Star Wars movies always seem to split audiences, what will Doug and Rob think of their latest outing? Let's take a look at Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Solo: A Star Wars Story, or simply Solo, is a 2018 American space Western film about Han Solo, a character from the Star Wars franchise. The film is directed by Ron Howard and produced by Lucasfilm, from a screenplay by Jonathan and Lawrence Kasdan. It is the second of the Star Wars anthology films, following 2016's Rogue One.

Honestly, that's a B in Star Wars movie history. They don't all have to be generation-defying masterpieces and I'd happily take a decent sci-fi action adventure like Solo over whatever the hell the prequels were trying to achieve.

misterwishart no it’s a little bit more that it’s a dull, and even most times unoriginal, franchise that runs on the fumes of how great masterpieces the original two were. It’s like the Simpsons, at first it was great! But now it’s just a bloated, dead corpse constantly being milked til there’s not a drop left. Star Wars is a dead-fucking-horse is what I’m trying to say.

The review wasn't actually negative - it was just... a star wars movie - that's ALL it was. A Star Wars movie. No new ideas - no new premise - just... A New Hope part three :P Rogue One already did that - and it did it better. Even The Force Awakens took bigger risks than this movie... 'course, those weren't ideas from George Lucas :P

I loved Solo when I thought I wouldn't. I went M terrified that I would hate it, but I loved every minute. The lead was weak ill give u that but he tried really hard and not every poor actor does that and that endeared him to me. Overall I think Ron Howard saved this film and I'm looking forward to the continuation of the story. The surprise cameo at the end was mind blowing and I loved cthulu - ppl will understand when they see it 😁

My big problem with the movie is that you had all of these check marks to hit. Things that Han did before A New Hope. That’s fine, but this film happened in the span of a few days. So ALL of these big moments in Hans life happened in a few days, a week at most. If it were me doing it, I’d have done it like Walk the Line. Starting at the cut scene from a new hope, where he meets Jabba after the Cantina scene. Then have him wonder how he got into this position, cutting to child Han and seeing how he became an orphan. Advancing through his life, covering important moments until getting to the Cantina. If you want to get bold, have it end with the whoosh of Kenobi’s saber and we seen, from Hans POV, Ewen as Kenobi having just cut off the walrus mans arm. The stories that focus on characters should be a biography. Rogue One worked because it picked a story that was untold and told it.

Brent Phillips where? The closest thing I can think of is when that droid screams at Jabba's torture room
@josephperez2004
@josephperez2004 6 жыл бұрын
Brent, mmhm there are notes of it here and there and in other bits of Star Wars media. My understanding regarding droids is that they don't start out sentient. Droids out of the factory are made for a job and simply perform that job. But the thing is that droids with an advanced enough processor (a heuristic processor in the tabletop games), can learn and adapt to problems they experience as they operate. And as time goes by, those droids end up questioning things and developing personalities and quirks. This is where two things often come in: restraining bolts and memory wipes. Restraining bolts are used to stop a droid from physically moving. If your droid is working fine but has a tendency to wander off or starts showing erratic movements, you can just put a restraining bolt on so long as the job in question doesn't need them to go anywhere. Memory wipes are pretty much what it says on the tin. It blanks your droid back to it's factory default mode. But as we have no doubt witnessed, some droids are so much more useful with their personality and quirks than without them, that some people simply decide against giving their droid a memory wipe.

There's no such thing as a "better opinion" Nobody's opinion is better or worse than any other, its all a matter of perspective when it comes to art and creativity. Enjoy the opinions you agree with or enjoy listening to, don't come here spitting your hatred and toxicity just because you disagree with them. Watching a video just to "laugh at their stupidity"?? That sounds like something an edgy middle-schooler would say, dude. Find something better to do with your time than being hateful.

Those who enjoy this film let go of their expectations of what a Star Wars film is. Or you’re a kid around the age star wars is aimed at and has always been aimed at - or you’re a fan of the books and comics and consumed everything Star Wars. A lot of casual fans who only loved the OT and nothing else will not feel the same excitement and love for this film that someone like me did.

@Wparker6804 except that can't be considered accurate, because so much canon has been rewritten or removed. So if you aren't certain what is canon and what's not anymore,especially if you were a fan of legends but may not have cared about a weirdly animated kids show, then the only thing you trust as canon is the movies. Going by the movies, Maul was pretty clearly dead.

My problem with showing a "young" Han Solo is that we've already seen young Han Solo, in A New Hope. What, this guy is supposed to now just be a punk kid? And what kind of adventure are we supposed to see? Before he met Luke and Obi-wan, he and Chewie are still just small time smugglers. Han never had any ambitions to get himself involved in anything else.

