Great video Lenny! I'm forming myself as a Aikido intructor, because I belive, aikido can be as efective as any martial art. You only have to teach his practical aplication to the techniques, and they will be efective! Our aikido branch was created by Minoru Mochizuki with te mind set of making Aikido WORK in real situations. That's how my Shihan theach me and how, one day I want to pass it on.

Rogue Warriors exploded into my life last year, when looking for aikido on the 'Tube, and you have restored my faith in the practicality of this art. 'Martial' = combat. Many 'arts' I looked at were mainly for show. I had a great friend in the Air Force who trained aikido. Influenced my thoughts in a huge way when he said, "Judo lands the other guy on his back - aikido lands him on his head." From early on I knew self-defense meant violence, but to accomplish it with serenity. I was never near a dojo long wnough for aikdo. Found Yang-style Tai Chi Juan. Good training in balance, energy and centre. Progressed naturally to Wing Chun techniques, to develop power, speed and accuracy, . Now you have blessed me by a return to what I realise is my first love - aikido. From 'circular' energy, to 'triangle', now the 'square' completes the picture. Necessity requires technique. Technique means application. Application brings an effect. That technique HAS to be effectIVE. Israelis taught me Krav Maga basics. If there's one style that cuts out ALL the b/s KM is the s***. So I totally get what you're doing at the Compound. Wing chun is a development. KM is a development. Simpler the better is my motto. (And I am competely at peace and harmony using extreme force . . so's you know . .) **Subscribed** !

Hi Sly. Greeting from Vietnam. Been following your channel since last year and was very much in love with it. Having practiced Aikido for over 10 years, I share the same thoughts and concerns with you regarding the direction and future of modern Aikido. The current dancing and taking the fall of contemporary Aikido really get on my nerves. I believe Aikido is a true martial art and do not want it to become a tea ceremony. Many thanks for giving me inspiration. Keep up the good work!

Well said, Sensei! Like you said, our teachers' teacher used to practice severely! He once did a randori demonstration with real knives. There was also Yoshio Kuroiwa, a former street fighter who became a Hombu shihan. Hiroshi Tada's Aikido has been pretty severe too. If I'm not mistaken he's the last surviving 9th dan in Aikikai! I don't much care what people say about Aikido, but some Aikido STUDENTS out there need to know the truth....

@shihonage
@shihonage 7 жыл бұрын
I am with you 100%. O Sensei actually said that Aikido is supposed to evolve with the times, that it's a living art, but nobody listened. It got calcified into these ritual dances. Aikido HAS to have answers to more modern attacks. And these answers can be stolen from other arts, as long as they are properly integrated with Aikido footwork. Frankly I think my old classic Japanese Sensei, with his focus on "self-development" technique, betrayed me. That became obvious when I first tried roughhousing with an untrained person, who completely owned me when I tried to "put an ikkyo" on them. There was not enough jiyu-waza, not enough resistance training, no henka-waza, no realistic attacks practiced, so good luck responding with stylized ikkyo to someone who has practiced how to take the back and put on a choke for just a few weeks. It took me years to figure out why that kind of Aikido didn't work. You train people in "something", that makes them feel more secure, and yet you don't actually secure them. I KNOW that most female shodans in my old school would be knocked out by an angry 15-year-old girl before they even knew what hit them. In my new school, which disposed of all the Sensei-worship and focuses on street reality, the same kind of female shodan would actually be able to fend off your average street hobo. Because guess what, the training is more dynamic, more resistant, and there's this fresh stream of innovation here that is not present in Calcified Aikido (tm). When you teach your students "self-development" posing as a martial art, and never even draw a distinct difference... you become kind of a dick. That's part of the reason why I stopped seeing my old Sensei. He's a nice man, enlightened and all, but I just don't... I can't... respect his approach. Seagal Sensei was the one person in Aikido community, a pioneer, who tried to evolve the art to be REAL. "Learn to feel what's real", he said. That is very important. And then the entire community shit on him for decades. You're doing what needs to be done, Lenny. We may not be able to compete with something as tightly specialized as MMA, nor do we need to - but an Aikido school has to do the basic service to its students, in arming them to be effective against assault.

