Nice game Stefan. That g5 move really is interesting. I couldn't find a single thing I liked about White's position after it was played. I would have been nervous as White. I own GM King's Chessable Anti-Sicilian course and highly recommend it to anyone. It gives you great options against all the commonly played variants of the Sicilian, if White decides to avoid the traditional open Sicilian. A great compliment to his Kalashnikov course, which I also own. Great stuff!

What I found interesting is that this game is also decised by a lazy move (c4??, instead of Nc2), like the previous amateur game (c3?? instead of Nc3). I was analysing some of my games and discovered that in many cases my errors resulted also from "intellectual lazyness". I start to believe mental tenacity might be equally important as chess understanding.

Pawns moves are so underrated, both in their strength and weakness. There is no taking them back. If you make a bad piece move, you can at least retreat it(usually) and hope that the lost tempo isn't losing in itself. If you make a bad pawn move, you're going to live with the strategic implications for the rest of the game.

@@LateCloser Very true, and it's often the pawn-structure that determines where the pieces can or cannot go. Pawns are the soul of chess.

There are several ways to improve. If you have money a coach can really help. But there are plenty of other ways you can improve yourself. A) Chess books. For your level I can recommonded Silmans how to reassess your chess 4th edition. It will cost you the winter, but you will come out a different person in spring. B) Figure out why are you stuck. Take a look at your last 10 games. What was the most important mistakes in those 10 games (only 1 each)? Is there a pattern? Improve on that. Repeat. One aspect of the game at the time! It's important to not just focus on mistake itself. Let's say you lost to blunders. It is not useful to remember "I should have moved my knight", make it more general. Why did this blunder happen? For example, was your king exposed when you blundered? (An exposed king is more vulernable to tactics. (Which is why black castled in this game! Even if nothing concrete was yet up.)) For me; I discovered I always want to trade queens; even if mine is more active. C) Play moves you think you learn from most; rather than ones you think are objectively best. I think ...g5! in this game is a great example. Maybe Victor though objectively it was best; but I bet he also just liked playing like this. Hope this helps. :)
