This has been a really fun series. There's a ton of class rankings out there that focus purely on character optimization, it's really awesome to see a ranking that actually takes theme, content, and coolness into account. Especially in a game with basically infinitely scalable difficulty that stuff matters a ton to how enjoyable and replayable the game is and you did a great job incorporating it without ignoring mechanical viability.l

@@asw654 especially cause some companions probably aren't leaving if you want to make your KC their class anyways. Like if you're playing Pally, then Seelah ain't gonna leave you in Act 5, since any Mythic Path that would cause her to leave is ineligible for keeping Pally privileges

This was a fantastic series! I especially love the fact you took RP, reactivity and theme into account for these rankings. Too often guides like this only care about mechanics and anything that doesn't break the game is trash lol. Anybody who wants help with the game as a newbie or a returning player who is trying to figure out what has changed via patches should use this series as a guide in my book.

I may have mentioned this before in a previous video, but I'm grateful for your content. I have over 500+ hours in the game but I've only beaten the game once because I'm so indecisive about what class to play. Your list has really helped me out and made me realize I don't need to do some crazy build with 3 lvl dips in other classes just to beat the game on core difficulty. I've started coming up with my own builds and not just following the cookie-cutter ones I've found online and I'm having much more fun with the game.

@@SlanderedGaming There's a fun interaction with the Clemency of Shadows ring and summons, i've noticed that any skeleton's / minions I summon that get *knocked unconscious (also works if they die)* trigger the effect on the ring that summons a giant spider to protect the party for a few rounds, functionally it's like your skeletons have a 2nd life and turn into spiders when they go down lol, it appears to be reading them as "party members" rather than summons for the effect lol. You get this ring from the stone of ghostly pathways decree I believe. And since the ring is an aura buff, it affects everyone in a 30 yard radius, so dropping like 12 summons from different people is like having a small army of minions that replicate into spiders when they die. Plus it gives everyone in the aura an extra attack of opportunity, just a solid ring, one of the best decree items imo, though gravesinger from rovagug's relic is pretty cool with the cc immunity it offers and expanded crit range.

It's nice to see someone that actually ranks these clases and archetypes based on more than optimisation or "what can it do with a dip". I personally generaly pick classes based on theme more than what's optimal. That's not to say I'd pick the worst class and leave it as is, but that I prefer a thematic build more than min-maxed bs that makes no sense to me. This is the reason why I go Steelblood into Hellknight. Everyone says you should just pick Primalist and that's it. But, as a bloodrager enjoyer, it's nice to be able to multiclass into something that the world actually reacts to.

Man, this has been one hell of a journey, huh? You talking about the sorcerer made me remember how the first CRPG I ever played was Baldur's Gate 2, back in 2001 as barely a teenager. I picked sorcerer even though it was sorta a weird bastardization because the system was still a modified 2nd edition but 3rd had already been released and they took a few ideas to hybridize. It was new and the idea of not needing to prepare exact amounts of spells, just learning them and choosing as I use them was appealing. Good times. That was back when CRPGs still felt magical to me. Your enthusiasm and positivity make watching your videos always enjoyable man, and your consistent interaction in the comments is a huge plus that you can't get from larger channels. I can't wait to see what you come out with next, hope you have an absolutely fantastic new year!

Thanks for the extensive reviews! I learned a lot about the underlying Pathfinder systems and its implementation in this game. As i play the game on care-bear mode I have a lot more leeway in choosing a class, but even then my Sorcerer Lich playthrough was the most difficult one as I tried playing a summoner and discovered the spell resistance mechanics. Currently I am enjoying a crusader angel playthrough which feels completely OP, but i think most classes should feel OP at the higher levels.

Cool vid, personally, I think sohei is probably the best martial class in the game. Built correctly with most mythic paths and a glaive, you have an unkillable and unhittable mount while your mc has insane dps with loads of attacks. Also with the lich path, gives a horseman of the apocalypse vibes better then other mount classes.

