Aikido the way that doesn't work kata dori ikkyo is the focus of episode #2. In this episode Lenny sly sensei of the #roguewarriors training compound completely tears apart the traditional aikido technique kata dori ikkyo on how and why it doesn't work. Sly sensei demonstrates this technique with his uke Rod demesa and having Rod 100% completely resisting every attempt that sly sensei makes to actually do this technique. as you can clearly see that sly sensei has a next to impossible time trying to demonstrate this and that is exactly the point here. Sly sensei makes several attempts to execute and fails every time. There are multiple attempts from different angles and different hand positions and it's still a NO go. Then sly sensei even shows how you could possibly do this technique using tenShin aikido evasions and then move into kata dori and still unsuccessful. So bottom line kata dori ikkyo is complete garbage.

I give a bow of respect to Sensei Sly for teaching the truth. I studied Martial Arts for many years and my last Sensei was so fast that when we sparred if I my fist even was able to make contact with his shoulder I considered it a good day for me, and that was serious training I was doing then. And for the viewers out there who are reading this, look at my picture. ...do you see my nose is bent in three different directions? Yeah, so are all my knuckles as well. What Sensei Sly is teaching us is the best way to walk away from a street fight. I'd much rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6 after any fight and by watching Sensei Sly and Respecting his teachings your odds of Not being carried away from the fight increase every time you watch what Sensei Sly is teaching.

I got to say, I learned something I also haven’t experienced myself, great insights, I have been surprise attacked from the rear outside the Dojo, you are absolutely right, I have yet to see it done by the wrists as you pointed out, as I remember though we did learn from Shihan Reynosa the grab and get to the rear, so I allowed it to remain in my teachings and Test Requirements. But to keep my arms and Ukes grab level, that heel kick to their sac before they slam you on the ground is a great Idea to loosen up the hold to get to the usual way to apply stuff. Love this one, I have to make these changes, now and stop teaching those rear attacks that way, I do get and know the correct application to apply the techniques hard and fast with the continuous movement to keep from being pounded, no worries about the lingo, my fan base is on your ship and learning from you regardless, we don’t use it, but we know where you are coming from and many of us used to be far worse, I am one of those! Looking forward to the next one, you could make many of these, but the way you just eliminated all the Ushiro attacks, I’d say you covered about 20% of Exam requirements, thank you! 😝

I also never liked Ikkyo, I felt only if he doesn’t resist me could I effectively execute it, but it was a requirement and like you pointed out, it’s understood to take Ukemi for it, I tried using a deflection which led to an entirely different technique so it turned out becoming a Kote Gaeshi like you did in this video, but you know what When I just popped him as my Uke came in for Kata Tori, there was no need for any technique, I was actually intending to do Nikyo, that hit backed him off and he left his arm partially out so he couldn’t give any resistance at all and I was home free, and nailed it down easily. But it was that offensive Kao Tsuki that made it possible. Great video, so true, Sensei Gerrit helped me realize that, he never made anything easy!

You can use shoulder to twist hand and fingers,in combination with hip twist, from static grab position, which should give pain to wrist joint and fingers from shoulder crank in combo with lower body twist (tenkai)then drop weight into ikkyo, step is not always necessary,eg uke left shoulder grab, cross grab right hand then crank hand and fingers with small shoulder twist, which should give immediate pain to ukes fingers and wrist, through there resistance, almost turns into a nikkyo variation to start. I do totally agree atemi to face is most effective, also as you have said you have to apply technique before uke has grabbed you to be most effective, thanks Lenny for all the hard work you are putting in to making Aikido Effective, and for sharing and putting it out there,i am definitely a fan,and also train aikido, hope you get my message,Jamie Sensei in New Zealand,in 2 weeks for Seminar, will be my second one,all the Best man,you definetly inspire me.

Lenny again totally correct ..many times been in this situation. . Doesn't work a punch in the face does. If the arm is still flailing as has happened maybe twice in 10 years . Then take it . But nearly every grabbing technique in aikido if involves using 2 hands doesn't work .unless you hit them first . I am speaking from first hand experience as a prison officer . Once hit or suitably distracted .I have found that they all work .just not in the sharp crisp beautiful dojo way . Be prepared for them to not play along with your aikido make believe. . Be ready to change quickly. . Tomiki aikido has many flaws especially this modern version of it . But the randori with full resistance. . Has made it possible for me to move counter and not be shaken if my first technique doesn't work. We always kept it real .randori with full strikes elbows , knees etc. We went to the ground practiced sacrifice throws .. the Tomiki we practiced was very different. . But you have got to think outside the box . That's why I love Lennys aikido. Well done sir.

