people to get a look at, it'd just be a couple of photos!

Great tutorial as always. Quick question! Why Kindleflame and not Astorath Red? Please forgive my ignorance, I’m just going off GW’s painting guide!
@SonicSledgehammerStudio4 жыл бұрын
This is actually a really good question, and not one with a short answer, though I hope they'll come across as relatively simple. There's really two things at work here, which are: 1.) I'm shading over the entirety of the armour, where GW's guides usually tend to assume you're going to carefully recess shade with a fine brush and a great deal of patience, then drybrush edges. As a result, I will ordinarily use much brighter drybrush colours than suggested as I want the shade to dull all of the colours beneath down without having to take my time painting it into every panel line. 2.) The GW painting guides aren't always 100% factual about what colours they've used to achieve certain effects. A specific example is the red cloak on the Age of Sigmar Stormvermin which one can find on the Citadel Paint App. Their suggestion of 'Khorne Red, shade Nuln Oil and highlight with Wazdakka Red' is missing probably five or six steps compared to how they'd have done it in the Studio. Part of this is simply the necessity of saving space on boxes or that the app isn't really prepared to deep dive on techniques, but some of the suggested methods from GW are best taken as guidelines. Hopefully this helps! With practice you'll find you're able to call attention to a few examples where they've said "We used a simple..." and spot that's not entirely correct! ;D

@SonicSledgehammerStudio3 жыл бұрын
I've seen some of the other methods out there which have a slightly darker, 'meatier' kind of red. I'll admit that I do quite like that look sometimes, but there's something to be said for lurid, bright red on the tabletop these days!
@samvortex28023 жыл бұрын
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio For sure, I have a sisters box and been undecided on the colour (I’ve painted some black and some white, but they are kind of dull) I’ll be painting some red now and I think I’ll use that as my army’s scheme!

Sonic, almost every video you drop is a table top ready bomb! Since I'm unfamiliar with VMC paints, what VMC paint would you recommend to obtain for edge highlight of Cavalery Brown. I am simply impressed by the result of those red leather gloves. It seems you can get slightly better result compared to GW Doombull brown I am used to. Btw I use almost only Citadel, but based on your videos I have already switched to VMC flat black 😉
@SonicSledgehammerStudio4 жыл бұрын
I'd probably look at something like VMC Red Leather as an ideal highlight for Cavalry Brown. Just a touch red, mostly a lighter brown; it'll do the job quite well, I imagine.

@SonicSledgehammerStudio3 жыл бұрын
I quite like the brush-on version as well. There's not really a single straight answer to this - whatever brand you find that gives you the result you like is going to do the job. Munitorum Varnish, Vallejo's Matt Varnish, Instar Varnish+, AK Interactive Matt; the list goes on! I tend to prefer Vallejo's spray for the fact it's quick, and I haven't had a problem with it frosting yet, but any of the others are quite good.