I am playing a D (Witch Doctor) and cannot really disagree :P Though it is a Shaman [B] with a few less Hexes, but Channel Energy; and I really do not need more Hexes per turn (the Counter Curse sucks though). Glad to hear your conclusion that we can succeed the game with any class (I play with a mix of Daring/Core/Hard options, mainly Core diff.). ( My main will continue as Loremaster though, after a dip in Empyreal Sorcerer.) ( actually, my playthrough is on hold, at the start of Ch. 3 ; just to play other games )

Man your class ranking series is really great. It's a mainstay for me when it comes to playing WOTR. My current playthrough is a Steelblood Demon. Personally I think Steelblood is probably an A-tier class personally, as it shores up one of Bloodrager's weaknesses (AC) with armor, and it gains armor training and armored swiftness to counteract the penalties for wearing heavy armor. I'd say it's probably the 2nd best Bloodrager option outside of Primalist.

I would actually say that Ecclesitheurge is not as good for the Angel mythic path. Since the main advantage of the Ecclesitheurge is that you get to put your primary Domain's spells into regular spell slots, which would let you cast more spells from other classes. For example, if Madness is your primary Domain, you can put Phantasmal Killer and Weird in your spell slots. But the Angel spells are so good that you don't really need Domain spells.

I disagree a little about the paladin. Because if you play without mercenaries and don't want your MC to be a skald, then she is the main contender for this role. Both MC paladin and Seelah skald fit together quite well.

I completely agree with placing Demonslayer at the top-spot. I can remember sitting in a Session Zero for the Giantslayer AP that I was getting ready to GM for my home crew (we finished about a year ago, had a great time) and saying "If anyone decides to play a dwarven ranger with favored enemy giant, just be aware that I'm going to throw everything but the kitchen sink at that character, because that's just cheating". Thankfully, no one grabbed that combo 🙂

Elemental specialist wizard into arcane trickster is an S tier blaster. It broke casters for me in this game, any other type of caster just seems underwhelming

Your list is close to mine, but the difficulty setting I play on is different so I have a different perspective (I play pretty much exclusively on unfair). I'd have ranked demonslayer maybe a little lower (it is still an S tier for me for sure), while cleric paladin and gendarme a bit higher, but its fairly close to your list honestly. Best class in the game is a very hard thing to rank or consider with how many classes are in the entire game, but if I was pushed to shove on #1 class, it'd probably be brown fur transmuter, and not for the main character, but as a merc. The base cleric does have some things going for it over ecclisatheurge. It can wear a shield and medium armor and there are some very powerful shields (cold bite) and medium armors (hide of elemental carnage) that an ecclisatheurge cant wear, but base cleric can without any need for feats. Base cleric still has the same amount of domains as well. Crusader is harder to rank because its almost completely different than ecc/cleric being almost exclusively martial focused while the other two lean more towards being caster focused. All three of these classes are strong, and deserve an A or higher ranking from me for sure (not sure why you put cleric at C tier, it really is a strong class). Gendarme is kinda like the S tier of cavalier. Its feat progression is similar in vein to that of a primalist, in that it trades teamwork feats for combat feats, and this is almost always better. I really wanted to roll a beast rider but was turned off by its bonus feats mostly being teamwork only feats :( Court poet also is S tier because it gives a morale bonus to int and cha which is nearly impossible to get and almost always will stack with your casters. It also raises his own DC over other skalds when he casts spells, and the majority of skald spells are evocation/enchantment based which love having higher DC. It is equivalent on the same level as skald to me if you're running a caster heavy party it will scale them through the roof. My court poet weirdly enough uses a staff and does nothing but sing and cast confuse / shouts with the odd displacement or invisibility thrown in to help my front line. When fighting undead I swap to a bow on him. One last note, his song not only improves your casters capabilities, but improves monk evasion rate, and most importantly, your smite evils from paladins. A court poet buffing and supporting a few paladins is devastating. Lastly, paladins. A tier minimum but most likely S tier. Cant speak enough about how strong paladins are. In most situations they're stronger than even your #1 demonslayer. Bless weapon is one of the strongest buffs a martial can have applied and is absolutely bonkers (which by the way, rangers dont get access to unfortunately. I think its a paladin and glory domain exclusive spell), and in combination with smite and mark of justice its just too good in a campaign devoted to 90+% evil enemies you fight. Full pet progression too is just icing on the cake. The only thing people laud about paladins that I dont is their inherent saves. On unfair, saves don't honestly matter that much (even in guarded hearth my paladins are still getting hit by things like phantasmal putrefaction and other nasty aoes). Maybe on an easier difficulty these things would matter but I don't include this as on unfair it doesn't change a thing lol.