Kenny you are very precise with the understanding of Aikido. To make the viewer such as myself understand that , in a self defense situation, you have to defend your life & or your loved ones. Tradition is fine ,but practicality is another side of the token here. I appreciate what you are saying & agree. Modern times are NOW & there has to be change in the direction of the practicing of the way Aikido has been. I AGREE ALL THE WAY. We will meet.

Love your art and philosophy. As a jujitsu practitioner I see practical application in your approach to technique both mental and physical. To be honest I see another application of jujitsu and your lack of the modern combat approach turned me off from the local aikido schools in my area as I attempted to cross trained for 6 months at a local dojo. I was told by a visiting aikido school to our jujitsu school that our approach was too violent and I was floored. You my friend are the real deal.

Sir, I use this technique as my primary control hold for police work because it is so effective at all levels of resistance. I like the fact a suspect can be taken to the ground or projected into things or other suspects if the situation demands it. I tell my trainees to keep aware of their surroundings so they can make maximum use of their environment. Please keep up the ramps. Your reasoning is why I left aikido 23 years ago for traditional jujitsu. Watching your videos has made me reevaluate and give it a second try. Stay safe and God bless, David

"Sorry for the three-minute rant." Preach, Sensei! As someone new to Aikido (less than six months), I've already come to respect the power of the techniques. With that said, there is a lack of practical application in Aikido as it is classically practiced. There are techniques that, though fun to practice, would simply take too long in a real world situation; you'd be shot, stabbed, or punched in the time it took you to do them. Aikido has become very important to me, and it needs more people like you emphasizing its real world application.

Lenny, great self-defence vids. yet imho, the spirit of your practice seems more akin to jujitsu instead of aikido. Pain compliance for self-defence is great and should be a part of any martial artist's arsenal but if it is the only (or your default) option, the we should consider the limitations of the training. you quote saotome but i dont think he relies on pain compliance, even if he could. So much of aikido training seem to fall on the extreme of either Street effective fighters like yourself trying to prove to haters that "Aikido works" or aiki bunnies hopping around in happy dojos talking about love peace and harmony (i blame Aikikai's shitty training model for that). As for the "martial arts is violent" mindset i thought O'sensei created aikido to specifically transform the spirit of (seemingly constantly angry) people like yourself and O'sensei's aikido is so much more than physical technique. If it's all about handling violence using physical techniques rather than the cultivation of the spirit expressed thru the internal control of the body, then Osensei must have been talking a lot of bullshit, a lot. You may be a master of external aikido forms but you seem pretty far from the OSensei's goal of spiritual and physical unity within oneself. youve got some great combat stuff, yeah, and no doubt your street aikido look effective but If i wanted to jump on the aikido bandwagon now, id take a serious look at Bill Gleason or George Ledyard's wagon of Aiki, where physical, mental and spiritual components come together according to the principles stated by the founder. the way it was before it got diluted by modern Aikikai's bullshit technical curriculum and business oriented ranking system. yes yes, so much bullshit aikido practitioners and their dance pattern waza. While i agree that Osensei aikido wasnt finished and he wanted us to continue the work, i doubt he would have wanted us to go down the street aikido mentality that you seem to be on. The window of opportunity is only open now because previously 'hidden' information on the training of aikido is now being disseminated by certain internal art practitioners. Have you considered that If Osensei wanted to continue breaking bones/heads, he would have stuck with Daito Ryu but instead he created a new art and philosophy, aikido. And for what? You think just so people like you would have another bone breaking martial art (kinda like Daito ryu lite)??? I dont think so. Lenny, you want to do your street effective stuff go ahead BUT please don't mix your "martial arts is about violence" view with that of OSensei's philosophy on aikido ie conflict resolution and a path for peace. So it's not just a path for f**king people up, for that you've got jujitsu/aikijitsu and whole loads of other ball-busting martial arts. And you want to show the world what aikido is. Is that because you think it's a beautiful art to be shared with the world or is it done just to prove the doubters/haters wrong, to shut them up? You and me, we've got the same goal but different motivations. Great self-defence videos though. And i would love to see a video of you and Corky Quakenbush discussing the common ground of your respective aikido 'styles'.

