Excellent video, and of particular interest was the 'V' tool. Found one in a set of tools I inherited and thanks to John I now know how to use it.

Thanks from Ontario as well..... Excellent clear advice...... I've been turning for almost fifty years, and have always defaulted to gouges, after a catch. (For years at a time) I've had the grind wrong on my inch and a quarter (old file) since the beginning. Technique was iffy too.......... Goodby sandpaper........ :)

I mostly turn metal on a gearhead engine lathe and found a certain strong but limited intrest in wood turning that way. I love to do it, but it will never be something i do very often...or be very good at. That said...i absolutely enjoyed your presentation. Many woodworkers write about using a "classical" grind and archieving work through "feeling" yourself through the cut. You kinda show the reality, of course there is a gazillion of grinds, just like in metalturning, which all have merit....

Thanks for the video John! I've found the skew to be very much like the driver in golf -- hard to learn but if you can make it work for you it really helps your game!! I have a long way to go!!!

what about tool height rest... or just set to what is comfortable as regards reach and body height when cutting

In case you couldn’t find an answer in all those years - the toolrest ist above Center. That makes tool control a bit easier. But try it yourself, its important!