Yeah, animal companions win out for me, thanks to all the stuff they add to the game in a mechanical sense. That and my first playthru of 'Beneath the Stolen Lands' was 6 sacred huntsmen, and having 6 leopards whom the enemy could not hit thanks to teamwork buffs, mixed with humans peppering them with arrows made that fun. Not as useful here since they nerfed a lot of the Companion power to make the equipment more useful, and to be fair, my single leopard was able to hit for 50+ damage with every attack, had several attacks per round, and moved at 100+ feet per round, that little lady tore through everything. Regardless, I do like that you admit biases here, while also explaining the picks when you feel they might be seen as off, placing emphasis on that these are YOUR picks, but also wanting people to understand WHY they are your picks. Very well presented, very well done.

I recruited a demonslayer merc during my first playthrough, she was wielding a longspear and fighting with a big dog (called Buddy). I was shocked when i started my first fight with her because did not expect the dog to be as big as a horse and having more strength than my whole party combined (37 at level 18) and more AC than my main tank tower shield wielding armored hulk (though he had double the health). im halfway sure that she was actually feeding the demons to the damn thing, along with ground beef and steroids. she pretty much became mendatory because the dog had a higher carrying capability than a U-haul (5600 lbs, or 2.8 TONS) and the first time i tried to leave drezen without her my party got instantly crushed by the weight of my greed and essentially couldnt move.

Sohei should be ranked S tier, probably the best 12 level class. Even you limited to 20 lv, you can still make Sohei an archer with 9 attacks and riding a horse. Unlike Zen Archer, Sohei doesn’t forbid you from using rapid shot/manyshot with flurry of blows. So, 4 from full bab + 2 from flurry + 1 from rapid + 1 from manyshot + 1 haste. And extra 1 attack from 2 level dip on Eldritch Archer, if you don’t limit to a single class.

Just came across this series, well done. I probably would have rated Swordlord a bit higher as a prestige class, a high D or maybe a low C? Mechanically Deft Strike + Power Attack work well together and its persuasion based abilities seem to me easier to impact enemies then some abilities other classes have. Thematically is where it shines for me since you are leading a crusade and I think of Swordlords as natural leaders. There's also a specific encounter at the Molten Scar where Jannah Aldori gives you a nice Dueling Sword if you are a Swordlord.

what makes the skald so op imo is the fact that you can just choose who doesn't accept the inspire rage. It's an absolutely BANANAS skill by itself considering the sheer number increase on a single cast. But you can nullify the negative that you can't cast by just making your casters opt to not take it. The ability just steroids your party into oblivion and literally doesn't have a negative side unless you want it to have lol

HK Sig 5 level dip plus DD 4 level dip is extremely strong imo, since HK Sig is a spellcaster who probably wants to be in the thick of things. Using the Order of the Gate, you can wear Adamantine Full-Plate without penalty to casting, and DD will give you a lot of bonuses to base stats that are excellent to a melee caster. You also only lose 1 caster level, because HK Sig is full casting progression, making a merged Lich still viable

amazingly my first playthrough was an assassin (rogue 10/assassin 10) and by golly i was ropable when i found the mechanics were largely ineffective - playthrough was saved by the fact i went demon (thank you demonic rage and demonic charge!)

Many classes you put at D Tier are meant to be used with multiclassing. Take Armored Battlemage for example; it's clearly worse than the base Magus. However have you considered kukri dual wielding Armored Battlemage & Knife Master? You would be wearing medium armor, have most of the offensive/defensive wizard spells and have armor training for excellent protection. That's a tankier version of an Eldritch Scoundrel, one that can have a 17-20 critical range with spells due to spell strike and sneak attack on top of that. Similarly Thug & Overwhelming Soul and Psychokineticist & Instinctiual Warrior are quite fun options. Armored Battlemage & Two-handed Fighter is a viable option too. You won't miss Spell Combat if you're dual wielding or using a two-handed weapon.

