Pure genius! Sly & The Family Stone broke so many barriers. To have a band with a woman playing such brilliant trumpet, amazing musicians who were both back and white white, to mix it all up and show the flash, the genius that Prince later exemplified, was so groundbreaking for those times in the 1960-70’s. This track is a banger, still!

Just had a listen to this after hearing an Arrested Development song which samples its drum track. They were lucky that those early 70's producers liked to pan instruments to the extreme left or right, and decided to put Greg's drums virtually on their own (apart from a hint of organ) in the right channel for that horn break. I guess that not many people in those days would have been aware of the concept of sampling.

When you look at the top Soul/R&B releases in 1968 you find that, despite the originality, professionalism and artistic acumen on display, there was a sameness about all of it; this song was the exception. I am certain that many A&R guys were scratching their heads wondering what just happened. I don't think it's an exaggeration to refer to this song as a watershed in popular music. It changed the game the way James Brown's Cold Sweat changed soul into funk.

Man, this has to be the genesis of that one riff Miles Davis wrote for the Jack Johnson album. On the original album, it's the weird break down near the end of the first side where everyone stops soloing and goes into playing a unison riff. John McLaughlin quoted it on the first Mahavishnu Orchestra album, and Miles jammed on it as late as the Agharta album.