You are completly right. If the attacker is not disruputed or surpriced first, you will be disrupted or surpriced instead. All my Ikkios use to suck because of resistance and position issues. I made it work for me with a small sidestep. (This works also when pushed up against a wall). So he grabs with his right and I grab his right wrist with my left hand and I lift it a little and push it towards my self (Meaning his grabbing right hand is weakened and it cant escape and I can control his body). Make the sidestep so your right shoulder are in a strait line with his head and punch it strait aswell (On the nose fx). Instantly after your punch you grab his grabbing right hand with your right hand and turn it using your chest as resting point. From here you know the rest.. Grab his upper forarm close to his elbowjoint and pull towards your own lower left ribs. From there turn your body 180 around his arm and pin him flat on the ground or smash him in or up against the wall. Hope this make sense :P. Ty Lenny.

Yes!!!!!!! Brother now we are talking real fighting to a point,,but not street fighting. In a real street fighting or robbery no one is going to grab you a wild punch or a boxers punch is coming and it just happens,I have been in a few fights and it’s never ever has it been fair or straight up and down fight. Real karate fighting it has to be full hitting on any part of the body and people must be able to get hit in the face with a punch or kick ,in a street fight there are no rules everything goes, that rock, that stick, that bottle and you get hit with no hesitation from the other guy and they ‘re more than one attacker. So I agree with you this is awesome you are doing people a justice from these candy ass karate schools that get people killed, kata and techniques are for a good workout and that’s it no one is going to throw a straight punch or let you know that punch is coming. I tell my students to find a boxing club to join and combine the two find a wrestling club and learn to combine all three and become a street fighter and not a karate fighter, because bad guys or that other fighter just might know what you know,it only takes one punch to take you out. Brother you have evolved from your earlier tapes now you understand the survival of the street fight,I love this keep going and growing. Oh and get some street guys and pay them to fight your students and see what happens. Take care can’t wait to see more.

Hi Lenny, first of all love your videos, they are great! Second, I think this series is very important and raises a lot of unanswered questions to the surface. Especially from Aikido pratitioners. In my Aikido training, I always look for the "real side" of the techniques and try to compare them to a real life situation. This video was excellent and I understand completely what you said and demonstrated. The only thing I was missing and wanted to see by the end of the video is how ikkyo can really works (if any...). I know that there are many "problematic" techniques in Aikido that simply don't work in real life. So I guess my question is, how can we truly benefit from the "problematic" technique in a way that can help us achieve success in reality? Hope I explained myself correctly lol. Thanks again Sensei for all the wonderful videos that you create and have a good week. Idan from Israel

He's back in Florida now but was under a guy named John Denora that passed several years ago. I ran into this alot as I used to be 240 lbs and 6 ft. I always had alot of trouble applying techniques with bodybuilder type, I know atemi is important but it always frustrated me with some techniques I just couldn't make work. Thats probably on me not the technique. Anyways I will keep watching as I always do. There is no one to train with in Georgia that I know of anymore so I stick to katana and bokken work that I can do by myself. Please keep doing your stuff. I have really enjoyed these 2 videos. I don't study Aikido, I'm a Krav Mega, BJJ, Muay Thai guy, but I respect all arts as long as they're effective. However, I have more respect for a sensei or sifu or instructor who is intellectually honest enough to question his training and embellish or improve upon his chosen discipline. Where would Jiu Jitsu be without the Gracies? It would still just be an Olympic sport. Keep up the good work. We have to get away from this intellectual inbreeding that only serves to create an echo chamber that reinforces losing tactics.

Very well done. In my style of Hsing-I and Ba Gua "defanging the snake" ranging from extreme impairment to total destruction of the limbs-arms and legs-(essentially a tactical concept to apply) always comes before entering to attack main targets. You must remove an opponents weapons if the eyes (sight) (breath interruption) throat solar plexus and/or balance are not available immediately. Even in Chinese Chin Na, you're told right from the beginning (if you have a good combat instructor) that any and all Chin Na locks are "gifts", not easily given by the opponent and therefore you should not expect that your locking technique in and of itself will be effective. All Judo techniques should also include some form of debilitating atemi-before-the throw.

