It's because the dude is Christian so metal is evil and scary, or in his case "demonic" when it comes to the imagery or lyrics. Yet as you say he's a rapper, which is so ironic considering the shit they say. I can tell you the big difference is metal actually has meaning behind their lyrics unlike most rappers stuff.

Taylor explained the song's meaning to The Pulse of Radio: "'The Devil In I' is really about the war inside yourself," he said. "Trying not to give into defeatism, trying not to give into negativity, trying not to give up basically. It's a struggle. It's one of the hardest thing you can do, is to give in to that side of yourself."

Correct me friend. Also I believe this was the first music video on The Grey Chapter (if not then I apologize for the misinformation) so this showed their transition from the masks they had in the previous album, coupled with the pain and fear they had dealing with the death of Paul, the bassist, manifested into their greatest fears (dogs, birds, hanging, being eaten alive). Clown directs most, if not all, of their music videos and they're all a trip but so beautifully done from a film making perspective

Snuff is not a scary song. It's actually kinda sad. There is a version where Corey does an acoustic version with no mask that is really good and popular with reactors if you want to be safe. Daddy by Korn is really dark though. Be in a good head space for that one. It still makes me uncomfortable when I hear it. Kind of a one and done I don't want to go back there kinda song. But he is speaking about real trauma so doesn't get much more raw.

The thing about people who listen to metal music is we are genuinely really nice people. You hit the nail on the head when you said that we connect to the music because we have had things gone on in our lives. The music is just an extension of our inner self unleashing the pain, rage, hurt...all the negative. Think about the mosh pit , it's full of these people just thrashing about... lawyers, blue collar, white collar workers, people with mental health issues, people just dealing with everyday stuff, people dealing with deeper stuff all together just releasing it all. We all go through something we all have bad days and sometimes we just take it and keep moving over and over, without an outlet a normal person would explode or crumble. The music is our outlet. Music has saved my life literally many times. I have been down so far that my only option felt like death to eacape...my mind and body was like a prison filled with the memories of what my own uncle had done to me and my mother's betrayal taking his side and keeping contact with him. I wouldn't be here but just knowing that Johnathan Davis (lead singer from Korn) had gone through something similar and put out "Daddy" gave me hope that you can make it through, yes there is pain and sorrow but your not alone and it won't define you.

He was scheduled for a parole hearing but did something and he got another 3 years before he's eligible again. I think they gave him like 22 years or something but he deserves to be behind bars until he passes away. I mean he literally would grab the dogs by the throat and throw them off the porch onto the ground and said that would happen to us if we ever told anyone what he was doing.

Something I really dislike is when people say "if my child listened to this id be concerned." If you ever watch metal artists do interviews they are the most calm teddy bear dudes you will ever listen to when they speak. Metal music is an outlet for violent thoughts and getting things off your chest. They are so shocking and violent for that reason its designed to get your emotions out of you. (obviously a very small child shouldnt watch the music video that could give a child awful nightmares for a while unless you took the time to explain to them that the video isnt real.)

I've been to all kinds of gigs. The friendliest, most loving and inclusive crowd are the rockers/metalheads. I was front row for Slipknot at Download last year. Yes it's crazy but people look out for each other, protect each other in the crowd. If you walked in on your son watching this, concern is the last thing you should be feeling, and relief would be the apt emotion. You know he'll be looked after, have the rest of the metal community treating him as though he's ine of their own children. Metalheads are THE best people on this planet.

The song is actually about struggling with yourself and wanting to be a better person. "The Devil in I" is your flaws... the devil inside you, the "you" that you don't want to be. The gruesome death scenes are symbolic. Each represents either that particular band member's greatest flaw or one of their greatest fears. Also, in each death scene, the band member is wearing their "old" mask to represent their past self.

This songs is genius and there’s so much symbolism in the video as to the boys’ biggest fears. You see Sid chew off his fingers which are his bread and butter, if he loses his hands he loses who he is. Chris Fehn is deathly afraid of birds so you see birds crawling on him. Corey is afraid of being unable to write anymore so he blows himself up. I’m not sure what the significance of Mick Thomson peeling his face off. Or Jim Root blowing himself up. This video is early on when Jey Weinberg and V-Man they get stabbed up by the rest of the band to get inducted into the band. Craig gets attacked by dogs. It’s just deep and beautiful at the same time.

This 2014 album ('The Gray Chapter') was something of a comeback record for Slipknot... because they had tragedy strike the band in 2010 when original bassist Paul Gray passed away from a prescription drug OD. They named the new album after the late bassist... Then, original drummer Joey Jordison was M.I.A. for the sessions (He was struggling w/ health issues and unwilling to return to Slipknot)... so, they made the difficult decision to fire Jordison (He passed away in 2021) Slipknot recruited drummer Jay Weinberg for the album and bass was recorded by the other members... bassist Alessandro Venturella signed on for the tour and joined the band... Those were the 2 new members in the music video riding around in electric wheelchairs and ended up getting stabbed... Check out 'Killpop' by Slipknot on the same album... Not as explicit visually but a dark song... However, it's a bit mellower and Corey Taylor gave the song an amazing hook and catchy chorus.

