Hey hon! So happy to see you exploring Istanbul - I lived and worked there 16 years ago and remember it fondly! Some quick tips: Istanbul is know as the city of seven hills so wherever you walk, expect there to be an incline at some point so be ready to break a sweat lol. If you don’t want Turkish men to converse with you, don’t make eye contact, don’t smile and don’t reply to them saying hi or whatever. In Turkish culture, women don’t interact with or respond to men on the street. Traditional Turkish coffee is made with the coffee grounds and shouldn’t be stirred unless you want to drink sludge haha. You don’t add milk or sugar - the sugar is added while the coffee is being made, not after :) Best of luck, Istanbul is a great city and most people are friendly and helpful! Just always be careful and aware of your surroundings and try to learn as much Turkish as possible, you won’t regret it!

Great to know. I’m travelling to Istanbul this August with my Granddaughter and although most of my clients are Turkish, I think I would be uncomfortable with all that attention from the men.
@chasingevents67304 ай бұрын
Saving this for future reference!! Thanks for the tip. I guess for the eye contact, I have read somewhere that if you make eye contact it means you’re like not scared of them, but I agree sometimes doing eye contact has bad side as well so just be careful based on your experience better don’t talk or engage if they greet you.

10 years ago, I visited Istanbul with my daughter's 6th grade class. I will admit I had the best time and the people treated me extremely well. As black man it was pretty different, and a number of people were running up to me asking could they take a picture with my daughter and me. I asked my daughters teacher what's the deal with that? He said in some regions of Turkey they've never physically seen a black person. They hugged us multiple times and was asking me where we from, if I was basketball fan, have I been to Disneyland, Magic Mountain, did I know Mike Tyson, etc. Being from California I told them I had been to Magic Mountain & Disneyland 100's time, and they got excited. The food was fresh and talk about giving us free meals is another story within itself. It was nothing but love. I plan on going back just to experience it again.

First I subscribed to your channel today because I enjoyed every minute. I went through this exact journey last year as a black Canadian relocating to Istanbul. Unfortunately, I ended up staying 3 weeks and pursued relocating to the Middle East (closer to Dubai). It was a great experience but I had 1 pet peeve, taxis are a scam. Take pictures of the metre before you leave the cab because every single time, I had to dispute the fare with Uber (they would tip themselves 100-200 lira). I stayed in Galata, close to Taksim. People are friendly. You will enjoy : ) any questions, I am here.

Hey your vids on Istanbul were on my suggestions so i clicked and wayched both episodes :-) I like how little editing there is so it felt very real. Im based in London, ethnicity from North Cyprus but ive been to Istanbul several times is my favourite city (would love to live there like you are). Even more inspiring that you're a single black lady from USA throwing yourself into Turkish culture as you have. Please be careful for pickpocketing especially in Taksim street and the Old town, if you're careful you'll be fine :) expect to see alot of stray cats :) My favorite places in Istanbul have to be the Kumpir (Jacket potatoe) in Ortakoy area (you must try it, amazing views and countless toppings to choose from compared to Europe. Also nearby is Dolmabahce palace, you're not allowed to take photos but its absolutely stunning inside, better than most royal palaces around the world. Lastly, please visit Buyukada island (via boat) one of the few islands close to Istanbul and very easily acceptable and i believe you can use your Istanbul travel card to get onto the ferry (but check beforehand). Buyukada island also known as Princess Islands is absolutely beautiful, with old wooden mansions, no cars allowed, its like a step back in time. It has amazing views and monestaries, shops and restaurants. Make sure to catch the last or second to last boat trip back to Istanbul! Otherwise there's hotels+ air b&bs on the islands. Enjoy! And look forward to seeing more of your experiences there. Also have cruise of the bosphoras especially as the sun is going down, nothing come close to it. Sultanahmet area is probably the most touristic part, taksim is the modern part and its where most of the nightlife is. Be careful with owners trying to get you into their shop, they're very good at pressuring to buy something:) if you say no thank you and move on they may try just continue to walk, any show of attention back they'll hook onto it like bait 😅 otherwise the Turks try to interact out of friendliness.

Hi there. I used Uber years ago so I don't recall but there must be a way to file a complaint on the drivers that don't cancel and are not moving. I used to have that option on a different app in Asia called "Grab" and I could report via message and the operator would call me to chat. After explaining that the driver didn't show up but also didn't cancel they said they will handle it. Sure enough in about 2min the ride was finally cancelled by the driver with some dumb excuse like technical problem.