Traditional monk and knife master rogue is my favourite class, super swift an able to dish out a bit of damage bite also counts as finisse natural so I chuck in tiefling or orc now

Right now primalist is even stronger than it used to be. This is because you can now also individually exchange the bloodline abilities of a second bloodline (obtained via mythic ability) for even more rage powers. Also dragon disciple is definitely a cool class but I wish they included a better incentive for pushing to level 10. I see so many builds where people just take a 4 level dip because anything more makes the build less optimal.

In defense of the beast tamer class ... the 5 mastodon to tank are awesome , and having 10 beast companions ( 4+ 5 animal conpanion and 1 trasmuter ) make all the game pretty ez , yeas i was playing in core but i never had problem munching enemies , i'm pumped about the chimeric aspect shifter cause it's the first animal( that you control) that is ranged . Still considering your criteria . Beast tamer bard is a A tier , summons stronger than dirge and you can power them up . More you buff all animal companions and have plenty of songs and spell to do whatever u want .

Well done with this series, it's been solid with a good balance of passion from all involved as well as solid perspectives. A caveat I feel is often missed by many is that these rankings are supposed to have flux, not just from person to person, but adventure path to adventure path - it's the nature of the challenged faced that ultimately determines what are the best tools to tackle these challenges. If owlcat releases another adventure path that favors summons, or favors ranged combat etc, the entire ranking would engage in flux and that's how it should be.. Other than that, as always everyone is welcome to their own opinions and flavor of what works for them, there's nothing wrong with personal preference. I'd never roll wizard with Sage Sorc in the game, but that's my preference and I know everyone has their own. Just have fun and play the game.

Can confirm, this list will 100% require an updated version (or it has one, and I'm blind), because classes like Assassin and such- which requiring a Mythic Ability to even function, is definitely much better nowadays.

If you want to play paladin, you’d have to double class Seelah into something else, treating her 1 or 2 pally levels as a dip, right. When I started a Wildland Shaman I didn’t see any reason for a second shammy on the team, so Camellia became a demon hunter. So here’s my question: what would you choose for Seelah? War priest, Cleric, Inquisitor or something completely different? Cheers

Man, making a ranking list for WOTR must be a real pain given the number of class options. You often can't really tell how well a class is going to play in practice until you actually give it a go. You can read up all the class descriptions, but its easy for you to form a misunderstanding on how something works or how useful its going to be. Then ranking based on class level at 20 doesn't tell the whole story because sometimes the class can get a big powerup from dips, sometimes the class is awful until late in the game, and sometimes the class is reliant on other party members to be effective- for example average BAB classes tend to often struggle against high AC enemies, so you might want shattered defenses that'll probably require a bard or someone with frightful aspect.

I agree that there is no reason to bring a paladin if you have Seelah. It's also the case that with limited feat slots there is not too much build variety for paladins. That said, in Midnight Isles roguelike mode I pretty much always have one around for Aura of Justice , Greater Aura of Courage , and the assorted aura bonuses. They are a great frontline class and would be an "A" in the main campaign if Seelah didn't already have that role covered.

There absolutely is a reason to bring a paladin even if you have Seelah. Smites stack. You can never have enough bless weapons (especially if dual wielding). Paladins make a great frontline martial given that they have full pet progression and can ride it and can still dip into sohei (given that sohei requires lawful which a paladin already is). Mark of justice also stacks (with smite that is). There is no reason not to run a paladin MC in a campaign dedicated to fighting chaotic evil enemies.

the only thing seelah is bad is , horse is often get stuck indoor also blocking companion , aside of that she could be great tank and debuffer. She is great paired with faith bearer schmitar which heals all companion for every lore religion skill points she have for every critical. Just dip seelah into 3 loremaster for improved improved critical to get extra critical range.
