Hello, Another great presentation. It appears that I will spend most the afternoon watching many of your videos. Of my many outdoor adventures, the scariest was a BIG bear encounter at Yosemite national park in April of 1974. I was trout fishing at Tenaya creek and happened to spot the bear on the opposite side of the Tenaya creek. Fortunately the BIG BEAR did not see me as he or she was engaged in destroying a fallen log. The BEAR was fresh out of hibernation and was looking for insects in the fallen log. I quickly made a silent but hasty retreat back to my campsite.

A mother bobcat and her half grown kitten. Went around a bend in the trail and walked up within 20yds of them before we saw one another. She started towards me and when I started backing up she turned and they ran off. Exciting and terrifying at the same time.

Scariest animal encounter: 1997 while camped at Pamelia Lake... woke up in the morning, unzipped my tent and start putting my boots on. Looked up, saw a huge black bear staring at me across a log on the ground about 15' away. My first thought - where are my 7 and 8 year old nieces (who were camped with us)? Quite an adrenaline charged moment. Duffy lake! Great hike anytime of the year, but wow! In the snow it looks even better. Did you know that you can scramble up to the top of Duffy Butte for a spectacular view of the area? It's well worth the climb, and not the least bit technical. Great video, nice to see Duffy Lake draped in snow.

Yes, I too thought it was much more beautiful in the snow!

My scariest time was in northern Minnesota. Following my norm and hiking animal trails, I got into a heavy tangle of underbrush. On the otherwise wad a large downed tree, as I got closer a low rumbling growl came from the tree. It was a summer bear den and I was about 15 feet from it, but couldn't see it!

Great video! I have been to over 700 Oregon Lakes so far. Duffy Lake and the rest of the 8 Lakes Basin are still on my to-do list. My scariest encounters with wildlife would be a toss-up between encountering a large Wolf after emerging from a climb up the rocks out of McFarland Lake, and a time that I startled a large heard of Elk while hiking cross-country to Emerald Lake by myself. Elk can make the ground shake when they stampede through a forest. However, my 16 and 18 year old Cockatoos can exceed 120dB and can bite like a pair of pruning shears... they can scare a lot of people, too! :) Keep up the great hiking videos!

Oh a wolf would be scary! If Duffy Lake is still on your to-do list, I highly suggest going end of September. No bugs and little to no people :).

Loved this episode! I've seen probably at least 6 bears. I saw one adolescent grizzly in the Sierras, some bear cubs in southern Oregon, many in the Mt. Rainier Area in Washington, and one giant Black Bear in Mount Adams Wilderness in Washington. The Mt. Adams bear felt quite special because I've heard they are very rare on that mountain; one person, Susan Saul, and flora and fauna field expert for Mount Adams, said she only saw two bears in thirty years of hiking on the mountain! During this summer, we camped at Duffy Lake on a 2 day, 20 mile loop around Saddle Mountain and Marion Mountain. We started from the Pine Ridge TH and went counter clockwise, taking the Turpentine Trail, Duffy Lake Trail to Jorn Lake, Blue Lake Trail (that went over the flanks of Saddle Mountain), and back on the Pine Ridge Trail (with the side-detour to Marion Mountain). I remember Marion Mountain from one of your earlier videos. The Turpentine Trail was hardly a trail. It was more of a bushwack through hundreds of large and small blowdowns (several times had to detour way off trail through snowbrush!), and tons of snowbrush and ferns growing up over the previous burned area. The trail was discernible visible than a 10 year old deer trail, lol.

Thanks for watching. That area is so neat and you can make so many loops you could backpack for days!!

Alligator in Everglades National Park. They don't really bother you if you leave them alone but this one I didn't see and almost stepped on it. Beautiful place you live in.

I had a rattle snake slither right in front of me on a trail in So Cal but I think the black bear we saw in Kern County off the trail about twenty yards or so in the brush was more intimidating for sure. The bear was just resting I guess and we walked on by, that was it.

Hiking in snow is awesome :)))) The view at the beginning of your video and at the lake is amazing! Thnx for sharing to the both of you! Here´s my answer to your question of the day: One day i "ran" into a very big wildboar but none of us got harmed :) Here in germany we do´nt have that much of dangerous animals at all. From here to there and with a good portion of luck you can see a wolf but that´s it mostly. ....keep on keeping Franziska!

QOTD- Rattlesnakes galore on Northern California trails. They’re everywhere! One of the definite perks of the Oregon coast is lack of rattlers.

This makes me realise how easy we have it in most parts of the UK, start going up Mt Snowden then it might get interesting or some of the scottish mountains. As for wildlife I came across an Adder (the only venomous snake here) just openly basking on a national coastal path in Wales.

That snow is beautiful! Scary animal? We were sitting around having a midday snack in Glacier when a grizzly stood up on it's hind legs and peeked over a small hill. It was about 30 meters away. It must have been checking to see what that delicious smell was. Luckily, there were 4 of us. By the time I looked down to pull the bear spray out of it's holster and look back up, it had run about 200m away. That sucker was fast!

I'm definitely behind on this comment, but I still wanted to play :) The scariest animal I came across on trail was a Copperhead snake. It was about 4 feet off the trail when we spotted it. Luckily it was a cool day and it was just chillin.

Its so amazing! How do you decide when its time to ditch the regular hiking and switch to snow shoe hiking?
@HikeOregon7 жыл бұрын
When the snow is not icy and a little bit deeper than it was in this video. I'd say 3 feet is a good starting point for snowshoes. Anything less than that and you run into rocks and stuff.

A bear that came into my camp on an overcast night with nobody else around was the scariest. It ran away, but it took me quite a while to fall asleep. I've also had a bear not back down once on a day hike, just stand there about 50 feet from me on the uphill side of the trail. Lastly would be a bear in the Sierra that I saw sniffing around my tent as I came back with water from the creek. It left but only slowly as I walked towards it yelling, and it stopped about 100 feet away. Fastest I have ever packed up camp.

It would have to be a snake on our way up to Blood Mountain. I hate snakes! Beautiful hike! Do you worry about trip hazards when you're hiking in that much snow? I'd be worried to death if I were your husband and I don't mean to sound like you're not a strong and capable woman because I know you are, but it would still worry me. Thank you for sharing!

The only time I get anxious about hiking in the snow is when I'm snowshoeing and I know the snow is super deep. I have been in a scenario where the snow was covering a large 6 foot bush so I walked over it with my snowshoes and fell right through and was neck deep in snow with my snowshoe tangled in the branches below. The more I moved the further down I went. It was terrifying! But when the snow is only 2 feet deep, I am not worried at all.
