Hong Kong Improvised Body Armor - Is it foolish optimism?

We were asked to test some body armor sent to us from a Hong Konger who wanted to know if some thin aluminum (ium) panels he planned to wear, would actually stop a bullet. In our tests we used 9mm and 45 acp using 10" barrels. The long barrels give higher velocity than a shorter barrel. This video is for information only and the results are not written in stone. Your results may vary.
Thank you Patreon and channel members for your support. Due to the content of this video, we will probably just have to rely on viewer support. It is an important video worth posting. Using viewer-suggestions, we'll test other odd-ball contraptions people may consider trying.

Any of you protesters out there that decide to do this, back the plates with "something". Maybe a layer of tire rubber, or spray on some beadliner. In fact, spray all the plates with beadliner or a similar product. A slight gap between the plates also helps to slow down the projectiles (the spray on beadliner is going to be the best bet I think). Make sure you build a nice harness that keeps those plates up where they belong, and put plates front and back (because your running when the shooting starts!). Also, try and cover up and camouflage those plates. You don't want the extra bloodthirsty among the Gestapo to know to aim for your head. And one last thing, if the rifles come out your screwed. These and pretty much any home made armor are useless against rifles.

note that the armour also has to be very light and innocuous. The protesters are always on the move and now that police are lying to judges to get search warrants so you would want your armour to not look like armour at home (after use turn it back into a small shelf)

It'd be interesting seeing different configurations of metal plates, ceramic tiles and rubber sheets to determine what is the most effective way of projectile stopping. Rubber is good to prevent spalling, so I'm thinking metal-rubber-ceramic-metal could be a good test configuration. First layer of metal slows down the object, but still gets penetrated. The rubber doesn't really affect penetration, but when the projectile impacts the tile and breaks up, the fragments are caught. The backing metal plate makes for a rigid frame, and provides emergency protection against any remains passing through the tile. This is all speculative, but if it works, it could probably make for an easily assembled makeshift armour that's decently compact, albeit not as effective as a real solution with rubber-covered AR500 steel.

Many of them are just kids, like most Asian countries, students in Hong Kong spend most of their time studying. You can easily find a protester in the “frontline” who obviously weighs less than 120 pounds. While they need to run fast to escape, it is very important for them to have a light, effective and affordable armour, which they can carry around the city without being caught.

I have to admit, Jeff, that I was thinking like you. I'd love to see this testing done with mild steel plate of the same thickness. @Wearyman
@Wearyman 4 жыл бұрын
I'm betting they stopped because of the softness of the aluminum acting much like a poly body armor and deforming before shattering but giving enough resistance to slow down the bullet. I would say, take 4 of those plates, layer them with tight weave fiberglass, and wrap the whole thing in duct tape. Won't stop a rifle round, but against HK police .38 snubbys? Absolutely.

Matt at Demo Ranch very recently showed that using seat belts was a pretty decent home made armor material. Ceramic plate in between aluminum plates then well wrapped with seat belts sounds like a winner, it'd be interesting and fun to see you boys test that combination out. Thanks for another great video fellas, awesome stuff.

@johnparrish9215
@johnparrish9215 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheTeehee11111 It's a little softer than acrylic so it does not shatter. You will find the bullets pernitrate about half way and are stuck. It has a lot of Give to it, just like Kevlar does, except in a plate and not a fabric.

It's polyethylene and it's very effective once over 2cm thick. My guess is that 2cm of laminated 1mm polyethylene sheets are likely to stop just about any round under 1500 fps.
