It sounded pretty bloody good to me, until the last five minutes of this track. I wouldn't consider myself an afficionado of current "metalcore" either (if this is what they were going for). I found the ending disappointing, because it was so... dissociative, for lack of a better word.

As a sleep token fan, this song is such an evolution for them. The singer, Vessel, has done some screaming before, but it was less refined, and they haven't done many 'traditional' breakdowns before either. They also rarely do guitar solos, although there is one in their song Telomeres if I recall. The Funk elements are a wonderful edition and brings even more variety to their music. I'm so excited for more songs from them.
@juliagoatly58572 жыл бұрын
This is the antithesis to their previous compositional form where their songs had a heavy djent low tune breakdown on the ending to several tracks and this ends with funk. Love it! They are full of surprises and never cease to amaze. I do love the linear songwriting structure which I guess is even more prevalent in tech metal & prog styles and it seems they have returned to that more traditional sound with this track. Their previous album was impressive and catchy nonetheless more mainstream sounding.

The funk at the end (which sounds like a Stevie Wonder in slow motion, amazing!) works as if it is proposing as a closing the original of which the first riff is a variation. If you listen to the first riff after the final funky bit, all the syncope make sense. This is a technique used in composition, you deconstruct a theme and propose it at the beginning, then use the original to close. They are also repeating the lyrics, to make it more obvious. Benjamin Britten used the technique in his Nocturnal. These guys really, really know what they are doing.