The second show I ever saw was Slipknot on the Jager tour back in 99. I can attribute their music to part of the reason I survived teenage angst and depression. I am so happy I have that experience so that I don't get upset and stifle my children's own outlets. You never know where the inspiration comes from to live or to keep living. I think there is a certain beauty, brightness and calmness in the darkness. Also, the psychology behind this video is very interesting. You should look up the official explanation, it teaches a lot about perspective, and judging things off from solely the face value of it.

So here’s the official comments from band members (Corey and Shawn Cranan aka the Clown): Taylor explained the song's meaning to The Pulse of Radio: "'The Devil In I' is really about the war inside yourself," he said. "Trying not to give into defeatism, trying not to give into negativity, trying not to give up basically. It's a struggle. It's one of the hardest thing you can do, is to give in to that side of yourself." The song's music video was directed by Slipknot drummer Shawn Crahan and features the destruction of band members in various ways. Chris Fehn, for instance, is pecked to death by ravens, a fate he requested for himself as the percussionist suffers from a fear of birds. Sid Wilson, meanwhile, eats his arm and fingers in the clip, destroying the things most important for the DJ's role in the band. "Basically, this video is about finding past devils, past things - becoming one with it and then doing away with it," Crahan explained. So basically this is a song about facing and fighting your fears. And not succumbing to them.

I see it as a bad relationship and how the blame goes back and forth over time and how it eats a person up. Eventually it leads to an internal rage snap. It's a very heartfelt message and warning that it's not going to be taken anymore. Some couples blame each other's faults but he's saying that he simply won't do it anymore.

❤❤❤❤this album this song is off of is my favourite, the grey chapter. This song is one of 3 songs that really pinpointed how they were dealing with the anger, depression and guilt amongst many other feelings after their bassist paul had passed away. This song was about facing those devils inside from the past and dealing with those feelings, not giving into the negativity, feeling what needs to be felt and moving past and letting go of the negative .the video was really crazy but is so indicative of facing ones fear ( literally lol they each die from their own biggest fears ) and essentially a rebirth from it all. They all had new masks if I can recall correctly when this album released tying into the rebirth of them all after having fought against the tragedy of losing their brother basically. So happy yall took a peak at this one much love to you both. ( I'm going off memory from when this song /album released so I might be off a little bit on exact details so dont come for me if I'm wrong, just write the correction so we can all learn, no one has no mfkn time for dickheads ya feel ? )

Hey - So the scene in the elevator where those 2 guys were getting shanked. There's background symbolism there. Those 2 guys getting shanked were the 2 brand new members of the band at the time - bassist and drummer - and this was their first song with them. The stabbing...they were essentially being "killed" into the band, after spending the whole video wheeling around in their wheelchairs and seeing the other members doing crazy shit. You don't see them actually playing their instruments with the band at any point in this video until they "get killed" in the elevator. The very next clip once they "die" is the new bassist slapping the bass, followed by the new drummer going crazy on the drums. Boom, they're dead, and now they are initiated members.

In the early 80s when I started to pay attention to music...sitting at the stereo trying to record songs off the radio to make mix tapes from, I started buying my first records and tapes. I had to hide them from my parents, one, because they didnt want me spending my money on it.....we were pretty poor at the time,, and two, my friend and I would have to ride our bikes around 10 miles down an old farm to market road to get to the nearest K-mart. One day, I forgot and left my tapes on the kitchen table. When I came home, they were gone, and no one knew anything...no one had touched them, they just disappeared....Mom! In hindsight, I know why she took them. She didnt know the music, but she saw the art on the music, and she didnt like it. Guns n Roses, with skulls, Quiet Riot with a chained up dude and a metal mask, Ozzy as a werewolf howling at the moon, Dio and their Demons, Kiss and their look. Im certain she didnt like the imagery, and was probably scared by the talk in the news about satanism, that scary metal music, Dungeons and Dragons and all that good ol news propaganda. Odd thing is, our family basically had nothing to do with religion or church, wasnt goody two shoes. Maybe it was just the sudden inundation of graphic images that seemed to be a new thing. My parents had their own music that had lewd sexual imagery and things not really considered appropriate for kids at the time, we went to rated r movies. Something about it worried her, yet here I sit, still listening....still no trail of dead bodies, torture or culturally unacceptable perversions. Whoodathunkit?

I love this song, I cannot watch the videos... but it is my understanding each of these things are how each member fears dying. They miss their friend, they are hurting, grieving, pissed off (because it's an emotion that happens). Snuff isn't what you think it is. It's not in the same context of hurting someone in the way you'd think --being called snuff. Korn does have the song Daddy, it was cathartic for Jonathan and many others, but it is very dark.

In this video, they band is 'killing off' their former selves (masks) in ways that reflect each members fears (dog attack, bird attack, ... etc). While being quite graphic, it is a way for the members to move on from their past selves. 🤘🔥🔥🤘

Let me just say this. Slipknot helped me through so many negative situations that I'm not sure how I would be able to handle them. Music generally, but Slipknot especially. The thing how I felt it was that if I was struggling with anger or hate towards someone, I did listen to Slipknot and could pass those feelings through the music just by listening it. No physical violence needed even I felt it was necessary and I wanted to hurt my bullies. I get it, it is not for everyone, but music has such a huge power that, who are we to judge what is good and what is not? The one you don't like, might be the one that saved someones life. Just keep that it mind next time you start judging the new Taylor Swift track we hear already thousand times.

