I've been doing this for over a week now and have already noticed increased flexibility when getting on/off my motorbike and my lower back pain has started to disappear! I would definitely recommend doing this exercise!

how did you actually start, hold on to something in front of you in a deep squat or try to squat as low as possible and try to go deeper?

Your Hindu push up video brought me to your channel. Lot of good information here. The Hindu squat/Push-up/Bridge is an effective workout you can do anywhere. I just wanted to mention that initially I had to hold on to something, table leg, to hold the sitting squat and i only did it for 30 sec. Now I can do it for extended periods without holding on to anything. Also, I always push my weight onto my heels when standing. 62 and still going strong! Great information, thanks! Excellent information, presented calmly and cohesively. I have been doing this for quite a while now (longer than a year for sure) and have now good mobility. I habitually rest in the squat position, but for some reason periods longer than, say, 10 minutes start to become somewhat restrictive to bloodflow. I have done resting squats at 19 or so minutes maximally. After that, my legs and feet feel prickly... Now, it's very important to those with pain issues, such as in a knee, to perform a correct squat or build toward one, because that can be key to restoring proper mechanics and make the pain a thing of the past. The pain is usually a symptom of 'incorrect' movement pattern and a resulting imbalanced strength distribution, such as weak legs (make squats often, to strengthen those strong muscles there and to save your back, for example). As the man says in the video, people are built to squat. This does not mean a squat should be perfect and there is no such thing as perfection in this, I think, except if you start to load up a barbell with weights and then it becomes critical to keep the spine neutral and to brace and to make sure the joints track over each other and the weight is evenly distributed. To pick up something off the floor, you can either make a squat or to perform a deadlift. Both, when done safely, keep your legs and glutes and such really strong and your back as well. It also results in a good posture as far as those parts of the body are concerned. Sitting (slouched) will result in poor posture, weak muscles, disproportionate muscle strengths and lengths and usually chronic pain down the road. From that condition, many make the good choice to start to become fit, but then they choose activities that are a great burden on them and worsen the condition and injuries result fast. Such as running. Or loaded squats with poor form in a gym. My advice is to work on key movements such as this squat and the deadlift (hip hinge) and strengthen those muscles involved. No need for a gym membership to learn this. Sorry for the rant.

Thank you for your valuable rant! I quite enjoyed it :) Seeing that it was 3 years ago you wrote this comment, care to update on your progress? I'm at the same stage now, i.e. can squat comfortably for 10-15 minutes then the restrictive bloodflow becomes an issue. Did you overcome this somhow? If so, how?

Two years ago, I had an ankle surgery with some screws / hardware in place. My mobility is now fine, except for this position, in which I still struggle a little. I try to sit about 30 seconds a day and also do some toe raises from this position. And just after a week, my flexibility is already so much better. Thanks for the video!

The sitting squat is so good for flexibility. I was so stiff a couple of years ago from sitting for long periods. Doing exercises like this has really opened my body up and I feel nearly as flexible as I did in my 20s.

OS is amazing. I’m working my way through the book and currently working on my squat. I usually practice flat foot, and am doing rocking variations from another video (recommended in this thread) to get the hip and ankle mobility, but have done much on the toes. I will start today! Question: when resting in squat, it feels like my knees are squishing my muscles (hams and calves) in my knee crease too much and restricting blood flow. Because of this I can’t actually chill out in squat very long. Will this go away with practice/mobility/flexibility increases or is it a body structure issue and I’ll need to find a variation? Thanks for everything you do across all the media platforms! Can’t wait until you come to CO.

I want to be able to comfortably remain in a sit squat. In one of my online stretching classes they want us in a sit squat for 30 - 60 seconds. I can’t get into the position. They mention how important it is to be able to get into and out of a sit squat easily, but don’t explain how to build up to it. I try to hold a dumbbell in front of me as a counter balance because I fall backward. I can do the rocking motion that you show/mention in this video.

squat can be done easily by anybody except those who have big belly because that will hamper the abdominal area in resting on the quads when you squat.

Thank you Tim for a video! But I have a question about refleksive strength, what is this? How you define this term? Second question: Is it possible to learn a squat even if I dont remember in my childhood that I was doing a squat? PS Im still working on my squat and OS excercises helps me! It is possible to regain and relearn your squat even though you don't remember. It is still in you. Keep pressing reset and (especially rocking) and it will continue to get better. Hope this helps!

It's is possibly an orthostatic blood pressure drop/readjustment. It probably goes away in 10 to 25 seconds. Make sure you are plenty hydrated, stand up slowly and give yourself time to adjust AND seek a medical expert if this keeps happening and/or if it concerns you.

Almost everyone should be able to do this with practice. I have heard of this practice helping knee, ankle, hip and back issues. Go slowly.

What is your take on the "butt wink" phenomenon ? there seems to be a lot of opposing views on when it pertains to bodyweight squats. Does it really matter if your spine is flexed in the bottom?