Again, I'm not from Aikido, but I do appreciate your straight up, no BS approach to techniques and Martial Arts in general. To play devils advocate, if you say there is no benefit to the technique of showing foot work, postures, atemi or locks, why does it exist? Just for demo purposes?

Aikido is said to have over 10,000 techniques. How is that possible? Easy. Ikkyo applied exactly the same from the left -hand grab and the right-hand grab is not considered the same technique. It is considered 2 separate techniques. Also, Ikkyo applied from katadori is a separate technique then ikkyo applied from munetsuki (straight punch). So we have one application (Ikkyo) ... 2 sides (left and right) ....and 2 different attacks (katadori and munetsuki) which equal 4 separate techniques. Catch my drift here? I believe the founder wanted his applications to work from any attack. Hence, why Ikkyo works for other applications, but not from Katadori. In theory, katadori Ikkyo looks viable, but it was probably never battle hardened. I hope this helps :)

Lenny, great videos, really appreciate the effort you put into them. One request..... When demonstrating hand deflections, by necessity they have to be very fast and that makes it difficult to follow exactly the motions you are doing while under combat conditions. It would be great if you could film certain aspects of the video in slow motion. Thanks again.... JohnH

Another informative video, thank you. I find that the approach that you have taken in this video (and for that matter, Aikido generally) very similar to what we would learn in Jeet Kune Do -- direct, simple, fast and effective. I don't like the criticisms that you get. Seems that keyboard experts know nothing. I think that many of them arise out of two misunderstandings (at least two, LOL) that I see in many people. One is that they fail to distinguish training, sport fighting, and self-defence, having little or no experience in any of these. Second, they do not understand that techniques have a proper time, place, and context for their applications. I follow your videos because I always wondered in what ways to properly apply Aikido in self-defence.

thank Lenny. there a video about a student being bullied in the train. he deflect it while the bully trying to get his shoulder and drop down. it is not ikkyo though. i agree with you about this ikkyo problem since ikkyo is trying to lift an elbow. it is impossible. bent elbow is very strong. even untrained people will naturally stiffened the elbow if somebody suddenly grabs it. it is a general rule in fighting to keep elbow low or at least alive not being in straightened and controlled

I agree that Kata dori Ikkyo doesn't work unless the opponent move their head after the strike, which mean they are of balance and already raised their shoulder and put themselves into the lock halfway. That is the assumption in Iwama style Aikido. ´ If the strike is successful or the opponent is not off balance after the strike you do another technique. I don't think this situation would occur very often in reality, but the technique in itself are useful to train if you understand the assumption that is needed to perform it.

An adjustment to my first question After the should grab is there enough time to strike the face with the opposite elbow is what I should have asked. Because I keep thinking what about elbow strikes.

When katadori ikkyo is done, there is no grab. It is intercepted before the grab happens. Remember, don't get punched, kicked, grabbed, or taken to the ground....unless it's on your own terms. So let's assume you wanted to be grabbed or were not receptive and it happened by surprise. I don't think an elbow is viable due to distance and resistance. When grabbed, the attacker can push you out if you try to irimi...and likewise, he can pull you in...if you step out. Can an elbow be landed? Sure, but you have to create a perfect storm for it to happen (during a katadori grab). If the uke grabs your left shoulder...a right elbow will be hard because it can be blocked by his free hand. It would certainly be most probable if you tenkan to the outside to create a bend in the ukes wrist...bending the wrist reduces his resistance ability. From there you can probably land a left elbow. hope this helps. I say abandon the ikkyo and just kiriage/suriage into iriminage ;)

+Alphonso Frett I all honesty no. If you're grabbed expect to be hit with the attackers free hand almost simultaneously.

42 years of Aikido with most of it teaching and I have to agree to - lets pick a number - 95% of what Sly sensei is saying. Any difference would simply be personal interpretation. I have never met him, but have come to a similar conclusion. That 5% difference may also be that, Aikido can other than self defense - or self protection. Regardless...nice development and explaining of technique.

On so many aikido demo's the student seems to do a dance around the sensei cooperating on the technique. I like to see what doesn't work when you get resistance such as in this video, not some coreographed technique.

100%. I've been on an aikido break for a few years and been doing bjj. I've tried this against bjj judo cross trained guys and it doesn't work. They just look at you with the wtf are you doing look. I did find a spot where elbow control to a messy sort of ikkyo does work, but it's from the ground stopping a cross side transition.