Hehe, when I was a teen I used to listen to that kind of music, draw dark pictures, and write very dark poems about su*c*dе, nightmares, and the afterlife. My parents saw it but they never tried to do anything with that. Only watched and made sure I didn't try to harm myself or do something like that. They knew - it was my way to express myself, and deal with extreme emotions inside their little teenage girl :) But maybe it's because they are big Rammstein fans and this style of music doesn't surprise them XD I am very grateful they let me be myself and supported me all the time, whatever I wanted to do. Love them

Corey's is a little different. It's about him getting permanent writers block and not being able to write lyrics anymore. Basically being useless to the band. That's why he is staring at an empty piece of paper before he blows himself up.

Being 68 and having grown up as a teenager with Alice Cooper, nothing surprises me or if it does its art. I watched every season of the Walking Dead and I loved it. These videos, like some movies, can be so graphic but once you see how they are made it’s not so shocking anymore. And like you said the song without the video is great. To me there are several ways I could interpret it. It’s like looking at a piece of art in a museum. I love it!

Yeah! Capricorn represent! GOAT! ♑ - A slip-knot is the knot used to hold the noose in place, but you can tie a slip-knot (two words, hyphenated) and not turn it into a noose. Slipknot's "Snuff" is nothing. It is originally an unrequited love song, the music video is emotional but it isn't dark really. His live acoustic performance is even more emotional but that is only because the song is now done as a tribute to the late Paul Gray (bassist) and Joey Jordison (drummer)... Korn's DADDY on the other-hand you need to prepare yourself for that because as fans we were not even prepared for it to be on the album. The Slipknot equivalent to Daddy would be "Scissors" but it is A LOT easier to listen to and appreciate. "The Devil in I" is about the band members becoming sober after Paul Gray's drug overdose and the video is them shedding their old skins and habits and personalities, but also it became an initiation for the two newest members of Slipknot (they are the ones who get shanked by the band). Now they can bare the same scars as everyone else. As soon as I saw this pop up in my feed I was like "oh man BP is NOT gonna like this video".

The two guys in the wheelchairs that they stab up is two members that were brand new members replacing the bassist Paul grey that passed away, and the drummer Joey Jordinson because he had gotten a disease and he wasn’t able to play the drums for quite some time and he died pretty recently about a year or two ago… so it’s kinda like they’re inducting them into the band. Slipknot is the greatest metal band ever… EVER!!!! 9 guys making amazing music they got a DJ he was biting his hand off and at first corey taylor was doing more rap metal but now later in they’re career they’re still super heavy but corey has an amazing voice and they have some acoustic and clean vocal songs that are just amazing!!!

If you do ever get to the song “Snuff” you have to check out the live version with just Corey and an acoustic guitar. It’s heavy for him emotionally, and you get every sense of that in the live stripped down performance.

This music helps me and a lot of other people process our negative emotions in a non-destructive way. Have you ever been extremely angry about something you can't do anything about? This is music to help you through that time. Edit: Oh, and Snuff would be a lot more up your alley. The video isn't gory at all and the meaning of it is profound. If you haven't yet, I highly recommend Nero Forte.

I love how you keep it 100!!! Yes, the video is shocking and was meant to be that way. I am very happy that you can look past the parts you don't like to see how Amazing Slipknot is. You mentioned something about why you have not watched Snuff and Daddy yet. I will suggest that you check out Snuff, it's a great song and it is not as disturbing as you may have built up. In the same token Daddy is by far one of the hardest songs to listen to but you have to be ready for that and as a fan I love to see both reactions but of the 2 songs Daddy would be the hard one for you to listen to.

Corey/Slipknot - Snuff, & Korn - Daddy. Both are great songs, but have very sad messed up stories. Also Slipknot came out with a behind the lyrics video about this song, it's mainly about fears and overcoming them, AND the "shanking" scene is the initiation of the two new members.

i want to share something with you, BP & Don. it's a quote from the book Dune, by Frank Herbert, and it really helps explain the video and how each member is dealing with their fears. "I must not fear. Fear is the mindkiller. Fear is the little death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone, there will be nothing. Only I will remain." hope that helps explain the video and put it into perspective. sometimes we have to live in our fear, inhabit it in order to lose it or change it to useful energy.

The reason why people want you to listen to "Snuff" is because of Corey's clean singing. He does have a great voice and a lot of people still dont even know that. His version of Chris Isaac's "Wicked Game" is top notch, eventhough, so is Jack Black and Kyle Gass from Tenacious D's version of the same song.

Always makes me laugh when people are surprised when metal guys can sing. Metal singers often are some of the most extensively trained. Not always, but vocal talent is usually massive in metal. Disturbed's singer is actually classically trained and I believe his brother sings opera. Metal "cleans" are often some of the most impressive I've ever heard.