That's where you rock back as far as you can while maintaining s flat back and try diaphragmatic breathing. It is amazing the mobility breathing will give you. We may have some videos about that somewhere. Hope this helps!

ok great! Is your dvd 'an intro to original strength' a good place to start as a beginner? I seem to have a case of scapula winging (shoulder blades aren't too noticable, but 1 shoulders higher than the other...with the stiffness and all) Other then that it seems to be general mobility (not quite able to squat comfortably) just looking for a good comprehensive source of info to refer to as i go on. thank you so much, the videos that you did share are really interesting, a really fresh look on health!

I always sit in squat , IT feel so natural for me.. since i was little.. but people say that is not good for blood flow ? Is this true? That is blocks blood flow in the legs and can create varicose veins? Hope to get an answer to this.

I have never run across such a saying. People say you shouldn't squat below parallel and other things too. Sometimes people are wrong. If you always sit in the squat and it feels so natural, has it caused any of the situations you have heard? Are you having blood flow issues or vein issues? In other cultures, where people sit like this all the time, do they also have these issues? Just questions to help you explore what you wish to find. Hope it helps.

I too have squatted since I was very young, just instinctively. I can sit on my toes with my thighs parallel to the ground and just be - completely comfortable. I always had people stare at me and ask me how in the world I was able to do that, and I never understood what they were talking about. We westerners are as ignorant as we are arrogant, and hostile to completely normal things via social conditioning.

Thanks for the snax, are you saying working on the rocking is how I can gain the reflexive strength? And/or the rocking will also improve my range, I think tightness is one of my issues.

alison van dusen Yes ma'am. Rocking is a developmental movement that can restore reflexive strength. It teaches your stabilizer muscles how to stabilize your joints and it teaches your "moving' muscles how to move your joints, reflexively without conscious thought. When the stabilizers are doing their jobs, the body's mobility (range of motion) can naturally be expressed. So can the body's strength. Rocking can free up mobility and strength. I hope this helps! Breathing work and deadbug holds may be a place to start. It’s less about balance and more about getting the anterior chain (core) to turn on while in the bottom of the squat.

If you're a 150 lb man I can see MAYBE some comfort and benefits from the stretching, but for a normal modern person I think there's more harm than benefits. If you look at catchers in baseball who are superior athletes, they have major knee problems by the time they are in their 30s from all the squatting. We're not apes anymore, we're humans...Just do some Yoga and the stretching from that will be superior in the long term.

Can you go really wide with this squat…wide and low???is it safe?can you tucked your shoulders between your knees while going down…is it normal to feel some kind of painful stretch in your pelvis,but I would say this pain gives some kind of pleasure too.

The wider you go, the more restricted your depth. It’s certainly okay to explore different widths and depths to learn where you can move. Try to keep your spine straight in all leg variations. And I’m not sure about that pelvic pain, but as long as it is almost pleasant, perhaps it’s good!

Have you also heard about this on joe rogan? I meen weightlifters that go full depth like clarence kennedy do it wothout a problem could be that they are more flexible in the knees and hips but most people can fo it without weights and are scared to go full dept with weights

It's really hard to say without being able to see you. I'd start by trying to movements in our rocking and breathing videos. You may find all kinds of mobility waiting to come out from those.

It’s OK if your feet are out. You may find it putting a wedge or a lift under your heels, prevents the need to do this.

I have flat feet. I think that makes it more difficult. With shoes on it is pretty easy. Comfortable almost.

Shoes tend to help because they are usually elevated in the heel, this reduces the need for ankle mobility in the squat. But that is great that you can squat like this in shoes.

Perhaps, seems like a possibility. LEGO rocking video can help with that. The kettlebell helps because it provides a counterbalance and it makes your abs fire reflexively.

i got the reflexive strenght i can go all the way with my spine straight i just cant sit long enough is it just not enough leg strenght or is it something else?

It really depends on the context. How are we squatting? How many reps? Loaded or unloaded? Does it hurt?...... Squats can be done every day and they can be quite good for you done every day. But again, depending on the “how” part, they can also be detrimental. So, it depends.

You can try shifting a bit from side to side, or even play with rocking on hands and knees more. Also, make sure you are well hydrated and that you’re breathing into your belly. IF it hurts, don’t do it - for now.

It could be that your anterior chain is not reflexively firing, or it could be that your ankles are not able to move into dorsiflexion.

It is normal. But so is squatting flat footed. What would be most desirable is to be able to do both. Some can squat on the balls of their feet but not with their feet flat. This would indicate some limitations in mobility or reflexive strength. Hope this helps.

You may be lacking some of your reflexive strength. Check out the videos about breathing rocking and rolling. They will help you restore your reflexive strength so you can sit in a squat.

Only for the young and healthy. Impossible for someone like me, that’s for certain, at 52 with chronic lower back pain. Not a chance and not a good idea

I know people who were certain they needed knee replacement surgery and certain they couldn’t squat, but they discovered something different. I don’t know your situation but I do know there’s a lot of potential and power still left in your body.

I got fucking rejected for army because this nonsense squat issue... Suggest some exercises so that i can build reflex strength to sit properly in the squat bro please... I got my another selection exam in January till then i got to develop it.

We Indians have our toilets designed in such a way that we dont need to spare time for this exercise, we do this everyday by default. Btw gr8 video