I haven't even seen it and, after seeing and being disappointed by 'Rogue One', I'm getting the "straight to DVD" vibe from all the trailers. Prequels just don't have a good track-record. I've seen every Star Wars movie from the rereleases of the original trilogy to 'The Last Jedi' and I'm seriously debating whether to see this in the theater or just wait till it gets to cable TV. $250 million dollars for a movie that's only good enough to be classified as a straight-to-home-video production is rather shameful for a large studio.

Something that gave me the "This Is Star Wars" feeling were the familiar aliens. There were Twi'leks and Rodians running around in the background. These familiar kind of aliens are what MAKE this Star Wars, as opposed to a Star Trek or the Fifth Element or Valerian. They helped in Rogue One, but there aren't any in TFA or TLJ.

I think they completly blew the chance to bring a notable legends character in, namely Tyber Zann, who'd play Han's buddy and later secret employer. Zann was a super intelligent crime lord in Legends who sought after revenge against the Galactic Empire because he got expelled from the imperial academy and punished. A script based on that would have packed huge potential and also promising sequels, in which Han has to survive and eventualy end up causing the destruction of the Zann Concortium and killing his old friend. That at least would have been emotional and impactful also for the character. We could have also had a live action cameo of Thrawn in such a spin off duologie / trilogy because he is also dealing with pirates and crimelords.

Or better yet, all three characters: Han, Zann and Thrawn knew eachother from or met in the academy. Latter two have a personal grudge against eachother because they consider themselves superior to the other. But while Han and Zann are expelled from the Academy, Thrawn quickly rises through Imperial ranks and some years later is in command of an imperial fleet, while Zann has established the Zann Concortium.

I've never even seen that happen. I keep hearing about it but never experienced it. It doesn't even make sense to do it after a movie. You applaud to tell people "I enjoyed the show." Music, play, comedian, whatever, that's why you applaud. But in a movie, the people aren't fucking there to see/hear you applaud. *Maybe* and this is a big maybe, it makes sense at the end of a big premier where the cast and crew is there to actually hear people applaud.

I find it weird that they refer to the claps as kinda mandatory. In my country, nobody never claps in the theater, and if they do, it is a really big deal: like the movie/scene was spectacular or something. And by the way, I think (haven't seen the movie) that the moment they refer to as weird clap at the beginning is when Chewbacca's wife shows up or something like that.

The movie is just "fine". Nothing really blows you away about the movie because everything is merely serviceable at best. Say what you want about The Last Jedi, but at least it had Holdo's lightspeed kamikaze move and the Rey/Kylo Ren lightsaber battle that made you go "That's fucking badass". There's nothing in Solo that really take you by surprise or takes your breath away.

Glenn Welsh Until you realize that Holdo's lightspeed move breaks the lore of Star Wars and Rey's/Kylo Ren's praetorian guard fight was horribly choreographed. THEN you come to the conclusion that there are at least 2 moments and 3 lines in the film that are even good.

Firehawk1927 yeah the lightspeed ramming was just silly, if that was the case Han's lightspeed escape from the pirate ship should have destroyed the Falcon in force awakens. Even in the expanded universe you had the galaxy gun, it's missiles were unstoppable because it came out of hyperspace only once it was about to hit it's target, basically once you enter hyperspace you are in a different dimension and do not interact with normal space, except for gravity wells. Yes I do agree the fight with the guards was quite underwhelming, I do watch a lot of Asian martial arts films so there's a world of difference between watching an actor fight and martial artist fight.

Ironically in the Young Adventures of Indiana Jones made by Steven Spielberg and George Lucas Indy as a teen enlists in the Belgium Army and fights in WWI. The conflict shows how he goes from being troubled taking a life to Raiders of the Lost Ark where he doesn't enjoy killing but it doesn't seem to phase him either. I feel they decided to take that plot point. I myself would have made Han Solo a drop ship pilot and not infantry though. That way you'd get both frontline combat and his piloting skills.

the og canon was setting up a droids civil rights war, the legacy of the force, and the last of the jedi series were seeding it pretty hard. One of MANY unfortunate casualties of the canon slaughtering Disney did. Also, the Han Trilogy is great, and the Kessel run sequence in it was really good. Honestly, if you divorce the film from the Star Wars trilogy and treat it as a separate film (similar to the relationship between Fantastic Beasts and Harry Potter), it works. Alden did a great job capturing Harrison Ford's mannerisms, and Donald Glover was enjoyable as Lando (although you could tell he was trying too hard in some parts.) And yes, a lot of the movie didn't feel like a Star Wars movie - more like a noir or a Western (which I think is what Ron Howard was going for.) Kessel, for example, felt more like "West Virginia in Space" than a neat place for a smuggler to complete a run. At the same time, I would totally enjoy it more on a second viewing than The Last Jedi - which, frankly, has some embarassing moments.