Well said. If I just wanted to kill and maim people, why would I bother with Aikido? Krav Magra or something like that would be better. To me the ultimate martial achievement would be to be able to handle the most violent attack without anyone being injured. Probably impossible, but a worthy goal to focus one's training. Gleason, Ledyard, Dan Harden, Salludin Mohahmed (wrong spelling, sorry), all those folks are going where I want to go. But for now, if pain compliance is all I can get to work at my skill level, then I better watch the rest of this vid, pobably wiht the sound off.

I completely agree with what you're stating here, Lenny. I for one have practiced a style/form of Aikido for 21 years which is a very brutal version. My sensei was kind of a rebel to the Aikido community who taught his style which was called "Musho kishin budo" which conveys the thought of "reacting without thinking" in a split second to an attack. That's means NOTHING about it is going to be soft, gentle or painless. Aikido is a MARTIAL ART. Since when, is a martial art meant to be gentle and caring?? Aikido is from the era of Samurais, which were not gentle at all.

The problem in Aikido is NOT learning and training in "classical" forms, the problem is in not making the effort to truly explore the essence of what those forms were originally designed to teach. The ultimate purpose of classical forms is to help students evolve beyond them. They are not ends in themselves but a way to help each student create their own aikido. Congratulations on finding your path.

I totally agree with what you are saying! my first Art was Aikido and unfortunately didn't get to finish, but I do still apply some of Aikido waza in my TKD self defense, why not it does work in a combat since. I do not agree with the dancing aspects just like I am not a fan of sport Karate that TKD has gone to. Martial Arts is just that MARTIAL it's not a hobby or a game, it's meant to defend! I would love to see more kickass video's sir, Thank you for your little rant, I have been doing a fair share myself. Martial arts are getting soft. Please continue what you are doing OSS!

Just found this video, excellent portrayal of the Aikido roots. I do not study Aikido but have preached this same thing for years about Aikido. My background is in Ninjutsu and it was great to read the article and it mention it. Koppojutsu is something we studied with our locks and strikes. I'm not sure how it is taught these days, I began in the late 80s when it was not so watered down. Keep up the great work and exposing the truth of your art. Again I do not study Aikido but I see the techniques and principles that I learned from the jujitsu side of my style.

Franz Braun well for starters if you call yourself a 6 dan when I attack you should already be in motion. No 6 dan should be letting kihon waza take place.

I did a lot of very similar techniques in Silat, although we usually applied the standing locks to tap rather than ukemi. Why do Aikidoka practice to ukemi rather than to tap? (never formally trained Aikido, so I legitimately have no idea)
@salsalover69laters
@salsalover69laters 7 жыл бұрын
The tap is great if one on one but with multiple attackers you need to be able to throw so you can be ready for the next attacker. This is my opinion anyway of why throwing tchniques are important. Aikido comes from sword culture and sword culture was rarely one on one.
@Timonsaylor
@Timonsaylor 7 жыл бұрын
Oh you should absolutely know how to throw, but in a lot of these throws that are initiated via lock, Ukemi seems unrealistic. Every tried to lock and throw someone who doesn't know how to take proper ukemi? You don't throw them, you just end up making them go "ow." Pain compliance is largely about the other person being trained to comply properly to the feeling. Someone on the streets or in the ring isn't going to put his feet together and roll with your lock - he's just gonna end up with a fucked up arm.

Yes the ukemi is used simply for the benefit of the person doing the technique. I guess in the traditional aikido sense taking ukemi also teaches the student to blend with the defense once the initiative has been taken away, but in reality most people would get seriously hurt. I have watched some videos on Silat over the years and I found it has many similarities (from my limited knowledge to aikido especially in the triangular foot work and entering into the attack. It was nice to see another style which seems to have a similar philosophy as this, as everything else in aikido is taken from other martial arts. Its the entering or at least triangular footwork that makes aikido different, not the locks or throws. I'm curious of your thoughts on this?
@salsalover69laters

