SKETCHY eBay body armor vs REAL police gear

We previously tested the sketchy eBay, non-branded, non-certified Kevlar armor and it actually worked quite well. But how does it compare to REAL commercial Kevlar that costs much more, but is fully-tested and certified.

Years ago I sold body armor, and we had two questions we always had an answer for: 1) Is it hot? Answer: it's not as hot as a bullet. And 2) Is it heavy?) Answer; Not as heavy as a coffin.

@Dryhalf08
@Dryhalf08 4 жыл бұрын
A hollow point can actually sometimes cut through soft armor better than a fmj can penetrate it. The small edge that is on the mouth of a hollow point has the possibility of acting like a knife to help cut through and even some hollow points once they impact the armor become deformed in a manner that helps them make it through the armor better. Also some fmj’s have a flat nose like the .40 and 10mm which don’t really help in penetrating the armor either. Ive seen this from shooting vest myself.

@agvulpine
@agvulpine 4 жыл бұрын
As an armchair engineer, I would think the solid surface goes on the outside to absorb much of the energy, and the kevlar goes on the inside to catch the slower flattened bullet. Seems like putting the kevlar on the outside of a hard backing would only aid in the bullet penetrating the fibers as it bores a small hole and shreds the kevlar like a hole punch... Unable to act like a catcher's mitt.

Be very glad you said no. My mother related a story to me of a neighbor. Said neighbor wanted to scare his dog from attacking the mailman. Like your friend, he emptied the shotshell so that only the wadding remained. The time came, the mailman arrived, the dog went on the attack, the neighbor aimed at the dog and fired. In less than a half an hour, the dog was dead. The wadding had acted as effectively as any bullet, maybe more so in this case as the powder charge had nothing BUT the wad to accelerate. Considering all the wadding hits captured on the High-speed I've seen on TFM, many are still travelling over supersonic speeds and inflict considerable secondary damage to targets. Case in point: Wadding can kill. Exhibit A: Jason Lee in "The Crow" Killed by wadding from a gun that only fires blanks. T'was the close range that did him in... Just a thought or two from someone who's fired a gun or two... OK maybe a whole lot more. No Officer Greg or Paul Harrell, but pretty dang familiar. Again, I'm really glad you said NO !!

The Torch Channel It was Brandon Lee, and it wasn’t the wadding that killed him. A MacGuyvered dummy round from an earlier shot had gone off (the prop crew got lazy and just removed the powder from the live round, but not the primer) and the bullet became lodged in the barrel. Without bothering to check if the barrel was clear, they loaded the gun with blanks and reunited father with son. That aside, the “Wadding can kill” point is still an excellent one.

Imagine if they covered every obesity death every day. According to the National Institutes of Health in the USA alone 300,000 people die yearly. Can you imagine over 900 breaking news flashes a day over fat asses dying from fast food and poor yet fully preventable decisions? Demonizing you’re precious McDonald’s etc. Assault foods. Been watching Terrance Popp for years, retired Army E8. He's done more than his fair share of combat, as his injuries stacked up over the years and the weight (soldiers like him are expected to move with), he was able to keep the late style vest/plate carriers- he set it up in a way that most of the weight gets carried on the belt line so the 50-80 lbs of armor are carried by the hips and not the spine. Might be worth fiddling around with your SHTF gear OG, hope you never need it, and if you do the people you will help could ask for no better man on their side. I've always thought that FMJs have better penetration ability than HPs. Because hollow point is designed to fragment/expand on impact and there it loses all of its energy which would be needed for penetration.

madcap magician The more layers the more it slows down even high velocity rounds. Two layers would be better than one against pistol rounds as well. Would dissipate the impact over more material. I’d estimate 8-10 layers of this stuff to stop an AK or AR round.

I was out in the desert one time and I came across this place where people had been shooting. They left behind this Vietnam war era flak vest they had shot to ribbons with what appeared to be 9mm or .357 bullets that appeared to be solid brass. I took that vest home and opened it up and not one of those bullets got anywhere near getting through. Lots of the bullets trapped inside the cover.

The new 327 federal magnum is a very impressive round. It's basically the same ballistic value as the 357 magnum but in a lower recoil 32 caliber instead of 38 caliber. Desgined as a personal protective cartridge, it's a hard hitting bullet. The bullets range from 80 grain up to 130 grain hard cast lead. I've got 2 revolvers the first is a Ruger single 7 ( single action) & the SP-101 Dubble action. It's a fun range round as well. Powerful yet it doesn't beat ya up.

The eBay armor is thinner, like a lot of the newer and thinner ballistic panels to serve as a backer to a rifle plate and/or to have a trauma plate behind it to disperse impact energy to reduce recovery time from a shot. Usually, the trauma plates I see on the market are like 7-10mm thick memory foam of some sort or a thin metal plate for absorbing the kinetic energy. I have a eSAPI rifle plate with a thin kevlar panel behind it followed by a titanium trauma plate with overall depth of about 1" or just about for front, back, and sides. Not heavy, not too thick and kinda expensive but it works well.

Including the flashy and fast moving 95gr Magtech JSP, 100gr S&B SP, 115 and 124gr S&B FMJ, 124gr HST+P. 200gr PPU Subsonic from the .308Win went clean through though (and so will similar rounds like the .300Blackout...) Impressive for the price (35€) and weight (1lb). If it didn't take 3 months to deliver, I'd try the ceramic level IV version of it...