Love the video Lenny. Again there is only one small thing i don't agree on, and that is with the atemi. As a bouncer i cant begin to tell you how many times i have seen or experienced someone doing a one hand lapel grab and then punching almost immediately after. What i see though, is the death grip they get. you will see a guy getting punched in the face and whipped around everywere and still for some reason they just wont let go. lol stupid as hell but it is what it is. You can even see it in early gracie fights people would get a death grip of the gi, and punch, and punch, and punch. The gracies had all sort of different approaches to technique, but even when they precursor their technique with a strike to the face it didn't really break the grip on the gracies gi. But agree 100% there are better techniques that can be done in that situation. I think it does a bit of disservice to teach that as long as you can sucker punch someone in the face they will immediately let go, but everything else you said was spot on. On the flip side of that atemi, the eye poke does seem to make people let go and grab their eye, different reflexsive action i gues. All in all, another great video!!i cant wait to see what you cover next. Do you plan on making these weekly videos? bi weekly? monthly? just curious if this series has a "PLAN"

+James Adamik James thank you for commenting. I too was a bouncer for a long time and i too have seen what you said being grabbed and punched and being whipped around at the same time. I didn't want to go into that too much in the video because that would've taken more time to explain that and demonstrate that. So I did the minimum. Although I have experienced it for myself both on the receiving end and the giving end. The difference between the two is when I was dishing it out they never had time to punch me and.... When I have been grabbed I struck them immediately because if I didn't I knew what i was in store for and wanted no part of that. Although when I was on the receiving end of it the punch to the face has yet to fail me and the response I got was exactly what I showed in the video and I've fall prey to this several times. You have to strike fast and strike hard and having the mindset of survival goes a long way. As for the new series, my plan is to do a new video on this topic once a week.

Let me start by saying that ALL of my commentary towards you has been respectful, still is, and except for encouraging you to "catch flies with honey" I've mostly agreed with you! I’ve even applied suriage as taught by you and Calderon-sensei online to shomentsuki attacks in a dojo within the past year when other stuff didn’t work, and watched uke fly! So I hope that you will believe me when I tell you that I once attacked Kevin Choate-sensei katadori, resisted his ikkyo, and almost went flying to the ground! From memory he gently went around my strength with a gentler wrap around my arm with his hands, maybe softened his legs a bit, and the next thing I knew he’d almost driven my forehead into the mat! I remember being grateful later that I hadn’t resisted him while he was demonstrating technique in front of everybody or he probably WOULD have put me through the floor! As I’ve said already I admire the bujutsu style of your technique and the gist of what you’ve said in the past (not that you care, but I do!). I’ve wondered why so many dojos don’t teach Koshinage and Jujinage (how can you have a martial art without a hip throw?), why some skip Iriminage and Kokyunage in basics classes, why so many instructors never EVER grab-attack strongly when it’s what O-Sensei (according to Saito and Saotome shihandai) always insisted on, etc. I think that your frustration has paralleled my curiosity and many who are senior to me have also had those thoughts from time to time. HOWEVER, now I have to wonder: Are you saying Aiki (or what some call Musubi or Kokyu) is bullshit too? Are you saying that what George Ledyard provides in this video as a rudimentary example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sIeVf4R8o8ynaac Or what Dan Harden does here in a more advanced example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5DZeqKlg82VeNU Or what Hiroshi Ikeda-shihan is probably doing here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZvXf5-OYraMntk …is all garbage? Which ones are and which ones aren’t? Because even implying that Kevin got on the mat and did ANY play acting with ANY technique, is kind of bewildering to me. But with an attack and technique that I’ve felt work personally from the man to the point that it made me recommit to my training for a time… Well, I am very interested in your response! Kevin studied under Saotome, who studied under Yamaguchi and O-Sensei. Reynosa studied under several including Seagal, who studied under MANY shihandai including Koichi Tohei, who studied under O-Sensei. Do you believe in ki-extension like Seagal does? Do you believe that he really could not not lift Koichi Tohei, or do you suspect that to be fake? God’s honest truth: Until today, it never occurred to me to even ask…

Great video as always Lenny. I want to ask you and I hope I am not being a grammar nazi about this but isn’t the way that you teach your Aikido, Aikijutsu (or Aikijujitsu: since no one tells me the difference) due to how you are showing the practicality of the techniques rather than using only “flowing” techniques? Again not being a prick or a grammar nazi here, just wondering.