Oh sorry I misread your comment. I am no expert in aikido but the person roles out of a throw because his balance has been taken. The average person would just fall awkwardly and often dangerously rather than role/flip out of it, but the throw itself can still be executed if balance is taken. The lock may begin the technique but if you don't take the attackers balance away the throw cannot work. Pain compliance can be used but that's actually not the true aim. Control of the body is the aim through the joint. Once you have control of the attackers center they cannot resist successfully without like you say having your wrist or elbow severely damaged which from a self defense perspective is OK anyway. However I think most people unless they are on PCP or whatever, they will be easily controlled through these locks in oder to be thrown. In a real encounter I wouldn't care if the person couldn't flip out of the throw and I would prefer they coudn't get back up. You'll find some really good aikido practitioners will not feel much pain during locks because their wrists have become very flexible after years on the mat (Not me lol). However, this does not stop the control of them through the wrist, it just doesn't hurt them much while they are being controlled.

Oh absolutely, but this isn't exactly a helpful response to me. I understand what you're saying, but it doesn't clarify WHY ukemi is utilized. As we seem to agree, I'm not exactly willing to trust that pain compliance will work on most truly aggressive people trying to hurt you, when half the time it doesn't really work on the uninitiated. Just teaching proper compliance and use of tapping seems to do the job Ukemi does in a more time and energy efficient manner. You can argue "Well yeah but it's certainly necessary for certain throws like that stiff arm to the neck (forgive my lack of any sense of japanese terminology) thing" but even then it tends to assume that the opponent is just naturally going to fall. In Silat, instead of teaching the partner to take ukemi, you hook your foot behind their ankle and walk past them in order to force them to fall.

Hi Lenny, thank you for your great videos. I am 42yo and I also learned of Aikido from seeing Above the Law at about 14yo and instantly saw it as the most realistic style of self defense I had ever seen. However, as most of us find out that style of Aikdido is not found in most of Aikikai dojos. There are some teachers here and there that add a little here and there. I am in Australia but my first 2 Sensei's were originally Cops from L.A. who were 2nd Dan karate before swapping to Aikido as their main art later. So they had more of a real world understanding of confrontation. They would say stuff like if you grab my right wrist with your right wrist I'm not gonna bother using aikido but just kick you in the stomach as you are leaving yourself so open in your attack lol. But they still taught under Aikikai in a University so there was a real limit of practical stuff still especially as most of the class were complete beginners. Anyway, finally from you I get to see the awesome Tenshin style I have etched in my mind and practiced myself from watching Seagal, but now with so much explanation of things I never understood from watching footage, like the deflections Tenshin uses and how they are applied and work and why they are used which Aikikai never had. This is just fantastic brother - after all these years I finally can understand what Seagal was doing and why! The following is old video on Satome Sensei and describes the same stuff from the article but while seeing him in action and actually demonstrating where the bone-breaking techniques can be applied where necessary - like you said, you can only harmonize and reflect what the uke gives you in an attack, so if that's gonna be a knife attack to kill you, then you harmonize and return that energy. That's the point Saotome is trying to make in my opinion. That harmony means your application whether soft or devastating depends on the energy your attacker/uke gives you to harmonize with. Hence, of course there's a place to break or kill someone on the street. I remember almost being mugged by 2 guys at night while out with my wife at the time. I sensed the attack coming before they got close and the guys stopped and after a few seconds they walked away from the two directions they came from (were going to ambush us). My thoughts during those seconds was which guy was gonna come first and how I was gonna throw them through the shop window, not giving them love and compassion. (I believe they sensed that, being the sort of cowards that would ambush us). refer from 9:30 (ikkyo) in following vid. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rpDSq3yklrCjgqs Also, people like Gozo Shioda also has videos on how he says Aikido that does not use atemi is not aikido. How the atemi at the start before the 'technique' is started is what actually allows the technique to have any remote chance of working. Anyway, you can get all these vids off Stanly Pranins website if anyone wants them. Thanks again Lenny... you are right, more teachers need to come forward and join you in this. Unfortunately, there are no Tenshin people in Australia (unless you know of someone? lol). Peace brother and thanks!
