Love Lex!!! I remember seeing Slayer at the Giant's stadium in New Jersey. They opened with this song ,and everyone started this HUGE pit! People were jumping from the seated areas down onto the general admission(field) area. And that is a 20 plus foot drop to the ground. And all the security guards were running after all the people that were rushing toward the HUGE pit! IT was total chaos! And remember, Sepultura, Sevendust and many others played before Slayer came on the stage. They didn't have 1/10th the pit Slayer started after the first two notes of this song! Epic!

And I have seen Slayer and Metallica many, many times. Oh and the security guiards running after the crowd of people, running into the pit, was total war. All you saw was people falling down like ants onto the ground, people helping each other get down by lowering them or jumping into a crowd of them that already made it onto the field. And all the security guards in bright yellow, running in every direction to stop them. They gave up about 15 seconds after the song started. there were too many Slayer fans!

And after about 10 seconds of confusion, the whole crowd started chanting SLAYER! SLAYER! SLAYER!, And Biohazard did not play another song, I don't know if they could after that embarrassment. 20 some minutes later SLAYER started with Hell AWAITS! They played a two-hour show that night. It was SOO freakin' good! There whole encore was the entire album of Reign in Blood from Angel of Death through Reign in Blood. I sometimes think about how war has almost become a popular game show in recent years. After the Gulf War, some people wanted to sit down and be entertained by the war on TV, we've seen this throughout the '90s and post 2000.

I remember staying up late one Saturday Night in 1990 watching MTV'S Head bangers Ball at midnight. I had my headphones plugged into my little black and white tv I had so I wouldn't wake my parents. The effect this had on me can't be measured. You have to understand Nirvana and the grunge movement was a year away. This was still the era when Bon Jovi and Janet Jackson and Prince ruled TV and Radio. Hearing this was like peering into an entirely different universe. This was for a couple of years for me (funny enough until 1994 when Slayer put out their video for a song called "Dittohead") THE fastest song I had ever heard. Until I heard this I didn't know you could play this fast. And it's not just KZbin capping the volume. I've been front row at a Slayer show and even then this song wasn't loud enough despite the my body vibrating into another dimension from the sound telling me otherwise.

I think this was the 1st video that Slayer put on MTV - and this was 1990? - and MTV debuted in 1981 - so Slayer didn't even appear on MTV for the first 9 years. My point to you Brad & Lex is that thrash metal was an "underground" scene - it was far removed from the pop / mainstream of music in the 80's. These bands had to build their fan followings the old fashion way - by performing in front of live audiences and then getting exposure on local radio stations. Only the strong survived.
